Martin Jol has made his first meaningful foray into the summer transfer market with the capture of John Arne Riise on a three-year deal from Roma. The move, for an undisclosed fee, sees the Norwegian return to the Premier League following a three year exile and Riise, having spent seven years at Liverpool, will bring plenty experience of England’s top-flight.

The transfer follows on the heels of Hungarian Csaba Somogyi’s move to Craven Cottage as back-up keeper to Mark Schwarzer and the new Fulham manager’s joy was apparent when unveiling his new addition to the ranks:

John Arne Riise is an experienced international left-back who will bring a number of qualities to our squad and provide more options for me. He is used to performing at the very highest level for both club and country, and is an accomplished player defensively, who can also contribute to our attacking play.

I am extremely happy that we’ve been able to add him to our squad, and believe that he will prove a valuable addition as we progress.

The Statistics

Riise rose through the youth ranks at Aalesund and played just one season in his homeland -scoring 5 goals in 25 appearances- before being snapped up by AS Monaco. He spent three seasons in France, but failed to properly establish himself under Claude Puel and played only 44 games, scoring 4 goals, before making his way to Anfield in the summer of 2001.

Riise’s seven campaigns at Liverpool included, of course, the Champions League win in 2005 and his lethal left-foot saw him grab 21 goals in 234 games for the Merseyside giants. As time progressed, Benitez’s tendency to favour Fabio Aurelio limited his game time and the Norwegian resultantly left these shores for Roma. Over the past three seasons, Riise has played 99 league games in Serie A, scoring 7 goals.

Last season saw him grab 5 assists, with only Francesco Totti- who picked up 8- managing more as the club finished sixth in Italy’s top flight. The club’s acquisition of highly-rated Sporting Gijon 21 year old left-back José Ãngel this summer meant Riise was surplus to requirements and at the age of 30, should still have a few good years to offer the Cottagers.

The Prospects

The signing of Riise certainly backs up Jol’s promise to bring attacking football to the club this upcoming season. Fulham may have finished eighth last time round but they found the net just 49 times, with their game based more on defensive solidity under Hughes.

With just 43 goals conceded, Fulham had the joint-fourth best defence in the Premier League, with only the top three conceding less goals, and it’s worth noting that last season Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes -Fulham’s only first-choice defenders during Sparky’s tenure- ended as first and second for “Value†in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Hangeland started at 5.5 and racked up 154 points, whereas Hughes came in at 5.0 and picked up 129 points.

Just quite how much Jol’s brand of football may diminish Fulham’s defensive potential remains to be seen, though Riise’s threat going forward -similar to Hangeland- should see him balance out any drop in clean sheets and offer a Fantasy alternative to his compatriot at the back.

Not sure if it's common knowledge, but TFF - Telegraph Fantasy Football - is open for business. Might sate your desire for a little while.

It's FF-lite. You only get 30 transfers total. And there are usually some underpriced gems that are essential. Pick those, and some big guns, and then forget about it for a few weeks till you get some injuries.

Yeah like someone said a lot of casual players will be signing up now and since FPL isn't open yet they will go for another game like the suns one. So they lose out on players.

I don't think they'll lose out on players - as long as it remains free. It probably just means that people will have several games/teams on the go in several places.

Just wondering what rule changes will the powers that be at FPL come up with this season? What about having to pick a manager for your squad? Managers priced accordingly with obvioulsy the likes of SAF & Wegner being top prices. 3 points for a win, one for a draw... Just something ran through my head when going insane waiting for the game launch 🙂

Thanks! Could say the same thing about certain players though - everyone would love to have the likes of Rooney, Lamps, Cole etc but it is being able to get the balance right that is key. Same thing would materialise if had to pick a manager. Everyone would have Fergie first choice but someone like Holloway in first half of last season could prove a real differential !!

Every day the situation changes with Sneijder so who really knows. I'm tired of hearing about it and would rather focus on the upcoming season. I hope he'll give our youth players a chance to shine if we can't bring in a top central MF.

This could be Andersons year i think!!

The question is , is the situation actually changing with sneijder at all?

          He says hes happy
Inter say hes not for sale
United say they wont go for him

Its been pretty much the same the whole time!

I did reply to this on the last page, and I don't know why I'm giving something so ridiculous so much time but anyway...

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/07/14/scout-report-john-arne-riise/comment-page-3/#comment-1720480

When they're pricing up players, they'll presumably take into account the following factors:

    1. Current club - challenging at the top or the bottom?
    2. Points potential this season
    3. Points gained last season
    4. How many people owned him last season
    5. His starting price last season

How can anyone argue that point 5 is anything other than trivial?

Id hardly call it trivial, its a guideline for sure!

If they look at a player who has barely improved in a year (point 2 maybe) they will say to themselves, well, he was 6 last season, so hes 6 this season!!

if tho, they look at chicharito and go...well...this is a different player to the one we priced last season, clearly the guideline will be, it needs to be much higher then last season.

      but still, not trivial imo

        *facepalm*

Yes, they'll look at Chicarito under points 1, 2, 3 and 4. Point 5 is the trivial one.

Carroll's price will be the one that settles it, but yes Adam is another one. He'll be considerably higher than 5.0 this time round (and like Ireland's 5.5 - 9.0 rise, won't be worth it).

I reckon so too but... let's wait 🙂

I would also like to see a little sense thrown in with players likely to be rotated. Nani at 7.5 would get some interest but at 9.0, I doubt it.

The only time they'd go with five is when there hasn't been a signficant change in any of the first four from the same time last season, I would imagine.

Charlie Adam's price will take into account the fact that he won;t play every game (you could count that under point two). I'd imagine he'll be around seven and a half. Carroll maybe 8.5.

I agree with you, MnL. I can't see Carroll being less than 8.5m, possibly 9.0

I hope the latter, otherwise jonah will pull out the "Stephen Ireland" card (which you handed to him).

The Dempsey example had probably more to do with the fact that Fulham went from miraculously avoiding relegation to Europa Cup Finalists in a very short period of time.

Has anyone read Sh*t My Dad Says? One of the funniest books I've ever bought. Two of my favourites:

On selling his beloved 1967 2-door Mercury Cougar - "This is what happens when you have a family. You sacrifice. [Pause] You sacrifice a lot. [Long pause] it's gonna be in your best interest to stay away from me for the next few days."

On Pringles flavours- "I'm not eating something called 'pizzalicious.' That's not even a fu*king adjective. You can't just add 'licious' to nouns. That's bullsh*t."

Whether Adam starts every game is open to question. O'Hara might be a better move. QPR wise Taarabt is a possibility assuming he's still there. Goalkeeper wise I'd look at Given if he moves to AV.

Said this on the suns terms and conditions
"For both FREE and PREMIUM entries the Game is only open to those aged 18 years or over at the time of registration and is only open to any eligible person residing in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland. Failure to observe these requirements will mean that any potential winning entry is invalid and all winnings will be forfeited."

I suppose on the plus side this delayed start will mean fewer teams, and we may avoid the logjams that made the FPL site often unusable early last season.
