Our next Members article looking at the idea of “value” sees Forwards come under the microscope. With a fresh revision of players last weekend in light of factors such as transfers and pre-season tactics, we’ve tweaked the Projected totals to give you an up-to-date reflection on our thinking. While many of our top ten value forwards are lower-priced options that perhaps may be more suited to rotation, the kind opening prices afforded to the likes of Luis Suarez and Peter Odemwingie propels a couple of FPL big-hitters firmly into our thoughts.
OK, anybody in agreement:
Moses could be a bargain, but my problem with putting him in my team is that if he flops there are no other players for the same price who are worth putting in.
Sinclair seems like a safe bet.
I think I'm going to go for Eagles instead of Moses at first for my budget midfielder, then if Moses comes good I can downgrade and get myself a little more money to play with.Open Controlsa) Moses, Silva & Carroll
b) O'Hara, N'Zogbia & SuarezOpen ControlsI changed to (a) this morning...

2 points regarding projections.
First, bonus points. Do we know enough about the EA formula to accurately predict BPs? Is it possible to see data for last season and work out how BPs would have been distributed in specific games?
The scout projections seem fairly confident on BP predictions, but the criteria seem very last season...
Second, value for money might be better expressed as value for additional money. Which varies from position to position. That is, there's a base price for a team of 4*2+4*5+4.5*5+5*5=75.5 it's then just down to where to invest the additional 24.5. Therefore the cost of spending 6m on a defender is actually twice as much as 6m for a forward. Likewise it might be worth considering the base points and focusing on additional points scored/projected. That is, you get 74pts just for playing every game. It's the points in excess of this that are worth something.
Otherwise we might as well all pick Phil Neville, Gareth Barry, Darren Fletcher and Charlie Adam.Open ControlsShould be 4*2+4*5+4.5*5+5*3=65.5

Camzy, since you are online, can you please give me an input on my team? Thanks.
Kenny, Given (rotate v.well)
Kompany, Terry, Rangel, Orr, Simpson
Malouda, Toure, Taarabt, Sinclair, Moses
RVP, Holt, Carroll(maybe Bent from GW2)
p.s. Any other comments welcomedOpen ControlsYou caught me on my last legs for today.
Great team on the whole. I changed Kenny to Al-Habsi in my team simply to avoid doubling on QPR defense. Like the fact you have Terry in there, could be great.
Bit worried at how many gambles you're taking in midfield. Toure won't be a big point scorer week in, week out, and that's what you need from a midfield mainstay. I'd choose one of Sinclair and Taarabt, and switch the other to a more proven player.
You're very close though to having a super team ready for the start.Open Controls
Taarabt - Albrighton - Etherington
Help me pick two of those three...I can't afford N'Zogbia. Unless Moses tears up, then I'll sell my cover for him and get Zog.Open ControlsI would prefer Albrighton and Taarabt
Open ControlsTaarabt, Albrighton no doubts. I wouldn`t even go near Ethers with the fixs they have,
Open ControlsHrm. I could trade in K. Davies for Grant Holt and then buy N'Zogbia. I already have Rooney & RVP up front so I should be covered if he doesn't perform...I didn't watch a single game he featured in last season, but I know he tore the Championship up, do people expect him to do well in the Prem though?
Open ControlsDEFINETLY drop K.Davies!!!!

Thoughts?
Given (Moreira)
Cole A Kompany Hughes (Simpson, Wilkinson)
Malouda Wilshere N'Zogbia Arteta (Johnson)
Rooney Carroll (Holt)Open ControlsArteta will probably miss the start of the season
Open ControlsNooice team. If Enrique goes to pool you could consider him for Hughes - although many would argue avoid liverpool defenders but I think that is a bit last season. Arteta - nah, may miss the start and pretty much did squat last season. Wilshere's potential depends on what happens with personnel at the Arsenal
Open Controls
camzy why do you think baines is not worth it:
- 100% starter
- Not a bad run
- Penalties until arteta gets back maybe still after he goes
- free Kicks
- Scores as many points as a midfielder (for cheaper) plus clean sheet potential.Open ControlsBecause he hurts team structure, and because a Chelsea defender is a better choice at that price.
It's late, and I'm heading out, but if you want more analysis, feel free to trawl back to earlier pages.Open Controls
The teams with Moses in it - with who are you rotating him with? Holt?
Open ControlsI'm rotating with Holt
Open ControlsI'll play him every week for the first three, because he's a cheap forward whose nice run coincides with Lampard's, who is obviously over-expensive.
May well get rid when I'm no longer scrimping for cash to afford Fatty.Open ControlsSo who is sitting out then from your front 8 in gw 1-3?
Open Controls
Thinking of taking a punt on Mark Davies (bol) with his new position could pay off. Rotates well with Moses and is only £5.0

😉Open ControlsWhat are people thinking about including Luiz in their team?
I'm hoping that AVB is feeling pressure to play him due to his price tag. We all know what happens to managers who dont play RAs expensive imports. They get the sack regardless of results.
Also AVB should know him well from his time in Portugal.
Fingers crossed anywayOpen ControlsAt Which position does Luiz play who are other players to compit him ?

Open Controls

Open ControlsYou have no captaincy options. Get Moses in there!
Open ControlsHart and Chech don't rotate very well.
Open Controls
Is it worth having both Baines and A Cole in your team? After GW 1, Baines has a great run of fixtures. I've heard some arguments that Baines destroys your team structure, but the fact is, Baines essentially scores as more points than most midfielders at 8.0. My team is currently:
Given, Ruddy
A Cole, Kompany, Hughes, Baines, (Orr)
Silva, Malouda, Sessegnon, Moses, (Ephraim - liable to change)
RVP, Zamora, (Holt)
If I downgrade Baines, I could upgrade Holt to Suarez or Caroll, but is it really worth it?Open ControlsYou will be forced to play too many not great options week in week out regardless of fixtures
Open ControlsI'm not one of these fanatics about team structure because i know from last season it doesn't stay the same anyway.
You'll find yourself altering your structure throughout the season as different players become must-haves
It really isn't difficult to accommodate baines and cole and then later downgrade one of them (either have a bit of cash in the bank for one week, or save a transfer/ take a hit and upgrade a midfielder the same week)
Also, talking of hits, at the end of last season I realised taking hits is fine if it is for the long term... but the absolute worst thing to do is take a hit because of the next gameweek - it needs to be justified over 6+ fixtures, or there should be a double gw somewhere soon.Open ControlsAlso, regardless of position - a player is a player.
When i look at baines or anyone i think about points he might get, and money he costs. I don't care if he gets these points because of clean sheets, assists or goals.Open ControlsSo do you guys think I should leave my team as it is, or downgrade Baines to Simspon and upgrade Holt to Suarez?
Open Controls
My problem with Baines is that Everton have been stagnent for a few seasons now and yet another summer of no spending they are in danger of becoming a bottom half team.
Baines will no doubt still score fairly well but you should be aware that his points total could take a hit like Evertons total points most likely will.
He'll have less goals, less set-piece opportunities and less assists.
and for 8.0 in DF is it worth it?Open ControlsIf Baines scores the same number of points this season as he did last season then he is worth it. Nobody could produce a sensible argument to say he isn't.
However, we are not rerunning last season and he may struggle to reproduce that total. There were certainly periods of last season (such as the start) where his points scoring was poor. Other times, particularly when Arteta was out, he was a beast.
As for your team you could downgrade Baines or maybe Hughes and look to upgrade Ephraim.Open Controls

Thanks.Open ControlsThe logic of so many people on FFS defies me, always hear the same comments such as: "Ooh, don't double up on defenders from one team" or "Baines is too expensive" etc...
Well a player is only too expensive if they don't score you more points than similarly priced players - Baines outscored every other player that costs 8mil in the game last year, people keep going on about that being too much for a defender - well if he scores you more than your 9mil midfielder there's no logical argument in that. (And no, we don't know how players will do this season but the only data we have is historical - none of us have a crystal ball)
Doubling up on defenders is also fine - sometimes you may take a hit but sometimes it'll work out. I have two city defenders, last season they kept more clean sheets than everyone else so that's a solid plan. Anyone who hopes all their defence from different teams will keep clean sheets every week is hoping for a lot of 0-0 draws.
It's almost like some kind of superstition here all these kinds of things, at the end of the day the logic that goes into much of what is said has flaws, there's some skill to choosing right but there's also a lot of luck - those saying Baines is too expensive may think differently if he gets a brace and a clean sheet on day one. Fact is we don't know but presuming a similarly priced Yaya Toure will do better just because he's a midfielder is pretty narrow thinking. (I don't have Baines but he's a good example of what I'm talking about)Open ControlsCouldn't agree more, although I may not double up on defenders if was going for H2H glory.
Open ControlsI find the H2H's a big distraction from the long game - made that mistake before and sometimes it just turns out your opponent happens to have better fixtures for his team than you do on a given week! (As well as the luck of the draw captain choice!) Glad I'm not in it this year 🙂
Just got to try and beat my 798th place finish in the 09/10 season after losing focus last year! 😀Open Controls
A pretty empassioned speech about the merits of Baines to then find out you dont even have him in your team 😉
Open ControlsWell said. Basically, great site but some people don't really know what they're doing mate.
Someone above is begging for advice from someone whose average finish in the last 3 years is around 500000.
The game isn't overly difficult, play the percentages and fixtures, think logically and keep abreast of news.
FWIW I'm running only with City (triple block), Chelsea (Lampard ooooh-he's 12 mil for a reason doncha know), Villa and Fulham players for 3 weeks and then WC when things become clearer. Should give me a jump-start that I can them consolidate when RVP/Rooney's fixtures improve. I have another WC in Jan and that's all I'll need. Good players can afford to treat the WC fairly frivolously I feel. It's not something to treasure and protect, I use it early doors to restructure my team based on emerging patterns.
Good luck and keep thinking for yourself, I'm certainly looking forward to 18+ points next Monday night from my City boys.Open ControlsTop post fella, and some good points made there.
Open ControlsYup, got to think for yourself or you'll just be in the pack with everyone else! The only problem is playing catch-up if the generic RMT team on hear scores big, if it doesn't however you'll find about 300,000 people diving for wildcards in early September 😀
Open Controls
Top post jimbo. It's funny it seems as though if enough people post the same unfounded idea and proclaim it to be a fact it becomes ffs law. Reminds me of religion 😛
Open ControlsI agree that you can't make 'rules'.
Take defence for example, last season I went with a back line of cheaper rotation defenders, and made a lot of transfers. Another guy in my league had 3 expensive lynch pin defenders and didn't change at all.
Its all down to how you want to set out your team.
Oh and as for the 'x is too expensive' argument...excluding last year...I said that ever year about Lampard... 🙁Open ControlsExcellent post, the Church of Camzy is infuriating. Making up "proven" laws and telling them as facts to anyone who'll listen after having one good season.
I agree with all your points here, also: why does everyone need this certain, mythical "team structure" where you need a beastly midfield with at least 2 captaincy choices? The times of squeezing in 3 of Lampard, Gerrard, Fabregas and Ronaldo is over.
PS no-one will read this 😀Open Controls
Guys, would u help me with that?

Any tips appreciated,
CheersOpen Controlsnot convinced about Silva as a fantasy player. Otherwise looks good. BTW, I've seen Orr in a lot of people's teams. Is there any special reason for this? There are lots of other 4.0 defenders but everyone seems to be going for him.
Open ControlsIt's probably because Orr rotates perfectly with newcastle/sunderland defence. You can go for Gabbidon as well I think.
Open Controls
If you guys could drag yourselves away from the relentless tyrade of crappy rmt's. Just wondered if anybody else experiances problems logging on to the FPL home page off an Iphone? It always says my loggin results are wrong, 99.9% sure there not lol!
Open ControlsI have the same problem when not on a wifi. When on wifi I get on it no trouble. It is rumored they are working on an app.

Toying around with the ubercheap defence again.... this time Ive even skipped out on the Kompany man...
most expensive defender is Titus which says it all really.
My midfield and forwards is as follows.
Malouda, Nzogbia, Downing, Moses, Silva
Rooney, RVP, Holt
I cant help but feel intrigued by that team... Can someone please talk some sense into me?Open ControlsGotta say MF is looking superb and of course upfront a RVP + Roon combo is lethal. Shame Holt has to go in there, it kinda spoils the asthetics.
I'm guessing your DF must be fairly vomit inducing if the most expensive is Bramble thoughOpen Controlsit certainly is. Consists of bramble, wilkinson, simpson, tate, and Gabbidon.
Holt would rotate with nzogbia and Moses....Open ControlsOuch. I think you're a brave man if you go into GW1 with that defense. But you could be well rewarded for your bravery.
My DF is only slightly better though Ive squeezed in Komp and Luiz/Clichy- cant decide on them ATM and my MF ATT is slightly weaker but pretty similar to yoursOpen ControlsIdentical midfield to me at the moment.... I've gone with just one big name forward to balance the defence however.
GW1 strategy for me is all about being sensible with solid starters, and allowing for easy changes when patterns emerge. I think you'll struggle to make any changes to that side without making two transfersOpen Controls
Is Enrique going to be a certain starter at Pool?
Open ControlsIf he signs for them I'd say he's a nailed on starter
Open Controlsnot much competition at lb - a sure starter, just like downing at left mid
Open ControlsHe is now in my team, so I hope so ...
Open ControlsDon't forget that even though it's Liverpool the days of them being rock solid at the back seem to be a little in the past. The last six months or so (including pre-season) has seen them ship a ton of goals.
