After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

Trying to work out a high-powered midfield with rotating strikers totaling 12 or less. Two questions:

A.) Is this a viable strategy?

B.) Who would be your two cheap strikers? Right now, I like the look of Bojan and Austin.

      yes, and yep those two

you can get a really good squad with them with loads of options, but it could be a bit of a headache and i decided it was better to pack value in to my xi

      A) It's a variation, but leaves you struggling to get a another premium striker in if one hits form without taking hits

      B) Bojan & Austin probably best, but Murray at Palace has been hitting a few in pre-season too

    RMT - 343 formation

    Krul (Elliot)

Cameron, Trippier, Clyne, Caulker, Bruce. (looking to rotate between these)

Hazard, Ramsey, Eriksen, Siggy, Albrighton (Albrighton is just going to be on the bench)

Costa, Rooney, Pelle (im looking to keep Pelle, really think he will do well, not sure whether to switch him for jovetic or lukaku though)

I have 2 million left, should i improve on my defence (if so who?) and is it worth putting Ramsey AND sanchez in?

You've got the same dilemmas I have, sort of. I've gone Jovetic GW1 but intend to swap to Pelle (or maybe Bony) GW2 and I'm really tempted to get Ramsey AND Sanchez but can't work out who to drop from my lovely midfield.
Defence? I'd probably up Cameron (not nailed on) to Koscielny and Trippier to Dawson, or something like that. Looks pretty good though - but then it's close to mine, so I would say that.

What does anyone think will be the Chelsea defence?

    seems pretty clear it'll be

    Cech
    Luis - Ivan - Cahill - Azpil

does anyone think Terry will play the season? or Courtois?

Wouldnt put Cech in, think Courtois will be first choice not to clear yet, and the defence is likely to rotate a lot! No guaranteed starters yet, but Terry should be playing the opening games

Wasn't aware that anyone thought Terry wouldn't play

I also (as a Chelsea fan) think Ivan will play rb more than Azpi due to his defensive solidity and aerial strength, especially against the big teams (both literally and metaphorically)

I do think Cech will start the season but that Courtois will play more over the season as it's more important to keep him happy than Cech

I have no idea who will drop from the defense, it's literally too close to call. Gun to my head, I'd agree with Kjdavid's guess. JT dropping, Iva going CB, natural fullbacks all around to improve on the attacking part of our game.

Courtois will be first choice, at least within a few weeks.

I think that will only happen to rest Terry, which is when Azpi would play rb. If Terry can play he's nailed (bar a massive downturn in form). We have a natural lb now but Mou will prioritise defence over attacking threat at rb and Ivan is more of a defensive asset. Agree Courtois will soon be first choice but not to start the season imo

indeed, if next season we get a class cb to replace terry, a solid dm with good touch/passing and a bit of pace to partner matic and a striker to rival costa then our squad is complete - we'd have two great players for every position

They all "have to" be in there somewhere, which is a bit of the problem unless we do three at the back which I can't see happening in a while. That's why I'm not picking any Chelsea defenders at the start, gotta see what the settled back four is going to look like.

I think he was one of the standout performers of last year and as much as I love Iva I'd prefer Azp over him on RB. He's way more mobile, closes down faster and, given permission, I think he could offer more going forward.

He was my favourite Chelsea player last season, but Luis is better at lb as he can cross with his left

Azpi would offer more tha Ivan going forward at rb no doubt, and I think that Azpi will play against easier teams for that reason

However against the top teams, and big physical teams like Stoke then I think Ivan will be favoured

The other time I see Azpi playing rb is if Ivan goes to cb to rest Terry, so in conclusion Luis and Cahill are 100% nailed and so is Terry unless he needs a rest, and rb will change dependent on fixture

I'm toying with the idea of two cheap strikers that rotate, though that in itself can be dangerous as strikers are probably the best position to score H&A.

I'm in a similar boat but Sturridge armband v a depleted southampton could be gold.

Plus he'll be a "serious player" differential as there hasn't been a lot of people on here with him (I'm aware his ownership on the site is very high)

Monitor injury though. If he plays against Dortmund Gotta be considered. If not maybe to big a risk.

Just working out all of the percentages and will post results soon, going to post the link in the DZ later to hopefully get a few more opinions but I doubt the trend of results will be altered significantly.

    Speroni
    Evans - NTaylor/Cameron - Coloccini/vAanholt
    Eriksen - Mata - Siggy - Sanchez - Wanyama

I think I'm pretty much set on this for the start.

    ___

    Krul/Mannone

    Terry Evans [Huth, Taylor, Chester]

    Sanchez Hazard Mata Sigurdsson

Rooney Dzeko £6m striker (undecided as of who yet)

    _____

Krul and Mannone offer perfect home/away rotation obviously.

Terry and Evans to play every week. Huth and Taylor offer great rotation and have a superb start to the season in terms of home fixtures. Chester should play if he can stay fit and Hull have nice fixtures.

Sanchez, Hazard and Mata speak for themselves. I think Sigurdsson will prove to be a bargain at £6m. I'd love Eriksen in there instead but alas with 3 big hitters in midfield sacrifices have to be made and I want to go with Sanchez over Ramsey and Hazard over Fabregas.

Rooney and Dzeko will play alongside whoever I decide to go with in the £6m bracket. It's a tough decision on who to go with in that role. I'm currently on Austin due to QPR's fixtures for the first few weeks but whoever starts between Fletcher and Wickham may be the better option.

I think it's a solid team with the bench capable of getting me out of trouble on the odd occasion if needs be. Any thoughts or critique please?

Mostly strong but I'd questions some of your reasons. Terry to play every week? Not for me, would be surprised if he started more than 30 league this matches this year with the extra competition. I think Cahill is more likely to play 35+

Huth is also a risk, with talk of Cameron playing centrally this year. But he'll probably start the first few games and Stoke have a good early set of fixtures.

Midfield is great, although seems to be missing a player?

Austin easily the best option for 6m striker IMO, especially in a 3-5-2 and being on pens.

Not great at them, has scored a few in Eredivisie that he really had no right to score i.e. crap pens that were only scored because of the even worse performance from the keeper. Think he missed a few as well.

Another note people seem to forget, he was suspended for 5 matches last season in the league so he has a bit of a temper.

Difficult to say really. Good record under Koeman, is physically an absolute beast but he can be hit and miss in his finishing and shooting + not a good record outside of the Dutch leagues.

His physicality should suit the PL, it is tough to know how he'll crack on though, should be a guaranteed starter.
