The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

They have lots of interseting prospects/fannies at good prices actually,

        Jarvis 6.0 m, Hunt 6.0 m, Fletcher 6.5 m.

I can see them finishing 12th + this year.

    Mignolet - Ruddy
Orr, Baines, Kompany, hughes - Simpson
Silva, Downing, Tarabbt - Sinclair, Moses
    Rooney, Bent, Zamora

Plan on bringing odemwingie in GW3, Bent -> Suarez on return and having Sinclair ply his trade from GW2 over Orr.
    Thoughts?

I would maybe downgrade one forward and upgrade one defender.

You have 3 defenders who are not likely to get you many points.
It's OK to have 2 maybe if they rotate their fixtures well, but 3 is a big gamble for me.

The rest of the team looks strong.

Yes, but a risk. Less risk than Holt, but forwards tend to be all or none. For that risk, I'd rather have more flexibility in my midfield and upgrade the defense.

Not much for FPL. For United the only safe picks are Vidic and Rooney, everyone else will be rotated to buggery.
On top of that the defence might be a little more unsettled as they have a new keeper, sometimes takes a few weeks to gel.

I would say that is a manager bigging up his new signing and publicly giving him confidence. Probably see him feature in cup games or as a late substitution.

Interesting on Young though - although he will still have competition from Nani, Park and Obertan who can all play wide left.

Wait and see still I would say.

Ummm no, he's got a different positional arc than his brother and I fear (because I have Raf) he will see more overall minutes. He will be played OOP for the majority of the season, fashioned similar to "The Matrix" aka Ji-Sung Park. He is more or less Man U's utility infielder (baseball term). Fabio has and will line up as a wing, hold mid, hybrid attacking-advanced holding mid. SAF is fashioning him like Park as their Gattuso...which fit's Fabio's football personality. He has license to get forward but still appears risky due to rotation and lack of finishing luck/polish.

    Is Ashley Cole worth 7.5?

His fixtures are good, and Villas-Boas likes attacking wing backs which suite Cole perfectly. If you include him in your team it's with the plan of playing him every week.

However...7.5 is a lot for a defender, he's unlikely to pick up much bonus, and he had a very low scoring patch when Chelsea were doing poorly last year. For 1.5m less you can get a City defender, can that 1.5m be better spent to upgrade an attacking player? You're not going to captain Cole, but you might captain that player you just spent an extra 1.5m on.

same... i think luiz will start above alex all day. AVB like attacking centre backs who can go forward and score from corners and alex's onlt attacking quality is his ability to ram home 2 free kicks a season

AVB plays similar to Jose in the fact he likes a CB to join all attacks (Carvalho did this in the JM era) - Luiz is perfect for this, plus I swear I read Alex is subject to interest from Juventus.

The whole Chelsea team were low scoring during their dip in form, as for not getting bonus, the bonus will now be based strictly on the EA Sports Index, which is a brother of the OPTA index, which Cole scored in the top 10 in almost every category for a defender, so I would say bonus might be more likely, as they will be for Evra I think this season, often ignored completely.

I personally think he is worth it, and have decided against very expensive defenders every season, only to move for one within the first few weeks and regretting not moving sooner.

It's too much of a risk at this point.

He'll only be training 3 days with Chelsea before the start of the season. I also expect him to be Chelsea's starting CB, but if I were AVB, I'd play Bosingwa, Terry, Ivanovic, Cole first week and give Luiz a rest until the week after. Can't afford for him not to play first week.

        You can always downgrade later.

Who are you going for from Chelsea then Camzy? Are you looking at Cole or are you avoiding their defence altogether until we can determine who is going to start week in week out?

Amen... I feel sorry for the Toon army... Ashley is slowly killing that club from the inside... 1st Nolan, now Barton for goodness sake!

As for the league start - would save me tinkering with my bloody FF team!

i more like 2nd, because of stronger midfield, however bent is very good option too, but Dempsy's form is poor, and Maloudas too, maby you should go for Kuyt or something?

    What do you think?

I am not sure about N'Zog because Alex Meclish's deffansive tactic, and about Odemwingie because his first season was goob but can he repeat it? Any suggestions?

Any mad gamblers going for Dzeko? If he hits form he could do well, big if though. Dzeko flanked by Tevez and Aguero would be a helluva strike force.

If nasri goes to man city how does this effect silva and your plans. At the moment i have silva as he seems to be the only clear, nailed on attacking option for city. If they get nasri too i might just get him instead but do they both play together or is it just more rotation???

newcastle now have cabaye and marveaux so more depth but lose Barton. Who knows, but at 4.5 if u can upgrade to Moses or Faurlin from QPR u r probably better off.

Having a midfielder with a value of less tahn 5 is a mistake imo, and even looking at that range, 5.5 is the minimum I will fork out for a spot im mf. But always planning to play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3.

    Al Habsi

    Vidic, Terry, Kompany

    Silva, Nani, Taarabt, Moses, N'Zogbia

    Drogba, Zamora

Subs - Given, Biggs, De Laet, Graham.

Got 2 each from Utd, City and Chelsea. Vidic and Terry expensive but guaranteed starters until it becomes clear whether Alex/Luiz play and who is regular RB for Utd.

Suarez or Aguerro can come in for Drogba early September?
