Bojan Krkic scores for the third successive match as Stoke brush aside Real Betis at the Britannia. Elsewhere, Everton winless summer continues with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo, with Aiden McGeady grabbing the Toffees’ only goal:

Bojan Strikes Again for Potters
Stoke’s summer signing from Barcelona continued his excellent pre-season form by scoring for the third time in as many appearances last night. Bojan was fielded on the right of a 4-2-3-1 formation against Real Betis, with Stephen Ireland behind lone forward Mame Biram Diouf and Marko Arnautovic on the left – the new boy also played a part in the hosts’ first in a 2-0 triumph after playing in Phil Bardsley, who provided the assist for fellow full-back Erik Pieters.

Available for 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Bojan’s ownership has noticeably risen over the last few days as Fantasy managers take advantage of his budget price tag. Now sitting in over 10% of FPL teams, the Spaniard is the ninth most popular frontman thus far and the bandwagon is certainly backed by the Potters’ opening fixtures – Mark Hughes’ side play host to (AVL, LEI, NEW, SWA, WHM, BUR) in the first 12 Gameweeks in a run that pits them against just three of last season’s top eight over that period.

Certainly, there’s no questioning Bojan’s form and, as the highlights against Schalke,Blackburn and Betis show, his strikes have been far more than mere tap-ins. The main downside is the poor away form that saw Hughes’ side scored just 18 times on their travels last season; many owners may be persuaded to rotate the Spaniard on the road unless he can inspire a turnaround in fortunes.

After the game, Hughes was understandably enthused by the 24-year-old’s display and reckons he’ll become more influential as the months progress:

“He’s a good player, but we knew that when we were trying to bring him here in the summer. He has grabbed the headlines again and rightly so because he put in another really good performance and capped it off with another superbly taken goal. We can probably exploit his abilities in an even better way, but I am sure that will happen the more we play him and the more the other lads and him become accustomed to what they are each trying to do. It is still early days with him and there is a lot of work to be done yet, but from what we have seen so far we are really encouraged because he has come in and made a good impression on everybody here at the club.”

In terms of team selection, Hughes continues to ease Geoff Cameron and Peter Odemwingie into action after both featured in the summer World Cup. After handing the duo their first taste of action at the weekend, the Potters boss threw the pair on after the break and while Cameron (at 4.5 in FPL) may yet nail down the right-back berth in the long run, Bardsley seems to be in the driving seat after featuring throughout pre-season. Hughes’ decision to pair Ryan Shawcross with Marc Wilson at centre-half was somewhat surprising – Robert Huth was afforded just six minutes off the bench, coming on as a late sub for the injured Marc Muniesa.

McGeady Nets in Toffees Loss
It’s four summer friendlies without a win for the Toffees after last night’s 3-1 home loss to Celta Vigo. At the back, Roberto Martinez was without Seamus Coleman due to a hamstring problem once again, while the Toffees boss chose to rest Phil Jagielka, affording John Stones the chance to partner Sylvain Distin in central defence. Furthermore, with both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard fielded for 45 minutes apiece, it’s fair to say the Merseysiders’ backline was far from full strength last night. Further up the field, Martinez continued with Steven Naismith as the lone striker, though Romelu Lukaku is expected to join the action next weekend in the final summer friendly against SC Paderborn, while Ross Barkley hit the woodwork in his first full 90 minutes of the summer.

A disappointing result, then, though Martinez’ under-strength backline goes some way to explaining the capitulation – nonetheless, Everton’s form is a little disconcerting ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Palace, Liverpool and United in the opening seven fixtures.

After the game, the Toffees boss explained why he chose to rest Jagielka and Steven Pienaar for the loss:

“Phil and Stevie were involved on Sunday at Goodison and it was always the plan to work through the week and make sure they are ready for the game in Germany [against SC Paderborn] on Saturday.”

    Opinions on Bojan/Long for my third striker spot?

    Both have decent fixtures -
    Hull's:- QPR, Stoke, Villa, West Ham, Newcastle
    Stoke:- Villa, Hull, City, Leicester, QPR

    Long is obviously an out and out striker and probably more nailed on than Bojan. Although he cost's 0.5 more.....

        Wouldn't do that because it'll limit you in the future on the off chance you might want more than one Stoke outfielder.

        You may roll your eyes at the idea of this but, I doubled up on Southampton keepers last year & it certainly cost me.

                Coverage is nonsense. Not picking a player because you already have another attacking player from that team makes no sense to me if you think they're the best option at that price. Advice like "Choose Fabregas, but if you have Costa go for Sterling instead"

                  The thing about coverage is that many teams score goals, and usually fewer than 4.

                  If you don't have players from goalscoring teams, your chances of getting points for the goals that will inevitably be scored are exactly zero.

                      I'll explain by means of an example.

                      If 21 goals are scored in any particular game week, the distribution among teams might look something like this:

                      0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 3 3

                      If you have low coverage, you might have players from only 5 teams in your squad. In this case, you have exposure to at most 12 of these goals.

                      If you have high coverage, you might have players from 13 different teams, giving you exposure to up to all 21 goals.

                        I think it goes without saying, if you could somehow have one player from every team that in turn, you'd have *exposure* to every goal scored.

                        Although, this is a fundamentally flawed way to think about success if the FPL game.

                        We don't need to be overly concerned with exposure to *each* goal scored in a week. Rather, we want to focus on having the players with the best chance to score those goals.

                        As a result, we should tend to focus on having players from teams with the highest # of attempts on goal.

                        Further to this, we should narrow or aim to having those players who take the lion's share of those shots.

                        For example, last year Chelsea, City & Liverpool had the most goal attempts & as a result, produced 10 of the 16 highest scoring mids & strikers in the game.

                        So armed with this information, we see that the only *low coverage* we should worry about is not having enough of these players rather than too many of them.

                          Having a Chelsea, City, and Liverpool player gives you exposure to the goals scored by that team. The more goal-prone a player in that team you get, the greater your exposure.

                          You have more exposure to goals if you have exposure to more goal-prone teams though.

                          If you lack coverage of a goal-prone team, you have zero exposure to that team's goals.

                            Exactly but, essentially you've just rephrased what I said?

                            Earlier you claimed that low coverage as a negative because:

                            "If you have low coverage, you might have players from only 5 teams in your squad. In this case, you have exposure to at most 12 of these goals"

                            So, I stand by my assertion that we should focus on those "5 teams" rather than having "players from 13 different teams" in spite of the fact that would give "us exposure to all 21 goals"...

                              No. My first paragraph agreed with your previous sentiment.

                              However, I went on say that while having more exposure to high-scoring teams gives you greater exposure to those teams goals.

                              Whereas having high exposure to very teams means that you must have zero exposure to others (and you will have zero exposure to their goals).

                              So if any team is high scoring or has fixtures in which you expect them to be high scoring, you need coverage of those teams.

                              We shouldn't restrict the teams that we cover, because having only 1 player from even high scoring teams gives you at least a chance of scoring off that team's goals.

                      Picking the wrong players gives you zero, but not picking players from teams that will invariably score goals makes you miss out on the chance of a player you have chosen scoring those goals.

              If nothing else, that tells me that Hughes like to pick a consistent back-line as much as he can.

              Did Munesia really start to replace Pieters at the end of last season? Pieters only missed the game where he was subbed off early, and wasn't even on the bench next game, so I presume injured. Also, he missed the final game of the season, but perhaps giving Muniesia a game at LB when there was nothing to play for?

              I'm on Pieters at the moment, but may change to Bardsley, on the basis that Hughes signed him, Cameron is late back from World Cup and probably won't be ready for the start of the season, and is also rumoured to be unhappy and looking to leave.

              How do you think Southampton will do this season?

              My personal opinion is they over achieved last season because Pochettino is such a good manager. Not only that they have lost most of their star players and are likely to lose more so are going to go through a rebuilding phase.

              On that basis I don't see them doing as well this season but I would expect them to avoid relegation but probably not by much.

                  I am not even convinced they will avoid relegation.
                  Think they may rely on other teams being poor rather than them being better if you know what I mean.
                  Can see WBA going down along with burnley

                  I think they'll be fine. Pelle and Tadic will do ok, Bertrand too. It's only Lovren they still need to replace, but 1 player's not going to turn them to rubbish. It all depends on Koeman - and I think he'll do fine.
