Technical Area

All eyes were on White Hart Lane last Sunday as Liverpool rolled up to face Tottenham with new boy Mario Balotelli on board for the first time. After tasting defeat at City in their previous match, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to form in style, sweeping aside their previously unbeaten hosts with a 3-0 win which could easily have reaped further reward for the Reds’ Fantasy owners.

Balotelli may have failed to play a part in any of the Merseysiders’ three strikes, but after starting alongside Daniel Sturridge up front as Rodgers rolled out a midfield diamond, there’s hope he will retain his spot in the XI as the Reds brace themselves for a very kind run of fixtures.

involvement

As the average position map from the weekend encounter shows, Balotelli (number 45) found himself in possession in more withdrawn areas than strike partner Sturridge (number 15), with Raheem Sterling (number 13) almost on a par with the Italian at the tip of the midfield diamond.

Over his 61 minutes on the pitch, Balotelli produced a total of 38 touches, with 18 arriving in the final third. While this was fewer than Sturridge’s 26 and Sterling’s 23 in the attacking area, the new boy was just as involved overall as Sterling – an average of 1.6 minutes per touch equalled the youngster’s and was superior to Sturridge’s 2.6. The Liverpool players also sought out Balotelli at a quicker pace than his fellow forward – an average of 3.6 minutes per pass received was up on Sturridge’s 3.8 at the Lane.

When on the ball, the Italian international’s distribution left a lot to be desired, though. Balotelli made just eight successful passes over his time on the park – half the number of Sturridge (16) and also fewer than Sterling’s 11. A mere four accurate passes in the final third harbours back to the fact he produced just a single assist for City, though in a sense he can be forgiven, as this was his first match in Liverpool colours and he has yet to become accustomed to his team-mates. Indeed, an 80.6% pass accuracy for City in 2012/13 suggests he’ll soon improve upon a lowly 50% success rate.

In terms of goal threat, Balotelli registered some very impressive stats against Spurs. Despite playing 61 minutes to Sturridge’s 94, he registered double the number of touches in the box (four to two) and equalled his fellow forward’s five attempts on goal.

Crucially, though, four of Balotelli’s attempts arrived inside the area – essentially, he fired an effort with every touch in the penalty box – while Sturridge managed just two close-range attempts in their first appearance as a partnership. Sterling’s three efforts inside the box took his total to six close-range shots for the season – more than any other midfielder – and underlines just why many feel he’s near essential for the upcoming schedule.

Even when it came to work-rate, there was promise. After the match, Brendan Rodgers suggested that handing Balotelli more responsibility will bring out his best performances and, encouragingly for the Reds boss, the new signing challenged for four aerial duels – more than any other Liverpool player at the Lane and significantly up on his average of 1.7 in his final season at the Etihad. Defensively, his four recoveries and three clearances were also way better than his City 2012/13 stats (1.4 and 0.4 respectively) and also hints that he may well be prepared to buy into the Merseysiders’ team ethic; certainly, the numbers back up the fact that – as many onlookers noted – there was no standing around or posturing as the play went on around him.

Granted, 61 minutes is far from enough of a sample size to make any assumptions but Balotelli’s first match in a Reds shirt was encouraging both from a Liverpool and Fantasy perspective. At 10.0 to Sturridge’s 11.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, though, there was certainly enough on offer from the new boy to indicate he may well be capable of rivalling his team-mate for both goals and our Fantasy affections over the upcoming run of fixtures.

Does it make sense to do:

Mata ==> DiMaria for -4 if I captain him

(I am already on -4 because of Rooney==>Falcao and Sanchez==>Sterling)

I believe that makes sense because Mata has been extremely poor despite scoring that 1 goal he has not played well at all but the thing is we do not know yet if he will be benched or will he continue to play to rediscover his form but after yesterdays international performance Di Maria looks like a really good assist machine with the occasional goal so yeahh go for it!

    Hey Guys currently I have

Debuchy, David Silva and Rooney in my team but I am considering swapping these three for

Clyne, Sterling and Falcao what do you lot reckon? Should I play my Wildcard for these three transfers?

Last year was the first in 4 years that I kept my WC for DGW in May and was able to get approx. 40+ points on my ML leader who had played it early.

I believe that even at -12 a WC should not be played. Of course I would only do -12 once the whole season if necessary. At -8, never WC.

      That's how I play.

Don't wildcard for just 3 changes if the rest of your team is okay

Make the changes gradually, starting with Silva to Sterling

Depends on the rest of your team. Clyne & Sterling I would do for -4 and wait with Rooney to Falcao untill after next game. Still a questionmark where Rooney will play and with free kicks and Pens in his locker might outscore Falcao any day.

Clyne and Sterling have really favorable fixtures as well so I might make these two and with all of these media reports it's really hard to keep Rooney in my dreamteam as he is being singled out by pretty much the world that he should be benched or moved but then again will LVG really bench/move his captain but your right I will keep Rooney for a while thanks (Y)

    A) 3-4-3 with
Ramsey / Siggy / Sterling / Fabs (King)
    Naismith/Welbz / Rooney/Falcao / Costa

    B) 3-5-2 with
    Ramsey / Siggy / Sterling / Fabs / Tadic
    Rooney/Falcao / Costa (Jutkiewicz)

Defenders are: Cahill / Clyne / PVA / Wisdom / Moore

Thoughts on this aggressive non-template (ish) wildcard team?

    Begovic

    Moreno / Ivanovic / Wilson

Sterling / Di Maria / Seb Larsson / Sigurdsson

Naismith / Diego Costa / Falcao

    Bench: Fabianksi / N. Dyer / M. Duff / Hutton

Planing on swapping Naismith for Wellbeck in a couple of weeks.

It really depends on your front 3

I have Fabregas and those 3 already but if I was starting from now I'd be tempted to go for Di Maria. If you have a United forward though go with Fabregas, still think it's too early to be doubling up on United attack

Costa (but only just) because all attacks go though him as Chelsea play 1 forward.

          Costa for now

City have some really tough games ahead both at home and in Europe, no guarantee for game time. I'm also not convinced he is 100% fit yet so Costa is the cheaper and safer options for now

        Stuck on last post :/

I know from the World Cup that Blind is super versatile. But what is his best position and where will LVG most likely play him?
From watching the World Cup, I felt he played best on the left wing.

I imagine he will be playing in defensive midfield when everyone is fit. Right now it's whether Fletcher or Young has been worse, I think he will replace Fletcher.

He will sit in front of the defence. We'll play a 3 man midfield with him in the middle, di maria on the left and Herrera (if fit) on the right

in terms of finishing he was poor but elsewhere i was pretty impressed by balotelli's debut. he has the body to pull out wide and put more of a shift in in general so if rodgers can get the mind to accept it he's on to a winner

        WC Team Yay or nay?

        Foster / Krul

        Wilson / Colo / PvA / Wisdom / Duff

Di Maria / Sterling / Fab / Ram / Boyd

        Falcao / Costa / Welbs

Haven't put a whole lot of thought into it so I should prob not pull the trigger right away.

Too much money spent on United players I think. No point getting ADM and Falcao considering how poor United have been so far. Downgrade one and upgrade the defense.

Di Maria and Falcao will blitz United into action against QPR. I shook my magic 8 ball and all signs say yes! I have Mata & Rooney but looking to avoid price drops.

        C) Mata ---> Sterling

Ha, nobody will be able to afford that surely. I read an interesting piece on Falcao that says without pens, he should have the same sort of impact as Negredo or Soldado based on previous years' stats, so I'd definitely hold for now!

so with my 2 FTs I want to do Mata and Rooney to Sterling and Falcao and i have 0.9 already banked, but I reckon Rooney and Mata will fall and Falcao may rise once so

        a) Hold firm and wait for pressers
