The chase is on for Joey Barton’s signature. Owen Coyle tries out a new formation as Darren Pratley and Chris Eagles impress again. Swansea look set to grab another winger. Ben Foster comes in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Stewart Downing crosses, Andy Carroll scores- that’s a phrase you may be hearing plenty of next season. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

The race is on to snap up Joey Barton following yesterday’s extraordinary events at Newcastle. Released on a free transfer despite having a year of his contract remaining, Barton will have no shortage of suitors as he looks around for a new club this summer. The player’s agent, Willie McKay, has already had plenty of enquiries:

We have been inundated with interest. We’re talking to top Premier League clubs and European clubs. One is very, very interested. I’ve got nothing against Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias. They can do what they want but I think it’s suicide what they’ve done.

Names such as Tottenham and Everton have been suggested as most likely and providing Barton can join a club where regular starts are a given, he’s still very much a viable Fantasy prospect, priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Talking of free transfers, Wigan have signed up ex Wolves man David Jones. The midfielder was released by Big Mick McCarthy’s side in the summer and has been training with the Latics over the last few days. Roberto Martinez has said:

‘David is a talented player. He is technically gifted and tactically clever.’

Bolton’s friendly game at Hereford last night saw Owen Coyle try out a new formation which may intrigue Fantasy managers. Coyle went with a 4-2-3-1 shape, playing Chris Eagles and Martin Petrov on the flanks, with Mark Davies behind lone forward Kevin Davies. The second half saw Darren Pratley replace Mark Davies and both he and Eagles scored in the game, as the visitors coasted 3-0. Bolton lost eleven of their last twelve away games in 2010/11 and a change in shape, particularly for games on the road, may prove to be wise by Coyle.

Liverpool came back from 2-0 down Valerenga last night to eventually draw 3-3. Stewart Downing supplied the cross for Andy Carroll to fire home from close range and a Daniel Agger brace reminded Fantay managers of his scoring capabilities. Kenny Dalglish’s side were poor in the first-half but bossed the second forty-five and in the end, threw away a lead in injury time. The Reds boss said after the game:

“It was obviously more pleasing in the second half, we were closing down higher up the pitch. In the first half we stood off. They wanted time to play and we gave them time to play. The important thing is we’ve got to be better when we don’t have the ball – but the boys aren’t shy of hard work. There’s an educated week’s training ahead.”

Swansea have agreed a deal with Newcastle to sign Wayne Routledge. The winger will undergo a medical today and providing there are no hiccups, will sign on at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year deal. Although it bolsters Brendan Rodgers’ squad, it seems unlikely that Routledge will be no more than back-up to Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer on the wings in Swansea’s 4-3-3, unless the Swans boss is looking at a change in formation.

Yuri Zhirkov looks set to become the first player to leave Chelsea since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. Having weighed up his squad on their recent tour of Asia, the Blues boss is moving quickly to implement his squad restructuring plans and Zhirkov’s sale is the first step in what looks to be a busy month ahead.

If certain reports are to be believed, Fulham are eyeing up Cameron Jerome as the Birmingham summer sale shows no sign of ending soon. The move, if it transpires, seems a strange one- Bobby Zamora looks a nailed-on starter for the Cottagers, with Andy Johnson and Moussa Dembele fighting it out for the other forward place. Jerome’s arrival would cast doubts over the club’s strike-pairing under Martin Jol, which would not be good news for Fantasy managers. Another forward at the club would further decrease Clint Dempsey’s chances of playing as a makeshift striker on occasion next term, too.

Ben Foster has been added to the FPL game with a starting price of 5.0. Foster’s new club West Brom chalked up a mere 2 clean sheets last term and his presence between the sticks will boost that tally, without question. Foster proved last season, despite being relegated with Birmgham, that a keeper in a struggling team can provide plenty points even if clean sheets don’t come his way. Mark has pointed out in an article last week that Foster rotates with Shay Given all the way to game week 17, though with a combined Fantasy price of 10.0, this may prove too costly for some.

I hate to think what your two bench players are, oh and your defence. But it looks good, not sure Toure is worth the 8.0m, I'd much rather take a punt on someone at 6.5m and spend the extra else where.

I decided to spend more money in my front line and in my defence, because of rotation risk. A.Cole, Briggs and Kompany form the defence line in front of Given.

My foward players are mainly choosen for consistancy, goaltread and penalty duty: Rooney, Bent and Aguero.

My midfield is filled up with unexperienced players either new in their team or unprooven in the premier league. Taabart, N'Zogbia, Moses, Sessegnon and Sinclair. Dispite of their success last year I'm still a bit shaky about their perfomance. Most of my first choises Silva, Toure, Nani or VDV are priced 10m, and would weaken the rest of the team.

Do you think I made the right choise?

Is Riise going to be bringing back his famous long throw for Fulham???? Anyone seen one of Fulham's pre-season friendlies ?? Is he doing it Delap-style??? If so, surely makes Hangeland a bit of a better option??

I can't believe Riise is 6.0 in the FPL game, just seems like a ridiculous valuation for him, Hangeland at 6.5, fair enough, but Riise is just back to the Premier League, and is no spring chicken, that valuation bothers me more than most for some reason, purely because there are now 6m+ defenders in the Fulham backline now, at a time where they have a more attack minded coach in Jol.

Agree that Hangeland is a much better option, although Riise can hit a belter of a free kick, ask Alan Smith.

I have a feeling Riise is going to be one of those players where he does well and I think "argh but he is expensive and I can't see him scoring again" and then he does and then I still never get him in and then he costs me the league

(like Laursen from Aston Villa a few seasons back)

Laursen was a beauty at 5.0 at the start of the season that year. 6.0 to me still seems too rich for my blood, I just see no valid Riison why he is priced at 6.0.

      Don't get on it.

It's not a particularly good bandwagon imo. If you get Hughes, you'll be playing him every week for the first 5, and Fulham aren't the tightest at the back. Then there's the fact he offers little bonus or goal threat.

Problem with that is if chelsea conceed... you are liable to get 2-4 points depending on saves... whereas Cole will still get the 2 + potential for assists and goals in chelseas opening fixtures I think its better value for an extra 0.5m

Failing that go for Luiz at 6.5m

Someone going up in price or who has a better set of fixtures.

Cole could make way for Clichy or Evra or Vidic or simply Luiz to save a few funds.

You also get offensive points which the goalies can't provide. The get saves, but cheaper goalies also put up saves.

And yet Cech constantly outscores Cole. Would you seriously consider dumping Cech because another keeper is going up in value!?!

              lol, true dat.

But since when did Cech constantly outscore Cole? If Chelsea keep a clean sheet they both gain points, if CHelsea get trashed they both lose points. Save points are important but usually are only 1 or 2 pts per match, whereas an assist is 3pts and a goal is 6 - that's the equivalent of 18 saves.

What it really comes down to is Cech + Collins vs. Given + Cole.

It also depends how they interact with the rest of your defence. I want 2 big defenders to start this year with 3 rotating cheapies. If I go with Cech in goal that leaves a massive hole in my defence.

But if you are getting Cech over Cole, then you have the Chelsea defence covered, and it is not leaving a massive hole? Cech is the cheapest nailed on starting Chelsea defender, the ifs, buts and maybes of potential assists and goals are no substitute for a player who will play every game and is less likely to get injured, I currently have Cole, but am seriously thinking of Cech now.

Exactly JU. TBH i'm not decided either but the fact Cech has outscored Cole for the past 4 seasons is a massive pull

But with just Kompany and 4 rotatables, you have to play 2/4 one of your dodgey defenders. With 2 solid defenders you only have to play 1/3, which means you get more choice over who plays.

This kinda assumes that your cheap goalies combined will score as much as Cech, but it does make sense.

You say he is MUCH cheaper, but really, is he ?? I'm going to take it he is 6.5m just incase he is, I think hes 7m though.

So you have Cech and another keeper for 10.5m, With the other keeper being a cheapy 4m geaser, that you're not ever going to play, so essentially, you are wasting 4m. But say you got the Given Al-Habsi combination, you are spending less (9.5m) and are getting your money's worth with rotating fixtures/two decent keepers.

Then you have an extra 1m, or 1.5m, to spend on your defence, so instead of say having Riise at 6m, you can grab Cashley at 7.5m....

As long as you rotate your keepers as and when, and generally pick the correct keeper, thats the best way to do it, unless you are an uber keeper lover and get Given and Cech.

        He is 7 mil.

Agree with the post below, spending big on keepers is not usually good because the big-team keepers usually make far less saves than say a mid-table team like Aston Villa, and only get 4 or 5 more CS in a season

He doesn't actually get that many save points due to Chelsea's great defence. Look at the stats from last year - he got 98 save points compared to Foster's 178!

It's a tricky one... If you go Cech then you play him every single week and you pretty certain of 150+ pts for the season. The good thing is you don't need to think. Just set and forget.

If you get two rotating 4.5m keepers and are lucky then you could get all their good games and a combined score of eg. 200pts.

He was signed in January i think, supposed to be Blackburn's main playmaker but ended up not playing at all for some unknown reason. He has done well in preseason, but is still relatively untested, so most people will be looking to see how he does in first few weeks before deciding

I see him as the cheapest way into the chelsea midfield at 7.0 and even though he carries a rotation risk his pre season has been good and in the past he has proven he can work with torres who is the future at chelsea (as much as I like drogba he is 33).

Another week another RMT for me. Here's the latest draft.

    Given - Ruddy

    A Cole - Kompany - Hughes - Bramble - Simpson

    Malouda - Downing - O Hara - Taraabt - Moses

    RVp - Bent- Holt

Hughes - bramble and simpson rotate well for the third defender slot.

And Moses and Holt rotate well for the first month or so. Happy to play the rest week in week out for the first few weeks.

Taraabt can easily become sinclair if it doesn't work out.

    Appreciate any thoughts.

I do plan to play ohara at blackburn. Be gutting if Holt runs riot, but Ohara is proven class against a weak side (blackburn are ok at home, but ultimately weak)

Moses is at home against a new side and Holt is an unknown, and away.

O hara and Moses swing it for me.

The following week young Moses will sit out.

Ohara will play. He's proven prem quality.. I think he is a great shout for 6m.

If your big gambles are Moses - Holt and O Hara then you are in a great position.

I've seen all sorts of rubbish on this site about people going on about how good N Dyer is or what a prospect Orr is.

If they take penalties or free kicks etc and have prem experience then they are far less of a gamble.

What's everyone's views on 3 big attackers and 1 big midfielder vs 2 big attackers and 2 big midfielders? You can't seem to get 3 big attackers AND 2 big mids without crippling your defence, but 3 + 1 or 2 + 2 is doable with a couple of defenders you'll play every week.

At the moment I'm seeing more value in the big attackers than the big midfielders.

    Here this for confusing,

My insurance for my car is cheaper for me ( a 20 yr old with no no claims) with my dad as a named driver, than it is for him (20 years no claims) and me on it.

    Strange! cant figure it out.

Imagine someone shoving a stick up your ass. And you're like "why are you doing this?" But they never give you a reason. And just when you think it won't go any further, they give it a push. And it's illegal for you to stop them doing it.

I think that's how it works.

Its the way of the world Enrique. Car insurance is cheaper with a moreexperienced named driver, and sticks will be shoved up your arse from now until the day you die.

The systems rate on the young driver if it may look like a fronted policy and loads the price up accordingly. If you're policyholder having your dad on the policy lessens your risk. Try another experienced driver as well and it may go down again...

Are you saying if you have insurance you cant crash? Why not just pay for the damage yourself? Why pay money to people incase something happens, why not keep the money you would have paid to them and use it if you crash? Also, just dont crash, that'd solve it. Insurance is yet another scam forced upon us by the capitalist swine that is the government, I for one have no faith in the establishment, VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

Cheers for both your comments. However I don't understand where all this Malouda love is coming from. Lampard is in form and is guaranteed starts and the members projections predict that he will both out-score and out-start Malouda. Plus I think he is a safer bet, until the dust begins to settle at the Bridge and we can see what VB is thinking.

        A) Baines + Kompany
        or

Hey guys, i'm having a bit of a dilemma. I hope you can all help me out.

I know theres a lot of talk about Keepers / Defence rotations and stuff like that - so here is what i am currently thinking about.

    Basically, i'm considering

    Hart / 4.0 mil Keeper

Samba / Luiz / Huth (Orr, Simpson)

My thinking is, these are 3 good center backs to have, as not only may they collect clean sheets, but also are all big threats going forward. I don't have many issues with Luiz - i'm pretty certain he will start, at least for the first few months until champions league kicks in.

    My other thought is

    Foster / Given

Kompany / Luiz / Huth (Orr, Simpson)

Which also gives me an extra million to play with. Which allows me to upgrade Shitty Dyer to Moses (a fan favourite at the moment) and i could either keep the extra 0.5 mil i nthe bank, or strengthen either Orr or Simpson if i wanted too.

I know it seems quite trivial, but i just wondered what you all thought. My instincts are to have a solid backline of goalscorers, as to me, Kompany is good value for 6 mil but never gets forward, so having Hart would cover that and allow me to bring in other defenders that may score the goals.

Thanks for reading this, i genuinely believe that when this is sorted, my team will be ready 🙂

I'm thinking of taking a punt on R Johnson. I know he's at Wolves, but I can see him getting bps and the odd goal. Too risky? Would I be better of with Hughes who should get more cleanies?

I agree that he is a punt.

Personally, I prefer to start the season with as few new signings as possible, so I probably won't be going for him just yet.

Having said that, he has a lot of premiership experience and considering the type of players that are under 7.5m, he may not be such a risk.

There you go, balanced view, but absolutely no insight!
