Manchester City yesterday announced the signing of Sergio Aguero from Athletico Madrid on a five-year contract. The 23 year old arrives at the Etihad Stadium in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £38m and is the club’s third foray into this summer’s transfer market, following the arrivals of Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic.

After months of speculation, in which the Argentine was strongly linked with both Juventus and Real Madrid, Roberto Mancini has finally got his man and Aguero’s addition will bring a true world-class talent to the Premier League next season.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Aguero promised:

My style has always been fight to the death for every ball and give 100 per cent in every game, concentrate to the maximum in everything I do, movement, running off the ball, winning the ball back and scoring goals. I’m not a player who can do everything but I have plenty to offer. I don’t think I’ll have too many problems settling into the team.

I think we are a team that in the future will be fighting every year to win major trophies. Let’s hope that it’s quite a few major trophies.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Aguero made his debut for Independiente at the tender age of 15 years and 35 days, breaking Diego Maradona’s record as the youngest player to take to the field in Argentina’s first division. Used sparingly in his first two campaigns, Aguero played just six times but gradually fought his way into the first-team and in total played 54 games over four seasons, scoring 23 goals and assisting 4.

In May 2006, Aguero then moved to Athletico Madrid for a fee believed to be around 23m Euros. Firmly established as a key member of the Athletico side, he missed just fifteen games during his five season stint in La Liga, playing 175 games, scoring 74 goals and assisting 29.

Last season saw Aguero break the 20-goal mark in Spain’s top division for the first time, as he finished third top scorer in La Liga; only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo found the net more often. Ironically, his 2 assists in 2010/11 were the lowest number of assists in any of his five campaigns at the Vicente Calderón, an indication that he’s more of a finisher than a real creative force. Aguero has also scored 16 goals and picked up 2 assists in 32 games for Argentina.

The Prospects

Much is dependant on the future of Carlos Tevez. Having missed out on a return to Brazil with former club Corinthians, Tevez has been linked with a move to Inter Milan- indeed, today’s papers reckon he’ll be gone before August is out. With Aguero now in place, it’s debatable as to whether Mancini would be prepared to hold onto a player whose presence may well have a negative effect on squad morale.

It’s impossible to tell if Aguero has been purchased as an immediate replacement for his countryman or if Mancini had initially visualised playing both in the same XI. Tevez, clearly, does not wish to stay in Manchester and with Aguero now on board, the City boss is in a position of strength- the new boy can easily replace Tevez up front in Mancini’s 4-2-3-1, meaning the club is no longer so dependant on their want-away star.

Aguero is also capable of playing out wide, behind a lone front man or as part of a front two and if Tevez stays, Aguero’s versatility may see him in a supporting role behind. Playing in the same XI as his compatriot could, however, even see the pair lessen each other’s appeal- Mancini is renowned for his defensive approach and there’s the very possible scenario of the duo sharing City’s goals equally, as opposed to last season where Tevez grabbed 20 of City’s 60 goals.

At present, the move raises more questions than it solves. It’s fairly certain that, in the long-term, Aguero will be the man to lead the line for City but for now, it demotes the likes of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko further down the pecking order and to the periphery of our Fantasy thinking. Tevez’s exit is the ideal scenario for Fantasy managers- Aguero has this afternoon been priced at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and should offer the same threat while being the more budget-friendly of the two.

With the club facing (SWA, WIG) in their first four game weeks, he’ll surely find his way into many a Fantasy team before the big kick-off a fortnight tomorrow. Aguero looks set to be a pivotal figure in City’s 2011/12 campaign and around 30 starts can be expected from the Argentine in what promises to be a sensational season ahead.

Transfers planned more than 1 week out fall apart quickly, in my experience. With those planned, you can't react to events ... or if you do, you can't make your transfers/will be taking hits if you do both.

    Hi Guys,

A quick RMT after some tweaking - would appreciate any feedback!

    Al-Habsi (Given)
Huges | Samba | Kompany (Jagielka, Simpson)
    Moses | O'Hara | Taarabt | Silva
    Zamora | Bent | Rooney

Left with 2.0 in the bank. I know I'm lacking Chelsea cover but since know one knows how they gonna line-up and not being willing to fork out 10+ for Malouda or Frank the Shank this will have to do for now..I might switch Rooney for Suarez if he does make the start of the season..and if Yossi might feature if Chelsea look like using him properly! Thanks!

A bloke in mini league last year that had Hart, Vidic, Evra, Terry, Ivan and Hangeland. He won the league wire to wire and stayed in the top 100 overall most of the year. Gives me a chuckle when I see a RMT critique that says "Spending too much on defence".

Did he have them all from the start?

The main point is that defenders generally make poor captaincy choices because an individual player is in less control of his points-destiny.

However, defence does clearly offer the best value for money.

I find it odd that people are saying they don't have attacking coverage for X top side.

    Given that
    a) All of them have players who can score against anyone
    b) Those players are very expensive
    c) We only have 3 stirker slots

It seems pretty obvious that no team is going to have Rooney, RVP, Drogba/Torres/Lampard/Malouda, Suarez/Carroll and Silva/Aguero/Tevez.

Just pick a good team and try not to worry about what you're missing out on.

Glen Johnson is on my radar. He does get up forward and put some balls into the box. With a dominant big man in the box could see a few more assists come his way. That said I would only get him if he Ayer on his natural right side, not LB that Kenny was playing around with h for a while.

Pairing Sess and Taarabt is bad planning...they rotate poorly.

Pairing Taarabt with Sinclair now you're talking.
Pairing Sess and Barton...well that's just lovely.

Also Tiote is going to bring you a whole heap of yellow cards. Best avoid defensive midfielders. He scored a great goal against Arsenal last year...but he's not going to do that each week.

Barton is a great shou out. With Nolan out I can see him take most free kicks, penalties and also a fair share of corners. If newc could get a decent striker he could be gold.

Bit arrogant! No team is perfect. Arteta get rid, Luiz may be rotated, not convinced Rafael won't be rotated, and Downing for that matter. Better options than A. Johnson

Haha I said that to get some replies, seems to work...Luiz and RAF seem worth the punt at this stage, I think Luiz nailed his spot at the end of last year and AVB would be familiar thru the portugese league. I can't see downing not performing, has a high rate of successful crosses plus putting them on carrolls head, good combo by the sounds of it.

Arteta is made of glass it would seem

Aguero is just too expensive just now and with the established Tevez uncertain about his future he may be played behind him.

I cant see N'Zogbia doing that well in a Villa team managed by McLeish

Been a big aguero fan for a few years now (thank you FIFA 07) so I'm gonna give him a shot.

I saw arteta is crook, so he's tentatively in my side. If he can find form this year, plus with the new bonus system he could be in for a good year. That said plenty of guys vying for his spot.

      Tha ms for the feedback.

Same, i want Dzeko to do well, seems like a likable guy. Finding it hard to choose an attacking City player. I look at Silva but then i think... for 0.5 more i could get VDV. Not sold on Yaya is very hit and miss.

only thing i can see is no obvious captain choice. vdv, malouda and aguero can all be thrown it if necessary but neither seems 'perfect' if that makes sense (e.g rvp, tevez, lampard, rooney)
other than that really like it. you can basically play kompany and baines every week so having 3 cheapies isn't such an issue as only one is needed

I rode te malouda captain train for the first half of the year last year and profited nicely off it. Gueri could blitz and VDV is a proven high points scorer. I think they are decent captains options. Hell I captained hunt last year and he got me 20. I would think ably downgrading baines to a 6.0 and upgrading Sinclair to downing or even better silva if you can find the cash.

Just looking at the premiership odds on Paddy Power. QPR are 9th favourate. Ahead of the likes of Sunderland. Personally i cant see how the came up with that but if you believe that the bookie never gets it wrong they might be worth getting some of their players in.

yaya can only go downhill imo. he's not going to get anymore attacking, probably much less attacking if anything and he wont inherit any set-pieces. he did well last season but it was well for a 5.5million player, not well for an 8 million player

Richards. Cole A. Rafael / Simpson. Briggs
Van der Vaart. Benayoun. N'Zogbia. Taarabt / Tiote
    Rooney. Suarez. Zamora

    Happy with this.

Will have to monitor Benayoun situation; want Chelsea cover but cant stretch to Malouda let alone Lampard.

    Thoughts?

That is a problem. If you can't stretch to a ~10m midfield player, you have no automatic 1for1 sub if VdV, Silva, Malouda, Kuyt etc etc start kicking off big-style.

In fact you may even have to wildcard to be able to fit them in.

You've gotta find the 0.5 to get Kompany over richards. Apart from that I like it, Rafael Is worth the punt. Could play a number of games straight if he is solid. I'll be starting with him.
