All eyes were on White Hart Lane last Sunday as Liverpool rolled up to face Tottenham with new boy Mario Balotelli on board for the first time. After tasting defeat at City in their previous match, Brendan Rodgers’ side returned to form in style, sweeping aside their previously unbeaten hosts with a 3-0 win which could easily have reaped further reward for the Reds’ Fantasy owners.

Balotelli may have failed to play a part in any of the Merseysiders’ three strikes, but after starting alongside Daniel Sturridge up front as Rodgers rolled out a midfield diamond, there’s hope he will retain his spot in the XI as the Reds brace themselves for a very kind run of fixtures.

involvement

As the average position map from the weekend encounter shows, Balotelli (number 45) found himself in possession in more withdrawn areas than strike partner Sturridge (number 15), with Raheem Sterling (number 13) almost on a par with the Italian at the tip of the midfield diamond.

Over his 61 minutes on the pitch, Balotelli produced a total of 38 touches, with 18 arriving in the final third. While this was fewer than Sturridge’s 26 and Sterling’s 23 in the attacking area, the new boy was just as involved overall as Sterling – an average of 1.6 minutes per touch equalled the youngster’s and was superior to Sturridge’s 2.6. The Liverpool players also sought out Balotelli at a quicker pace than his fellow forward – an average of 3.6 minutes per pass received was up on Sturridge’s 3.8 at the Lane.

When on the ball, the Italian international’s distribution left a lot to be desired, though. Balotelli made just eight successful passes over his time on the park – half the number of Sturridge (16) and also fewer than Sterling’s 11. A mere four accurate passes in the final third harbours back to the fact he produced just a single assist for City, though in a sense he can be forgiven, as this was his first match in Liverpool colours and he has yet to become accustomed to his team-mates. Indeed, an 80.6% pass accuracy for City in 2012/13 suggests he’ll soon improve upon a lowly 50% success rate.

In terms of goal threat, Balotelli registered some very impressive stats against Spurs. Despite playing 61 minutes to Sturridge’s 94, he registered double the number of touches in the box (four to two) and equalled his fellow forward’s five attempts on goal.

Crucially, though, four of Balotelli’s attempts arrived inside the area – essentially, he fired an effort with every touch in the penalty box – while Sturridge managed just two close-range attempts in their first appearance as a partnership. Sterling’s three efforts inside the box took his total to six close-range shots for the season – more than any other midfielder – and underlines just why many feel he’s near essential for the upcoming schedule.

Even when it came to work-rate, there was promise. After the match, Brendan Rodgers suggested that handing Balotelli more responsibility will bring out his best performances and, encouragingly for the Reds boss, the new signing challenged for four aerial duels – more than any other Liverpool player at the Lane and significantly up on his average of 1.7 in his final season at the Etihad. Defensively, his four recoveries and three clearances were also way better than his City 2012/13 stats (1.4 and 0.4 respectively) and also hints that he may well be prepared to buy into the Merseysiders’ team ethic; certainly, the numbers back up the fact that – as many onlookers noted – there was no standing around or posturing as the play went on around him.

Granted, 61 minutes is far from enough of a sample size to make any assumptions but Balotelli’s first match in a Reds shirt was encouraging both from a Liverpool and Fantasy perspective. At 10.0 to Sturridge’s 11.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, though, there was certainly enough on offer from the new boy to indicate he may well be capable of rivalling his team-mate for both goals and our Fantasy affections over the upcoming run of fixtures.

    Ramsey ->

    A) Mirallas
    B) Tadic

    Keeping is not an option.

Both are good choices. Tadic played really well and was a bit unfortunate not to score more points. Mirallas will be a bit rotation prone due to Europa matches. Go with your gut. Both can be good value for next 6-8 gw

Why not? I'm on WC and will probably go with 3-5-2 with Naismith/Welbz as third forward and rotate between 3-5-2 and 3-4-3

this is always a problem with mirallas. he's brilliant one week, completely the opposite next. really annoyed me last season. throw in a sub appearance once every few weeks, don't know how fit pienaar is though.

It is a moving image, so as I look at it every week, and therefore get a feel for what's hot, and what's not.

Also, I am not at all sure that Tadic has caught up with the premiership yet.

Finally, Everton are playing in such a way right now, that lends itself to Mirallas' peculiar set of skills.

The 50 will be the ones that they consider to be in most danger of going down.

They probably realise it is more likely that only say 20 will actually go down, but they don't know which ones.

There is clearly a big margin of error in their predictions - it would be very helpful if they could state how wide this margin is for each player.

Do we think Soton double up defence is worth a try? Nice fixtures and they seemed solid at the back. They conceded 3 in 3, but 2 goals were against Pool away.

Thinking about Forster & Clyne combo

GK is on rotation policy and there is something that man forward dont offer me right now. DiMaria for his last night performance and hoping he continues with that. And aguero is gonna get all the assisted help from midfield to score just like last nights match against germany.(Thats my view of squad selection) Rodwell can be changed and diouf too. I've been thinking more on United's possible formation assuming everyone is fit, and my opinion is that we'll go for a back 4 with a diamond in midfield, and Evans may lose out (I hope so as I'd like Jones to be given a chance to establish himself at CB)

    DDG

    Rafa, Jones, Rojo, Shaw

    Blind

    Di Maria, Herrera

    Rooney

    RvP, Falcao

Until Shaw is back, Evans could come in with Rojo going to LB

Mata can always come in case of injuries with Fletcher, Carrick, Evans, Valencia, Young, Smalling, Wilson as back-up

again Carrick went backwards last season, we now have 2 players for his role, Blind for the defensive work and Herrara to move the ball

if we play 3 in midfield then Carrick may have a role

        correct

For the same reasons Jose didn't play him

when defending Rooney is far more likely to drop back and give an extra man in midfield than Mata is

Plus as captain, Rooney is basically nailed given what LvG has said about his captains

I was thinking this as well but LVG loves width. Also he doesn't seem to like Rafael.

It's the only way I can see that LvG can play all of Rooney, RvP, Falcao and Di Maria without using Di Maria as a wing-back

Blind has the energy and versatility to drop back and cover whichever full-back is going forward or to go to CB with Jones covering RB

          Alternative is a 4-2-3-1

          Same back 5
          Herrera, Blind
          Di Maria, Rooney, Januzaj/Mata
          Falcao

RVP dropped instead as he's been awful for a while now (WC included minus 2 games)

    Anyone regretting ising wildcard?

Im starting too. Looked like six of my players were going to drop. Not a single one has , not even Mata. And how many transfers does it suddenly take for Roonney to fall?

Last week players were falling really fast, now they seem to have slowed it right down. Im expecting a poor rank this season, the price aspect has ruined the game

I'm quite sure FPL are fiddling the prices.

Price change suits exceptional players like myself who can adapt to change. Not so good for you casuals.

Don't think it has ruined the game at all. It's just very different and still struggling to adapt and get used to it. The lack of information regarding price changes is making it very difficult to plan though.

If, as I've now been made aware, WC transfers don't affect price changes, then this is entirely logical. A lot of people playing Wildcards should, in theory, slow down the price changes - not speed it up as I'd originally thought. Turns out that the worst time to play the Wildcard for TV purposes is the week when everyone else is playing it. It might still be the best week to play it for those who need a drastic change of team, however.

Read FISO on it we have three issues. One, our initial threshold is a bit off and shows high variance, especially at lower level of ownership. Secondly, the flag values are certainly off, but that has been a problem in the past, so probably nothing new. The third is that multiple drops seem to take longer than previously and the threshold is not quite resetting quick enough.- also wildcards used this week so maybe not counted for thresholds

Rooney and Mata and the others will probably still drop eventually this gw. Fiso now has Mata very close and Rooney about halfway. (Not sure ow accurate they are.)

Would you change anything about my team for GW 4?

    Krul Mannone
    Wisdom Terry Taylor (Chester Moore)
Fabregas Ramsey Henderson Siggy ( Marney )
    Costa Rooney Sturridge

    2 FT and 0.1 ITB

Much appreciated if you could suggest ideas 🙂
