The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

I made that mistake, not having Bale based on his season-ending form of the year before.

There's no such thing as a dreadful team yet.. unless you pick players who definitely won't play. If Nani scored 2 with Bent and RvP grabbing hat tricks, it would be the team of GW1.

Any team that isn't the generic RMT gets shot down, it's bullsh*t i say.

Not the prettiest team I've seen around here.

In a (fit) LFC midfield of Adam, Henderson, Downing, Meireles, Lucas, Aquilani (who was good against Valarenga) - Maxi shouldn't start. And that's assuming Kuyt plays forward.

Nani's a decent shout, but I have a feeling Young will start ahead of him for GW1.

It'll be Ameobi/Best to partner Ba, assuming NUFC play 2 upfront - so another risk there.

And 2 SAFC defenders? What's with that?

I think there's little value in Rafael unless he really nails down a regular start...remember he's got his brother and Jones to compete with...and ManU start with rough fixtures so I'd look elsewhere

        stoke have tough fixtures

n'zogbia and probably albrighton should be way better than ireland who might not play much

He should start if we play 4-4-2 (or a variation of that with 2 strikers). Bit of chat that he might be going to PSG, but wait and see on that. We usually play 4-4-2 unless we're against one of the top sides away from home.

A question about ridiculously cheap defenders I see keep cropping up in peoples team (Orr, Briggs, Wilkinson..) Are all of these nailed on starters? Why are people selecting them aside from throwing the teams balance to a strong 4-3-3 etc. I dont understand it fully, have I missed a trick with these defenders?

None of those are nailed on imo. Peeps taking a punt on Briggs because he's been oop in mf preseason, playing well and only £4m Chances are he won't start though.

Balance is not a good thing in FPL. It's something that the casual player doesn't understand.

Captaincy makes the game skewed towards choosing players who regularly score highly.

Balance is not a good thing in FPL? I cant say I agree. Id sooner have 15 players who will rotate well so the greater score is through combined totals, not a constant 11 who I would have to assume never get injured.

Your bench can consist of 4.0 defenders and a 4.5 bench sitter who can sub in for emergencies.

A balanced team in my opinion is one where there are several different price points.

          Like this:

          5.0, 4.0
          7.5, 6.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
          10.5, 9.5, 6.5, 6.0, 4.5
          12.0, 10.0, 5.5

That's a balanced team in my opinion. Value wasted on the bench is value wasted on the starting XI. It doesn't mean the rest of your team is expendable, because there are options down there.

QPR good opening fixtures, Orr or Gabbidon make sense. I personally HOPE that Briggs can force his way into Jol's starting 11, making him a snip at 4.0m. Did the same with Coleman from the start last season and that worked out well.

They will be starting for their respective teams, so offer good value for bench warmers, as you know they will be getting points when they do come on. Providing they don't concede an awful lot.

Keith - if you're still here... glad you remembered the fixture groups I made from last year and very pleased you found it useful! I have done one for this season (IAmMeireles has posted something similar on here this season too), though the fixtures don't fall into such nice groups which is a shame. For anyone who hasn't seen this before, you can divide the fixtures into groups so that a team who is home one week is away the next. The advantage of this is that if you have a cheap defender who does well at home but poorly away, you can easily see which clubs to look at to buy a rotatable defender with him.

For example, you have a cheap and effective QPR defender. To find a player who complements him, you should look at the opposite group - in GW1-2 QPR are group B and 3-4 they are group A. So you would look for a group A then group B club (such as Swansea).

At the start of the season, the groups change regularly so it's not too useful. However, come later in the season (GW13-20, for example) they are far more stable. This will be most useful for planning ahead then.

The fixture groups are in the spreadsheet below):

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0Ao3N_1L6b4i_dDcyU0lFQ1BxV0VzLVdTOFVzQy1DMlE&output=html

Bookmarked! I found your version last season really useful for planning purposes, especially early on. Later on players like Djourou, Coleman, Baines were good picks whatever the fixtures, and you could discount defenders from some teams due to their chronic lack of clean sheets.

Arsenal can't get a single decent centre-back to sign and you lot go and get 2 lads in Jones & Smalling who could become seriously good

Winger & CF (same team) approach; what do people think of having a team containing all of:

    Silva & Aguerro
    Downing & Carroll
    N'Zog & Bent

Doubling on Wigan is probably not a good idea.

Ferguson is not a good choice seeing as he'll not even play and will just go down in value.

Go for Bramble. He's there to rotate with Simpson.

Right then guys, sneijder!!! There is a strong possibility that he'll be plying his trade in the English Prem this coming season. Would his arrival cause any major alterations in your respective teams?

Also, how much do you think he'll be...up there with fat Frank or more around the Silva mark?!?!?

Won't be changing my side at all - United's fixtures are tough and he needs time to gel...

As for price - Aguero was £40m and costs £11m on that basis Sneijder could be between £10-11m

Thanks to reading through posts and taking in comments i have produced a new team! Just looking for some thoughts guys!

    Given(Ruddy)
    Luiz-Kompany-Alcaraz(Distin)(Knight)
    N’Zogbia-Wilshere-Malouda-Silva(Moses)
    Suarez-Bent-Holt

i think it's a well rounded team, i wasn't sure if Knight starts for Bolton or not but i put him in just now anyway. Alcaraz will start GW1 then be switched for Distin.

    Anyone got an opinion.

    Thanks

    Few queries

1)cant decide whether to go with ACole or spend 0.5 extra and bag baines, or save 1m and down grade cole to luiz

2)all these new mf's of newly promoted clubs are doing my head in, i mean 6 and 6.5m for untested premier league experience worries me
    - is sinclair on penos
    - who's on peno's for QPR

3)are silva and nzobia enough as your biggest midfielders (there are so many rotation risks for the big hitters)

    4)aguero - yes or no

    so many questions

      1) Bank the 0.5, have Cole for stk WBA NOR and then Baines for AVL WIG
      2) Very tough to pick a solid midfield as there are so few standout bargains. Two options are spend a fortune on tried and trusted or take an absolute gamble around the 6 mark. Few worth having below 6, and the one who was first on my teamsheet (HBA) is injured. Bugger.
      3) Probably.
      4) I say yes, but I can understand why people are reluctant. Fancy a massive punt? Go for Dzeko.

      1) I had Baines until recently but switched him to Ivanovic. Chelsea have better games than Everton, are a better team with more chance for CS and I'm not 100% certain if Baines will be taking set-pieces. (Probably penalties, but free-kicks maybe not with Arteta back)

      2) Sinclair and Taarabt are on penalties for Swansea/QPR.

      3) Might be a bit on the cheap-side having those 2 as your expensive mids. Maybe get Malouda and Silva?

      4) Not yet. Wait and see.

1 - I went with Luiz, spread the wealth across the whole team

      2 - I've got both Taarabt(Pens) and Sinclair(Pens) as they rotate Home/Away perfectly.

3 - I have both Malouda and silva... but this is becuase I don't have either teams striker.

4 - a risk.. new player new league... added to the fact tevez is still there... all in all not for me.

I managed a respectable finish last season without Baines or A.Cole and I have neither in my team this year. You can do wonders with your midfield withougt them.

My starting lineup in midfield is currently
silva, downing, malouda, VDV. I think that combination will outscore Baines/Coles points over the season provided they stay fit.

Tarrabt I think is on penalties for QPR.

I feel your pain in the third question - it is hard to find good value from midfield without either spending big or taking a gamble.

Aguero - Wait and see. Too much can change before the start of the season with Tevez Etoo etc for anyone to be able to give you a definite answer.

      1) I'd prefer Baines or Luiz to A Cole.

      2) Sinclair is on pens for Swansea, Taarabt for QPR - that's partly why they are so popular on here.

      3) Probably, there's not much value in the big midfielders.

      4) Depends on the Tevez situation - the Charity Shield might give us some hints.

You've probably gone now, but no, I can't quite fit Baines in. Still think he's a good pick, though.

I've gone for Malouda for Chelsea cover (and Luiz at the back) - will try to get Lamps in later in the season when I've built up some team value.
