As an exciting transfer window closes and the first international break begins, we take a look ahead and try to gauge the impact of the upcoming schedule on our Fantasy thinking. First up, as always, are the teams with favourable fixtures to come over the next four to six Gameweeks – we see a couple of title hopefuls and a spread of lesser ranked teams are offered platforms for short-term success.

Stoke City

“involvement

A shock 1-0 win at the Etihad was just the tonic that Mark Hughes’ team needed after a sluggish start to the season. Buoyed by that result, the Potters enter a period of excellent fixtures with home encounters against Leicester, Newcastle and Swansea and trips to QPR, Sunderland and Southampton. After getting their act together at arguably the toughest ground in the top-flight, these fixtures suggest that there could be Fantasy points aplenty on offer at both ends of the pitch.

Asmir Begovic is firmly ensconced in goal and provides good value in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game at 5.0, while at the back, managers can choose between the budget delights of Marc Wilson, the added assist threat of Erik Pieters or the full luxury of goals and bonus points from Ryan Shawcross. In midfield, one-time Fantasy darling Victor Moses will be hoping to reboot his Premier League career while Liverpool alumnus Oussama Assaidi was signed on deadline day after a fairly successful loan last season.

Marko Arnautovic, widely expected to kick on after settling in during the latter half of last season, was unexpectedly benched last time out and has a fight on his hands to regain his place, though the potentially season-ending injury to Peter Odemwingie won’t harm his cause. Up front, there’s a parallel story as Bojan Krkic was left out of the squad against City and any investment in that area would surely be in the direction of weekend goalscorer Mame Biram Diouf.

Man United

“involvement

Louis van Gaal’s winless start to the Premier League rolls on, with a lacklustre draw against Burnley the latest in a series of unconvincing displays. However, a huge transfer window culminated in the loan of Radamel Falcao, whose legendary goal-scoring pedigree is thought by many to signal the start of an upturn. Certainly, on paper, the new-look squad of world-class talent ought to make light work of their upcoming five fixtures, with home games against QPR, West Ham and Everton and trips to Leicester and West Brom.

For those with faith in the Reds defence, David De Gea provides a well priced route in, while Jonny Evans is expected to keep his place and comes in at 5.4 in the FPL game. The arrival of both Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao has caused some to doubt the security of Juan Mata’s place in the first team – the former arrives at Old Trafford with an outstanding history of playmaking on the continent but question marks over formation may mean that it may be better to wait and see how things shake out before investing in the Argentine. Falcao, on the other hand, has no such question marks. Priced at 11.0 in the FPL game, the Colombian is an elite option whose arrival could trigger a raft of wildcards as Fantasy managers scramble to accommodate such an expensive option alongside other pricey performers. Quite how Van Gaal shapes his side to also accommodate Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie remains to be seen.

Sunderland

“involvement

Two draws and a loss from their opening three tells a fair tale of the Black Cats’ stuttering start to the season. Gus Poyet will be desperate to improve and the next four fixtures offer some assistance – after the tricky visit of Tottenham, the Wearsiders have a trip to Burnley followed by two home fixtures against Swansea and Stoke, which offer hope of points at both ends of the pitch.

In goal, last year’s budget hero Vito Mannone appears to have seen off the challenge of Costel Pantilimon and offers excellent value. The loan of Sebastien Coates could threaten Wes Brown’s place or even that of John O’Shea, but luckily the most appealing option here is Patrick van Aanholt, who already has an assist to his name.

The midfield offers a wide selection of budget gambles. Seb Larsson opened his account in Gameweek 1 and followed up with an assist the following week to remind us of his well priced potential. Jack Rodwell is looking for a fresh start on Wearside and has already scored, whilst, sadly, hopes for Will Buckley seem to be curtailed for now by irregular game time. Connor Wickham has been utilised on the flank so far but the arrival of Buckley and Ricardo Alvarez may see the youngster challenge Steven Fletcher for the lone forward role.

Liverpool

“involvement

After struggling to dominate Southampton or make an impression against Man City, Brendan Rodgers’ side rediscovered their form with a highly convincing destruction of previously unbeaten Tottenham at the Lane. That 3-0 triumph set Liverpool up perfectly for a very encouraging schedule – Aston Villa, West Brom, Everton and Hull City all roll up to Anfield in the next six Gameweeks, while trips to West Ham and QPR will hold little fear.

A back-line that struggled to keep clean sheets last season seemed to have been sounding the same chord this term but shutting out a Pochettino side at home is no mean feat and Simon Mignolet could be a decent goalkeeping option in light of these fixtures. A goal from new recruit Alberto Moreno makes him an enticing alternative to the hugely owned Dejan Lovren, though if the cheaper youngster Javier Manquillo can nail down a berth ahead of Glen Johnson and Jon Flanagan, he could be a bargain. In midfield, it’s hard to look past Raheem Sterling whose two goals and assist have taken him to third in the overall midfielder standings in FPL. But those who thought that the departure of Luis Suarez would rob Steven Gerrard of the oxygen of penalties may be thinking twice after Rodgers’ high-intensity methods earned his skipper another spot-kick at the weekend, meaning the veteran may still be an option. With two assists in three appearances, Jordan Henderson is also ticking over nicely, and at just 6.0, offers an alternative in the mid-price bracket.

Up front, Mario Balotelli was lively without product but still looked like a potentially explosive goal-scorer – if Rodgers retains the midfield diamond, the Italian international looks a valid option as part of the front two. Meanwhile Daniel Sturridge’s second consecutive blank is a little disconcerting for his owners but few would predict that the drought will abide for long and the only real deterrent is his eye-watering price-tag – all the more so with Balotelli 1.5 cheaper.

Also Consider

Crystal Palace
The loss of Tony Pulis is still being felt by Fantasy managers but Neil Warnock is a canny old campaigner and a shift from budget-priced defence to budget-priced attack could be on the cards after the Eagles put three past Newcastle.

With home matches against Burnley and Leicester plus trips to Hull and West Brom in the next six Gameweeks, Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha look like enticing options, whilst Dwight Gayle is expected to recover from the ankle knock that forced him off last weekend – the striker has scored four goals in his last two matches in all competitions and, at 4.5 in the FPL game, could be an excellent budget enabler in a 3-5-2 formation. For those still holding out hope of clean sheets, Joel Ward still appears to be the best option, though with Zaki Fryers arriving yesterday, in addition to the competition offered by Martin Kelly and Adrian Mariappa on the right, the Eagles first-choice backline under Warnock is yet to be decided.

Burnley
Sean Dyche will gladly chalk up a no-score draw with Man United as a victory and he’ll be hoping to prise his plucky team from the bottom of the table using the lever of favourable fixtures. Sunderland, West Ham and Everton all roll up to Turf Moor, while trips to Crystal Palace, West Brom and Leicester present a landscape of points potential for their key Fantasy assets. Michael Duff looks a bargain at 4.0 if he can hold onto his place, whilst Dean Marney is the budget fifth midfielder of choice for many on the site, though George Boyd (4.4) could prove an alternative if he can nail down the left flank role. Lukas Jutkiewicz excelled in pre-season but Danny Ings, with 27 goals last season, has better underlying stats and could easily break his drought with those fixtures.

Southampton
A first win of the season at West Ham was no more than the Saints deserved after impressing under Ronald Koeman, given the exodus of talent over the summer. The next six fixtures offer hope of more to come as Koeman gets to grips with the Premier League: the visits of Newcastle, QPR, Sunderland and Stoke all look primed for Fantasy points, though trips to in-form Swansea and Tottenham under their former manager may be more problematic.

Fraser Forster has done well for save points so far, though for a similar price one can obtain the attack-minded services of Nathaniel Clyne, who with a goal, assist and clean sheet so far sits in fourth place for defenders overall. Morgan Schneiderlin’s brace makes him an intriguing lower mid-price option whilst James Ward-Prowse also got off the mark with an assist. Dusan Tadic has thus far failed to justify his price-tag, but a mooted shift to a role in the hole could be hugely beneficial to him and his owners. Graziano Pelle has similarly got off to a fairly slow start but his goal against West Ham could be just what his confidence needs to begin repaying his managers’ faith. New winger Sadio Mane arrives with an excellent scoring record and is another to monitor.

I posted this in the middle of transfer window deadline day when peoples interests laid elsewhere so I thought I'd do a repost now to get some more views on the matter as I just can't make my mind up:

So I have the funds to do Debuchy->Ivanovic, but am really leaning more towards Moreno. Please talk me out of this crazy idea!

Here's my reasoning: Chelsea have so far played bur (3-1), LEI (3-0) and eve (6-3). That's 1 CS and 4 goals conceded against pretty soft competition to be honest. Liverpool have played SOU (2-1), mci (1-3) and tot (3-0). 1 CS and 4 goals conceded against 3 in form teams of pretty high caliber.
Chelseas next 4 are: SWA, mci, AVL, ARS. Swansea is THE in-form team atm and while I think Chelsea will win at the bridge I could very well see Swansea scoring as they have in every match before this (2,33 goals/game). City away is one of the toughest games of the season for Chelsea. AVL is of course a great fixture. Arsenal at home is kind of like the Swansea game, expect Chelsea to win comfortably, but I would not be very surprised to see an Arsenal goal in there somewhere.
The main concern though is that I feel like Mourinho will play much more defensively against these tougher teams to not be punished on the break, and so far offense has been Ivanovics strongest weapon. Of course he will still be threatening on corners and with Costa in the middle his crosses will be deadly, but I still expect his PPG to decrease a lot now.
Liverpool on the other hand are set up for some favourable fixtures, their next 4 are: AVL, whu, EVE, WBA (with qpr, HUL, new to follow that).
Liverpool are known to be shaky at the back, but this year half or more of their backline has been upgraded, they should only get stronger the better they gel together. And with the diamond formation back in action, it falls upon the full-backs to go forward out wide, something Moreno seems to like as he has looked very aggressive these last 2 games. In fact his PPG is not that far behind Ivanovics (7,5 to 9,5) over the two matches he has played and that was City away and Spurs away!
However Ivanovic will probably rise at least 0,2 over the international break so might be harder to get him in later (though if he only rises to 7,2 I'll still be able to afford him). On the other hand leaving those 3,2 mill in the bank could really come in handy when trying to be flexible in getting on those bandwagons and such. Or maybe I should just upgrade my 5th mid to Henderson or something.

So again: dissect my crazy theories and bring me back to my senses please!! 😀

TL;DR: Moreno vs Ivanovic. Form and fixtures. Mourinho playing more defensively against stronger opposition and Moreno attacking in diamond formation.

I would try and get both but maybe Ivan first.

Ivan proven and Chelsea has reputation for being solid at the back. Moreno looks keen to get forward, Liverpool defence still gelling, Lovren making massive difference over emd of last season. Not convinced on Sakho pairing yet.

plus if Ivan gets injured, you can get anyone.

The starting clean sheet % is around 35 and towards the end of the season around 42%. Therefore the start of the season only gets better as it goes on... something to consider.

Those are the stats from last season.

Torres suffered the dip in form AFTER the injury – the injury being the reason for his loss of form.

Falcao was off form BEFORE his injury which is something which happens too all players even Messi and Ronaldo.

      Class is permanent

The bigger issue for me is that the majority of his goals come from the penalty spot and its unlikely he will be on pens at Man U.

Why wouldn't he be - Rooney doesn't have that great a pen record really. If RVP can have pens over him, then why not Falcao?

Not saying he wont but as it stands he is probably 3rd in the list behind RVP and Rooney. Of course if he does get pens then that's great news for us but if he doesn't then he's previous scoring record goes from great to good IMO

    Begovic (Myhill)

    Cahill/Dummet/Debuchy/Chester/Clyne
    Siggy/Eriksen/Ramsey/Sterling/Marney
    Costa/Rooney/Fletcher

    0 FT. 2.4 ITB

Should I WC? Need a better striker. Or should I play 4-4-2 this GW and take a couple of hits to get in a better striker next GW. Thanks.

Which is the bigger priority to bring in this week?

    Sterling or Falcao?

Head says Sterling since he is on form, nailed on to start and has PL experience.

However, AVL have only conceded 1 goal in 3 games this season so it may not be the pasting that many are predicting. And then it's WHU away next for pool, and BFS will inevitably park his bus.

United on the other hand have QPR (shipped 4 against Spurs, and looked a shambles in a 3-5-2) so I think the ceiling is higher there for a big win.

your reasoning is sound, but i'd still go with sterling for now. the odds are that you will want both at some point, but right now sterling is on fire, will increase in price, and the things you mention above. getting him first will also allow you to see how falcao fits in and if he is in fact as important of a transfer as you think. falcao's price won't change this week anyways

Falcao will either need time to settle or explode in the BPL. The team around him isn't gelled yet and he doesn't know the league.

Sterling is on form, confident, knows the league and with Balotelli holding the ball up will make more runs through the channel.as well as taking defenders on.

sterling for now, monitor and plan you way to get Falcao later. that's want I'm doing

Isn't it a bit strange that Zaha is predicted to outscore Puncheon in the RMT tool?

I thought Puncheon was far more secure of starts, and his record is also superior.

International week is so dull. Now that transfer window fun is over am i right in saying topics on the go now are?

    A. Starting a 3-5-2 vs a 3-4-3? Coming down on the side of 352. Naismith gives us a 'playing bench' player vs a 'dont want him to play bench player'. Sort of Marney and Ade vs Naismith and Sterling.

    B. Man U formation and effects on players. No idea personally especially now RVP says he is fit. Must be a deeper role for Mata/ some bench time though?

    C. Falcao. Obviously a world class player. Bring him in ow? Understand totally why you would especially on wildcard. Wait for me. Too much else to do but Rooney to Falcao switch definitely on my mind

    D. Welbeck. Interesting. Will surely start until Xmas, Sanogos displays were poor. A nice price for an Arsenal striker. Costa, Falcao, Welbeck up top later would be nice.

    E. Prices change sites are still drunk. Less rises. avoiding price drops vital as doubles rises less likely.

    F. Hull mid is a minefield but potential, new SOT winger has good stats, Negredo leaving, does this benefit Dzeko? i kind of paired Dzeko with Negredo and Aguero with Jotevic in my mind when looking at MC starts. Pelle, Tadic and Miralles getting some love

    G. What else is happening?

    H. Can you tell im bored at work?

      A. I'm becoming more convinced by Naismith and the idea of withdrawing cash from midfield. Currently considering attacking rotation options that involve starting Naismith on occasion.

This week is the kind of dilemma i dont like. Naismith is my 'bench' but Siggy away to Chelsea. Most times Naismith will be on the bench, rotation and rest will hit later with Champs League so one of the 5 mids could easily mis out some weeks

I'm considering only going with 2 big hitting mids and 2 big hitting strikers. This means I could end up with Ivanovic and Baines as well as DDG. Its a bit nuts perhaps but a rotating a couple of mids with Naismith isn't the worst idea.

      E. Starting to ignore the price change sites, I'm freaking out every day thinking Young will drop again, then he doesn't. Might as well wait till after the internationals to see if any of my players gets injured.

      F. Loads of uncertainty with new signings yet to be integrated. Its probably better to wait till the dust settles. Difficult fixtures for some makes it an easy call.

Is this worth a 4 point hit?

Chambers, Mata, Rooney --> Moreno, Miralles, Falcao

0.0 itb so I can't wait a week on Rooney to falcao with Rooney about to drop. Rest of the team bellow (pre transfers)

    Krul | Gilks
    Chambers | Kaboul | Clyne | Ferdinand | Taylor
    Mata | Ramsey | Hazard | Siggy | Sterling
    Rooney | Costa | Zamora

    1. cramps

chambers to moreno is an upgrade, but the two other transfers could be a bit sideways. it's not given that mirallas and falcao will outscore mata and rooney this week

      1. Aussie_Toon_Lad
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

Mata to Miralles funds chambers to Moreno and is free but only leaves 0.5 itb and with Rooney dropping and falcao rising I feel like if I don't do it for a hit this week I'll have to take a hit to do it next week anyway

        1. cramps

falcao shouldn't increas this week. his price won't change until next week, i believe. rooney is a different story. i still think it's wiser to wait and see. rooney could very well be among the points and falcao start on the bench and then the -4 isn't worth it at all. i am all for being patient this year. your team looks solid elsewhere, so even if rooney blanks i cannot see you having a horrible gameweek

Thanks mate I'm not a fan of taking hits unless I have to. How about I get manquillo instead of Moreno and this gives me a chance to look at falcao without worrying about Rooney dropping? Is he nailed?

same here. people seem to forget that hits equal a goal from a striker, although a boring way to "gain" four points.

i couldn't say about manquillo. haven't seen him play, but with injury on johnson he should be a starter.

Considering a 4 point hit to bring in Falcao. Will do Rooney -> Falcao but which of these transfers should be the second one to fund Falcao? (Only have 0.3 in bank).
    1) Cahill --> Azpilcueta
    2) Lamela --> Tadic

Here's the list of defence options and ownerships in FFS Scoutleague mods and contributors including winner Tom Fenley. Some data is definitely interesting; for example Terry being the most popular among the scouts, with 13 managers favors him. Most interesting however is only 3 managers (including Mark) has chosen Ivanovic over Terry. It's only GW3 of course, these templates might be different later on.

If you don't, you line up with Ivan (yes), Wizzy (poss benched), and Vlaar (prob ship 6 goals) with Bruce and Dummy non-players. If you take a hit now you can switch another defender in GW5 (maybe bring in Moore as a playing 4m def with good fixtures)

Some Mirallas love starting to show up after dismissal earlier in the week.

    - Already 11 shots in 184 minutes so far with some good attacking fixtures coming up with WBA, Palace, Liverpool, Man United, Villa, Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland, West Ham, Hull x2, QPR, Southampton, Stoke & Newcastle as 15 of their next 16! 😆

    - Only 7.4 and managed good points last 2 seasons when playing

    But, is he nailed on?

No he's not nailed on...but he's much better whilst Barkley's out. Good pick.

wba away is just the type of game he will be rested for too.

What are your thoughts on this folks...Always got my eye on the player/s who top the "touches in the box" table for mids because they always come good...Will the top two run away from the pack (disappointing so far) or are we in for a tight season and they are a waste of funds ?http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4933/...Got both at the moment.

I think the top lot will come good soon enough. #8 is intriguing though, and well under the radar - 0.5% differential!

Worth noting that Zaha managed 7 in one sub appearance last week.

Wakey, imo, touches in the box are more or less irrelevant.

Depends how high they are Doosra...Hazard and Lallana miles ahead last year but they are left in Wally's wake when he's fit...Wally was on 24 for the first three weeks last year. This year is very low...hence the post...I can't see the value in that stat at all being so low....Take a peek at the stat for the last four years and you'll see the value in high numbers for it...

I have ... I stand by my comment. When Wally was at that stage, he was first in my table too ...

I fear that we need to see what they DO, not what they THREATEN.

A couple of phrases/ideas that grate on me slightly:

    Nailed on
Very very few players are genuinely "nailed on" to play every game these days with so many games to be played. Most of the squads in the premier league are huge and players will be rotated . Even the likes of Hull have options galore. The champions league teams will see more rotation than ever this season.

    Fixtures
For example I've seen people argue for a Southampton player over a city player on the basis of fixtures. I believe that fixtures should always be looked at in the context of the strength of the team. City will win the majority of the games they play against any opposition whereas the likes of Southampton, hull and Newcastle will have mixed results during their run of supposedly good fixtures.

    Coverage
I'm not even going to expand on this one too much. It's just a ridiculous concept. Pick the players who you think will score the most points.

"Nailed on" is really just clear first choice. Obviously 99% of players get a rest eventually.

Goalkeepers are nailed on, and in general CBs are too - ie the ones who don't run around too much. wingbacks and wingers need more rest, so altho they might be favoured in the new bap system, rotation needs to be considered.

But as said, "nailed on" doesn't mean guaranteed to play 30 league games; it means first choice subject to rotation.

      Nailed On

I think when people use this phrase it's moreso that the player is in the first 11 and, with the exception of protecting them for an upcoming tough game or schedule, his owners can expect him to play.

      Fixtures

City have a load more good fixtures than a team like Southampton, you're right, but that's why they're generally more expensive (9.0 for Silva and 7.5 for Tadic when they play virtually the same role) and when a lower team like Southampton ahs good fixtures and City have tough fixtures, then that strengthens the case for the cheaper player as he might be able to match Silva due to an easier match. So you can spend the 1.5 mill elsewhere.

      Coverage.

Absolute myth made up by those scared of picking the wrong player. Jovetic doesn't cover Aguero's points.

This game is all about recognising where the value is pretty much, and getting that value in at the right time, the people who come first in the world have all of their gambles pay off 😛

Coverage applies IMO when a strong team like Chelsea plays a weak one like qpr. More often then not a strong pick from Chelsea would be essential for this game. However this concept bit me on the arse the last game, when I felt the need for city coverage , and transferred in jovetic.

I put together a table today which shows the most threatening forwards sorted by shots inside the box, which is a key stat for forwards (only those forwards are included which have 5 or more shots inside the box)

Interesting to see that the 2nd option has gone under the radar, he's one I'm looking to get sooner rather than later
