Jose Enrique looks like following Joey Barton through the St James’ exit door. Sir Alex Ferguson talks up Phil Jones and Ashley Young, while hinting at a possible exit for a certain enigmatic Bulgarian. Jack Wilshere’s ankle knock is fine, he tweets. Roy Hodgson enthuses over new Baggies boy Zoltan Gera and Stephen Hunt predict a less-defensive Wolves next season. This morning’s Scribbles are here, folks:

Jose Enrique’s proposed move to Liverpool is looking more likely by the day. The left-back has one year left on his contract at Newcastle and the club are now ready to cash in, following a summer of unrest on Tyneside. The move would be of significant interest to Fantasy managers- priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Spaniard would offer plenty attacking impetus and defensive returns if his move to Anfield transpires.

Jack Wilshere’s ankle knock should only keep the midfielder for a few more days. The 19 year old took to twitter last night to confirm the initial prognosis of the Arsenal medical staff, after he picked up the injury against New York Red Bulls last weekend. Wilshere tweeted:

“Ankle scan just showed some inflammation. Hopefully will settle down in a few days.”

Sir Alex Ferguson provides up with plenty to consider this morning. Speaking to the club magazine Inside United, Fergie suggested Phil Jones may play a bigger part in first-team matters this upcoming season than many have anticipated:

‘You might think he might not play, but the ability he’s got and the determination he’s got, he could quite easily play. He’s the future obviously, but he could certainly come in right away.’

Jones played at centre half and in a holding midfield role for Blackburn last term and has already been utilised at right-back this pre-season by the United boss. At 5.5 in FPL, he’d certainly be worth considering if plenty starts prove to be the case, but it’s more of a wait-and-see situation- there are plenty more guaranteed players in that price range and to punt on Jones this early would surely be an unnecessary gamble.

In the same interview, Fergie then turned his attention to fellow new boy Ashley Young. The United boss confirmed Young will mainly be used as a left winger in 2011/12, saying:

Ashley can play in more than one position. He can play wide right, left, even behind the striker, so we have options there. But, initially, we’ll start him as a wide left player.

With Young earmarked for a spot on the left, then, and the less-versatile Antonio Valencia only offering an option on the right, it seems that Nani will flit between appearances on both flanks next term.

Valencia, at 8.0, offers better value than Young and Nani at 10.0, but with the rumoured move for Wesley Sneijder also on the cards, United’s attacking midfield options could prove to be a Fantasy nightmare next season.

Our final Fergie-related matter concerns the future of Dimitar Berbatov. United were in Monaco last night for a charity football match against Marseille and, in a post-match interview with French tv, the United boss was asked if Berbatov could play at big-spending Paris St Germain next summer. His reply:

“Yes. Absolutely, no problem.”

Berbatov has fallen firmly behind Javier Hernandez in the Old Trafford pecking order and any funds from a possible move could be used in the club’s bid to acquire Sneijder from Inter, and help recoup some of the £50m already spent this summer.

Stephen Hunt has suggested Wolves are intent on playing 4-4-2 next season. Having survived the drop despite a final day defeat at Molineux last term, Hunt reckons the club will be adopting a slightly less-cautious approach in 2011/12, with a front pairing of Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle ready to take on Premier League defences together. Doyle has mainly featured as a lone striker under Mick McCarthy and Fletcher only grabbed his chance when the Irishman was sidelined with a knee injury in the latter part of 2010/11. With the pair relatively low-priced – Doyle is 6.0 and Fletcher 6.5- it’s certainly a situation worth monitoring.

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson is delighted with new signing Zoltan Gera. Having previously linked up at Fulham before, the Baggies boss is fully aware of the midfielder’s capabilities and has snapped the Hungarian up on a free transfer. Gera is currently regaining fitness following an ankle injury and is also banned for the first three games of the new campaign, but it’s clear Hodgson is a firm favourite of his talents and plenty starts seem likely. Gera may also share set-piece duties with Chris Brunt and his versatility may even offer a role just off the main striker in Hodgson’s 4-4-1-1 formation. Hodgson enthused yesterday:

I of course know him well and admired him in the two years we worked together at Fulham, where he was an integral part of the team that did well during those years. I think it is a massive coup for the club that we have been able to persuade him to come back to West Brom. I think it is an excellent signing and he is a player I hope will do as well in the coming seasons as he has done in the past seasons with West Brom and Fulham.

Who's the best midfielder for 5.0mil to fit into this team

    Given
    A.Cole Kompany Briggs
    Silva Moses N'Zogbia (??)
    RVP Zamora Rooney

    Ruddy Sessegnon Brown S.Taylor

Don't give me any hassle over Briggs, it's a personal gamble!

Any other criticism/advice is more than welcome though!

10.0 on GK is 0.5 too much in my opinion.
I would also take out Arteta(isn't he injured?) and Wilshere(prob some more bonuspoints this year, but is more of a box to box player, and not often involved in the goals).
3 in the bank is also at least 1 too much.

      Luiz - rotation risk
      Arteta - Glass legs
Wilshere - Not great in FPL terms
Dyer - not keen but many are
      Odemwingie - tough start
Aguero / Suarez - both might not play GW1

There won't be a kick in the pants between Yaya and Silva this year and with the new BP system chances are Yaya will outscore him again so there's an extra 1.5 mill for all you strugling to finish who have Silva in your teams.

Toure was 2nd highest rated last year, miles ahead of Silva due to many more touches.

Yaya came in #7 overall in EA PPI index last year. PPI index will be used this year to assign BPs.

And I couldn't agree more that Yaya is the way to go.

But surely the arrival of Aguero and possibly Nasri means that Yaya cant play forward as much?

Couple with the fact that Silva took a while to get up to speed, and was rotated, whereas Yay played most games (probably due to his massive wage)

Just doing some research on that (there appear to be very few diehard fans of any of the promoted sides on here?) and it seems that the Swansea fans love Dyer. I suspect that one of the #2 midfielders (i.e. not Taarbrat, Sinclair) among those three sides will turn out to be a treasure this season, just don't know which one.

Something to ponder when putting together our teams.

The best value players are those that will deliver significant improvements year on year and hence are initially under priced. Lampard etc are not good value because they will score 6 – 6.5 points per game and are priced accordingly.

I have based my calculation on a modified “points per game” measure. I took their total minutes played and divided by 90 to give their “effective games played”. I then divided their “total points scored” by their “effective games played” to get a points per game measure.

If we consider only the midfielders for the moment and ignore the players new to EPL in 10/11, the big improvers were:

Osman 1.43ppg improvement (6mill starting price)
    Kuyt 1.37ppg (9mill)
    Richardson 1.29ppg (5.5mill)
    Nasri 1.09ppg (7.5mill)
    Cahill 1.07ppg (8.5mill)
    N’Zogbia 1.06ppg (6mill)
    Downing 0.99ppg (7mill)
    Nani 0.85ppg (8mill)
    Young 0.60ppg (8.5mill)

Of note, all of these players are generally young, on the rise, not in the most expensive bracket, from successful clubs or standout players at their club (Downing and Young were Aston Villa last year until Bent came along). Also, apart from Downing and Nani all the other players played roughly similar game time year on year.

So in looking for the potential bargains in the midfield this year do we look at Walcott, Wilshere, Albrighton, Coleman, Johnson, Cleverly, Bale, Moses?

Apart from Moses, most of these guys have barely raised a mention in our RMT’s. We have all jumped on the midfielders from the promoted clubs and perhaps we have missed some diamonds along the way?

    Time will tell!!!

Interesting post. The problem is I guess that it is not always obvious from the start of the season who these players will be. Who would know that Hodgeson would be sacked, KK would take over and Kuyt would play as a striker? Who would have thought Nasri would suddenly become good?

It is easy enough to look at last years championship stats and see who the key men were and this is less risky than going for the likes of Cleverly.

      walcott injured/rotation/fixtures
      wilshire sits deep/doesn't score
albrighton dominated by N'Zog in the RMT's (quite rightly imo although the scouts love him)
coleman expected to play in defence/not nailed on/was oop last year
johnson/cleverly should score heavily for reserves

With Arteta injured i'm actually half considering Osman.

Bale might be worth consideration if VDV got injured -> back on set piece duties.

Coleman reclassified as a mf this season so not worth it

Cleverly back at United so not a hope

Think Wilshere could be one to have if he starts ccapitalising on good positions he gets into

Walcott at £9m seems a bit steep right now, Cahill for the same price looks much better value.

Johnson's too frustrating to have in a FF team, too many 25 minute appearances. Possibly if City pick up some injuries.

    Oliveira Anderson

Since the last game or two of the previous season, it seems that Anderson has taken up the Scholesy role. Now not to say that he is going to fill those shoes, but he has been looking much more involved. Admittedly last season he was annoyingly inconsistent, misplacing passes and not getting a whole lot of pitch time. However since then he has looked much more active. Scoring and assisting much more than ever before.

At only 6 mil, I think despite fixtures he'll be involved in a lot of goals!

    Thoughts?

This lineup covers 12 teams and I'm pretty happy with:

    Schwarzer -- Ruddy
    Kompany -- Huth -- Dunne -- Knight -- Simpson
    Silva -- Cahill -- N'Zogbia -- O'Hara -- Moses
    RVP -- Suarez -- Ba

Have a look at my team above this post! You have a good all round team with lots of rotation options but I always like to have 3 or 4 mad potential captain choices. eg in my team I could choose Drogba, Suarez, Aguero or Nani!!!!

            Drogba-Rotation Risk
Suarez-would love but is likely to miss the start of the season
Aguero-No idea how he'll adapt to the prem
            Nani-another rotation risk

this isn't strictly for the premierleague.com site, but i am doing another dream team and need advice, i can't decide on 3 of the following to fit into the 15.5m i have left..

    Kompany 5.5 Ferdinand 6
    Clichy 4 Rafael 5
    Lescott 4.5 Luiz 6
    Toure 5 Baines 5
    Evra 6.5

3 of the above, 15.5m or less, considering they will pick up points for champions league and FA cup appearances too, cheers.

So if you were doing a sneeky accy for above/ below points come the end of the season for premier league teams. Which ones aqre the stand outs at this early stage in the season. I am using VC.

I think arsenal below 71.5, Norwich above 32.5, WBA over 42.5, mancity over 75.5. What would you go for?

Anyone considering going with Tevez(c) if he is still at City come gw 1 and then switching to Torres/Drogba gw 2?

Or going with Silva and leaving money in bank to upgrade Carrol/Suarez to a Chelsea striker?

Just thinking Chelsea might run havoc gw 2/3

      GW3 Chelsea 8 - 1 Norwich
