As last season’s top two prepare to battle it out at the Etihad later tonight, we look back at the nine fixtures played out over the Gameweek so far. Chelsea’s strength at both ends of the pitch, Arsenal’s talismanic Welshman, the impact of Mauricio Pochettino at the Lane and the worrying lack of resilience on offer at Crystal Palace are amongst today’s lunchtime menu.

Wenger wants to play Sanchez down the middle but can’t afford to. Yet…
Granted, the Chilean was ineffective through the centre at Goodison on Saturday but Arsene Wenger’s teamsheet spelt out the intent. Post-match, the Gunners manager admitted Sanchez is still lacking in sharpness after hooking the new boy at half-time and it’s clear he’s not quite ready to plough the lone furrow. Replacement Olivier Giroud was wasteful but his presence changed the match, suggesting the Frenchman – providing he shakes off an ankle problem – could lead the line until the new boy acclimatises to his new surroundings.

The raiding Ramsey goes on proving his worth…
The Welshman’s ability to anticipate opportunities and find his way into the opponents box goes on providing goals. Ramsey hasn’t started the season well in general play but has converted a pair of opportunities from two yards out, underlining the predatory nature that has elevated him to heavy-hitter Fantasy status. It’s difficult to argue against the “essential” tag right now.

Everton’s pressing game is costing them goals…
The Toffees’ sluggish start has seen them let a lead slip three times over their two league matches so far. Fatigue is clearly playing a part as Roberto Martinez’ side take their time to become reacquainted with his high pressing tactics, and although the Everton boss admitted after the Arsenal draw that “we dropped our energy levels”, there’s seems little chance he’ll change his tactical approach. As Seamus Coleman showed at the weekend, we may have to rely on attacking returns from the Merseysiders’ backline until their math sharpness is up to scratch.

Hughes will look to project Bojan…
The signs already look ominous after the Spaniard was benched for Stoke’s first road trip of the season. Even with hosts Hull down to 10 men after only 14 minutes, Mark Hughes waited until just before half-time to unleash Bojan at the KC – suggesting that he’s keen to gradually ease him into life in the Premier League. Fantasy managers can’t afford the former Barcelona man such patience, though, and with Everton’s Steven Naismith offering an obvious exit route, the Potters’ summer signing could be set for an exodus.

The Ivanovic engine is a potent weapon…
Jose Mourinho’s decision to retain faith in last season’s back-four has seen the Serbian flourish at right-back. Ivanovic’s tireless overlapping runs have made him integral to Chelsea’s attacking ploys, and with a goal and assist in his first two outings, that 7.1 price tag still looks good value right now. Filipe Luis may have to wait a little longer for his top-flight introduction, and while Gary Cahill and John Terry look equally secure in the heart of the back-four, Ivanovic is the stand-out back-line option right now for the Blues.

Clinical Costa is providing a cutting edge…
Two goals from two appearances underlines the summer signing’s predatory nature in and around the box. With Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas both providing plenty of creativity, Costa will continue to be fed with numerous chances as he looks to replicate last term’s 27 goals for Atletico Madrid. Hazard had it all his own way last season, but with Fabregas pulling the strings in the centre of the park and Costa looking the ideal talisman up top for Jose Mourinho’s side, the attacking options could sway many to double or even triple up if the current trend continues.

…and other teams are lacking just that….
Goals have been hard to come by for the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle, Southampton and the promoted sides thus far. As many teams look to keep it tight at the back, there’s stronger potential for clean sheets on offer, thus enabling us to find budget and mid-price options for defensive returns. The Magpies will be hoping Siem de Jong can makes an impact at home to Palace next weekend, while both Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle also offer hope for the Saints, but at the moment, it’s difficult to look beyond their defences as a source of potential returns.

We have to question the Palace rearguard…
Despite the encouraging opening day showing, conceding three to West Ham on home turf rings alarm bells and has to have us re-assessing the worth of the Eagles’ defensive assets. Palace managed 12 clean sheets in the final 28 Gameweeks of the previous campaign after parting company with Ian Holloway but the resilience instilled by Tony Pulis seems to have quickly ebbed away – unless they can sort themselves out, more owners will be seeking alternatives sooner rather than later.

Swansea’s 4-5-1 isn’t helping Bony’s pitch time…
Hooked off just after the hour mark at home to Burnley, with Bafetimbi Gomis available as an option, Wilfried Bony owners seem unlikely to get 90 minutes from their man right now. It may well be that the Ivorian is still lacking in match sharpness after a late return to training following World Cup duties but, with Garry Monk determined to retain a lone striker system after a brief flirtation with 4-4-2 proved disastrous in the summer, the current situation merely compounds the value offered by Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Swans midfield.

We can add Chadli to the mid-price midfield chocolate box…
While a price of 5.5-6.0 won’t buy too many assurances (Sigurdsson aside, it seems), there’s a whole cast of options making themselves known in that bracket that warrant at least a passing glance. Nacer Chadli added his name to that list with an unlikely brace for Spurs as the Mauricio Pochettino effect quickly takes hold in the Tottenham attack. The Argentine transformed the Fantasy fortunes of Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez at Southampton last season and his impact also brings Erik Lamela into contention in the mid-price bracket – a 4-0 win over QPR was accomplished without a goal or assist for Christian Eriksen, suggesting the Dane has real competition as the best route into the north London club’s flourishing midfield.

It’s folly to write Mata off…
United may be struggling for any semblance of consistency under Louis van Gaal but the little Spaniard is still managing to pick up the points. Sold by almost 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers after failing to make an impact in the season opener at home to Swansea, Mata struck his seventh goal in the previous eight league matches for the Red Devils – a superb strike rate that highlights his capabilities from a central role. With the fixtures still firmly in his favour, that 19% ownership will surely rise again if he can maintain his current form, though it remains to be seen whether the imminent arrival of Angel di Maria will force a change in formation from the new man in charge.

Zarate could be the spark the Hammers require…
Benched for the season opener at home to Spurs as Sam Allardyce opted for Carlton Cole up front, the little Argentine’s first start proved instrumental for the West Ham last weekend. With Kevin Nolan sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained in training, Zarate tucked in behind Cole in the attacking midfield three and grabbed his chance with both hands, inspiring Allardyce’s side to a 3-1 win at Palace – Nolan is expected to be out for six weeks but may find it difficult to retain his starting position if the South American can push on from his weekend showing.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

eh, its a known risk. the guy undoubtedly has the potential to be one of the worlds very best and he's coming into a good environment. if he settles down and the management team put him straight like they did with suarez and sterling, then it could be the signing of the summer.

the Milan fans i've spoken to say he matured a helluva lot in his time there. He's also just settled down with his missus. I think with Rodgers it will be very interesting to see how he performs, he comes across as a very good man-manager of people who are of this type, comsidering what he did with sterling, suarez, even sturridge.

Bojan dropping, looks like he'll be rotated a bit. Caulker also dropping, may have a goal threat but QPR looking dire. Seems I need to shift those two on today (should've stuck to my pre-season plan with Sigurdsson, Vlaar and a 4.5m forward!).

            With 2 FTs to use,

            Option A:
Bojan and Caulker out. PVA and Jelavic in (PVA to rotate, Jelavic to start each week). Straight swaps with no hit.

            Option B: 4pt hit
Bojan, Caulker and Marney out. Sigurdsson, Dummet and Vaz Te in (Sig to start each week, Dummet to rotate, Vaz Te to bench-warm).

A seems the most sensible, a straight swap to maintain my TV without losing points. It means continuing without Sigurdsson, who'll likely rise further, but I feel at this point I'd be doing more harm trying to force him in. Think I needed him from the start really, which I stupidly moved away from to take the Bojan punt.

Also got Chambers I need to shift soon but he's not dropping tonight and can easily be changed for another 4.5 def before he does drop, plus may still play against Leicester.

Hi all. I was just wondering if any of you know how the 'Best Leagues' scores are calculated on the FPL homepage? An average of the top 5 teams?

It's the average of the top players in each league. I don't know how many of the top players are sampled.p though, let's say 100 for example.

Last year with Chelsea it was easy, we had Hazard and Oscar to choose from and then Oscar faded away, so Hazard was the man to go for.

This year we have Hazard, Costa and Fábregas, of which none will fade away.

Will see how Jovetic goes tonight.

If its looking dodgy for him.. will need to make a switch or two for sure..

Downgrading Cahill or DDG are options..
                Cahill has been good tho.
                DDG has good fixtures..

I think Balotelli is overrated due to his big personality / antics.

His PL record was 20 in 54 playing for a top team - not bad but not great and this included some penalties which he is unlikely to have now.

Aye. Don't get me wrong, he's grand and certainly can score some crackers but in the space of 2 weeks it went from "He's not coming to LFC, not a chance would they buy him" to "He's the messiah of football, the product of Maradona and Pelé having a baby".

He will score them a couple of crackers and people will talk about how he's one of the best in the world, but in the end, it will be 5-8 goals all season, and nothing else. He will not give the team anything else. Well, some off field trouble maybe, and a couple of red cards, but that's it.

Exactly. 7 years in top flight football and he's yet to look any different really. Talent is there certainly but he's not some thoroughbred, future Messi that just needs the right manager to read him a bed time story and tuck him in. Simply because he scores the occasional cracker doesn't mean he has it in him to score them weekly, it just means that occasionally he gets a really nice shot off.

That might also be because he tries them so much.

His conversion rate: 9%, with penalties. That's worst in the European top leagues, amongst players who have scored 10 or more goals in two season's length.

That's a lot of long shots though, most going to row Z. how about inside the box? 14%, again with penalties. Looks good, until you compare: Giroud 17.8%, Dzeko 17.8%, Lambert 1.85%, Lukaku 22.8%, Studge 26.4%, Gervinho (in Serie A) 16.2%.

How about without penalties? From open play it's just 6%. That's so bad I can't even compare it.

He is more mature and will flourish at Liverpool IMO.

Gary Medel, a good player who was relegated with Cardiff last season has now signed for Inter Milan.

So is it a case of a player that deserved to be at a better team than Cardiff, that the Italian leagues are still declining or, most likely, a bit of both?

Not debating that at all, he's much too good for Cardiff.

No, he's a good player. Was surrounded by crap at Cardiff though, theres only so much one man can do.

I fear my point has been lost.

What I'm saying is, is this a case of a player that is far too good for Cardiff but traditionally wouldn't have been a player Inter would have signed before Serie A started to decline?

First case imo, deserved a better team...look at how many (present or former) Wigan players were at the World Cup

Deserved a better team. I just mean if the Italian leagues were what they used to be would Inter have signed him? Similar to the likes of AC Milan signing Taarabt if you catch my drift (though Medel is much better than him.)

Aaah, I see what you mean, but sometimes quality players might have to start out at lower sides before they get into a big team, like when Cahill was at Bolton. All in all the Italian leagues are declining, incredible that 'powerhouse' Milan had a midfield of Taarabt, Muntari, De Jong etc (PL flops) last season!!

Maybe a bit of both. Although Inter Milan aren't the Inter of old relative to Serie A anyway.

Juventus and Roma still have top quality players.

Pirlo, Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio, Chiellini, Barzaglhi, Tevez, Totti, De Rossi, Benatia, Strootman... gervinho. 😉

Italian Leagues falling off a cliff. Declining isn't in it.

This is my point really, seems folks have missed it. He's much too good for Cardiff but I don't believe he would have been a top target for Inter if the Italian leagues were still in their glory days.

Think Coutinho, especially if they go diamond. Lallana was already gonna be a rotation player before his arrrival imo

Need to do something about my 4th mid spot
            Krulliott
            Terry Debuchy Caulker Hutton Chester
            Siggy Eriksen Ramsey Albrighton DAVIS
            Sturridge Rooney Costa
            1 million in bank

Got 3 ways of doing it
            A) Downgrade defense(Terry/Debuchy) and upgrade Davis to DeJong/Tadic/Lamela(depending on how much i downgrade)
            B) Downgrade Sturridge to Adebayor/8.5 and upgrade Davis to Sterling
            C) Downgrade nowhere and just swap Davis for Larsson/Henderson/6 million mid

I guess the die was cast when you went for a strong defence. Get the scalpel out. You've got 3 bug hitting strikers though so you are better positioned than most.

Think many is taking that road this week, I already have him but saw everton is in for a move for Eto so that may couse some problems and also Naismith has Chelsea for gw3 and generely not a good bunch of fixtures in the next 5 with Chelsea-LFC and man utd. not sure what to do really

strongly considering. I wouldn't be if Bojan wasn't close to dropping as he has great fixtures. Also be nice to have 2FT post-transfer window closing.

A 0.2 TV swing, possibly 0.3 TV is very tempting though.

I have Fab and Costa. Fab definitely staying there.

Not sure about Costa, wondering whether Costa or Hazard more essential? Costa not lighting up the premier league with his play but he does what he is supposed to do, poaches goals.

Nah, doesn't look that way seeing totalfpl. His overall play was very average bar the goal.

Decent player in a very poor team.
