It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

but at this stage of season the top percentile must have had the people who've done well so far (obviously i suppose), but will he keep it up, do people think, or is he over-achieving for his stats (and easy fixtures)

Overachieving stats wise but you only need 1 good stat per game to get an attacking return.

This is it, its no good creating loads of chances or taking loads of shots at goal if the ball doesn't end up in the net.

With ADM the quality of the players he provides chances for means that conversion rates will be very high, while his own talent should see him take the chances he gets.

The finish (vs Lei) and Mata burying that shot-cum-cross (QPR) are fine examples of this.

these are fair points although that mata assist may have been lucky. still though, i'd like to see him having more shots. i think i'm going to stay away and hide behind the couch

He looks very good and most of United's attacking play seems to go through him.

He is also cheaper than Rooney, Falcao and RvP, and far more nailed than any of them.

PPG he looks excellent. I don't see any reasonable argument for not having him, other than its bait boring if you like to chase the diff's

      1. the axolotl
        • 14 Years

but he rarely gets touches in the box, and doesn't have a lot of shots. i see him as an assist machine.

fair enough while utd have looked a good fpl source of attacking points, they're still having a very bad start to the season. and given they can't buy new defenders, and they have a bit of an injury crisis at the back, i think the team will need to get more defensive as a whole. OR they'll have to go hell for leather and score 5 goals to win games.

I'd also add that touches in the box is not necessarily the best KPI for a midfielder.

While he has had far fewer touches in the box on average than the top midfielder, Fabregas, he has far more SHOTS in the box, with much improved accuracy and conversion.

you need to tick "average by GW" since ADM has played a lot less football than Fabregas

Ok right. you make sense, mostly, especially around the increased conversion rates for assist potential. but if you're taking things like that into consideration, then the fact that they've come against the 3 promoted teams also has to be considered.

Yep, and they are the only three that ADM has played.

                    Definitely something to factor in.

So, RE Mata's goal being a flukey assist, IT IS. No question.

The reason i raise the point is that the fact there are so many high quality players in the final third at United means that those things become more probable than, say, a side with Emile Heskey leading the line.

How often do we see a miss hit cross/shot etc leading to a chance?

It happens enough to be a factor, and when the player shooting is of high quality you're more likely to get the points than the returns.

Quality is subjective, but its worth factoring in when making statistical comparisons.

Di Maria is a good pick IMO. He's too good not to be involved in everything United do going forward. He'll pick up points for fun.
Replacing Ramsey is a different story going off stats, but some might think its worth a punt as if Ramsey finds his scoring form, Di Maria can easily be downgraded (price wise)
