Manchester City yesterday announced the signing of Sergio Aguero from Athletico Madrid on a five-year contract. The 23 year old arrives at the Etihad Stadium in a deal rumoured to be in the region of £38m and is the club’s third foray into this summer’s transfer market, following the arrivals of Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic.

After months of speculation, in which the Argentine was strongly linked with both Juventus and Real Madrid, Roberto Mancini has finally got his man and Aguero’s addition will bring a true world-class talent to the Premier League next season.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Aguero promised:

My style has always been fight to the death for every ball and give 100 per cent in every game, concentrate to the maximum in everything I do, movement, running off the ball, winning the ball back and scoring goals. I’m not a player who can do everything but I have plenty to offer. I don’t think I’ll have too many problems settling into the team.

I think we are a team that in the future will be fighting every year to win major trophies. Let’s hope that it’s quite a few major trophies.

The Statistics

A prodigious talent, Aguero made his debut for Independiente at the tender age of 15 years and 35 days, breaking Diego Maradona’s record as the youngest player to take to the field in Argentina’s first division. Used sparingly in his first two campaigns, Aguero played just six times but gradually fought his way into the first-team and in total played 54 games over four seasons, scoring 23 goals and assisting 4.

In May 2006, Aguero then moved to Athletico Madrid for a fee believed to be around 23m Euros. Firmly established as a key member of the Athletico side, he missed just fifteen games during his five season stint in La Liga, playing 175 games, scoring 74 goals and assisting 29.

Last season saw Aguero break the 20-goal mark in Spain’s top division for the first time, as he finished third top scorer in La Liga; only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo found the net more often. Ironically, his 2 assists in 2010/11 were the lowest number of assists in any of his five campaigns at the Vicente Calderón, an indication that he’s more of a finisher than a real creative force. Aguero has also scored 16 goals and picked up 2 assists in 32 games for Argentina.

The Prospects

Much is dependant on the future of Carlos Tevez. Having missed out on a return to Brazil with former club Corinthians, Tevez has been linked with a move to Inter Milan- indeed, today’s papers reckon he’ll be gone before August is out. With Aguero now in place, it’s debatable as to whether Mancini would be prepared to hold onto a player whose presence may well have a negative effect on squad morale.

It’s impossible to tell if Aguero has been purchased as an immediate replacement for his countryman or if Mancini had initially visualised playing both in the same XI. Tevez, clearly, does not wish to stay in Manchester and with Aguero now on board, the City boss is in a position of strength- the new boy can easily replace Tevez up front in Mancini’s 4-2-3-1, meaning the club is no longer so dependant on their want-away star.

Aguero is also capable of playing out wide, behind a lone front man or as part of a front two and if Tevez stays, Aguero’s versatility may see him in a supporting role behind. Playing in the same XI as his compatriot could, however, even see the pair lessen each other’s appeal- Mancini is renowned for his defensive approach and there’s the very possible scenario of the duo sharing City’s goals equally, as opposed to last season where Tevez grabbed 20 of City’s 60 goals.

At present, the move raises more questions than it solves. It’s fairly certain that, in the long-term, Aguero will be the man to lead the line for City but for now, it demotes the likes of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko further down the pecking order and to the periphery of our Fantasy thinking. Tevez’s exit is the ideal scenario for Fantasy managers- Aguero has this afternoon been priced at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and should offer the same threat while being the more budget-friendly of the two.

With the club facing (SWA, WIG) in their first four game weeks, he’ll surely find his way into many a Fantasy team before the big kick-off a fortnight tomorrow. Aguero looks set to be a pivotal figure in City’s 2011/12 campaign and around 30 starts can be expected from the Argentine in what promises to be a sensational season ahead.

Not sure on Luiz starting. He probably will, but he was caught out a few times defensively last year, especially against Stoke. Wat you think mate?

Changed my team again and having a gamble this season:
    RMT please:
    Given
    Simpson
    Wilkinson
    Kompany
    Kelly
    Van der Vaart (C)
    Sinclair
    Taarbat
    Rooney (V)
    Suarez
    Aguero
    Subs:
    Ruddy
    Williams
    Benayoun
    Ferguson

Would like to bring in Foster for Ruddy and Malouda for Van der Vaart at some stage but need to check on Fosters value and what formation Chelsea will play.
I know that there are a lot of gambles but Sinclair & Taarbat were their clubs top scorers, Aguero has a good goal per game ratio and has played lots of La Liga games. Can see him doing a Torres style opening season.
What do you guys think? Any comments appreciated.

Suarez not to be rushed back apparently, but if Tevez does go, that looks as good as I have seen yet, whats left in the bank though, you might need to tighten up defence

1 million left in the bank, but I will need 0.5 for VDV/Malouda transfer in week 2 to take advantage of Chelsea 2 home games. Benayoun seems to have had a good pre season. May swap Kelly for Barsley at Sunderland or Hughes at Fulham. Simpson will be a regular, Williams was in the Championship team of the year and scores goals, Wilkinson should also be a regular for Stoke. Also when he is fit I plan to bring Gerrard into Midfield, I think he will benefit from Dalglish's new signings.

Yes for too long Gerrard has carried LFc on his own. Since the King returned he has other ideas and is going back to the basics of Paisley & Shankley. On form Gerrard is one of the World's best and scores some peaches too. I know that Dalglish has said he won't rush Suarez back but he will have had at least 2 weeks holiday before the season starts, how much more rest does he need? Plus he had a great tournament and is on fire at the moment. He is quality and hopefully Aguero will be too, either that or a bag of shite.

                  Where to begin?

Gerrard's been on a downward spiral since 2009. He doesn't have the energy or pace to be half as explosive or effective in the final third.

Suarez's 10/11 season finished last week. So while most others will be fully rested up, he's a good 6 weeks behind. Rushing him back after a break would mean he'd lack match fitness, and would probably risk burnout and injury.

Dalglish is no mug, and should have a good team behind him, so would know how unwise it would be to throw him back into the fold.

Point taken but I don't intend to put Gerrard back in until he is fully fit and got his match fitness back. However, he is still the first name that Dalglish will put on his team sheet, Carra, Gerrard and Dalglish are all good mates before Dalglish returned, the players rate Dalglish and Anfield is a happy place once again. The feel good factor plays a big part in a club's success.
As for Suarez, Dalglish has already said that he won't rush him back but he did have a rest before the Copa tournament and will probably be raring to get back into action.
I would have liked some Arsenal players in but wasn't too sure. Any ideas?

Not sold on Samba, Moses and Beckford. A lot on here rave about Moses but he didn't play alot last season. Beckford again not always a regular. I do like Samba but Blackburn are not the best. If you take out Moses and beckford how much money left over?

Holt from Norwich could be a good bet up front, Norwich captain so will play regularly and only 5.5 which would give you 6.5 in midfield. You thoiught about Sinclair (Swansea) or Taarbat (QPR) or even Walters (Stoke)?

I know that feeling well. Sometimes best to just go with your gut instinct. Play it safe or go for a wild gamble. I've looked at the stats for last season for the newly promoted clubs and gone for those who were top scorers and played regularly. plus looked at the Championship team of the year as a guide.

playing ff for few years but first time on this site so apologies if my views come across a bit wayward...

mortar-> samba, not for me; 5.5 for blackburn defender when hughes of fulham for 5? have doubts on orr but assume its coz you want defender for 4. if it was me, seeing as orr could easily be sub behind simpson for you, id possibly take a chance on briggs of fulham too as he may end up playing midfield. prob not worth the chance if you plan on orr as being a regular back for ya but i wouldn't fancy him to bring in big points.. Malouda for 10.5 is nuts at the min as from experience he can be very hot and cold and he is not necessarily a starter either considering benayouns return from injury and his v good preseason at the minute. kalou at 7.5 could be just as likely to get points at the start of season. benayoun for 7 is what iv gone for as i think he will def get a run and chelseas 1st 3 games are good.. you could go with drogba for 10.5 instead.. while he wont be a player id go with for the season, im seriously considering him for the start as torres still seems to have lost his mojo. imo drogba is a better buy than RVP who you have as arsenal have liv and united in their 1st 3 games and he will be a marked man then! also watch suarez, im not sure he will start the first 2 games and if he doesn't it is likely a whole load of people will transfer him out for next gameweek meaning his value will likely drop to 9.4 by gameweek 2. when he does come into the team tho i think he is a no brainer for 9.5ish.. id prob change brunt for sinclair if you need to keep mid at 6, sinclair more of a striker and is penalty taker as far as i know tho could be wrong.. and finally for 6.5, id also change beckford for rodelega for start of season considering wigans run of matches.. hope this isn't too rude etc, just my opinion... anyway moment of truth, my first draft tho i have already thought of changing it...
                given (al habsi)

                benayoun, n'zogbia, dempsey, valencia, (moses)
                rooney, drogba (graham)

drogba will be changed for suarez round gameweek 4 id say. hoping jags goes to arsenal then il def keep him otherwise il sub in clichy with money from drogs. valencia may not start but in terms of points v rotation he is as good as nani and young imo but 2 mil less. moses is gamble but as i dont have him starting i dont mind too much for 1st week, and finally i will go for holt instead of graham when drogs sold also.... anyone comment and i will return favour...
