The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

Afternoon people. Thoroughly looking forward to another FPL season. Have picked the following so far. Looks solid to me....

    Given
    Orr Alex Baird
    VDV(v) N'Zogbia Taarabt Malouda
    Holt Zamora RVP(c)

    Bench: Foster Dunne Simpson Sinclair

    Thoughts?

I am going for Given and Foster too, 10m isn't much to spend on two quality keepers for me, so good choice there.

Your defence is a bit of a liability though. Orr is untested and unproven in the Premier League, and while this is not fatal the presence of Sinclair/Taarabt and Holt mean that you potentially have four Jiminez' or SEB's in your team like last season, you could of course also have four Carroll's, but that remains to be seen, it's a risk going in with 4 unproven dudes in my view, and this is coming from me doing the exact same thing last season and then being stuck with Jiminez/SEB/Boselli etc for weeks after.

Alex is not a guaranteed starter with Luiz and Ivanovic floating around, Dunne and Simpson are solid picks, Baird could be downgraded to Briggs if he continues to play and play OOP for that matter.

Midfield is sweet, difficulty in having VDV and Malouda is that 20m is sewn up right there, I would do without VDV for the first 4-5 weeks personally, his fixtures are tough and he is carrying a knock now, and we all know he is prone to injury.

Zamora/RVP/Malouda/Taarabt/N'Zogbia I agree with, suggest downgrading VDV to the likes of O'Hara or Seesegnon or Moses and upgrading defence, you need some Man City cover I think.

    Kenny
    Cole Kompany Baines
    Taraabt Silva Nzogbia Moses
    Drogba RVP Holt
    subs Given Simpson Orr Ferguson

Defence – Three quality players in FPL terms , all will score more BPs this season judging by EA Actim statistics of last season.
Midfield – Expecting big things from Silva, Taraabt and Nzogbia.
Forwards – RVP is essential no matter what the fixtures. I fancy Drogba to get the nod ahead of Torres in the first two games, and Drogba had a great start to last season when things were going his way. Will be changing him to Suarez in GW3

Play unles they sign somebody which seems increasingly unlikely.

The problem with his is though, whilst he is good value for an Arsenal defender, Arsenal aren't going to keep many clean sheets and he won't get many assists/goals compared to similar value players.

I'm tempted by Kyle Walker of Spurs after they have got their first few tough gameweeks over and done with. He is also £5.5m and offers really good attacking potential.

Do Sunderland fans think that Wes Brown will be in the starting 11 this season?

There was an interesting article in The Times yesterday where Bruce was signing his praises from the rooftops which indicates he has bought him to play him ahead of Turner or Bramble.

At £4.5m he could be a really good shout for a rotation place if Sunderland have a good gameweek fixture.

I worked out by going for a cheap defender from wigan, newcastle and sunderland, so total cost is 4+4.5+4.5 = 13M, for the opening 15 weeks fixtures are

    NOR-NEW-FUL-qpr-STK-BLA-WBA-BOL-WIG-FUL-EVE-FUL-WIG-wol-BLA

If you can get through the first two weeks (the easiest time to get through seeing as you've just picked your team from scratch), then it's tough to beat Wilkinson and Simpson for sheer, rotating, budget value.

Great plan until Bramble scores two own goals and gets red carded.

I wouldn't just go for 2 big (playing every game) and 3 cheap (only one playing each week) as it doesn't cover you when one of your big boys has a tough fixture.

A Fulham defender fits in perfectly with the rest of my back 5 in rotate terms. And De Gea and Foster a both good options who rotate well with my back-up - Al-Habsi.

Don't like Given's rotation with anyone but Foster, and he's too expensive for me to have Hangeland.

I guess that means Foster +

Hey guys any help on my team would be greatly appreciated.

    Given (Foster)
Kompany, A Cole, Agger (Orr) (S Taylor)
    Moses, Dempsey, Tchoyi, Taarabt (Sessegnon)
    Zamora, Bent, Aguero

    Any help would be great.

Personally I think my midfield is too weak and also I'm not sure about Agger, I just think he might start regularly and Liverpool were good as keeping clean sheets last season when Dalglish was there.

Don't you want to wait a GW or 2, before you waste so much money on Aguero??? He may not even start at first.

Love your midfield minus Moses, but another heavy hitter along-side dempsey woulf be good.

Your defense is nice, would switch Baines with Cole but just my opinion.

I like it and like the distribution. Nani might recapture last season's form, but even so is going to be at risk of reduced pitchtime with Valencia and Young in contention.

Bothroyd is a major gamble and not worth it in my book.

So I'd upgrade him and downgrade Nani. Plenty of good midprice midfielders available.

    Given/Kenny
    Baines/Cole/Kompany/Warnock/Hughes
    Malouda/Silva/Sinclair/Tchoyi/Moses
    Bent/Zamora/Holt

Only a few friendlies and an international between now and kick-off so probably will only make a few changes.

Is Gordon nailed on number 1? I am not sure, don't think BAE is worth the outlay with Spurs opening fixtures, suggest you get a cheaper defender and upgrade Kelly to a Chelsea defender.

Nasri, meh, I am not sure I would want him with the discontent he has shown, Bale I don't rate as a fantasy prospect, Ben Arfa is injured, Suarez may not play the first game, and if he does, he may still be tired from the Copa America, Pav, ugh, just no.

I applaud your individualism, but, that is not a great team.

Ben Arfa is injured. There's a good chance that none of your front 3 will start GW1. Nasri's future is still up in the air, Young won't play every game, Gordon is not definitely Sunderland's no 1 keeper, Kelly isn't nailed on.

Yeah, it needs a bit of work.

Will be getting another defender and striker I'm sure by the end of the transfer window but I'm loving our signings this summer, doing very good business.

Think we should be alright in terms of staying up, we have a better squad than a number of teams who will be lingering around the bottom half imo.

Olsson is our best defender and easily the most nailed on, no coincidence last season when he did his achilles we went into freefall.

I like it, bar two Newcastle defenders is major overkill, they really struggled to keep clean sheets last year, while Simpson is cheaper, Taylor does offer a goal threat, so for an additional .5, you may decide that Taylor is the man.

Not sure if YaYa will have the same impact this season, but I have no basis for this hypothesis, very solid midfield otherwise, love Bent and Carroll up front, Sturridge hasn't gone out on loan yet, if he does, that's a great and different strike force, if he doesn't, look to Zamora or Rodallega.

Thanks. Simpson will usually be my last sub. Just a regular 4m defender that has allowed me to spend on other players. Again same principle for Ephraim, cheap 4.5m midfielder who should start regularly now that Routledge has departed.
