The Burning Question – Will Robin van Persie Be “Essential” Once Again?

It’s time for the third instalment in our Burning Questions series, focussing on some of the main dilemmas facing Fantasy managers for the season ahead. Having quizzed our contributors on Alexis Sanchez’ prospects and Defensive Heavy Hitters, we now turn our attentions on a certain Dutch forward, as United prepare for their first season under new boss Louis van Gaal.

When Van Gaal’s appointment was first announced, our expectations for Robin van Persie soared. The veteran manager’s preferred 4-3-3 formation looked set to force Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata onto the flanks and hand his compatriot the lone forward role but, since taking the helm, Van Gaal has continued with the 3-4-1-2 formation that earned Holland third place at the recent World Cup.

Rooney and Mata have resultantly flourished in central roles for the Red Devils over the summer friendlies so far and, whilst Van Persie has yet to return to action after his summer exploits in Brazil 2014, the former pair approach the upcoming campaign in excellent form.

At 12.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Van Persie is the priciest option available to Fantasy managers despite scoring just 12 times in an injury-hit campaign under David Moyes last time around. Granted, with Van Gaal at the helm, we can surely expect an improvement but can he rediscover the form that served up 56 goals, 28 assists and 94 bonus points over 2011/12 and 2012/13?

With just a week to go until their season opener at home to Swansea, we ask the question – Can Robin Van Persie emerge as “essential” once again?

Evs says…
This may shock you all (being the proud owner of an RVP duvet) but I am going to say NO. He just doesn’t look as sharp as in previous seasons. Even in the World Cup, with the exception of the Spain game, he looked ordinary at best. Whereas beforehand he was in your team and there to stay, I think he will be better bought and sold as fixtures dictate. So bearing in mind he is unlikely to start the few first games of the season, then, he’s not essential for now. The only thing that may help swing it in Van Persie’s favour is a lack of European duties for United this season – while many rival strikers have busier schedules, he only has Premier League games to contend with. The duvet is in storage for now… But it may used again!

Applebonkers says…
Back in May 2010 a man called Darren in a Sunderland shirt took me to one side and said, “Son, look at me, I’ve scored 24 goals this season and played in all 38 matches. Yet I still haven’t reached the 200 point mark.” It was at this point that I learnt that it is not actually the more alluring goal which makes the true heavyweight striker, but the assist.

So I think this question could be as simple as will Van Persie start to pump out the assists again? We know he’ll score goals as not even David Moyes could unpolish that diamond, it’s all about the three point cousin. Fellow left-footer Juan Mata is a serious contender for right-sided set-pieces and that could dent van Persie’s potential to earn assists from the deadball.

The Dutchman’s number of passes and all-round involvement plummeted last season, this not only hurts his assist threat but hit him hard on bonus too. Rooney’s 46 passes per game compared to van Persie’s 18 (30 being the magic mark) meant the Dutchman struggled to compete with Rooney’s goals. Overall I’m sceptical whether van Gaal will help inject enough mojo back in to replicate the essential version of 2011 and 2012.

Tom Fenley says…
This is really down to Louis van Gaal, and unless we find out exactly how he’s going to set up the team it’s difficult to know. If it’s two up front then he’s likely to score about the same, or perhaps a little more than Rooney but not enough to warrant spending that extra two million. It’s always possible that van Persie will become essential, particularly if he starts playing up front on his own. It’s sensible to keep a way open of fitting him in with two transfers. However, overall, for that price and the money you save, unless Rooney really isn’t performing (and he does tend to have either very good or bad runs) it makes no sense to have van Persie, right now. Two million elsewhere in the squad provides much stronger value.

Jonty says…
I’m starting to think that we may have seen the best of Robin Van Persie during his sensational 531 point run over the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. I can’t see him replicating that form again. Of course there are significant positives. He plays for Manchester United, he is on penalties and, when fit, should be nailed-on to start. He’s also still capable of scoring sensational goals as his header in Holland’s opening World Cup game showed. But with fitness concerns remaining I’m not sure this 31-year-old will be essential again. Crucially he is 2.0 more than Wayne Rooney, who with assists and goals in his locker, as well as a good pre-season under his belt, looks to offer similar or better returns for far less money. Van Persie also misses the opening fixture – if Rooney shines that day, then the Dutchman will struggle to gain our attention as he once did.

D1sable says…
I’m not so sure. We all know Van Persie’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) history and what he can potentially offer but sometimes past performances cloud our judgment; more recent times suggests he’s lost a little something and has started to succumb to injuries again, though I suppose the trick here is to work out if that was down to David Moyes and ascertain whether Van Gaal can reignite his compatriot’s thirst for goals. The comparison with Wayne Rooney also works against him for me –for an additional 2.0, you’re basically paying for penalties (when he’s on the pitch at the same time) and with Van Gaal already looking at playing a front two, I don’t think there is enough value there.

7shadesofsmoke says…
Was Robin van Persie (RvP) ever essential? The age-old argument goes that RvP is the Fantasy manager’s comfort blanket, the easy choice for captaincy if you want guaranteed returns, but in his most productive season (2011/12) his 269 points came at a rate of 12.38 minutes per point (MPP). He was slightly quicker again in 2012/13 but had fewer minutes, registering 262 points at a rate of 11.91 MPP – slower than Theo Walcott in the same season, let’s not forget.

Considering his eternally mighty price tag, I did present a case for a non RvP captaincy strategy before the start of last season and I’d adopt the same stance again this year. Will Van Persie be a major factor again? I really do think so. Luis van Gaal will need his main man back at his best if he is to make United a force to be reckoned with once more, but is RvP worth the extra 2.0 over his inevitable strike partner, Wayne Rooney? That’s far less clear.

If Robin van Comfort Blanket registered a point every 12.49 minutes over the past three years – in two of which he won the Premier League Golden Boot -Wayne Rooney offers up a similarly consistent point every 12.94 minutes for considerably less over the same period. It would take a season of Luis Suarez proportions for the Dutchman to be tagged ‘essential’ in my plans.

Swanny14 says…
As a Man United fan, please excuse any excessive bias here. But yes, I don’t believe that RVP’s ‘essential’ days are behind him. In an underperforming side and with a whopping 14.0 price tag hanging heavily around his neck last season, many of us naturally fell out of love with the Dutchman as our ‘affections’ turned towards Luis Suarez. But Old Trafford is a very different place now. With Louis van Gaal at the helm, a certain spark seems to have returned to the United side (just watch some of the football they’ve been playing in pre-season, the link-up play is miles ahead of anything we saw from them last year) and Van Persie is certain to benefit from his close relationship with his former international coach.

Sure the Dutchman wasn’t in the finest of form in 2013/14, but Van Persie still bagged 16 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions, and that’s with a midfield behind him that had about as much creativity as a sofa. If Van Gaal can get new signing Ander Herrera pulling the strings in the middle of the park, and figure out the ‘RVP, Rooney, Mata’ dilemma as David Moyes failed to do, then Van Persie – bar injuries – will have the platform to return to his title-winning heroics of 2012/13 and acquire his ‘essential’ status once again in the coming season.

Gavigon says…
I have a feeling that one of Robin Van Persie or Wayne Rooney will become essential. Which of them it is will come down to niggling injuries, and who Van Gaal decides is the attacking focal point – I’m favouring Rooney currently, but I don’t think it will be a clear picture until November or so.

Roscola says…
Those two explosive seasons were no fluke; we can’t doubt Van Persie’s credentials. Louis van Gaal knows and rates him, yet he failed to really ignite Van Persie at the World Cup and there are worrying signs that injuries are coming back to haunt the striker. From a Fantasy point of view, the 3-5-2 system negates any positional advantage he once had over Wayne Rooney and the extra money makes it look like the latter will always be a valid alternative to the Dutchman.

Mark Says…
My love affair with van Persie may well be at an end, but the soft spot I hold for him will doubtless have me considering acquisition at some point. Rooney’s form and the fact that Van Gaal is adamant on playing two central strikers does cast doubt over the potential on offer, however. For me, and doubtless many others, I need to see clear evidence that Van Persie is the stronger and more productive option over a consistent spell before I’d be willing to change the current thinking on the United strikers. Right now, Rooney has the edge and we’re hoping he can deliver value by keeping pace with this team-mate. Underestimating Van Persie is dangerous, however. He definitely has the ability to soar away from Rooney and the rest of the pack in the Golden Boot race, particularly if he can remain fit and the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero suffer setbacks, fatigue and rotation. Events will need to align but that could happen. Evs and I could be snuggling under those RVP duvets by Christmas.

Thoughts on the Utd defense, from a Utd fan:

The Liverpool game was the first time we got to see this new look Utd team really being pressed relentlessly, as they often will be in the Premier League... and they did not look remotely comfortable. Liverpool may have only scored one goal, courtesy of a silly Phil Jones lunge giving away a penalty after Ashley Young lost his man (Sterling), but they should've had another penalty courtesy of Herrera (it's also worth pointing out they gave away penalties against both Roma and Madrid as well), a suicidal pass from Jones to Sterling gifted them another golden chance, and Coutinho was left wide open on the edge of the box for another chance after Jones leapt into a challenge he had no hope of winning. This back three looked uncomfortable all game, and if Liverpool could match their dominant midfield with some sharper play in the final third, that game would've been dead and buried long before Utd got their counter attacks going and pulled off the comeback. Phil Jones, in particular, was an absolute disaster in that game, a veritable David Luiz clone - I wouldn't be surprised if he was the first of this trio to be replaced if a new signing comes in.

It's fair to assume that Utd will be better this season than last season, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll be better defensively, and particularly not at the start of the season. It's always difficult to adapt to a new system under a more attacking manager, particularly when your three most experienced defenders have gone all at once, and on occasions when Utd have lost the ball while the wing-backs were pushed up, Utd's lack of a proper defensive midfielder alongside/behind Herrera has made them look particularly vulnerable. Fletcher is probably the best man for this job as things stand, but it's hard to say whether he'll still be number one choice by the time the window closes, and if for example Vidal comes in as Herrera's partner, I can see them continuing to get caught out. Both those guys love to roam forward, and while they're both high energy enough that they can track back quite well, if Utd are to be formidable defensively the pair will need to develop an understanding that when one goes the other stays, and that can take time. Obviously, if somebody else signs this may not apply.

There's also the issue of a lack of aerial presence. This hasn't been exploited that often in pre-season, but a lot of Prem teams are more reliant on set pieces, and it seems fair to assume that without the likes of Vidic in there this is a defense that doesn't look big and strong enough to routinely deal with aerial balls. Again, this could be improved upon before the window closes, but set piece organisation is often disrupted by new arrivals anyway, so either way I'm anticipating some issues early on.

It's also hard to tell who's going to be in those wing back roles right now. Valencia went off with a knock early in the Liverpool game, Rafael is still struggling with injury, Shaw supposedly lacks match fitness, and while Ashley Young looks good for fantasy points early on, his impact on Utd's defensive prowess is dubious at best (although, to be fair, he does try to track back from what I've seen... he's just not very good at it). There may not be much protection either from the wing backs or midfielders, in which case as things stand you've got three somewhat dubious centre backs being stretched all over the place having to cover a large area.

Utd's fixtures are, as we know, absolutely gorgeous. The opening game against Swansea could be awkward defensively (and there's a possible conflict of interest for those who have Siggy), as they scored the 9th most goals last season away from home, and the 8th most goals overall in the second half of the season, plus Siggy could potentially be a menace in the hole where Utd don't have a particularly great destroyer and the back 3 is still learning how to push out into midfield properly at key moments. After that though, GW2 away at Sunderland (which could in theory be more difficult than last season?) followed by games vs. the three promoted teams, may inspire some confidence, especially as out of those three teams only Leicester really impressed in attack in the championship, and QPR didn't score much at all away from home last season. That said, I'm always a bit dubious about cleanies against promoted teams early on - they tend to be on a high, delighted just to be there, and it's often only once you approach christmas that the trenches get dug and the inevitable, gritty relegation battle begins. While I can't see any of those teams beating Utd, I can see any one of them being in high enough spirits that they'd nick a goal. Last season, of the three promoted sides, Cardiff and Hull both scored 6 goals in their first 6 games (joint 10th in the league), while Palace scored 4. 4 puts them joint 15th but also joint last alongside the likes of Sunderland and West Ham (who Utd play GW6), but this only highlights the point I'll expand upon below about how even the crappest teams tend to get a few goals early on against teams who are yet to settle into a rhythm (Utd being exactly one of those teams). After that, Utd play Everton (h), Chelsea (h), City (a) and Arsenal (a) in four of the next six games, which is a bit unpleasant if you're looking that far ahead.

If you do decide to get Utd coverage at the back, there are only two realistic options for me. The Guardian has reported that Evans is the CB who's impressed LVG the most, stating "of his defenders, Jonny Evans has impressed Van Gaal the most so far, with the manager admiring his ability to play out from the back. As the Dutchman wants to play a three centre-back system the two-footed Evans is an asset since Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are right-sided." So I imagine it would take three new signings before he'd get replaced. LVG has also talked up Smalling in at least one interview (although that might be to boost his confidence rather than an accurate reflection of his worth?), and can't have been impressed with Jones' performance vs. Liverpool, nor his rashness in general. I'd be very worried if I had Jones in my team - there's no way the window closes without Utd buying at least one new CB, and he may be the one who struggles to keep his place.

The other valid option is DDG, but given the above issues is it realistic to expect him to get 0.5 worth of clean sheets over, say, Begovic (who has ridiculously good fixtures, BUT it's worth noting that stoke's defensive record was uncharacteristically mediocre last season. perhaps huth and bardsley can shore things up?) or Speroni (who managed to be the fourth highest scoring keeper last season despite his team being utter drivel for the first half of it)? I'm yet to be convinced on this one.

I'll finish on a point about spending money on defensive players from the top teams early on. My experience has always been that clean sheets become more predictable later in the season when teams establish a rhythm, but early on it's a little like pot luck - aside from the likes of Jose and Pulis' fairly settled, defensive-minded teams, I'm not sure any defender is gonna be worth spending much on unless they have serious attacking threat (which none of Utd's defenders do as things stand - no Vidic anymore, alas). Last season, for example, after the first 10 games the five teams with the most clean sheets were Spurs, Southampton, West Ham, Everton and Hull. This despite the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal having pretty good fixtures during that period. Personally, while I'm going to have a Chelsea defender in my team, I'm not having anyone else over 5, preferring to use that money up front where it is more predictable: the top 5 goalscoring teams over that period were... City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd and Chelsea last season. If I'm reading this right, and it only confirms what my experience has also told me, there's a huge gulf in predictability between early attacking points and early defensive points *unless* the defenders in question are likely to bag a few goals/assists, which I don't think we can necessarily rely on in Utd's case, can we?

I'm a United fan who has Shaw. I just trust LVG to play Shaw & Young as our wing backs for the first game - and believe Shaw will take the chance to cement his place. I also think Shaw will have a great season attacking wise - call me optimistic!

Liverpool pressed really well to put us under pressure, but I think Liverpool & Southampton were the 2 best teams at pressing last season. Apart from them and maybe Spurs (now that they have the new manager), I don't believe the teams in our opening fixtures will make us uncomfortable by pressing us so hard.

I'm hoping that Valencia gets benched a lot as he really shows no attacking verve. If Valencia edges the RWB spot, then Shaw is under serious pressure from Young on the left. If Blind gets signed then yes Shaw could be a real rotation threat.

Why not DDG? If the defence is a little dodgy as you say then DDG might be seeing a bit of action, could have a few save points along with some clean sheets against easy opponents.

I actually intended to do a bit of analysis on saves vs. chances conceded, comparing DDG to a couple of the cheaper keepers with IMO similar clean sheet prospects, but it totally slipped my mind. Also if that post got any longer I think I'd really start to worry about some of my choices in life. 😛

But yeah, DDG would definitely be my number one choice if I had to have one. If there wasn't a 5.0 with such good fixtures and saving ability in Bego, I'd possibly be considering DDG (although I might just go for a rotating 4.5 pair in that case).

The other thing with DDG is he won't be an injury concern unlike Jones and Evans. It tipped the balance for me really. I like Begovic as an option, he's the other keeper I have considered too. I just think for 0.5 more I'd rather back United, Stoke are no where near as solid as they used to be under Pulis, last half of last season wasn't particularly good for them defensively. Bego will get plenty of save points though.

Yeah. I'm kinda relying on the return of Huth, plus the additions of Bardsley and Sidwell and a generally more optimistic mood around Stoke this season (it's where I live, and the excitement is palpable compared to last summer), but I appreciate it's riskier than it would've been, say, three years ago. Those fixtures are soooo good for so long though, and that extra 0.5 is crucial the way my team is currently set up.

Fantastic post. I think signing another top CB that matches LVG's requirements is essential for United. Without that, I agree that their defence won't be quite as good as we hoped. I'm sticking with Evans or DDG for now and hoping that happens. To be honest, there aren't really any other defences that inspire me anyway except Chelsea and Palace.

This is all just opinion. Just because Jones had one bad game in pre-season and isn't the most comfortable on the ball right now doesn't by any means mean he'll be behind Smalling or even Evans in the pecking order.

Jonny Evans is not 2 footed either, so I don't know where you're getting that from.
        He's right footed: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2136195/Jonny-Evans-feels-happier-playing-right-Manchester-Uniteds-defence.html

I didn't mean to imply it wasn't just opinion, although in the case of Evans being two-footed I did state my source tbf, it's not my fault if The Guardian talks bollocks. 😛 Thanks for that article though, nice find. I would argue, though, that just because he's predominantly right-sided doesn't necessarily mean he isn't still the strongest left-sided defender Utd have at this time. Maybe they meant "comparatively two-footed" - that might explain why Fergie liked to field him on the left side, too? There's also an article on The Guardian about Evans coming into contention for the captaincy (maybe they just loooooove Evans?), and these rumours--coupled with the fact that Evans is the most experienced of the three and also seemingly in the best pre-season form--lead me to stand by the assertion that Evans is *probably* the number 1 choice. I'm interested to see how he handles that if so... People forget how good he was during the season of the VDS cleanie record, a run in the team and the backing of a top manager could be all he needs to start looking a class act again. Uh oh... now I'm almost sounding optimistic!

Jones has always been a bit of a headless chicken in my opinion... he's a little bit like Rafael in that he's obviously got bags of potential and has some real standout moments, but needs an awful lot of refinement. He's not currently a player I'd want to rely on too heavily, but obviously LVG may not share that opinion. 🙂

Messed around with the idea and different combinations I could get with them both in and didn't like any. Midfield kept coming out fine but I always had to compensate by getting a cheap 3rd striker and I don't like the idea of doing that. Could work out though.

Nope, looks pretty solid to me. Hoillett is a nice punt and for 5.0 you can't go far wrong.
Maybe the 10 spent on the keepers could be used to upgrade your defence. Perhaps just go for Begovic - Swansea haven't exactly been tight at the back since Monk took over - and upgrade Moore to Ben Davies

Adebayor no. Soldado will more than likely start the season up top. I also think this is the year that Kane gets a decent amount of game time.
