After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

My advice would be getting as many proven players as possible. From my experience in playing this game around 5years – its always the proven names that perform well and the punts and pre-season bandwagon rarely do well initially or at all (Boselli, Taraabt, Anelka) – a few mistakes I made in previous seasons. Only ‘punt’ I will be taking is most probably Diego Costa.

The rest will be safe picks. I know its exciting when good players like Sanchez come in and very tempted to bring them in but if you want a good start I feel safe and boring is the best option 🙂

    RMT - 343 formation

    Krul (Elliot)

Cameron, Trippier, Clyne, Caulker, Bruce. (looking to rotate between these)

Hazard, Ramsey, Eriksen, Siggy, Albrighton (Albrighton is just going to be on the bench)

Costa, Rooney, Pelle (im looking to keep Pelle, really think he will do well, not sure whether to switch him for jovetic or lukaku though)

I have 2 million left, should i improve on my defence (if so who?) and is it worth putting Ramsey AND sanchez in? Any changes i should make? 🙂

agree completely, 14 of my 15 played in the league last year and the only one which didn't is Fab, who has played here before. Happy to jump on a bandwagon if it develops with a new player, particular the two saints lads who I can easily downgrade for. But to start with I want players who have already proven it in this league. It's also easier to justify to yourself picking a player who has suddenly suffered a loss in form then a total punt on a new boy which fails horribly.

Is having a rotating striker and midfielder a viable option?

    I'm currently choosing between :-

    A) Dzeko and Albrighton

    B) Austin and De Jong (or possibly A young)

B looks a lot better on paper and allows me to switch between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 easily.

Would it be too many benched points/money though??

Going for the Sigurdsson/Bojan rotation myself, a bit concerned about it if I'm honest, but I always like to start the season off with a couple of risks. Inevitably end up wildcarding early, so if they don't work out, not much lost

          Nasri and Costa for me.

Too many Chelsea mids going to be sharing the points around. I don't think Costa will flop, he's done ok pre-season, and is near as dammit in the team every week.

Nasri negates the aggro of reshuffling the team when Dzeko/Jovetic inevitably get benched once Sergio is back. Then you've got the Negredo to factor in later on!

Rooney and Costa I reckon is 40 league goals right there! 🙂

After tinkering with a midfield of

    Mata - Sanchez/Ramsey - Hazard/Fab - Sig - Davis/Albrighton

for weeks, I suddenly feel myself drawn towards

    Mata - Haz - Fab - Sig - Albrighton

Chelsea's fixtures are great, and if I leave 0.5 ITB it should be flexible enough to get in Ramsey/Sanchez and/or dump a Chelsea mid if they fail to impress.

    Any thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Should be 4.5, won't be a certain starter at all.

Not more than 5 I reckon as I doubt he'll be a regular starter.

Toying with the idea of having 5 x 4.5 mill defenders.

apart from N Taylor and Chester, what would be the other 3 defenders worth considering?
I'm discounting Cameron by the way.

I keep ending up with Charlie Austin in my team. Just nobody else anywhere near that price stands out.

I saw him play for Poole Town v AFC Totton in the Wessex league! This must have been 2007/8 or round about there. Scored a bin full that season.

          Hope this helps! 🙂

Can I get a RMT please. I am trying to finalize

    De Gea (Myhill)

    Davies, Caulker, Debuchy (Targett, Wisdom)

    Sterling, Sanchez, Young, Fabregas (Rodwell)

Lukaku, De Costa, Bony (.5 in the bank)

    got 10,5 for a 2nd striker yet I don't fancy any of

    Costa
    Lukaku
    Ade
    Giroud
    Bony

I guess I'm left with Dzeko or Jovetic

Of the two I think Bony is much more likely to start with a bang. Main man and on pens. With that said I think Gomis could be pretty strong as well.

For 6.0 I think Siggy, with set-pieces in his locker could make a mockery of the price.

Bony is a great option if you don't have Siggy or leaves Swansea

Ok, so why is it I'm not seeing Yaya in any RMT's?

He was the first name on my team sheet and he'll still be sat there come deadline day. Yes, my defense is not the best as a result but I'm OK with that. I just wondered if people would like to explain why they feel happy omitting him from their team? Every time I tinker him out, he's back in within the hour. I just can't imagine starting the campaign without him..........

Something that tempts me to take the Pelle punt is the fact that he's under the guidance/tactics of the same manager as last year when he excelled, as well as the favourable fixtures. Still feel uneasy about it and Remy may just be the 'safer' option.
