With just six days remaining until the 2014/15 season gets up and running, City and Arsenal go head-to-head for the Community Shield this afternoon. As expected, both side’s starting line-ups have been heavily influenced by a lack of pre-season action for a number of World Cup stars, though Arsene Wenger hands all three of his main summer signings competitive debuts:

Man City Starting XI: Caballero; Clichy, Boyata, Nastasic, Kolarov; Navas, Fernando, Toure, Nasri; Jovetic, Dzeko

Arsenal Starting XI: Szczesny; Debuchy, Koscielny, Chambers, Gibbs; Arteta, Wilshere; Alexis, Ramsey, Cazorla; Sanogo

For City, Stevan Jovetic has the chance to continue the form which has harvested five goals over the summer so far. The Montenegro international is partnered by Edin Dzeko up top and, whilst the likes of Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure also make the XI, Arsenal will be optimistic of taking advantage of an experimental City backline, which sees Gael Clichy fielded as a right-back once again and Aleks Kolarov patrolling the left.

Arsene Wenger names Mathieu Debuchy and Callum Chambers in defence alongside Laurent Koscielny and Kieran Gibbs. Aaron Ramsey owners will be buoyed by what appears to be a move to the attacking midfield three alongside Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez, with Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere sitting in front of the defence. Up front, Sanchez’ role out wide means Yaya Sanogo gets the nod after his four-goal demolition of Benfica in last week’s Emirates Cup, with Olivier Giroud warming the bench again.

I'd go with Dzeko. May lose his place when Aguerro comes back if Jovetic is still in form but seems nailed on for next week. Giroud only came on 2nd half today so seemingy not nailed on.

    Re Jovetic and Dzeko.

Think Dzeko will be the one to be subbed out for the first 2 gws. He'll take time to gain fitness and play the full 90 mins.

Jovetic on the other hand looks set to play the whole game.

Does that make a case for Jovetic?

Is a true no.9...compliments Aguero's playing style better...more likely to keep his place because of that...can play as the lone striker in a 451 before Aguero comes back if Pelle wants that....

last few seasons i've gone all out on GW1 intending to WC straight away, and well, it hasn't really worked.
but, the strategy is that you get the best value that way. immediately get on all the bandwagons, and correct the mistakes you've made at the start. and basically you'll be getting more players for your WC.
not planning on it this year though

Has Albrighton ruined my best laid plans?

Unless your best laid plans were anything but benching your 4.5 midfielder every week then I don't think there should be much in it.

    So points on Chelsea.

    >> Willian has been good in flashes - but looks awfully short of match fitness. Andre Schurrle on the other hand is working incredibly hard. Brilliant vertical runs and gets into loads of goal-scoring opportunity. He should start against Burnley and looks a good punt for early wildcarders.

    >> Fabregas works much better in a 3 man midfield from a FANTASY perspective we saw today than when he is in the pivot (hasn't looked as good in the number 10 role). The one time we have seen Oscar and Fabregas together - it's been Oscar as the No#10 and Fab with Matic. However, Oscar's intelligence means that Fab bombs forward alot and he comes back, and the formation thus keeps interchanging between a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3. Fabregas on that game however was quiet.

    >> Hazard on the other hand has been drifting out of games too. His performance is a little better than last preseason, where he barely cared about the game. He is taking on and beating defenders with ease but isn't showing the kind of commitment and desire by other players. He has had this criticism before though of not taking friendlies and training seriously - though Jose said he had ironed that out. Last time, that resulted in a very dry opening spell for him before hitting top form in mid-season.

    >> Diego Costa's off the ball movement adds alot more for midfielders - but his goals hae usually come back from through balls and run in behind. Hasn't yet shown himself capable of breaking down deep defences (apart from that wonder goal).

    >> Be prepared for disappointment if you own a Chelsea fullback. Right now, Ivanovic looks the best bet. However, Cahill is the one if you want a security of starts.

    >> Chelsea did switch to a 3-5-2 last season on occasions. If you are wondering, if there is only one recognized striker on the pitch then Hazard or Schurrle go uptop along with him. Along with that, one of the wingers (Hazard, Willian, Schurrle, Salah) or Ramires cover the wingback slots. Hazard leaves loads of space in behind as a wingback.

    >> Oscar doesn't look like he is in the form we saw at the start of last season right now - he is dictating play more. In the very remote chance of you thinking about him, forget it. Get someone like Coutinho at that price or save and get one of those shiny 9.0 midfielders.

    >> Also of note, the defence has been shaky this pre-season. While we haven't seen a complete Chelsea XI play a full game till now - the defence hasn't been as good as it was last pre-season. I think it will be sorted out by the time we kick off at Turf Moor.

If he is in top form and getting game after game, why not? Jose has his favourites and there were times last year (most clear on Azpi-Cole) where he refused to rotate.

Though last season he was promptly benched after those 2 goals against Stoke and that goal against Man City.

Should be a regular initally. Later on might get conserved with CL, due to his age. Zouma has been making basic mistakes in preseason and I am not sure Chelsea can trust him - Kalas looked way more assured. Cahill-Ivanovic doesn't work as a duo for me. Both are penalty box defenders who keep backpeddling and intent to block. Terry brings the best out of Cahill and he should play most games.

Today was I think the first time in 8 preseason games he got zero action - probably was being preserved by Jose.

Thanks for the reply. Lots of info to consider. I think I'll stick with Terry as it will be easier to go down to a 6.0, and he has been scoring goals.

Mourinho: 'My opinion is that Fabregas is the right player to occupy the central position in midfield.' #CFC

What does he mean by "the central position in midfield"?

    No.10 or "pivot"?

I think by central he means in the middle, but vertically rather than horizontally. So higher up than Matic the holding midfielder, but deeper than Oscar or whoever plays as the number ten.
