QPR boss Harry Redknapp continue to strengthen his first-team squad for the season ahead with the loan acquisition of Mauricio Isla from Italian champions Juventus. The Chilean is the fourth player to arrive at Loftus Road this summer and follows Rio Ferdinand, Steven Caulker and Jordan Mutch to the club as Redknapp looks to prevent another drop down into the Championship:

After confirming the season-long deal via the R’s official website, Redknapp proceeded to talk up the 26-year-old’s prospects for the season ahead and reckons Isla will be a key figure for the London club:

“He’s a top player and we’re delighted to have him here. He showed his quality in the World Cup for Chile and it’s a great loan signing for us. He’s a versatile player, he’s full of energy. I’m confident he’ll be a really big asset for us this season.â€

Isla – who is believed to have turned down a number of offers to join up with QPR – was equally enthusiastic over the upcoming campaign:

“I am very happy to be here – this is the start of an exciting new adventure for me. Everybody knows that the Premier League is the greatest league in the world and the QPR proposal is very interesting and one I am very excited about. I hope this coming season is going to be great for both the club and myself. I will give 100 per-cent in every game to help QPR in the Premier League.â€

The History

Isla spent eight years in the Universidad Catolica youth system in his native Chile from 1999-2007. Starting off as a forward, he was converted into a defender but failed to play a single match for the club – instead, his displays in the 2007 FIFA Under 20 World Cup persuaded Italian outfit Udinese to hand Isla a five-year contract.

Afforded his Serie A debut in December 2007, Isla’s pace and stamina down the right flank quickly cemented his role as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation. A slow start to his career in the Italian top-flight produced just one assists over 42 league appearances in his first couple of campaigns before Isla served up six goals and 18 assists in his final 85 league matches before Juventus came calling in June 2012.

Over his two seasons with the “Old Ladyâ€, Isla failed to nail down a regular role. With Stephan Lichsteiner preferred on the right of Juventus’ 3-5-2, the Chilean was afforded just 18 league starts and 11 sub appearances and, over 47 matches in all competitions, chipped in with five assists.

On the international scene, Isla made his senior debut back in September 2007 and has proceeded to play 37 times for his country, including four appearances at Brazil 2014, and found the net on a couple of occasions.

The Prospects

It’s somewhat telling that a change in tactics over the summer has preceded the Chilean’s arrival. Redknapp utilised a 4-4-1-1 in the Championship last season, with the occasional switch to 4-4-2, but the R’s boss has rolled out a 3-4-1-2 in recent matches – given Isla’s familiarity with the system, the new boy should settle quicker in his new environment.

Whilst Isla is versatile enough to be fielded in defence and in the centre of the park, a role on the right of the four-man midfield looks tailor-made and immediately casts doubts over Danny Simpson’s game time for the season ahead. Classified as a defender across the Fantasy games, the Chilean looks poised to offer us an out of position option under Redknapp – earlier today, he was priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), mirroring the cost of fellow new boy Steven Caulker, who netted five goals for Cardiff last time around.

With Rio Ferdinand at 4.5 and looking nailed on, though, many may baulk at a potential price of 5.0, bearing in mind Redknapp’s side mustered just 16 clean sheets in the Championship last term. Isla’s attacking potential could more than atone for that, though; if he can bring his Udinese form, there’s every reason to be optimistic over a player who affords the R’s plenty of top-level experience in the upcoming campaign.

The opening schedule hands the R’s home fixtures against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks and affords Redknapp the chance to make Loftus Road a fortress for the season ahead. With the likes of Ferdinand and Caulker bringing a much-needed quality to the back-three, Isla’s raids down the right could become a familiar for R’s fans this term and he gets off the mark early, has the quality to persuade many to get on board.

I think the problem with Jovetic is if he bombs you'd need 0.5 to get in Dzeko/Giroud/Bony, whereas Dzeko is a straight swap.

Unless you keep 0.5 in the bank of course.

Palace are in the market for a new LB so to start the season it is likely to be Ward at LB and Mariappa at RB, and when a new LB comes in Ward will switch to his preferred RB and Mariappa benched.

Beware you may have to use an early transfer on him.

Ward does seem a safer long term bet (plus better chance of assists / bonus) - probably worth the premium? On the other hand, same can be said for N.Taylor over Hutton!

    Repost due to New Post...

    Alternative Prices and Comparisons

Using the points/million concept I touched on a while ago, I have been able to produce prices that reflect a players worth from the previous season. This is done by dividing the players points total by a number. This number is obtained using the following calculation:

Overall Points Total / Ending Team Value

Basically, you take your total score from last season and divide it by your team value. This will be different for everyone, and for competitive players ranges from between 20-21. For ease, I have used the number 20, as it gives a less complicated figure.

Take this number 20 and use it in a calculation like so:

    Players Total Points / 20

So, lets take Rooney for example. He scored 190 points last season, so:

    190 / 20 = 9.5

Using this calculation, you find that Rooney is worth 9.5M in terms of the points he scored last season, compared to the points you require to achieve for a high finish.

His net price would be this figure divided by his price this season, so

    9.5 - 10.5 = -1.0

A full table with all the calculations can be found here:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dFtSb1Q3PxqvYcD830fp1hgoelG7WMMSaJ1vlQq8VlQ/edit?usp=sharing

Please note, the scores here are based on what you would expect for a top 100k finish, and so the prices are not very close to the actual prices. For this reason, it is easier to view the best priced players. A more accurate price comparison is at the bottom of this post. This uses the average FPL score to determine how players are priced, and the prices I got are extremely close to the FPL prices.

In each position, here are the 'best and worst priced' players, according to how they have been priced, and their 'true' price value:

    GKs:

Best - Howard (2.5) Szcezny (2.35) Mannone and Speroni (2.2 each)
    Worst - Friedel (-4.85) Robles (-4.75) Fabianski (-4.65)

    DEFs:

    Best - Terry (2.1) Coleman (2.0) Fonte (1.95) Mertesacker (1.85)
Worst - Clichy (-2.15) Flanagan and Chiriches (-1.55 each) Ried and Bardsley (1.45 each)

    MIDs:

    Best - Gerrard (1.25) Yaya (1.05) Sidwell (0.8) Noble (0.75)
    Worst - Mata (-2.8) Schurrle (-2.35) Coutinho (-2.3) Ozil (-2.15) Cazorla (-2.1)

    FWDs:

    Best - Lambert (1.45) Giroud (0.85) Rodriguez (0.1)
    Worst - RvP (-6.9) Aguero (-4.2) Negredo (-3.55)

I am aware with the flaws in this, such as game time, and the fact that players like RvP will not drop by say more than 2M from each season. However, it does give an idea of which players are good value, or a bargain. Players who have been supposedly priced incorrectly.

There are some surprises in there. This is because of the data used (top 100k data) so for a more accurate result, use the spreadsheet below.

I have to say, that these numbers are not accurate in relation to the FPL prices. This is because the number I used to divide by was based on a top 100k score. Because of this, the scores have been more cruel to players, as if we are aiming for a high finish, we need to pick the best, and best value players.

I have made an alternate spreadsheet where the scores I calculated are more similar to those FPL priced them by. This is because I used the number 18 to divide by, which is about the average 'points per million' score among the who FPL community.

I did not use this score, as I wanted to have bigger gaps between the scores so that they were easier to differentiate, and because they apply more to the audience on here. If you would like to use the more accurate spreadsheet to view how players should have been priced, it is avaliable here:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dTd0jWbl5tOOCqfCmuRIR3vcFZ-EkagR_1eLAtV2TPg/edit?usp=sharing

I hope you enjoy these, and put them to good use!

    Have a nice day 🙂

I was going to do this, however it became very very difficult to differentiate between the players. If you looks at both spreadsheets, there are players who score high and low at each end of the spectrum, but if you look in between (where the lower scores are that of nailed on options) they all get very close and hard to track.

Yes it is, I took the average points totals and the average captains totals and subtracted them. This was for the second spreadsheet only, not the first one, for the simple reason that the former is not that accurate to begin with. The second one is better to use.

Thanks for doing this, I'll look at it in more detail later. I need some time to get my head round how factoring in the double points might skew the calculations 🙂 After all the armband won't be given to every player equally over the season.

So, you are suggesting that Rooney is not worth the 10.5 (he is worth 9.5, in fact less than 9.0 using my points index)? Yet, everyone has him.

Well, sort of, but not really. Its complicated.

Basically, for 10.5M, if you wanted a good finish then you would want Rooney to score more than 190 points.

The second one is a better picture overall. The first one just points out the 'creme de la creme' so to speak. It shows the very few which have a positive score.

The second one is more accurate and should be used on a whole.

If you look at the second one, then Rooney's score is 0.05, which shows that he was priced accurately at 10.5M.

OK, thanks. Also, if he plays up front, he should easily outscore last season's score

              Exactly.

To calculate the exact number of points you need to him score, use your number (21.5) and multiply it by his price (10.5)

That is the points total he needs to achieve for him to do his part in your team, if you want to get the same amount as points, or more, as last season.

What if you projected the points the players would score had they played every minute of the season? Rooney only played 2445. Projected over the season you would get (3240/2445)*190/20 = 12.59. So when fit, Rooney would perhaps actually be undervalued at 10.5.

The biggest flaw in this model is it completely ignores the captaincy effect.

As an example, if you have Rooney and captain him as little as 20% of the time then his calculation in your example becomes (190 x 1.2) / 20 - 10.5 = +0.9.

Very tempted to do Costa + Siggy -> 8.5 striker and Eriksen.
Problem is finding the right 8.5 striker.

This Stoke defence is really causing me issues. There is no way I am spending 5.5M on ShawX, but don't know whether Huth, Cameron, Pieters, Wilson etc. are going to start week in week out.

He will probably come in as a 6.0 defender so a risk if he doesn't start straight away. Saying that though he probably will start straight away otherwise they wouldn't have forked out all that cash.

I'm currently mulling over this one too. IMO Evans over Jones as Evans is a nailed as it gets in the Utd backline.

Lovren has the best attacking threat so would be fun to have! But Evans has superb fixtures.

Perhaps if you have any other Liverpool players get Evans as it porbably won't be best doubling up with their fixtures.

create two accounts, make two teams and never post a link to both teams here. I remember someone reporting thomass to fpl towers, got one of his teams deleted

The problem comes in the unlikely event that you win FPL - someone may then report you and both / all of your teams may be disqualified.

I remember someone on here recently said they had reported someone for having more than one team on a different game, maybe the Mirror or one of the Newspapers
