Welcome to our annual attempt to pick the best and worst options in the Fantasy Premier League game and assess how the forthcoming Premier League season will shape up.

As usual many of  our last season predictions proved to be terrible.

Among the worst of our predictions was Mark’s assertion that Andreas Weimann would be the best differential and highest scoring budget forward in FPL and Paul’s belief that Roberto Soldado would finish the year as top Premier League goal scorer.

My forecast that Kolo Toure would be the best budget defender and Crystal Palace would be relegated proved equally embarrassing.

Applebonkers was also left with egg on his face by labelling Hull defender Curtis Davies as the worst signing of 2013/14, while Granville’s optimism that Iago Aspas would be the best differential in FPL was another of our top clangers.

There were some predictions we nailed, though. Evs correctly reckoned Southampton would overachieve, while Fulham would falter. Andy and Mark can also feel pleased for themselves for correctly naming Seamus Coleman as the best budget defender in FPL last season.

Hopefully we shall all do better with this series of predictions for the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

Terry/Fab or Jones/Hazard? Not keen on United defence at the moment but I prefer Haz to Fab. Tough one but probably my last decision pending tomorrows press conferences.

    Any thoughts?

      Jones/Hazard for me
Age might have caught up with JT & Man.Utd should be better at the back under Van Gall
Also Hazard will always play further forward than Fabregas & should still be on Chelsea's penalties

Long will take Lambert's No. 7. Big shoes to fill but shows he is firmly in Koeman's first team plans, at least until J-Rod is fit. I'm still smarting from the 12m fee but I'm sure no Saint will mind if he gets a couple of goals in the first few weeks.

Gardos has taken the No. 5, confirming his status as Lovren's replacement. Really excited about that one.

he was very good when he got a chance last season. There have been few getting him and asking if he nailed on. This ends any interest in him

However I agree, long term he is not good enough

I agree, there never should have been one. But I did with the same with Targett and promised you all he'd be replaced and you ignored me so I can't say I'm that surprised. 😛

Yoshida's just suited to completely different football. Think he could be very good in a less physical league as his reading of the game is superb, as is his vision. Unfortunately, he just can't deal with the pace and power of PL attackers.

Think he'll be great but I'm holding off on FPL. 7.5m is a lot for a team that has so many new players and may take a while to gel. Plus Koeman said that he thought Tadic had work to do to be at PL speed, in terms of passing etc.

Considered it, but he's not done much preseason and his record in the PL was poor when he was last here. Fair punt though.

Is there any consensus for defence? It seems to me that a lot of the forwards/midfielders are broadly similar but the back lines vary drastically.

I think one big hitter in the 5.5 to 6.5 range plus rotating starters is the way to go. Can't say I agree with teams with 2-3 4.0 defenders who aren't nailed on.

Why is everyone so dismissive of Ideye Brown, when he's not even played yet? Comes from a physical league and has played at Champions League level as well as internationally...

I agree the Baggies don't look great this season (come on Pearce - get your chequebook out we need another striker, a defender and winger...) and wouldn't rule them out of a bottom three position, but I don't get the assumption that Ideye is going to be a flop.
