Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Saints Go Marching On

Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne both find the net as Southampton send Arsenal tumbling out of the Capital One Cup. Alexis Sanchez’ goal scoring form continues for the Gunners, Swansea pair Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer notch for Swansea again, while Liverpool and Everton turn in worrying displays ahead of the weekend Merseyside derby.

Saints Stun the Emirates

Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne were both on the scoresheet as Southampton overcame an early deficit to defeat Arsenal 2-1 in their Capital One Cup third-round tie yesterday evening. Ronald Koeman made just five changes from the side that narrowly defeated Swansea at the weekend, with Victor Wanyama handed a starting role after his winning Liberty strike, and Saido Mane offered his first start since his summer move to St Mary’s.

The Scout Says: Koeman’s men are going from strength to strength right now, and Fantasy interest shows no signing of waning. Whilst Graziano Pelle is the attacking asset of choice, last night’s victory taught us that Tadic is on penalties for the Saints, and offered us a first glimpse of Mane’s potential – the Senegal international earned the spot-kick that Tadic subsequently slotted home, and put in a performance that gave plenty of indication of the verve and flair he could bring to the league. Meanwhile, at the back, Ryan Bertrand’s owners will have been glad to see the left-back make just a five-minute appearance from the bench last night, whilst fellow defender Clyne’s strike was his second of the season in all competitions – although his price has now reached 5.3, the full-back still looks incredible value as the Saints face four home encounters (QPR, SUN, STO, LEI) in the next six.

Sanchez Strikes Again for Gunners

Alexis Sanchez marked his recall to Arsene Wenger’s first-team with the Gunners’ only goal in their loss to the Saints. Jack Wilshere also earned a recall, whilst Calum Chambers completed another 90 minutes at right-back for his new club.

The Scout Says: The Chilean was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, and with the much-maligned Mesut Ozil impressing in that encounter, Sanchez’s owners may have feared that another sub role could be on the cards for this weekend’s north London derby. Last night’s superbly taken free-kick should bring the summer signing back into the reckoning for a starting berth on Sunday, however, and with three goals in his last four appearances in all competitions, and three home fixtures to come in the Gunners’ next five in the league, the in-form Sanchez is making a strong case to be considered as our Arsenal midfielder of choice right now, in spite of his lofty 10.4 price tag.

SIGURDSSON AND DYER ON TARGET FOR SWANS

Both Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer once again showed their goal scoring prowess as Swansea swept aside Everton 3-0 in their Capital One Cup tie. The two midfielders scored either side of half-time before substitute Marvin Emnes added a late third, whilst Jonjo Shelvey picked up his fourth booking of the season, making the former Liverpool man just one more caution short of a one-match ban.

The Scout Says: Though many have written off Dyer’s prospects due to the impressive early-season form of Sigurdsson, and a lack of faith in doubling up on Swansea’s midfield assets, it appears that the two midfielders are going to go toe-to-toe for our investment as the season unfolds. Whilst the latter has played every minute of league football this season, and has the majority of set piece duties in his locker, Dyer is 0.9 cheaper than the Icelandic international and has an ownership level almost 30% less than his team-mate – with four goals to his name now in all competitions, he is certainly emerging as one to watch and could well eclipse Sigurdsson in our estimations as the weeks progress.

EVERTON’S DEFENSIVE FRAILTIES CONTINUE

Roberto Martinez fielded a very different looking backline to the one we have seen in the league this season but despite a total of eight alterations to the XI, the Toffees’ poor defensive form continued with a 3-0 loss at the Liberty.

The Scout Says: Three goals conceded was on a par with their loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend, and with trips to Liverpool and Man United on the horizon for the Toffees, faith in Everton’s rearguard will surely continue to rely on their attacking potential. The main positive for Fantasy managers is that yesterday’s loss does lighten the schedule for Martinez’s men, which could subsequently mean less rotation – owners of Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith were left disappointed as the in-form pair were rested at the weekend, and will now be happier to see the fixture list begin to ease a little for the Toffees.

LIVERPOOL EDGE PAST BORO

It took a 30-penalty shoot-out for Liverpool to finally progress past Middlesbrough in their League Cup tie yesterday. Brendan Rodgers made eight changes to his starting XI at the weekend – Raheem Sterling was one of the few to maintain his starting role and played the full 120 minutes, though was the only Reds player to miss in the shoot-out. Debutant Jordan Rossiter grabbed the opening goal, with fellow youngster Suso notching the home side’s second in extra time, before Kolo Toure conceded the penalty that saw Boro make it 2-2 and force the match into a shoot-out.

The Scout Says: Rodgers has already warned us that he won’t risk Sterling burning out in the first half of the season, and with the young winger completing the full 120 minutes last night, his 47.5% ownership will now be anxiously awaiting the teamsheet for Saturday afternoon’s Merseyside derby. However, having lost their last two league fixtures, Rodgers is hardly in a position to be too forward-thinking with his team selection against the Toffees – a win is vital if the Reds are serious about their title-winning ambitions this season, and with his side turning in another unconvincing display, the Reds boss will surely send out a full-strength side come the weekend. With home encounters against West Brom and Hull City either side of a trip to struggling QPR to follow, Sterling’s place atop our Watchlist is still assured, though he will have to perform considerably better than last night if he is to maintain that position.

MUNIESA THE HERO FOR STOKE

Left-back Marc Muniesa bagged an unlikely brace as Stoke overcame Sunderland 2-1 in their Capital One Cup clash at the Stadium of Light last night. Black Cats striker Jozy Altidore notched his first goal in 30 appearances to put his side ahead, before Muniesa – in his first start of the season – drove in two powerful strikes to send the Potters through to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: Muniesa’s match-winning performance could see the ex-Barcelona defender challenge Erik Pieters for his starting berth when Stoke host Newcastle on Monday night, and with a price tag of just 4.4, could prove a great budget alternative to Marc Wilson in the Potters’ back-line if he can oust the Dutchman from the XI. With a kind run of fixtures in the next five Gameweeks for Mark Hughes’ side (NEW, sun, SWA, sou, WHM), many will be eyeing up their defensive assets, though with Muniesa now set to scrap for a full-back role, Ryan Shawcross remains the safest option for those willing to spend that little bit extra.

A QPR goal would not go down well 'round these parts, seeing the Saints defensive group hugging that's going on...Stevie C, center stage.

I agree with what your saying, but I quite often look at the titles and cannot be asked to look at them as they seem so unexciting. My opinion only obviously, but thats why I am trying to canvas opinions.

Jonty is probably suffering from burnout 😉 He must come up with 90% of the titles and still manages some crackers so I'll defend him vigorously in that regard - time pressure and repetition definitely blunt the creative edge though.

Valargentina is and he posted this a few days ago, do you agree with your fellow fan?

      Valargentina:

      ULLOA vs VARDY

When Leicester play 3 uptop Ulloa and Vardy and probably Nugent will start. Ulloa is the main target man, Nugent drops deeper and does the dirty work and Vardy offers pace on the counter. Considerin they've got 3 away games coming up expect Vardy to be their main outlet as he'll be the one getting the ball out of leicesters half and into dangerous areas on counters. When they play 2 uptop it'll be Ulloa and Vardy. Ulloa again the main target man and Vardy creating and making space for others etc just behind him.. Nugent will see the bench more often while Vardy and Ulloa are nailed on. When Nugent is on the pitch he is on penos.. when he is not Ulloa will be on them.
Last season Vardy was the most impressive player in the championship for me.. preseason i'd backed him to be teh main man at leicester and the budget price of 5 seemed too good to pass up but now that his injury worry is behind him i'm getting him straight away. While i love the beast that is Ulloa, i love guys like Vardy. much more entertaining to watch and the likeliness of an explosive score of the bench is higher. Just signed a new contract and i'm glad for the foxes that he did. he is quite a player.. Also Vardy at 4.9 is easily benchable while Ulloa at 0.7 more will mean you'll prob have to play him more often than not(which may not be a bad thing 🙂 ) .. anyway. just my 2 cents.. take it or leave it 🙂

Agree with everything on there, besides his 'nailed-on-ness'. Ulloa is nailed on. We simply have too much competition for Vardy to be nailed on. With Schlupp, Mahrez, Knockaert, Albrighton and Lawrence offering competition, Vardy won't be nailed on in a 433. Saying that, whilst he's in this form, he's un-droppable, of course.

the definition of fpl nailed and real life nailed varies. The risk with Vardy is if he goes through a bad run of form for a few games he could be dropped cause there are loads of quality players fighting for his position too. however if ulloa goes through a bad run of form fpl managers will drop him anyway even though there's no one for Pearson to replace him with really

      Similar issues, no definitive answer

      Considerations:
Sterling played 120 mins so may be rested though it is Everton.
Ulloa is the cheapest so always tempting to bench the least expensive
Ramsey's touches in final third not been that high last 2 weeks.

Sterling played 120 mins yesterday and will play midweek for CL. He could play limited minutes. And I would find a way to make my life easier and bench a player every week

So a measure of change in performance in any given gameweek? Nice idea, probably a bit more involved than Doosra's request. I suppose the KPIs and comparison tool do some of that work, incorporating it into the user definable tables would be a big step I imagine. I'll register the ask but as with the above request, no idea on timescale unfortunately.

So a second column alongside one (or more?) of the selected table columns showing over/under performance in the current gameweek to help identify those on the wax or wane. I may be misinterpreting though.

Don't have ADM. Considered Hazard to do better when I used my WC in GW3. So far I'm wrong, but it can turn out to be right if he gets some pens. ADM with one world class goals, one lucky goal and 2 assists that seems like shots. His has been fortunate to get so many points, while Hazard have been unlucky if you look at the underlying stats.

      Gotta be the caulkemeister.
Colo slightly higher CS chance, but can't ignore that goal threat.

Newcastle look horrible at the back, but so do QPR. Colo always stay back home on corners, if you've kept Caulker, play him imo.

Hi guys, I'm currently sat just outside of 12k, I don't think I've ever been this high, so would appreciate some help/advice in order to stay there...

    My current squad:

    McGregor -- Heaton
    Clyne -- Bardsley -- Naylor -- Kelly -- Caulker
    Mata -- Ramsey -- Sterling -- Fabregas -- Marney
    Costa -- Rooney -- Naismith

    2 FT's, nothing ITB...

I guess my main issues are Mata and Naismith, potentially Rooney, potentially Ramsey...
In terms of acquisitions, I feel I need Di Maria...

    Thinking:
    Mata --> Siggy
    Ramsey --> Di Maria
    Naismith --> Ulloa

Is that worth a 4-point hit? Or shall I just do the first two, and risk Naismith? He didn't feature at all last night, may indicate he's back in line to start at the weekend?

Any help is very much appreciated...

He will probably start, not sure if he'll get many points though, but it's possible. All those transfers looks good imo, not sure if you should do -4 or not though

It's the Di Maria transfer that causes you problems with budgetting, yet it's the only one where you transfer a viable alternative out. Personally, I wouldn't do it

      1. The Governor
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 7 months ago

Yes I know, I would happily keep Ramsey one more week, but I can't afford a straight Mata --> Di Maria.

        Is ADM essential?

I'm top of my ML, but only by 10 points, and I don't want to have to hide behind the sofa when United play West Ham!!

      B. Very close for me again, both are the main men of their team's attack, but --> Pelle

I'd personally hold off one more week for both. vs avl? NLD? Both good fixtures for what you have. I'd give Haz one more week at least, he's bound to pay you back for your faith.

If I had to tho I'd go Rambo -> Di Maria purely based on current form.
