In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we look at our captaincy options. We analyse the various ways you can change your captain and also offer our preferred armband strategy up until December, ie, to the point where we have scheduled kick-off times for Premier League matches. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the Armband

Essentially, Fantasy managers are afforded one armband swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Saturday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Friday. The trick here, of course, is to have your captain playing early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player taking to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player who finished the Gameweek as your captain should ideally play on the Saturday the following week.

In The Bank

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap. For example, your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday take your fancy. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to wait until the Friday evening in case of injuries etc and then make the switch before the Gameweek ends, therefore setting yourself up for the following Gameweek. Again, the best tactic here is to select a player with a Saturday fixture, thus giving you the chance to switch on Sunday or Monday.

Trading Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and snap up a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with games also on the Tuesday and Wednesday and potentially have four skippers.

Playing The Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for internationals or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and allows you to perhaps be a little more adventurous with your captain choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we size up each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity – having the likes of Daniel Sturridge as my one skipper for the week would outperform using transfers to have the likes of Nikica Jelavic twice for example. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and prevents you from being stuck with an unwanted captain choice and forced into a transfer. However, as always, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our Captain Plan

As mentioned in previous articles, I think it’s important to have a team made up of players across the price points so we can transfer our premium options around without having to use other transfers to afford them. This means you can handpick your chosen captained big hitter for specific fixtures relatively easily and increase your chances of a big haul – with that in mind, here’s our look at some of the strongest armband options available over the next few Gameweeks.

The blank options are fixtures that are less appealing in terms of Fantasy assets or but can produce the points all the same so it’s an option if you feel like using a transfer or two to go for it.

QPR had a decent number of clean sheets in the Championship last year, but most of them came in the first half of season and now they have vets like Rio to go along with Dunne, and bringing in someone like Caulker. I think they can have a fair number of clean sheets home, like 5-8

    Bego Elliott

    Cahill Lovren Chester Ward Wisdom

Yaya Sterling Eriksen Sigg Bolasie (big season I reckon)

    Costa Rooney Bojan

Hello lads, I seem to be forever tweaking my team and I can't seem to settle for anything.

    De Gea [ Gilks ]
    Luis / Caulker / Huth [ Coloccini / Trippier ]
    Silva / Ramsey / Mata / Henderson / Snodgrass
    Rooney / Costa [Jutkiewicz]

I'll explain my reasoning as I've done with previous RMT's as I seem to get more feedback doing it this way.

De Gea is an obvious choice, Man United should be more defensively sound this campaign and he's a better pick than say Evans, Smalling, or Jones as they are all rotation risks depending on a new CB signing.

Gilks is there because he's cheap, he won't play.

Filipe Luis will be Chelsea's first choice left back all season and he will play the first game week, I don't know why people are debating this whatsoever. He's the cheapest route into the Chelsea defence although a Terry/Cahill offers more goal threat.

Huth is a nice way into the Stoke defence and is 0.5 cheaper than Shawcross, although I'm not 100% sure that Huth is nailed on so I may be changing him at some point.

Caulker is always a goal threat and good pick. I don't expect great things from QPR but he does a job for his price tag IMO. Better than Ferdinand and offers more points too.

Coloccini will be rotated in depending on fixtures and Newcastle are looking sharp in pre-season so I'm expecting a decent season for them. 4.5 is a steal for Colo IMO.

Trippier is Burnley's set piece taker and I'm surprised to see him in so little teams.. his price tag is a little high for a team that probably won't keep many clean sheets although against lower half of the table sides I see him chipping in with assists every now and then.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Silva is a good pick as he's always consistent in FPL, and I'm not sold on having Yaya as he's too expensive, Nasri is a rotation risk with Navas, and Dzeko/Jovetic for City coverage is also too risky for me.

Mata will flourish this season like he did at Chelsea I think, Van Gaal will get him playing back to his best and with Rooney/RVP to distribute to, I expect many assists from him. Plus United have great fixtures.

Ramsey is pretty much the only way into Arsenal's midfield unless you're prepared to pay up for Sanchez which I'm not convinced on. Ramsey will be consistently scoring points this season as much as it pains me to say it.

Henderson is looking good pre-season and looked very good at the end of last season and for 6.0 you can't really go wrong. Nothing special expected of him but decent points from time to time.

Snodgrass is on set pieces for Hull and it's likely he will bag a few goals and assists this season. It was a toss up between him and Siggy, and I'm not sold on Siggy as he's being played as a right winger.

    Rooney is Rooney.

    Costa is Costa.

Can't be arsed writing about Jut.

    Cheers

    THE ESSENTIALS

After careful consideration. I have come up with the six players, two from each position and excluding keepers (which are more open for rotation and negligible points differences) that I would deem ESSENTIAL going into the new season.

    Defenders:

Gary Cahil: Over the course of the full season it is an even money bet that Chelsea will concede the least goals and keep the most clean sheets. Cahil is the best way into that defence as he’s the least at risk of rotation, and he offers a good goal scoring threat. Having a Chelsea defender is a must for anybody long term planning. Cahil is the obvious and least risky choice.

Leighton Baines: Criminally ignored by most of the FFS crowd, Baines is priced at 7m for a reason. He is, pound for pound, million for million, the most guaranteed points accumulator in the entire game. In his last 5 season Baines has scored 20 goals, assisted 34 and kept 42 clean sheets. He will almost certainly score/assist 10-12 goals combined which means 80 points straight away once you include bonuses. He only needs to therefore keep a clean sheet once in every four matches to get, once again, above the 160 mark. People have complained about his poor start with Arsenal & Chelsea and home, combined with Liverpool and Utd away in his first seven fixtures. In those four matches last season Everton kept three clean sheets (and, as ever, got slaughtered at Anfield). In the Arsenal game alone Baines collected 15 points. Ignore the fixtures. Unless he gets injured, there is no defender in the game that each and every week has the points potential that Baines has. Ignoring him costs teams chasing the big prizes again and again and again. Put simply. Invest.

    Midfield:

Aaron Ramsey: At the start of the summer Ramsey’s 9m was talked about as being over the top, already that view has changed to him being a bargain. Ramsey is the natural heir to the Lampards and Gerrards of 7 or 8 years ago. Box to box midfielders who fed on the space created by the attackers. In a team brimming with creative talent, Ramsey is the key man for Arsenal and priced at a full 1.5 less than the more unproven Sanchez, is an absolute non brainer. Build your team around him.

David Silva: (greets intake of breath) There is one problem and one problem only with David Silva. He gets injured, quite a lot. If you took that out of his game you get a player who averages 7 points a match and picks up assists for fun (no player has more in the last four seasons... and he’s played less than the equivalent of 3 seasons in that time). But he’s a risk you say. You’ve just told me he always gets injured. Well yes he does, but rarely for a long time and he tends to be a player who his rested to manage his condition rather than break down in every game a’la Aguero. The solution? Rotate him. Perhaps with Fab or Mata, but also with Eriksen or Sterling who are priced less and will both likely rise. Silva is a not a player to put in your team and casually abandon. But if you manage him correctly, you can pick up his consistent points and cash in on other teams whilst he’s not on the pitch to boot.

    Forwards:

Wayne Rooney: As the new captain of Man Utd and having never achieved less than 142 points in a FF season, Rooney looks very undervalued by those at FF towers. He will surely achieve 200 points minimum this season if he stays injury free (always the forever if) and has the start that dreams are made of. It is completely inexplicable that anyone can enter the season without him in their starting line up. His ownership of 44% reflects just that, given essentially half of the people who play the game are idiots.

Daniel Sturridge: The main man in an attack that brims with pace and verve, even without the departing Suarez. Indeed the latters exit means Sturridge is now essential as he will be the key man to convert the copious chances created by the talent behind him. Sturridge has achieved an absurd 44 goals and 18 assists in the last 3 years. Absurd because he has only played for the equivalent of 64 matches in that time. Giving him a PPG average of 6.6. There is no reason why he shouldn’t keep that up this time around, which would give him a score of 250. Making his price tag of 11.5 worth every, single penny.

And so there it is. Injuries of course play a part, but in the main these are the premium players and so there are good options to transfer them out in such eventualities. Crucially, they are the premium players for a reason. Because for all the punts and promises, these are players who have been there and proved time and time again to be worth investing in (with the possible exception of Ramsey). If you had all six in your team you are probably going to get 1300 plus points between them over the course of the season (factoring in one of them being captain). Indeed, just based on last years figure and taking the captain score as a mean, they would have got you 1200 and Ramsey, Rooney and Silva were missing for long periods in that.

I’m not saying you won’t get close to the leaders unless you have all six of these players in your team. But unless you have at least 3 or 4 I’d be very worried going into the season unless you’re planning for a week 3 wild card.

There are too many quality players in the 8.5M+ bracket of midfielders to say that Ramsey is essential. David Silva, Fabregas, Hazard, Sterling, Mata and Sanchez are all equally good bets and yet we can't fit them all into our teams. Nobody is "essential".

Ramsey is probably the one who is most risky, but if anything he is getting better not worse. The midfielders are the hardest to call no doubt. But I had to pick two and I think those two are still the best bets given the circumstances.

I actually wanted to look at it solely because I have flabbergasted by the anti baines agenda on FFS. Every winning team always has him. He is a points machine. I captained him once and got me 32 points. As a defender? You can still such a march on people who don't have him as he is capable of scoring more than a rivals entire defence on his own.

I don't think people are writing him off entirely, it's just that Everton's bad start to the season mean people will avoid him for the first few gameweeks.

a fixture list that they got 4 wins and a draw out of last time? (from the first 7, and the other fixture being a promoted team) - I just don't see it. Baines gets points against anyone. He's not a Hazard flat track bully.

Too risky? Can't get my head around having bojan as 3rd striker (can't replace him without making too many transferes). So I took out mata, terry and Bojan for young, terry and Bojan.

    Borgo, 4.0
    Hutton, lovren, debuchy, wisdom, Bruce
    Siggi, young, Mutch, fab, Ramsey
    Rooney, Costa, sturridge

    0.5 banked

I was and I still strongly believe he will start but I had 0.5 banked and Cahill is probably gonna get more points anyway so I decided to get Cahill instead

Opinions please? Which combo to score more... Or least in first 6 game weeks anyway?

    A) coutinho, lamela, jovetic

    B) siggy, young, costa

Think about fixtures, plus the fact i'll have 2 mil spare to upgrade to persie if he explodes with option B.
