It’d be fair to say that when the pre-season player lists were revealed last July, Stewart Downing was far from our thoughts as a viable Fantasy option. A goal and two assists over 2,507 minutes in 2013/14 highlights his lack of impact in a West Ham outfit that scored just 40 times over the entire campaign, and despite reports suggesting Sam Allardyce’s side were set to go on the attack this time around, we were anything but convinced.

After five Gameweeks, though, the Hammers are starting to deliver. A 3-1 win over Liverpool means they have now scored nine times so far – averaging of 1.8 goals per match compared to last year’s 1.05 – and, from a Fantasy perspective at least, Downing has been the player to benefit most. A total of 27 points is just six off the top of the midfield standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and sees the 5.5-priced Downing sandwiched in between Aaron Ramsey and Eden Hazard, on 28 and 25 points respectively.

With a goal, two assists and six bonus points accrued, Downing’s prospects could be boosted further by a switch in formation which afforded him the role in “the hole” behind Enner Valencia last weekend.

In our next members article of the week, we turn to the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) tables in order to assess the 2%-owned Downing’s displays in comparison to the season gone by.

For those who aren’t familiar with them, KPI tables are designed to use a series of key stats to allow our members to track form or changes in player performance. By tracking the frequency of certain key statistics and comparing them over two separate periods of time, we can ascertain whether a player’s form has improved or declined. As mentioned in last summer’s introductory article, we’ve rolled out a preview movie which shows just how to get the best out of the KPI tables.

and Depay and Cuadrado have 5* Skills! I think I'm actually need to learn how to use them this year! It's been so hard to use them since fifa 12 for me, I think they changed them at some point

James is one of the most overrated players in the world. Cuadrado carried him throughout the whole World Cup.

Cuadrado assisted all but one of James' goals. Cuadrado did all the dirty worker for Colombia. He attacked, defended and ran non-stop. James was only there to claim the tap-ins and steal the spotlight. Cuadrado is by far the superior player to James.

I agreed with the second part of your initial statement but James is definitely not overrated. He was fantastic at the world cup and simply incredible for Monaco last year. Most James haters dont realized how well he played in ligue 1

James scored 9 goals in 34 appearances in Ligue 1 last season as a no 10.
Cuadrado scored 11 goals in 32 appearances in a Serie A last season from the wing.

Not to mention that James played for a relatively better team and a league where it is easier to score.

Yeah...I dont think you watched the rest of the Columbian team play once. I agree with Cuadrados contribution to the team but Rodriguez was an integral part of the team. If you really think all James did was score a couple of tap ins and "claim the spotlight" then you should probably think again.

Bah. Statistics can be twisted. A player mightnt have any more liklihood of scoring in each individual game but the probability that he will score in over a batch of games must be inlcuded. Look at Burnley. Havent scored or conceded for the last three games. Now, statistically speaking there nothing to say they wont score 0-0 for the remainder of the season but we both know this wont happen.

I just did Krul>Forster for a hit. All Forster needs is a clean sheet this weekend, and at worst i'll be neutral to what Krul would have done. With Forsters fixtures, he could get 4 CS of the next 6 games

Guys help with a draft trade. Which pair would you rather have?

    A) Valencia & Silva

I have Ramsey and Adebayor. The other player has Silva and Valencia. I'm not sure if it's worth doubling up on Walcott and Ramsey and the trade may spread things a little considering I have no City players in my draft side. Just wanted some opinions on the matter...

    hi lads

have a few moves I want to make, but also want to try and have 2 FT for international break; thinking of:

    Moreno + Rooney > Moore + Aguero (-4)

    .....................Begovic
    .........Ivanovic - Clyne - Moreno
Sigurdsson - Cesc - Sterling - Di Maria
    .........Rooney - Naismith - Costa

    Gilks; Chambers, Marney, Hutton

    1 FT, 0.7m itb

Is it basically you get a list of players at the start then you buy transfer in players using the transfer window etc?

Do you just play against the computer all the time? Doesn't that become a bit boring? I mean I can usually beat the computer quite easily.

The issue I have is that I definitely want to get Forster in at some stage, and due to other more imminent transfers I have planned, I wouldn't be able to get him in for the next few weeks without doing a -4....so in my mind Forster only needs to gain 4 more points than Bego over the next 3 game weeks for it to pay off.

Also ideally I'd like to get him in before his expected price rise

for example I did Ramsey > ADM and then capped him on Friday night because I just felt it was the right move even though Ramsey was delivering and ADM could have been just been flash in the pan against QPR (no doubting his quality, but doesn't always translate to FPL) and it paid off

Worth my second free transfer to swap Silva for Tadic? I know the injury is probably nothing, but Silva's goal threat has been nonexistent, I just haven't had the time to sell him yet.

      Krulliot

      Terry-Clyne-Wisdom (Chambers-Moore)

      Hazard-Sterling-Silva-Siggy (Albrighton)

      Rooney-Pelle-Adebayor (Earmarked for Costa)

Both, really. I think he's on 4 shots for the season. He did look pretty lively against Arsenal though, missed the second half of the Chelsea game but his corners were horrendous in the first half.

Going off my post just above, it may be prudent to use a free every week to just pick a third striker with just the peachiest home fixture.

      For example...

      Pelle v Qpr week 5
      Enner v Qpr week 6
      Welbeck v Hull week 7

      Etc etc etc

I'm pretty happy with the rest of my team for the most part. May just use a free for a striker punt/choice each week.

It'd be an interesting strategy. I feel like it's too hard to predict though. The easiest fixture doesn't always yield the best haul.

Never works out like this though. You always have some transfer to make. Something to sort out. Then youre stuck with some deadweight Leicester striker cos he but a couple past United a few weeks ago and youre wondering why you ever drafted him in 😉

So long as you can keep rolling with 2 FT each week. Why not? But it would mean the rest of your team is perfectly fine 😉 anyone playing QPR seems the best option at the minute so yeah Pelle now.

Already have Clyne and Forster so there's no urgency to get another Saints defender but i'm just thinking out loud. Care to share how come you think roonpig will outscore Falcao though?

Roon nailed on every week. Falcao not.
Falcao not a sniff at set pieces.
Roon hardest worker in crap team.

Bookmark Roon as finishing season with more fantasy pts than Falcao....deeper role or not.

Palace fans in the house? What's the deal with Zaha? Any reason why he was dropped? What's the deal with the defence these days? Shame that Colin has nullified them as an option.

Adebayor as a captaincy pick for my draft side? Possible returns or no?

      A) Rooney Henderson
      B) Welbeck Tadic -8

      Why am I so tempted?

A for now. I can see the temptation but the risk is not making up those 8 points.

welbeck and tadic are much more exciting or flair picks than roonpig and hendo

        but A seems sensible...

I want to get Aguero in but I don't...I know Pellegrini will most likely manage his minutes but surely Man City's next few PL games are a must win, right?

I think they're capable of beating Hull without him this week.

Hmmm, interesting. Their only other fit striker atm is Dzeko, I'm not sure if there's enough firepower up front.

So do I but there's so many question marks over his head atm. I'm well aware what Aguero is capable of even with limited minutes, for example on his debut he only played 30mins and got 2 goals and an assist.

yeah if you don't own him, I think its wise to wait and see...

this also shows that he doesn't often pick up big hauls away from home usually...although stats aren't everything 🙂
