As last season’s top two prepare to battle it out at the Etihad later tonight, we look back at the nine fixtures played out over the Gameweek so far. Chelsea’s strength at both ends of the pitch, Arsenal’s talismanic Welshman, the impact of Mauricio Pochettino at the Lane and the worrying lack of resilience on offer at Crystal Palace are amongst today’s lunchtime menu.

Wenger wants to play Sanchez down the middle but can’t afford to. Yet…
Granted, the Chilean was ineffective through the centre at Goodison on Saturday but Arsene Wenger’s teamsheet spelt out the intent. Post-match, the Gunners manager admitted Sanchez is still lacking in sharpness after hooking the new boy at half-time and it’s clear he’s not quite ready to plough the lone furrow. Replacement Olivier Giroud was wasteful but his presence changed the match, suggesting the Frenchman – providing he shakes off an ankle problem – could lead the line until the new boy acclimatises to his new surroundings.

The raiding Ramsey goes on proving his worth…
The Welshman’s ability to anticipate opportunities and find his way into the opponents box goes on providing goals. Ramsey hasn’t started the season well in general play but has converted a pair of opportunities from two yards out, underlining the predatory nature that has elevated him to heavy-hitter Fantasy status. It’s difficult to argue against the “essential” tag right now.

Everton’s pressing game is costing them goals…
The Toffees’ sluggish start has seen them let a lead slip three times over their two league matches so far. Fatigue is clearly playing a part as Roberto Martinez’ side take their time to become reacquainted with his high pressing tactics, and although the Everton boss admitted after the Arsenal draw that “we dropped our energy levels”, there’s seems little chance he’ll change his tactical approach. As Seamus Coleman showed at the weekend, we may have to rely on attacking returns from the Merseysiders’ backline until their math sharpness is up to scratch.

Hughes will look to project Bojan…
The signs already look ominous after the Spaniard was benched for Stoke’s first road trip of the season. Even with hosts Hull down to 10 men after only 14 minutes, Mark Hughes waited until just before half-time to unleash Bojan at the KC – suggesting that he’s keen to gradually ease him into life in the Premier League. Fantasy managers can’t afford the former Barcelona man such patience, though, and with Everton’s Steven Naismith offering an obvious exit route, the Potters’ summer signing could be set for an exodus.

The Ivanovic engine is a potent weapon…
Jose Mourinho’s decision to retain faith in last season’s back-four has seen the Serbian flourish at right-back. Ivanovic’s tireless overlapping runs have made him integral to Chelsea’s attacking ploys, and with a goal and assist in his first two outings, that 7.1 price tag still looks good value right now. Filipe Luis may have to wait a little longer for his top-flight introduction, and while Gary Cahill and John Terry look equally secure in the heart of the back-four, Ivanovic is the stand-out back-line option right now for the Blues.

Clinical Costa is providing a cutting edge…
Two goals from two appearances underlines the summer signing’s predatory nature in and around the box. With Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas both providing plenty of creativity, Costa will continue to be fed with numerous chances as he looks to replicate last term’s 27 goals for Atletico Madrid. Hazard had it all his own way last season, but with Fabregas pulling the strings in the centre of the park and Costa looking the ideal talisman up top for Jose Mourinho’s side, the attacking options could sway many to double or even triple up if the current trend continues.

…and other teams are lacking just that….
Goals have been hard to come by for the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle, Southampton and the promoted sides thus far. As many teams look to keep it tight at the back, there’s stronger potential for clean sheets on offer, thus enabling us to find budget and mid-price options for defensive returns. The Magpies will be hoping Siem de Jong can makes an impact at home to Palace next weekend, while both Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle also offer hope for the Saints, but at the moment, it’s difficult to look beyond their defences as a source of potential returns.

We have to question the Palace rearguard…
Despite the encouraging opening day showing, conceding three to West Ham on home turf rings alarm bells and has to have us re-assessing the worth of the Eagles’ defensive assets. Palace managed 12 clean sheets in the final 28 Gameweeks of the previous campaign after parting company with Ian Holloway but the resilience instilled by Tony Pulis seems to have quickly ebbed away – unless they can sort themselves out, more owners will be seeking alternatives sooner rather than later.

Swansea’s 4-5-1 isn’t helping Bony’s pitch time…
Hooked off just after the hour mark at home to Burnley, with Bafetimbi Gomis available as an option, Wilfried Bony owners seem unlikely to get 90 minutes from their man right now. It may well be that the Ivorian is still lacking in match sharpness after a late return to training following World Cup duties but, with Garry Monk determined to retain a lone striker system after a brief flirtation with 4-4-2 proved disastrous in the summer, the current situation merely compounds the value offered by Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Swans midfield.

We can add Chadli to the mid-price midfield chocolate box…
While a price of 5.5-6.0 won’t buy too many assurances (Sigurdsson aside, it seems), there’s a whole cast of options making themselves known in that bracket that warrant at least a passing glance. Nacer Chadli added his name to that list with an unlikely brace for Spurs as the Mauricio Pochettino effect quickly takes hold in the Tottenham attack. The Argentine transformed the Fantasy fortunes of Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez at Southampton last season and his impact also brings Erik Lamela into contention in the mid-price bracket – a 4-0 win over QPR was accomplished without a goal or assist for Christian Eriksen, suggesting the Dane has real competition as the best route into the north London club’s flourishing midfield.

It’s folly to write Mata off…
United may be struggling for any semblance of consistency under Louis van Gaal but the little Spaniard is still managing to pick up the points. Sold by almost 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers after failing to make an impact in the season opener at home to Swansea, Mata struck his seventh goal in the previous eight league matches for the Red Devils – a superb strike rate that highlights his capabilities from a central role. With the fixtures still firmly in his favour, that 19% ownership will surely rise again if he can maintain his current form, though it remains to be seen whether the imminent arrival of Angel di Maria will force a change in formation from the new man in charge.

Zarate could be the spark the Hammers require…
Benched for the season opener at home to Spurs as Sam Allardyce opted for Carlton Cole up front, the little Argentine’s first start proved instrumental for the West Ham last weekend. With Kevin Nolan sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained in training, Zarate tucked in behind Cole in the attacking midfield three and grabbed his chance with both hands, inspiring Allardyce’s side to a 3-1 win at Palace – Nolan is expected to be out for six weeks but may find it difficult to retain his starting position if the South American can push on from his weekend showing.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thinking of using my Wildcard to make 3 transfers!

    Krul / Myhill

    Jones / Luis / Clyne / Chambers/ Wisdom

    Mata / Ramsey / Fabregas / Sterling / Albrighton

    Rooney / Costa / Bojan

    * What are thoughts on....

    Bojan > Naismith
    Luis >Lovren
    Chambers > Coloccini

That team is too good to use a WC on.

If you do decide to though change Myhill for Given, much less chance of a price fall in the future.

Elliot also ok to make sure you always have a starter GK if you don't think you will ever have a problem with 3 newcastle limit.

Think I'd rather take a -8 than use my WC on three transfers.

Chambers to Col is probably the priority of those three, so use your FT on that.

Right. I wouldn't switch someone out I thought would score points. Contemplating Bego>Forster right now. Not exciting at all but with Bego dropping and City up next seems the prudent move.

Really isn't about being priced out. Have 2.5m ITB. I just think Bego is a road to nowhere right now and he's about to drop as well while Forster looks set for points.

Way I see it as well. Problem is I have both Bego and Blackett dropping. I don't understand Blackett being at over 100% as he was protected all of last week.

For some reason I see keepers as slightly different, injury or long suspension aside I like to stay with same one over whole season and they tend to give you an average points anyway. So their price doesn't seem relevant if keeping.
Never been a fan of trying to rotate or swap to maximise points from keeper, very easy to get wrong

A hit for a long term move is fine. If you can easily make those 4 points back (for example, a non playing defender to a playing defender in a team keeping clean sheets), then do it.

Pretty annoyed that Blackett is dropping. He'll play for at least a few more weeks and could easily pull in some cleanies with new players arriving and unfit players getting fit. Think I'll hold him but it's really annoying.

Bego>Forster on the other hand seems a no brainer to me.

        Afternoon gents, thoughts appreciated:

        A) Hazard, Dzeko

        B) Aguero, Henderson/Chadli

Have the 2 FT transfer to switch from A -> B and no other City / Liverpool coverage (have Costa for Chelsea). Would only make the switch assuming Aguero looks sharp tonight and he would get the armband next week vs Stoke.

        0 Assists

        Fabregas
        7 chances created

Are Cesc's passes just higher quality, or has Hazard been unlucky?

          Things to be clarified:

WBA: Berahino plays on the right, Dorrans in the hole.

SOU: Davis plays on the right, JWP in the hole.

EVE: Naismith played in a false #9 position at he tip of a disguise 4-4-2 diamond. Lukaku attacker from the right, Mirallas from the left. In midfield Barry "ha la" Gerrard, Osman interior left and McCarthy interior left.

NEW: Cabella plays on the right, Sissoko in the hole (but they exchange a lot)

TOT: Lamela played on the right, Eriksen in the hole. That after Pochettino did exactly the opposite @WHU.

I don't understand how can they be errors if they were predictions before the match? They played in a different position this weekend, that doesnt mean it will happen all the time. Sorry, i'm just going to go on their position on who scored as i've always done. Thanks for bringing it up though, will try and incorporate some of what you're saying next time. End of the day, the 11 players are most important, not whether they might be playing in the hole or out wide, something which i can't know when doing them. And in any case, they sometimes swap positions throughout the game as you've said.

                      Hi Demi,

First of all thanks for taking the time.
Then just a reminder that i raised this question on Friday

Then again i respect your work as its truly one of the best on this site (specially the updates and line-ups). But i guess you would like to be correct on everything.

So especially on WBA and SOU its clear that the positions are wrong.

I raised the question because in same cases that could lead to "picking" the wrong player basing on what is said here.

I'v just seen numerous mentions on articles to JWP being a apart from the SOU from three and Berahino playing in the hole.

                      Thanks.

Thanks for the comments, and no worries. Was JWP in the hole during the first match aswell? It's impossible to get all the positions correct every match, as they won't be like that all the time. Okay, if Berahino wasn't in the hole, but he could be in another game, and also be upfront in another. Been using whoscored.com as a guide, and it's served me well so likely to stick with that. But appreciate your comments.

                        Cheers

I no that its difficult but on those cases, positions of JWP, Berahino and Sissoko are all wrong in the section "Team News" and in the vast majority of Weakly Articles. And after 2 games its safe to take them as new tactical addictions from their managers.

The Newcastle trio (Cabella, Sissoko and Gouffran) exchange a lot but Sissoko its clearly the one more central.

                          Just trying to help.

                          Cheers

JWP looks in the hole, but Davis is central.

Ok Ryan, take it as you like.
I'm just giving my input (i saw the hole game), and i think there is an error that needs correction.
It's probably ok between Lamela and Eriksen, but in the cases of WBA, SOU and NEW its clear.

Not sure that Naismith role will last. he'll start but he may go wide again. I think Lukaku wide was a ploy by RM to expose Monreal

Any thoughts for this week? 1FT & zero in bank.

              Krul (Foster)
              Terry, Jones, N Taylor
              Ramsey, Sterling, Siggy, Erik
              Rooney, Costa (c), Dzeko

              Bruce, Pieters, Marney

Thinking of just sticking or maybe Pieters>Coloccini.

As long as Bartley is bench fodder, he's fine there for now. Just address him when WC time comes around. Can't see him dropping below 3.9 with ownership so low anyway.

I have Ward and Caulker in my team who will both drop .1 this week.

I really want to save my FT and roll it on to next week. Only problem is if I save it I essentially lose the ability to spend that .4 anywhere.

Worth keeping Caulker for one more week and sacrificing that .4?

Considerin Rodwell and Cattermole look nailed on in the pivot and AJ(when back) Fletcher and Wickham look the same upfront.. is larsson in direct competition with Gomez for a starting spot? that cant be good.. still considerin him though

An update on the Saints after being at St Marys Saturday:

Pelle - currently a shocking FPL prospect. Looks like he needs a goal to get some confidence. Barely touched the ball, couldn't win a header (against an average defence) and when he did get the ball his first touch was appalling. Get rid!

Ward Prowse - showed his set piece potential again with a long range free kick that hit the post but didn't look comfortable in the hole at all. I was looking to get him in for Mutch but reluctant on this showing

Tadic - in and out of the game but looked like the only player who might spark us into life. Showed flashes of class but still finding his feet. Think he could be an FPL prospect.

Fonte - looked very solid against very average opposition

Clyne - didn't really get beyond the half way line (credit to West Brom packing the midfield)

Yoshida - a mistake waiting to happen, would expect Gardos in next week

Forster - our only real highlight in an awful game. Took command of his box, came for crosses and made a crucial save late on. Looks solid and more reliable than Boruc was.

Long - came on but played almost wide right. Barely in the game

Koeman stuck with his 4 3 3 but it really did not work at all. Ward Prowse looks lost in the hole. Pelle couldn't hold the ball up to bring Tadic or Long into the game. Schneiderlin and Wanyama occupy the same space. Very disapointed Cork isnt starting instead of Wanyama as we lacked someone getting their foot on the ball.

Overall, very disapointing. No plan B when the opposition decides to come to St Marys for a point and pack the midfield.

Does JWP have all set-pieces or does Tadic take some?

Yup,, basically my thoughts after the game too. if JWP gets dropped it'll add to Tadic's appeal cause of set pieces so he looks mint. and Bertrand looks like he'll match/do better than Clyne playin on the same side as Tadic tbh. for those of us who cant afford the 0.1

The way United handles these next 4 games will determine their season. It's only going to get harder from here, can't keep dropping points in the easy games, if they do it might make last seasons league placement look good.

Not sure it will translate to FPL. He's very unselfish. United will see the benefit much more than his FPL owners I think.

I think he is a very intelligent player but his overall pace makes him so much better on the wing. His passing isn't the greatest in my opinion.

He played as the most advanced midfielder in a 4-3-3 last season. And obviously is also a very good winger, wide in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1.
But i don't think that qualifies him to sit in a midfield 2 of a 5-2-1-2

Winger or attacking midfielder, and does track back, but is not a defensive player

Best player in UCL last year.
                          Unbelievable energy.

Winger or in a 3 man midfield, he is world class.
