Our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. The three-part approach, which takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections, will hopefully help to steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Judging by the voting in this week’s Captain Poll, there’s no real standout candidate as we head towards Gameweek 5. United’s Wayne Rooney just edges it at the summit – ahead of a trip to Leicester, he receives just over 21% of votes cast after grabbing a goal and assist in last week’s comprehensive home win over QPR.

Team-mate Angel di Maria picked up similar returns against the R’s and has persuaded 17% to hand him the captaincy – only just less than Chelsea’s prolific Diego Costa. Despite firing seven goals in four appearances, most Fantasy managers reckon the summer signing faces a tough task to continue his scoring streak as the Blues roll up to the Etihad, with many fearing Jose may park the bus again.

Further down, Emmanuel Adebayor, with a mere 7% FPL ownership, offers a strong differential alternative. Rested from Tottenham’s midweek Europa League match, he takes on an out-of-sorts West Brom backline that that conceded two or more goals in three out of four matches under new manager, Alan Irvine. Radamel Falcao also find a place in the top five for United’s visit to the King Power Stadium, despite finding himself on the bench last weekend.

Elsewhere, a trio of highly-owned midfielders are also in consideration. Gylfi Sigurdsson has delivered 16 points in his two appearances at the Liberty ahead of the visit of Southampton, whilst Aaron Ramsey – similar to the Swans playmaker – has scored or assisted in three of his four appearances as Arsenal make their way to Villa. After being rested from the starting XI last weekend, Raheem Sterling is a sure starter for Liverpool’s trip to West Ham – two goals in three appearances in the Reds’ starting line-up bodes well against a backline yet to keep out their opponents.

Danny Welbeck is the highest Arsenal player in this week’s Poll as the Gunners attempt to break down the league’s most resilient defence. Yet to open his account for Arsene Wenger’s side, the deadline-day signing is backed by over 4% of your votes – more than Sergio Aguero ahead of City’s clash with Chelsea, despite the Argentine scoring in three of his four league appearances.

For the few that saw that eleven I posted on the last page and were puzzled by it and how shite it was especially for a WC team http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/09/19/captain-sensible-gameweek-5/?hc_page=18#hc_comment_8329965 Well I have to inform you that in fact those starters make up FPL's current dream team and while most of them arent considered particularly flashy players or even good FPL picks they have made their way to the top. (Note that the bench of Chambers, Kun and Baines is what you could afford with the dream team as your starters). I have done this to show that there are so many unknown quantities in FPL and even the most absurd punts can pan out at some point and that it doesn't always pay to go for the template side and go along with what is considered the norm, not a single FPL player would have wanted that team at the start but right now after seeing the production they've been able to display who can honestly say that they wouldn't have wanted them pre-GW1 had they known what was in store. I will try to take full responsibility for my failures in FPL but I will always be grateful for the advice I receive on here in times of triumph. So I guess all I can do is put some final touches on my WC and hope for the best with it.

And? I as well as many others have fallen susceptible to common trends in terms of selling and buying certain players and that has led to some pretty bad weeks recently and i'm trying to remind those wallowing in despair about it that the points so far have been pretty random and that their teams will get back on topin due time

You need to look ahead to fixtures, and benching kun is silly if youve paid to get him, hes fixture proof, also baines' attacking potential against teams like CP is why he costs 6.9

Mate i'm not actually getting that team I was just trying to prove a point. The team I have atm is:

        Forster (McCarthy)
        Baines-Clyne-PvA-Chambers-Moore
        Chadli-Fabregas-Hazard-Sterling-Siggy
        Costa-Pelle-Dat Guy

the law of average means that Dier was never gonna score 2 in 2 for the rest of the season.... he might not score again this season in fact.

picking the template team is all about long-term probability.

I've been sticking quite closely to the template myself, but have made a couple of punts each week (like captaining Tadic last week) to make my team stand out. My aim from the start of the season was to stay in the top 10% and not fall behind, so to that end the template team has helped me achieve my initial goal. As the season wears on im sure hazard, adm, walcott, chadli etc will remove the template option as there will simply be too many alternatives, but for now im very satisfied with my team.

No Ive had Fab since day one, hes a proven points scorer.
Falcao came into the league an unknown, off an injury.
Putting him in immediately was premature

And Falcao is not a proven scorer? It's not like this is some kids first game ever. This is possibly the most pure goal scorer in the world. I wouldn't sweat OP. If not this week, for sure next week he will be the main man at MU.

    Good evening DZ.

I've not been around much, but it's lovely to finally have some time to myself. Although I just got my FIFA 15 disk, so I might get distracted 🙂

What's your team for the week btw? And what do you reckon is a good score to aim for? I think a lot hinges on what Rooney and Sterling do as I'm not counting on much input from the others if I'm totally honest.

60+ is good to aim for

          Green
          Ivanovic Clyne Chambers
          Ramsey(vc) Sterling(c) Fabregas Sigurdsson
          Aguero Naismith Welbeck

Not lunacy, but I'm not feeling trigger happy with Rooney.

I said after GW 3 that i'd never captain rooney again after his blank vs Burnley but here I am again... He'll be testing my patience very much if he doesn't score.

well some fans want him to be rested so that we can rotate the squad, but I don't think he will...wenger seems pretty adamant about playing the 4-1-4-1 system, and the ramsey-wilshere combo in central midfield is key to it...

Can't wait to have theo back and play 4-2-3-1. we play better with that formation.

a little rule that i made up for myself recently:

"when in doubt play the striker"

    To business.

I have double Chelsea defence right now, and want to move one of them out.

Do you think it's worth it for a hit this week?
Rest of the backline is Chambers, Wisdom, Hutton along with Cahill & Terry.

Baines is winking at me with this Palace game, although his following two are not great.

      • 11 Years

Lol Terry AND Cahill. That's some punt that has failed miserably for you. If I were you I'd probably sell Terry for Baines and play Chambers-Hutton-Baines this week.

Laughing out loud, that's not very nice 🙂
Yep, the plan hasn't worked out.

I'd sell Cahill for more cash, in the hope Terry (as the cheaper way in) will rise once they do start keeping cleanies.

I'm playing Terry, the park the bus possibility is worth one of them starting. Better than Hutton I'd have thought.

Trying to decide which 1 of these 8 player I should bench this week. Slightly leaning toward Mata at this stage...

    Siggy - Henderson - Fabregas - Ramsey - Mata
    Rooney - Naismith - Costa

    Thoughts?

Hey guys i've still got my FT and have 1.6 mil in the bank, would you suggest any transfers? or a captaincy/ line up change?

    Krul
    Rojo Pieters Colocini
    Ramsey Sterling Eriksen Tadic
    Rooney (C) Costa Diouf

    Foster Clyne Marney Moore

Not too keen on double Newcastle defence but they have the best defensive fixture from my team.
