Manchester City made their first foray into the summer transfer market yesterday as they announced the signing of Gael Clichy from Arsenal on a four-year deal. The left-back is out of contract at the end of next season and having indicated he had no intention of signing an extension, the Gunners have chosen to cash in on the Frenchman now rather than run the risk of losing him on a free in the near future.

The transfer, though undisclosed, was reported to be in the region of £7m and has already sparked reports that Arsène Wenger might make a move for Newcastle’s José Enrique, though in Kieran Gibbs they may have a ready-made replacement already in line at the Emirates.

The left-back slot was a real bone of contention for Roberto Mancini last season; despite buying Jerome Boateng and Aleksandar Kolarov in the summer, the City boss used five players in the position and ended the campaign no nearer to finding a solution. A move for Clichy gives Mancini a proven Premier League campaigner and with no concerns over the player adapting to a new league, the new boy should fit seamlessly into the back-four. The player spoke of his optimism following the announcement of the deal:

â€I’m really happy to be joining such a great club. I hope I can add to the quality we already have here because we have a fantastic squad who I believe will continue to get better. I can’t wait to get started and I think anything is possible with this team.â€

There seems to be no hard feelings as far as Wenger is concerned, with the Arsenal boss paying Clichy a glowing tribute upon his departure:

â€We would like to thank Gael for eight years of terrific service to Arsenal, during which time he gave absolutely everything for the Club. He has grown and developed so much since joining us in 2003, and has been a crucial part of the team over recent seasons. Gael leaves with our respect and best wishes. We wish him the very best for his future career. “

The Statistics

Clichy played one season for French club Cannes, managing 15 appearances and picking up two assists before Arsene Wenger snapped up the then 17 year old in June 2003. He made his debut in October that but year but the first three seasons of Clichy’s career at the Gunners was spent as understudy to Ashley Cole, with 34 league appearances under his belt up to the end of the 2005-06 season.

Cole’s move to Chelsea allowed Clichy to firmly establish himself as Arsenal’s first-choice left back and, when fit, he’s been one of the first names on Wenger’s team sheet over the past five seasons, with a foot problem in 2006/07 and a stress fracture of the lower back in 2009/10 the only real disruptions to his game time.

Clichy played a total of 187 league games for Arsenal and despite being regarded as an attacking full-back, scored just 1 goal and made only 8 assists since making the left-back role his own, with his assists over the past five seasons reading (1,5,0,1,1). He has also represented his country 10 times, picking up 1 assist.

The Prospects

While it may appear Clichy offers City a left-back solution, Mancini’s selection policy since taking over at Eastlands suggests there should be no such assumptions. Joleon Lescott and James Milner were both proven Premier League first-team players with Everton and Aston Villa respectively and is spite of their huge transfer fees, neither appear to have the manager’s confidence, with Lescott’s first-team appearances last season mainly down to Kolo Toure’s suspension for a failed drugs test.

Kolarov, Boateng and Edin Dzeko all arrived last year for a combined total of almost £70m and their failure to nail down a starting role is an indication of the bloated squad available to Mancini thanks to the limitless spending power of City’s Abu Dhabi owners. After spending hundreds of millions over the past couple of seasons, the club claim their future spending will be in line with UEFA’s financial fair play guidelines and to be fair, they have been particularly prudent this summer, as they reportedly look to offload the likes of Wayne Bridge, Craig Bellamy, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Shay Given, Roque Santa Cruz and Nedum Onouha.

If Clichy can cement his place in the starting XI, there’s a definite cause for optimism; City chalked up the most clean sheets last season, with eighteen, and had the joint-best defence, conceding thirty-three goals over the season. Perhaps surprisingly, Mancini gave as many as seven players 30+ league starts last term, highlighting the possible Fantasy returns on offer if he’s convinced by Clichy.

Vincent Kompany started 37 league games last term and, at present, seems by far the safest option for those Fantasy managers eyeing up City’s back-four ahead of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) kick-off; Clichy’s Fantasy worth should become more apparent as the season unwinds but his inclusion from the start may be unnecessarily risky. With Champions League football coming to Eastlands, rotation could further diminish the majority of City players’ Fantasy prospects. Clichy’s move certainly looks like ending the prospects of Fantasy Football Scout cult favourite Kolarov though, with the Serbian’s showings at left-back last season proving too vulnerable for Mancini’s liking.

In terms of pricing, Clichy started last season at 6.0 with Arsenal and with City’s defensive performances in mind, a slight rise to 6.5 seems the likeliest of scenarios when next season’s FPL listings are introduced later this month.

He's the worst player I've ever owned on FPL and now there's a much better player available to City in each of the two positions he could play.

      Never again.

I think Mancini seemed to have had enough of Kolorov towards the end of the season when Zabaleta was playing oop at left back before him.

They're short of a quality winger still imo

It'd be great if he moves after the prices are released, so he'd still cost what he would "playing for Wigan".

I would welcome him into the fold as he should make a real difference but am still bewildered about L'pool's touted mid transfers. I just hope we don't sign Adam as then, in fpl terms, the rotation risk is horrendous.

I can see a time when most fpl players teams consist of non-top 6 players due to rotation.

That said, N'zog -> L'pool looks good in fpl terms.

Despite the source, it seems likely. It really is crunch time for Arse, imho, as they have to replace those that leave with better or potential to do better (whatever that means looking at Arse).

Wilshere looks the real deal and could replace Fabs. Imho, Bendtner, Denilson & Chamakh should go but I'd keep hold of Diaby. Arse need to sign some top quality soon, but who?

I agree Stevvi, although I must admit I liked the look of Chamakh at the start it hasnt quite gelled.

But the worrying bit in the article is the bit about not being able to attract decent players to the club even with £45m to spend.

Trouble with Wilshere is will he go the same way as rest rest of Arsenal's "young guns" if they dont get anything this season? After the past few years of nearly getting there, that doesnt bode well.

I also agree (and being an L'pool fan with an Arse fan of a son I follow and admire Arse... ahem).

I don't get Chamakh... brought in as an RVP replacement and did alright for a while and then nothing,

I agree about talent leaving Arse.., they could really do with keeping Nasri and Fabs as that would attract others but that seems unlikely.

I assume with all the new finacial regulations coming into force they are in a better situation than most?

I too have a lot of admiration for Arsenal and the way they play without being an "Arsenal fan". I also think Wenger has brought a lot to the club, but I think he's now getting too stubborn or stuck in his ways and it's in danger of going stale.

Financially I agree, they are probably one of the best off with the new rules. Now though they need some astute buys to take advantage of it.

Lulz at Tevez - what a twat. Hope they finally get rid of the moaning git, it would give me one less FPL headache anyway.

As for Enrique to Arsenal, well undoubtedly it would be a shrewd bit of business by Le Prof, but how gutted would Gibbs be? Seeing another young, more talented LB come in to guarantee he's stuck benchwarming.

Gibbs is usually injured anyway. I've heard they're interested in Cissokho as well. Liverpool are apparently back in for Enrique. Not seen enough of him to know whether he's any good.

Sorry, 'Tila ... I was mocking City's pick-up of Clichy.

I haven't seen gobs of Enrique, but Clichy is 'meh' at best, IMO.

I'm honestly lost for words that City'd sign him ... maybe it was a two-fer deal in order to get Nasri, with Wenger *wanting* to get rid of Clichy.

Aha I see! Well yeah, seems a funny transfer. Unless they've realised Kolarov is pretty mediocre as a defender and Clichy is classed as Home Grown (is he?)

Talking to a friend today and he was saying how statistically Clichy was one of the best left backs for tackles won this season. It doesn't sound likely to me but there's always the chance it could just be my Arsenal-defence-bias.

Tevez is a helluva player, but also an unmitigated mercenary with an insatiable wanderlust.

All his off-the-field drama and intrigue can really upset a team ... and I think his breaking into the 'worldclass' category will be undone by it all.

My mate told me recently that he can't speak English! Is this true? If so that's pretty disgraceful after 5 years in the country. How did he ever expect to 'get' the culture? Maybe to appease him, Man City's owners will have Spanish teachers sent throughout Manchester to accomodate the chap.

He apparently had the worst education in the world while growing up, so it's pretty lucky that he's as good as he is at football.

Having said that I do find it rather shocking that after five years he still can't really do a post match interview.

Yeah, yeah, yeah ... know the story. I actually think it was a mark of character that he turned down the chance for plastic surgery to repair the scar.

He's a very good player, might even be 'great' if he bedded down somewhere and stayed. But his unsettled attitude will prevent that from happening. City's glad he was there for their trophy ... and he'll surely make someone else happy ... but I'm all right with him being gone from United.

              Shame, really.

Not at all, but everyone makes the choice: Carlos refuses to do so, wanting his cake and eating it too.

Move the kids to you OR play with a team near your kids.

Don't travel home every off-week, complain and moan about the situation, leave the team - only to sign a new contract with a team *just down the road* - and begin all over again.

A Man, an adult, makes the hard decisions. He can't seem to. As I said, a shame, because I think he could be truly world class.

from the match-highlights I've watched of him, he looks like the kind of player who'd want more time on the ball than he'd get in England. A move to Italy is probably a better move for him.

*I'm not suggesting he is a homosexual, that is fine in today's society. Being a Manchester United fan however is not. Many young boys feel strange urges when they look at pictures of Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and John O'Shea. They should suppress those urges or face being disowned and marginalised by their peers and society in general. It is no laughing matter.

Feel sorry for Moyes. They need to sell to buy. Yak and Yobo won't raise much... Think they need to cash in on Rodwell possibly?

If anyone offers around the £20m mark for Rodwell they should sell. He is very highly rated, but I've not seen him do anything to be worthy of the mental hype, mind you I havent seen Henderson do anything to be worthy of £20m either....

            Wow. Just stop.

Global warming, and its human antecedents, are empirically proven. And global warming is about average temperatures, worldwide, not regional fluctuations.

In fact, the disturbances to the previous climatology can cause 'crazy' local weather patterns - due to shifts in ocean currents and air streams - like really cold weather and snow in England.

Where does it say Nzog to Liverpool? Would much prefer he went to Villa. Transfers Im hoping for which could work their way into my starting X1....

    Given > Villa
    Enrique > Liv/Ars
    Nzog > Villa
    Nasri > City
    SWP > Wigan
    Sturridge > Fulham/Newcastle
    Big name > City
    Big name > Chelsea

SWP is not coming near my team. Can't pass, cross or shoot. Add to that he'll be playing for Wigan.

N'Zog to Villa and Enrique to Liverpool would be absolute bargains if they move after FPL opens.

Wigan also linked with Giovani Dos Santos, I think he has so much potential, looked good for Barca and impresses for Mexico, just needs to go somewhere without nightclubs nearby! If SWP can rediscover form he had at first spell with City then would be worth investment!

Fair enough ... but I see him as a one-trick pony > he has absolutely blazing speed, and against defenses unsuited to that, he can do damage. But, IMO, against organized back-4s, he has no Plan B.

Oh seeing as you're an American I thought I'd bore you with this little anecdote of my evening.
I had meatloaf for the first time ever this evening. Cooked it myself too, and it was really tasty. It's ubiquitous on US TV shows but never had it before. I like it.
There's the story and you aren't getting those 30 seconds of life back. They belong to me now.

Oh had mac and cheese loads of times, its the first thing they teach you to cook when they make you do Home Economics at school (note the 'make' I wasn't there by choice).
Meat loaf cherry popped though, had a nice spicy sauce (made from scratch) with it too. Lovely.

Do you think that's the problem (the drink)?

I've not really heard anything about him for a while now, but he was great in his time for Barca (even scored a hat-trick on his last game if I remember rightly) and I can remember being pissed that we missed out on him. Simply by looking at his goals/game at Santander (I know that's stupid) it looks better for him which is good.

Lol probably. Sneijder would be a great signing if he can adapt to creating from deep more often, like Scholes did.

Strange how Chelsea are linked with Modric, while United are linked with Sneijder eh? Swap them around and it's what both clubs need.

I'd welcome Sneijder, so long as he doesn't f*ck up the wage bill, and I'd be slightly reluctant to let Nani go the other way.

Plays for Velez in Argentina. Very similar to Pastore. He's unknown because he has a serious knee or ankle ligament injury which kept him out over a year. He's just had a great season and has now attracted interest across Europe.

I actually rate Downing, more so than most Liverpool fans. I guess I was just hoping for a bigger name, somebody like Mata or Adam Johnson.

£15m really is alot for Downing, but we really do need a LW, more than any other position (even LB)

You do. Personally I think Liverpool need a higher calibre player than Downing to regain a CL place. Oh, and I think they need to keep players like Meireles too and not flog him off to make space for players like Adam.

Know what would be fun? If Liverpool made a giant bid for Kolarov.

But I have to admit it, why would a CL quality player come to us right now, when we are not even in Europe? I mean, if we're in a bidding war with the top 4 for a player, they can offer them CL football this season.

Liverpool are still a legendary club and also for the first time in a handful of years a positive project rather than a sinking ship. It's very attractive for most players.

I'd LOVE it if Aquillani made it at Liverpool. Geez he's been badly mistreated.

Ofcourse (it kind of made it look like I was talking down to Liverpool)

But most players will choose playing in the CL this season over possibly waiting a season or two to build a very strong squad for the title.

                  Yeah, absolutely.

This far the other big teams have not made any signings that will improve them in the short term either, actually most of Liverpool's direct rivals risk being weaker next season than last.

Pah, that's a ridiculous excuse! Any manager/director of football with any common sense would have waited until the summer, realized that Suarez was fine for the rest of the season and seen the light over the price tag.

He was injured at the time too! Disgrace.

But Suarez had never played a game for us? He could of been useless and that would leave us with Dirk as our only good striker for 6months.

Agreed CT - People are thinking too much about his time at Liverpool, where he has been injured, rather than how good he was for Newcastle up to December.

Aye good at Newcastle, a handful for defenses but when I've seen him play for Liverpool the football was not attractive, nor effective (bar the City game of course). Interesting to see how the season goes with him, I have my doubts.

i'll explain. the first goal was a mistake by hart, the shot was as close to the centre of the goal as it was the corner. you can bet hart was livid with himself for that goal as opposed to just holding his hands up and saying too good. were it not carroll's first goal for liverpool then we would have heard more about the goalkeeping for the goal, even from someone as immune as hart. the 2nd was a freak header. kolarov is actually the one who diverts it right into the corner.

seriously i advise you to watch the first goal again from behind the goal and tell me it isn't dodgy keeping. if that was a random player shooting at gomes it would go down as a keeper mistake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLOcPVR4hbw#t=2m27s

Oh there was never any doubt it was a mistake, but it it's not a Gomes/Lampard howler either. Carroll hits it well and the swerve on the ball does enough to wrong-foot Hart.

this is going to sound very anti-carroll but the swerve is almost non existant imo. (wait for it) it's like an optical illusion with hart's parry making it look like a bit of extra swerve at the end. yeah the power was immense but why is hart getting wrong footed by someone on the middle edge of the area? he should be in the middle of his goal. if he was it's a matter of dropping down and smothering the ball regardless of it's power. worst case scenario parrying it wide

Cut the guy a bit of slack, he scored two goals against the league's best defence(?).

                    I don't think Carroll's a great player, but I don't think he's a bad one.

carroll's best moment in the game was actually a pass he played early on. released suarez with a first time through-ball on the volley.

Wouldn't go that far Atilla, if he is under 10(which i seriously doubt) he would be one of the first names in my team.

He is missing pre season training though so i would need to see him play a few games and have a look how he performs but he still is a good player and has always been a good FPL player and may be even better this season, he has alot to prove and i see Liverpool doing well this season. + think of all the penalties Suarez and Carroll will win 😉

It wasn't too bad after the start i had, finished 14,000 which i'm not that upset with after the poor start i had, the good thing was i got better and better pretty much every week so hopefully this season i can start of with a bang! how did it go for you?

That's not bad at all, especially after a bad start. Must have been nice seeing green arrows every week!

Myself? Rubbish!! But completely my own fault. Made stupid amounts of transfers, took too many risks etc trying to win manager of the month prizes in work. Finished outside the top 100k. Need a much more conservative approach this year!

But yeah, like yourself, excited for the big kick-off again. This is my favourite part of the year, when I have not yet embarassed myself with my obvious lack of tactical footballing knowledge!

Shouldn't be long now, within the next week for sure i'd say anyway, so we can shortly start picking our teams and changing them hundreds of time before the start of the season! You certainly didn't embarrass yourself in our H2H 2 years ago, how did H2H 1 go?

Funnily enough, I could well be in a different job come August anyway, so won't be in the same work league :p

Yep, anytime in the next week. First the excitement, then the anger at the prices, and the disillusionment that player x is no longer OOP!

Ah dude, the H2H1 was a shambles. Well out of my depth lol. Seriously, I was Pardewed... GANG Pardewed! While Souness videoed it for weird Asian businessmen to buy. Ah that works out well. I find it best to just try your best each week. Forget about your H2H's or cup opponents, it only ends up losing you points, whatever happens in H2H happens, that's the way i look at it anyway!

Ouch that's not good, done so well to get to H2H1 and then in the reserve league the next year, that could be tough to get back up? i have no doubt i will be seeing you back up again though! I finished 9th so not too bad, i remain in H2H2, will be going for the promotion this year though!

Nothing wrong with a season of consolidation Rock! Your fanbase in China has now grown, new investors are lined up... it's your time to push on into the top division.

As for myself, I do see it being a tough ask to climb up, but will be playing for the overall rank this season for definite... Whatever happens after that, happens.

So hoping for any changes to the rules this season? Any transfers you'd like to happen before the end of August?

Big money to be made from the Chinese!

Not too many, wouldn't mind a vice captain rule coming in instead of the emergency captain and i could do without the 2nd Wildcard, gives too much of an advantage to my rivals who don't think ahead! I'm not sure if either of them will happen but we'll see.

As for transfers i'm happy enough with the ones Man U have done so far.. just another midfielder and i will be happy, would like to have Sneijder in my FPL team, Modric probably suits us better though. would like to see an expensive signing for City, give us some more options for our teams and looking forward to seeing what Chelsea and Arsenal do! You?

Totally agree on the vice captain choice and second wildcard, but alas, also agree that neither will happen.

Transfer wise, just interested to see what happens with Cesc and Nasri and what, if any replacements are bought. How will it affect RVP etc... Ditto with City; who will they get to replace Tevez?

Also hoping the promoted teams do some business of course. Saw Stockdale linked with the Swans. Could be interested!

I've already planned without Fab and Nasri, hard to see them staying, just interesting to see where Nasri goes, if Nasri actually does end up staying though, which could still happen, he would be a great choice. Good point regarding RVP, how do you think it will affect him, and even Arsenal for that matter, losing Fab and Nasri will seriously weakin them, losing 1 they can cope with. As for Tevez's replacement, looks like it could be Aguero, which would probably be the best City could hope for, but i'm not sure if he would be the best FPL option.

Stockdale would be a good option for Swansea i think, would like to see players like Given and Keane go to clubs like Villa, they would be good cheap options. What do you think of the likes of Taarabat and Sinclair? looks like Taarabet could leave unfortunetly.

Why does that mean you won't be touching him this season.
He is a world class striker on his day, and a good pre-season behind him/confidence boost from boas, new faces at chelsea and he could end up top scorer next year

Because he hasn't had 'his day' for about 18 months now (barring a couple of occasions).

I personally think he wants a move back to Spain. And obviously I don't expect him to be as bad as he's been for the rest of his career, but atm I'm not seeing half the player I did in his first couple of seasons under Rafa.

Yep, clearly not worthy of doing anything else than serving those noble Aston Villa fans their daily bottle of Cristal.

Villa went for just about everyone other than Rafa.

Made a quick Twitter search to see what he's up to. Got this. Hahaha.

Some top entires into the #AnimalXI this week. Looks like Gi-Rafa Benitez will have a place in the dugout. Squad posted later this week.

Last tweet cracked me up, if Sandro Rosell is reading he should take notice. Timeless.

Back in May I said Adam would go to Villa, wish I had buggu'd it. It's possible now with Aquilani back.

(I also said Young would go to United, and was slated because everyone said he was off to Liverpool! :))

PFOR - Kenny hasn't really had the time to work out a system to suit him and keep the football good, he's only completed the 90mins twice in a Liverpool shirt (in the PL anyway)

Given the whole summer to sort something out I'm sure we'll find a way to make it work. Andy will probably get in my FPL team over Suarez too, that's if he's 2m less (or more)

We'll see I suppose. I think it's more the price tag I was up in arms about! 🙂
