Arsenal enjoyed a Carling Cup walk in the St James’ Park as they overpowered a second-string Newcastle in their own backyard. The fleet-footed Theo Walcott stole the show, notching a brace of goals to remind both Arsene Wenger and us Fantasy Managers of his devastating form before injury temporarily de-railed his campaign. Elsewhere, extra-time wins for Villa and West Ham saw them progress to the last eight in another night of cup squad rotation merriment…

Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner pushed their claims for starting roles with goals in the convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park. Walcott, in particular, looked sharp and provided plenty of concern for the home defence with his pace and movement. Given his outstanding start to the season, it will be interesting to see how Wenger deals with his availability for the forthcoming fixtures.

Wenger’s lineup last night saw Laurent Koscielny return from a back problem to bolster a defence that also included Johan Djourou, with Emmanuel Eboue and Kieran Gibbs starting at full-back. Elsewhere the eleven was completed by a mix of players who are likely to find themselves on the bench against West Ham this weekend – Denilson, Carlos Vela and Craig Eastmond – and those who will be pushing for inclusion – Tomas Rosicky, Bendtner and of course Walcott. Despite the goalscoring feats, those three would seem likely to start life on the bench, such is the competition for starts. Gibbs will be a doubt however, he limped off early on with what has been reported as a knee injury – another niggle for the young left-back.

Cesc Fabregas was introduced mid-way through the second-half by Wenger as the Gunners boss look to sharpen up his skipper. Typically Fabregas contributed the assists for Bendtner’s second and Arsenal’s third.

Chris Hughton made a string of changes to his eleven, handing starts to the likes of Ryan Taylor, Tamas Kadar, Alan Smith, Haris Vuckic, Peter Lovenkrands and Nile Ranger – all of which are unlikely to trouble the teamsheet come the visit of Sunderland on Sunday.

The start for Wayne Routledge, and perhaps even Mike Williamson at the back, puts question marks over their inclusion in Sunday’s starting eleven. Routledge has lost his place of late and Jonas Gutierrez seems likely to continue on the left-flank. Williamson’s situation seems more secure in the short-term but with Sol Campbell and Steven Taylor battling back to fitness, his starting role is clearly coming under increased threat.

One final footnote, Joey Barton picked up a late booking last night – his fourth of the campaign putting him on the suspension tightrope. One more yellow and he faces a one-match ban; not a great scenario given the cauldron expected for Sunday’s local derby with Sunderland.

Aston Villa progressed to the last eight thanks to strikes from Emile Heskey and an extra-time winner from Stewart Downing. The victory came at a price though – Marc Albrighton seeing red for hauling back Burnley’s Wade Elliot; Albrighton will now miss Sunday’s local derby with Birmingham – a blow to his Fantasy owners who have already questioned his first XI security of late.

Houllier is quickly running out of attacking options for Sunday’s game with Gabby Agbonlahor already ruled out. John Carew will also be a doubt after pulling out of last night’s tie late on through illness. That meant that Ashley Young started the match in the strikers role, with Stephen Ireland pushed up in support. Ireland will now likely maintain his role “in the hole” against Birmingham, with Young shifted to a wide role and Heskey brought back in to lead the attack. Steve Sidwell looks set to get the opportunity to make a claim for a run of starts with club skipper Stylian Petrov sidelined for two months. Sidwell started last night and, given Albrighton’s suspension, looks set to get the nod again on Sunday. Stephen Warnock was suspended for last night’s tie having picked up his fifth booking of the season at the weekend – he will therefore make a return against Birmingham.

Victor Obinna and Manuel da Costa chose the Carling Cup to register their first goals of the season after weeks of threatening in the Premier League. The pair struck in extra-time to hand the Hammers’ passage to the last eight but it was the performance of the ever-reliable Scott Parker that caught the eye. Parker headed West Ham’s equaliser to take the tie into the extra period and provided the catalyst for much of the home side’s attacking play on the night.

Following his quality strike against United, Tony Pulis handed a start to Tuncay, slotting him alongside Kenwyne Jones up front against the Hammers. Jones had given Stoke an early lead from a Jermaine Pennant corner, but Tony Pulis was unable to keep both players on the pitch due to illness. Jones and Pennant were duly replaced in the second-half, a forced change which Pulis later identified as a turning point in the tie after the efforts of West Ham’s subs – Mark Noble and Victor Obinna – proved decisive factors in the win.

From a Fantasy perspective we now have to consider that Jones and Pennant, along with Matt Etherington who missed the game with a knock sustained against United, as doubts for the trip to Goodison this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Where's tosey...
8 point hit. Ouch. I'm in the same boat as you. Havent used my WC and wanted to hold onto it. I've already brought in Fabs for Gerrard (had to on sat night otherwise couldnt afford) and now this Tevez crap had really annoyed me. This was finally going to be 'hit free' week!
Looking at Arsenal's fixtures im thinking Tevez to Chamakh for 3 weeks (4 point hit) makes sense, but i'd need Tevez to fall 0.3m to afford to get him back again. Seems a risk considering i want Tevez long term. Thoughts?

I would have done that, but did the nasri transfer yesterday before the price rise. Still tempted, will have to bring in fabs at some point, so avoid the risk of losing out this week.

Option 2 is Tevez to Hernandez, but that's short term, and can't do petrov to Fabs then.

Hmmm, I guess I can leave any other transfers until this news of this Tevez situation is confirmed by Mancini.

At least the ultra midfield can be potentially be completed now without me having to sacrifice Malouda.

Will probably be Elmander coming in for Tev and Ethers out for Fab.

These will be my last points hits for a while now - just gonna make do with the one a week and just plod along for a few weeks.

I bought Tevez for 10.4m so could sell him for 10.7m. I figure he'll dop to at least 10.9 so I won't lose too much.

Its very much a case of Berba or Chamakh for me, despite the poor form of both. Think I'll plump for the latter for 2/3 game weeks, hopefully he;ll rise and then get Tevez back in. Tho I do have cash to spare.

I am not one of the Arsenal squad but I agree with Mark above that Walcott is unlikely to start but has every chance of coming on, Chamakh will start I think with Bendtner still a bit away from full fitness, in short, I wouldn't be going for Walcott or Bendtner this weekend, but I will have Cesc and that is enough for me

really? Elmander? I know he hasn't scored at home but it is only a matter of time and its Liverpool, I don't buy this talk from the likes of Joe Cole "we've turned a corner" and all that, first, it's Joe Cole saying that, and second, it's Liverpool he's talking about!

I just think Sunderland are better at the back than Liverpool at the moment, and I fancy Elmander to cause all sorts of trouble for "Cruise Liner" Carragher, interesting anyway and cheers for the input

I would predict .2 decrease for Tevez if he goes red. Thats .1 this week and .1 next. Mere speculation of course.

It could be a good move by Mankini to let him go home for a couple of weeks and come back fit and refreshed for the Manc derby, hes played every league game and most of the cups too with Santa Cruz blacklisted, Mario, Ade and Jo often being injured.

Is the starting XI and bench order right for this week?:

          Krul,
          Elmo,O'Shea,Coleman,
          Nani,Malouda,Fabs(C),Adam,VdV,
          Drogs,Elmander.

          Subs: Foster,Odemwingie,Jara,Samba.

Managed to get Fabs in last night for -4.Is it worth taking another hit to do VdV->Nasri as well?

            Robinson/Foster
Coleman • Shawcross • Jose Enrique • Jones • Stam
            Adam • Malouda • Nani • Bale • Etherington
            Drogba • Carroll • Tevez

            Bale ➜ Fabs
            Tevez ➜ Chamakh (-4pts)

            Agree?

Might mean 4pts to get Tevez back, did only get him in GW9 so won’t lose any money on him.

If you are captaining Fabregas I would say go for it in circumstances where Petrov is off form and Tevez could be out for 2-3 games, but I would wait for more confirmation on Tevez situation, Fabregas is a season keeper and is worth 4, Elmander is probably more of a short term option with form and fixtures on his side, I say yes.

That was my thinking.. will probably wait until price changes come into play, although if tevez has been sent to argentina don't think he'll be back too soon...

A bit gutted, if I hadn't done yesterday's transfer would have brought in Fabs and Hernandez..Stupidly trying to avoid price rises!

To be fair to them was a pretty good post last week. Coleman, elmo and the potential of Boswinga highlighted.

Pretty annoying as it does hurt the differential from all those goons who just follow the pundit every week (I know one guy who's transfers you can almost predict every week by reading the pundit's recommendations and checking which big name player scored the most points the previous week).

I don't fancy doubling up on any defence this season, I would have Jara in there for Knight, to save some cash and to give yourself more options on rotating defenders, Jara and Simpson rotate okay and are dirt cheap.

Bosingwa is still a bit of an unknown for me, but I reckon it is safe to take a few risks on WC week as regards selection (I brought in Rooney for crying out loud!)

              Midfield is splendid.

Would not be doubling up on United attackers, in circumstances where you plan to take both of them out in due course, I would only go for one (Berbatov) and have Elmander/Carroll in there for Hernandez

TM - TevezGate and the ballsed up Wildcard
What I would like to know is peoples opinion on his likely price changes in light of protection etc. I’ve never really studied it that closely before so I’m interested in this scenario
            I bought Tevez for 10.9
            He is now worth 11.0
            I sell him for 10.9
I cannot afford to re sign him for 11.0
Is he likely to drop in the next couple of weeks if the injury proves to be true? Or is the safer option to keep hold of the little orc as ideally I would like him long term? Now I know you cant possibly say for sure but I’m interested in any similar scenario’s from the last season or so – basically would I be a tool to keep or a tool to bin?

He is a good chance to be 10.8 come Sunday 2am. Another 0.1 next week is likely minimum. If it's only 2 weeks I may keep him & save the trades & draw on the depth of the squad.

Oh what an awful bad luck wildcard - primary reason was to bring in Tevez and he gets himself crocked the little nobgoblin, plus last GW must be the first of the season where Tevez, Drogba, Berbatov, Nani, Fabregas, Adam ALL did shite.
