There’s plenty of Premier League clubs in action this afternoon, as pre-season starts to pick up the pace. Ahead of an afternoon in front of the tv with the Emirates Cup and Dublin Super Cup served up as weekend offerings, here’s this morning’s Scout Scribbles:

Roberto Mancini has warned his Premier League rivals that the signing of Sergio Aguero won’t be Man City’s last this summer. Speaking in a press conference ahead of this weekend’s Dublin Super Cup, the Italian explained:

If we want to compete with all the other top teams – Champions League or Premier League – we need other players, but the club are working in this way.

When asked what positions he felt the club needed to bolster, Mancini elaborated:

“One midfielder, one winger.”

This statement will only add to the speculation of a move for Samir Nasri and perhaps further re-inforce the idea that Adam Johnson could be heading to Everton in a loan deal, with Mancini yet to be convinced by his young winger’s consistency, much to the chagrin of the City fans.

James Collins has spoken at length of the new defensive solidity shown by Aston Villa in pre-season. Villa were something of a disappointment in terms of Fantasy investment last season, racking up just 7 clean sheets compared to 15 in the previous 2009/10 campaign but, under new boss Alex McLeish, are looking a better proposition at the back already.

Collins points to the re-introduction of Stephen Warnock to the starting XI as a significant boost to the side, saying:

Stephen had come back in and he’s been great. Obviously when he wasn’t in the team last season, you could still see in training he was still keen to show his qualities. Since he’s been back in, the two games he’s played and in training he’s looked first-class again. So that is like a new signing if you like. I am looking forward to playing with him again.

Warnock played just half Villa’s league games last season and as a result, comes in at 5.0, compared to the 5.5 of Collins and fellow centre-half Richard Dunne.

Aaron Ramsey looks likely to have a pivotal role for Arsenal in this weekend’s Emirates Cup. With Cesc Fabregas sidelined with a hamstring injury and Arsene Wenger concerned over his “unsettled” captain’s state of mind, Ramsey will take centre stage against the likes of Paris Saint Germain and New York Red Bulls over the next couple of days and spoke of his determination to make up for lost time, following his leg-break in February of last year. Playing in the advance central midfield role usually taken by Fabregas, many Fantasy managers will be eyeing up Ramsey ahead of next season; with a 6.5 FPL price-tag against his name, the young Welshman may be a steal.

In other Arsenal-related news, Arsene Wenger confirmed the news that Theo Walcott’s ankle injury is not as bad as the club had anticipated. Asked in yesterday’s press conference if the player will be ready for the start of the season in a fortnight’s time, Wenger replied that the club are hopeful on the matter. A bit of good news for the Gunners, then.

The idea of a Carlos Tevez/Samuel Eto’o swap deal has re-surfaced once again. Both Man City and Inter Milan are taking part in this weekend’s Dublin Super Cup and with Tevez desperate for a move away from the Etihad Stadium, City are reportedly determined to seal a deal for Eto’o, their long-term target.

A hamstring injury may have scuppered John O’Shea’s start to his Sunderland career, but Black Cats boss Steve Bruce is confident his new captain will be fit for the season opener at Liverpool:

I’ve got no worries about John. I’m not looking at risking him in our next two friendlies – it’s a case of erring on the right side caution….the knock he’s got is not a serious one. And he’s one of those players who can come into training and pick things up very quickly. As things stand, I’m sure he’ll be all right for the Liverpool game.

Great news, then, for Fantasy managers considering O’Shea ahead of the August 13th kick-off. Priced at 5.0 in FPL, we’re expecting big things from the Irishman this season, too; check out our Members Projections area to see just why.

QPR look set to boost their forward options by snapping up DJ Campbell from relegated Blackpool. Campbell was one of the best value Fantasy options last term, scoring 13 goals for Ian Holloway’s side, but while Blackpool were given license to attack by Holloway’s open 4-3-3 formation, QPR tend to operate far more tentatively, with a 4-2-3-1 shape set up to get the best out of Adel Taarabt. Campbell may well be vying with fellow new signing Jay Bothroyd for the lone forward slot, unless Neil Warnock has an alternative plan up his sleeve.

Spurs were the only Premier League club in action yesterday, chalking up a 4-1 win at Leyton Orient. Nico Krancjar continued his fantastic pre-season form by grabbing a goal, with Peter Crouch picking up a double in the one-sided affair. Krancjar is a real source of frustration for Fantasy managers- clearly, he’s got the talent but, in spite of his recent impressive form, it would be something of a surprise if he found his way into Harry Redknapp’s first-team thinking at Tottenham. At just 6.0, many will be hoping ‘Arry has a change of heart, particularly if Luka Modric does depart the Lane this summer.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hello. Any Man City fans out there?
    Lescott vs Toure…

Seen some assumptions that Toure would affect Lescott’s place… how solid was the Kompany-Lescott partnership last season (think Lescott is useful at both ends of the pitch, no?) and would there be rotations if options available? I think Lescott is underated; his stats are v good and would have thought the status quo would be kept for stability?? When is Toure available exactly.

Probably not critical with the Kompany option, but how much rotation could we expect with the fullbacks…??

    Cheers.

Well toure was first choice before his ban so we can't really be sure if lescott did enough to change mancini's mind.

so for now kompany is definitely the safe option and who knows, he could score s goal or two himself!

I have just altered things, had RVP first in, but thinking fixtures first and bring him in later.

              ATM Im on

              Given/Ruddy
              Kompany,Baines,Brown,Simpson,Wilkinson
              VDV,Downing, Moses,Taarabt,Petrov
              Bent,Aguero,Zamora

1 million in bank to allow VDV-Malouda and some flexibility to get Suarez/RVP as fixtures, form etc dictate. Obv if Tevez stays or Eto arrives Aguero goes out again!

Life is good mate, although still looking for a new job, sun is shining!

Im avoiding Lamps to be honest..pricey and may play deep....just me though!

No, because, as with Hangeland, Baines is the dominant figure, not just in the Everton defence, but in the team as a whole: top of Everton under the new system, and 8th. in the whole league. He becomes viable captaincy material, imo.

Need a replacement for Huth - Anyone think its worth doubling on Man City defence with Kompany.... it paid off for my brother last season with Zabaleta and Toure a couple of GWs

Might want to reconsider doubling up on Vila defence (Warnock and Given). Maybe add in something from Sunderland. Also think that as either Nasri or Ramsey will fill in for Cesc, there's a bargain somehwere in the Arsenal midfield.

For Ramsey to start 3 things need to happen:

      - Mata needs to stay put or join Sp*rs.

Not neccessarily the third. Might be put on the LW rotating with the fat russian and 'someone else' potentially. Gerv and Walcott mainly RW... with more potential to move centrally. Although, this might be more of a longer term plan for stability reasons.

Can see us turning into more of a counter team with more pace and play directed out wide, with JW and Ramsey centrally. Dropping the central players out wide stuff and over-reliance on Cesc/ central incisiveness... might not be this season though!

Hope so. Think we have realised that our build up play is too slow - certainly a (perceived) change in the types of young wide players we have got in. Have come to rely on Cesc's rediculous assist capacity also... which needs to be countered.

                  Tough question!
"Can we sell this little sh.t if he doesn't want to sign a contract please?"
One possibility is he won't sign unless he plays centrally... don't think this is the most likely (can see him wanting to play for Man City) or desirable from our point of view in terms of commitment.
I think he is too ponderous on the ball to move centrally and we would become too nasri centric ala Cesc. Therefore I would sell/ keep him wide. Think JW+Ramsey would be more efficient and direct our play wider. I would probably rank Mata (potentially) centrally over Nasri also... pass+mover... if we wanted to speed things up a bit against better opposition.

To sum up: unclear as yet, our midfield is chaos! Wenger is keen on his stability in his team, although this year is different... so it is unclear whether both will be 'allowed' to leave.

Couple of games this weekend for arsenal, so maybe clearer! Cheers.

Ok mate good luck with it. It will need to be very consistent 3bp returns if these players are to have a hope of matching alternative attacking players that get goals, assists, set pieces.

I'd try get a better keeper pairing.

Also, Henderson/Wilshere/De Jong I wouldn't have. Just can see any of them scoring well on a semi consistent dasis. lots of other good options out there around that price range, e.g. Ramsey/S. Hunt/Albrighton etc.

I prefer Drogba to Bent, but hey, you've got the balance close to spot on imo.

Also, Osman all the way. Second player on my teamsheet this season.

    Sagna, vermelian, jags, Gibbs

    Ramsey

    Walcott/gerv Mata

I've gone for Given and Al Habsi and that rotates pretty well, plus Al Habsi offers more save points than Ruddy and Kenny.

It's not all about rotation, though. Wolves and West Brom rotate home and away perfectly, doesn't mean you'd want any of their defenders.

Rotation is irrelevant if the teams in questions don't keep (m)any clean sheets.

So no-one tempted by Aguero then? I reckon you can make a decent team with him in:

    Given Ruddy
    Komps ACole Bramble Simpson Briggs
    Malouda N'Zog Taarabt Duff Moses
    RVP Aguero Holt

    .5 in the bank

That is decent. Pretty sure im going with Aguero aswell, a lot depends on what happens with Tevez and the Community shield.

I was speaking to my mate about Aguero. I've never seen him play, but my mate reckons his work rate is like Tevez. That said, the new bonus system doesn't recognise if you're running 12km a game, so I still don't think it's worth it.

And can anyone name 3 players who have killed it in their first season of English football in the last three seasons? I can only name Odemwingie

Kompany is the preferred Man City defender even though his points per game ratio over last few seasons is not as good as any of them... yes he is USUALLY a confirmed starter unless injured (again)

but isnt it about the risk ? e.g lescott/toure - goals , zabaleta/kolarov/clichy - assists alongside the cleanies

He was classed as a midfielder, hence the "not as good as others" ppg ratio...
