The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

    Given / Ruddy
    Kompany / Baines / Enrique / O’Shea / Simpson
    Silva / N’Zogbia / Downing / Hoolahan / Marveaux
    Rooney / Suarez / Holt

    OR!!!!

    Given / Ruddy
    Kompany / Collins / Enrique / O’Shea / R.Johnson
    Silva / VDV / Downing / Sessengon / Marveaux
    Bent/ Suarez / Holt

2nd option more rounded, 1st option allows rooney and baines.
Figure I have 3 regular defenders +1 rotator so can have simpson as fodder?
Projection wise Baines and N’Zog should outscore Collins and VDV…

de laet...probably simpson is the best £4.0m defender
wheater...will he play and will bolton get any clean sheets?
        valencia...rotation
        bale...spurs fixtures stink big-style
ben arfa...untested in prem...might be injured...newcastle have lots of new and untested players
        benayoun...rotation
        sinclair...untested...weak team...very tough away matches

Is there much point putting Man U players in at the start. Fair enough they have an ok first game and should score well but then it Arsenal, Tottenham, and Chelsea in the next 4 weeks. Plus with the rotation of both midfield and attack isnt it just worth leaving Man U players alone until week 5????????????

    Thoughts on my team people?

    Given Foster
    Hughes Kompany Bardsley Orr Simpson
    Nzogbia Malouda Moses Sessegon Yaya
    RVP Suarez Zamora

I know it's a lot on keepers but they rotate so well and with the rule change to save points could be worth it.
also not sure on my lack of ManU coverage and Suarez ATM

But it doesn't matter what it used to be last season, you chose Given and Foster based on 3 saves per point, and that is still the case this season, so based on your reasoning, you have no reason to change your keepers.

You should change them anyway, but not because of the fact that you have now found out that last season wasn't 5 saves per point...

Hmm tried to come up with something slightly different (Although yes about 11 players are still very generic)
    Given De Vries
Cole G Johnson Kompany Briggs Simpson
    Moses Tchoyi N'Zogs Malouda
    Rooney Gervinho Zamora

De Vries - think he'll claim first choice and could be good value if he does, if not I don't really mind it's not like I'd ever want to play Ruddy
G Johnson - I know he's expensive but I have a feeling Liverpool will be good value for defense and I could see GJ being pushed up on the right wing to deliver to Carroll
Tchoyi - awful fixtures to start with but I'll play Moses then anyway
Rooney - will switch for Torres/Drogs GW 2/3 then RVP in GW4
Gervinho - Again I just think he'll offer better value than RVP in the Ars attacking line-up. Can see him being an assist machine with goals chucked in too.

    Feedback greatly appreciated.

That feeling of Liverpool defensive solitude needs reevaluating lol. 3 big defenders tactic isn't good to open the season imo.

Far too many risks for my liking. Johnson and Briggs aren't good choices. Gervinho is a poor choice. It's like choosing Walcott, except he'll score striker points which is even worse.

Tchoyi as you said is a risk, and one you can't afford if the other midfielder you're relying on is Moses.

Cheers for the feedback. I was just playing around really, doubt I'd take that many risks into the new season. i guess for each one that pays off others will fail and I'll just lose money.

Because defender rotation is a proven FPL tactic. Having 3 4.0 defenders rotating for 1 spot will yield more points/value than playing 3 7.0+ defenders every week. The value you save will maximize captaincy options.

Proven by who? I think this is incorrect having reseached this using last seasons stats comparing rotating 2 £5m defenders (Hughes and Nelsen who had decent home defensive records and rotated well) compared with just playing Kompany every week (if he had been classed as a defender).

And I started with Hahnemann and Foster last year, whom rotated perfectly, but I got a worse combined score than just playing Foster every week.

The calculations are complicated by the value aspect. Rotating two cheap defenders might yield less point wise, but over the course of the season, the money saved for attacking units could be a huge difference because of captaincy.

If I had captained my highest scoring player every week, I'd have won FPL. Having funds to use on attacking players gave me more reliable captain options.

If i'd have captained my highest scoring player each week I would have won FPL!

Unfortunately due to the lack of time machine I didn't.

In my comparison the value of the players was the same £6m for Kompany + a £4m player that doesn't play versus two £5m players. Of course if you compare rotating 3 £4m players the calculation would be more complex but as the players are weaker I thing the result would be the same. You have got to play at least 3 defenders, why would you want one of them to have a low probability of returning points?

Obv you wouldn't. Moses would be about the cheapest mid I would go for as he looks like he could be a bargain prospect. 3 6m-7m defenders + two 4m ones is not going to break the bank and mean you have to go for Ferguson or Dyer in midfield.

To say that its a proven tactic stretches it a bit, but it does make sense. Playing a rotating defense gives you a lot of flexibility.

Generally speaking, most people prefer to play with 3 defenders, but you have to put 5 in your squad. Using those extra places to enable rotation maximises their usefulness, rather than just having 8.0 sat wasted on the bench. The 2-3 m you save can then make a big difference to your attack.

Is Baines a bit too much of a stretch at 8.0?
I've had him in my side from the first pick (i'm now into like number 6 or so) but I'm starting to think I'm better off getting someone like David Luiz at 6.5, who I'm convinced is going to play a bit further forward for Chelsea this term (lack of Essien etc) and can really strike a ball and thus can be a goalthreat.

    Any thoughts?

I couldn't fit Baines into my team, but I do think he's worth the 8m - most crosses in the league last season (more than any winger), definitely on some free kicks, good chance of being on pens, Everton are traditionally solid at the back.

Cahill is also fit for the start of the season, I think Baines to Cahill was the most common assist / finishing combo last season.

I'd wait to see where Barton goes and wouldn't have Wilshere (Taarabt, Etherington, Pennant, Jarvis all better options imo). He doesn't play very advanced at Arsenal though he is a very good player. Also not sure how often Bardsley will start this season with O'Shea and Brown arriving at Sunderland. Otherwise good.

Ivanovic, Kompany, Enrique (Taylor S) (Briggs)

Unsure how much Ivanovic will start, against weaker teams Ancelotti often played Bosingwa at rb. Who knows what the new boss will do... Also think Newcastle will struggle this season without Barton, Nolan and Carroll - would avoid starting Newcastle players (esp defenders)

I'd be very surprised if he didn't start the 1st game - people have been talking about Torres' £50m price tag but that's not a consideration for Villas-Boas because he didn't sign Torres.

Drogba has always scored as consistently as Rooney/RVP/Tevez when he's played, and is 1.5m cheaper. Looks like a bargain.

      mmmmmm.

You know at 10.5 - yes absolute bargain. However, I'm not sure what system AVB will play just yet - early indications seem to favour 1 in the hole just behind the main striker(s).

So I think he'll play Drog's and Torres together - with a playmaker like Modric / Kaka / Benny just behind them.

If this is the case though Malouda and Lamp's may suffer greatly? Does anyone know what formation AVB played at his old club?

I think he'll probably play Torres and Drogba - even if that means one of them is on the wing. Lampard will surely suffer if playing as a holding midfielder, and looks much too expensive at 12m. Malouda is a tricky one after starting off so well last year but fading massively...

    Hey Everybody!

Foster costing 5mill is a fly in my ointment.

10m just seems pretty pricey for the Given-Foster combo. It would mean I'd have to downgrade Hangeland to Hughes.

That would then give me an even bigger keeper budget so I'm thinking it might be worth getting one of the big guns in.

Man Utd fixtures rotate well with Swansea and Wigan, so De Gea + Al-Habsi or the Swansea keeper (whoever that's going to be)?

De Gea and Al-Habsi would be 11m. That also seems a bit steep.

So I've had another look at budget options.

Foster looks a great shout again, and could work well with Ruddy or Al-Habsi.

    Foster + Ruddy =

wig STK STK WBA swa FUL sun WOL avl BLA avl BOL QPR qpr WIG bla wol TOT FUL qpr...

    Foster + Al-Habsi =

NOR swa STK nor swa FUL sun WOL new FUL wol BOL sun qpr WIG bla new MCY stk SUN...

I wouldn't go near Ruddy if you're thinking of rotating keepers. If you do you have at least pick Kenny as your cheapie.
      But Foster + Kenny = 9.5m
      Given + Foster = 10m so it's clearly a better option with 0.5m more.
The thing is if it a better option than De Gea or Hart with a cheapie (without rotating them)

I think that Ivanovic is better option than Terry, not because you save 0.5 but he scores and assists more often. I know that it is risky in terms of rotation but it could pay really well.
I think that Aguero is not a good option yet. We have to see his role in the team first. I would pick Caroll or Suarez if he is available for the first match.

Ok a couple of thoughts. What do you think about these two points?

    1. Does the combo Given/Foster worth 10m (they rotate excellent) and both are capable of save points regardless Clean Sheets. Or is it a better option to get a one of them and a cheapie and only play him only as an emergency?

    2. GWs 2, 3 & 4 are tough for Arsenal and Man Utd. I know the theory of fixtureproof players but is it a better option to ignore RVP and Rooney and start with a combo Caroll and Bent and use the 2 million to upgrade Malouda to Lampard as he is an obvious captain candidate for GWs 2 and 3?
