Ahmed Elmohamady faces a race to be fit for Hull’s trip to Arsenal. West Ham’s Cheikhou Kouyate could be back in time to face Burnley, Sunderland’s Emanuele Giaccherini may be sidelined until December, while Nigel Pearson talks up Riyad Mahrez’ prospects after the wide man served up a goal and assist against Burnley.

Elmohamady Withdraws from Egypt Squad

Ahmed Elmohamady has dropped out of Egypt’s squad for their upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifiers with a back injury and returned to Hull for further monitoring.

The Scout Says: The Egyptian picked up the problem in the final minutes of the weekend win over Palace and reports suggests he also sustained an arm injury in the incident. Having played 64 consecutive matches in all competitions for the Tigers, his loss would be a bitter blow as Steve Bruce’s side roll up to Arsenal, with Liam Rosenior on standby to deputise if Elmohamady fails to make it. Bruce’s shift to 3-5-2 last weekend brought James Chester back into the first-team, though regardless of formation, Andrew Robertson, at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, still seems the safest option in the Tigers’ rearguard. With Liverpool, Southampton, Spurs, United and Everton also on their agenda in the next seven Gameweeks, clean sheets look very much few and far between for Bruce’s team.

Pearson Praise for Mahrez

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has talked up the recent performances of Riyad Mahrez after the 23-year-old winger bagged a goal and assist at the weekend, describing the Algerian as a “match winner at both ends”.

The Scout Says: Having been dropped in Gameweeks 5 and 6, Mahrez was one of the main beneficiaries of Pearson’s move to a 4-4-2 set-up against Burnley, as he returned to the starting line-up on the right flank and earned his first attacking points of the campaign. The Algerian now sits atop the Leicester midfield rankings in FPL with 21 points, and at just 4.9 could prove an outstanding budget midfield option if he can hold down a starting role ahead of the Foxes’ kind upcoming agenda (new, swa, WBA, sou, SUN, qpr). Mahrez’ gain may be David Nugent’s loss, however, after Saturday’s change in formation saw the English forward left out of the line-up for the first time this season, with Jamie Vardy the man preferred alongside Leonardo Ulloa up top for the Foxes.

Giaccherini Concern for Sunderland

Reports in Italy suggest that Emanuele Giaccherini could be out until December with an ankle problem, after the Sunderland midfielder paid visit to his national side’s training camp in midweek.

The Scout Says: Yesterday’s news will have come as a blow for Sunderland manager Gus Poyet, though will be welcome news for Connor Wickham’s slender band of owners with the England Under-21s man’s start on the left wing now looking assured for the next couple of months. Some may feel that Wickham’s potential has been dented by his move back to the flank to accommodate Steven Fletcher in the central forward spot, but last weekend’s 11-point haul illustrated the 5.8-priced forward is still capable of delivering from out wide. With Wickham back on the flank, competition for the Black Cats’ right wing berth is intensifying – Will Buckley has now started each of the last two but Adam Johnson will be hoping to oust the summer signing, after being dropped to the bench against Stoke at the weekend. A horrendous run for the Black Cats from now until Gameweek 15, in which they face all of last season’s top five, should give Fantasy managers plenty of reasons to steer clear of their midfield assets for now anyway.

Kouyate Pushing for Quick Return

West Ham’s Cheikhou Kouyate could be back in the frame for the Gameweek 8 clash with Burnley after making a rapid recovery from a groin injury. The Senegal international had originally been ruled out for up to six weeks after sustaining the problem against Liverpool in Gameweek 6, but is now on course to make a return at Turf Moor.

The Scout Says: Kouyate’s return could be great news for owners of Stewart Downing, after the former Liverpool midfielder was moved to a deeper role against QPR at the weekend due to injuries. That didn’t stop the 5.6-priced man picking up his third assist of the season, however, as he continues to deliver on his underlying stats. With encounters against Stoke and Villa also on the Hammers’ agenda in the next four, Downing’s appeal as a budget midfield option seems unlikely to diminish any time soon.

PIENAAR READY TO PRESS ON

Everton’s Steven Pienaar believes he is still far from full match sharpness after returning from a six-week absence with a thigh injury against Man United last Sunday. The South African was handed a start by Roberto Martinez at Old Trafford, but was subbed off just after the hour mark, and is aware that he will require more pitch time to build his fitness:

“For me, it was a great feeling just to be back on the pitch after almost six weeks out. I didn’t expect to start but when you get this type of opportunity, you have to grab it with both hands. For me, it’s important to stay focused and stay fit now. You can do all the graft and the running, but the thing I’ve missed is playing. It’s different from just running in training and I need more games under my belt [to get back to 100 per cent].”

The Scout Says: Ruled out since Gameweek 2, Pienaar’s return to the fray coincides with an excellent run of fixtures for the Toffees. The South African’s words should also allay fears over any injury, after initial reports suggested he was withdrawn due to a recurrence of the problem in the 2-1 defeat. Coupled with the continued absence of Kevin Mirallas due to a hamstring problem, this should mean that the 5.8-priced midfielder is likely to feature in the Toffees’ starting line-up in two weekends’ time when they face Aston Villa. The Merseyside outfit have been struggling for form recently, with just one win in their last five league fixtures, though they have an attractive schedule ahead of them (AVL, bur, SWA, sun, WHM) which may well provide Pienaar the platform to impress as a real under-the-radar option.

What’s wrong with jumping on bandwagons?

Behind the scenes we’ve been having an interesting discussion about ownership and how it effects transfer decisions.

For me ownership is key to transfer decisions if the players with high ownership keep scoring. FPL is a game where the aim is to get the highest rank possible. That involves all the stuff we do like watch players and analyse stats but it also means playing the numbers game. If Di Maria gets double digit hauls every other week and 8/10 of the top 10K have him then not having him is a risk. For me the game is about getting points from 11 positions on a screen. You get the most you can from each. That relies on you being able to match and then better those around you. Sure Di Maria may be a bandwagon I can't resist jumping on, but then so was RVP, Suarez, Bale, Ronaldo....all of whom help get good ranks. Last season showed that those that didn't get on the Suarez, Ramsey etc bandwagons will falter.

So for me to climb up the ranks I opt to get as many high performing, high owned players as I can. In most cases they will be expensive. For the cheaper positions I will take risks on low owned potential bandwagons that I hope will give me an edge over my rivals who already have the likes of Di Maria. But for my key roles in midfield and forward positions I’m happy to follow the crowd as long as there is statistical merit in doing so.

I stress though I won’t get a high-owned player in that I don’t think will do well. For me ownership is important but not at the expense of points potential. For example Lovren is owned by 22 per cent of managers but there’s no way I’m getting him.

I accept that my focus on high ownership ownership is not how all managers think. As Granville has pointed out to me in our discussion behind the scenes “We often look at low ownership levels as an opportunity to rise in rank and we've mentioned it many times on the scoutcast, but you actually take the opposite view.”

I also accept that my history shows that my policy is successful only up to a point. I have five top 10K finishes. But just one in the top 1k and I’ve never been inside the top 100.

So what is your take on ownership? How much does it influence your decisions? Is a ranking climb more achievable by hopping on bandwagons and negating your rival’s points scorers, or more achievable by focusing on differentials?

I fell for the "high" ownership and inevitable price increase last Friday when I opted for Ulloa over Sakho.

      I paid the price.

But there is little statistical data to back up Ulloa over Sakho.

If I was considering the two I'd look at the members comparison tool. This shows that on average performances Sakho is far more attacking than Ulloa and far more likely to score.

The point above is that I would only go for high ownership if there was merit to it.

For that one game yes. I put him in the scout picks for that reason. But long term Sakho will do better based on the opportunities their teams and themselves are involved in. Nevertheless Ulloa is a good pick and he will get you points. He's not a bad pick by any stretch.

Doesnt influence much. I transfer in the players I think will score most points, and take it as a bonus if the ownership is low.
But your approach is definately better than transfer in players because they have low ownership and overlook bandwagons. Thats like running the wrong way in an escalator.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Not having a highly owned player who is rattling in the points is likely to have an adverse impact on your rank unless your lower-owned/differential player manages to keep pace.

I was worried about not having Sterling in the early part of the season, so I switched him for Mata in GW3. I've just done the same for ADM (selling Tadic) for the exact same reason.

What I think is critical - and you make the point - is having a highly owned player in form. Sterling, ADM, Fabregas, Siggy, Costa etc are all highly owned and in great form. Guys like Lovren, Howard, Naismith are (relatively) highly owned but not in particularly great form so I'm very happy to steer clear.

I still have my differentials - particularly in defence - and was also delighted to snap up Pelle in GW4 when he delivered 13 points and has been consistently good since.

Ownership equates to risk/reward directly IMO.

You should always pick players with the highest potential for points, of course but since points are forecast, not guaranteed, this is also a game of risk.

Lets say you have two players, both of whom you (and the bookies in the interest of a validated probability) expect to score the same. Player A, and Player B.
      - Player A is captained by upwards of 60% of the game
      - Player B is captained by less than 10%. Let's say he's just returned from a suspension.

      Who would you rather captain?

The answer in terms of expected points is - IT DOESN'T MATTER since the probability of scoring is unaffected. It's 50/50 whether you get the better scorer on the day.

The answer in terms of risk/reward is - IT SHOULDN'T MATTER, points are points and getting those right is an equal chance (50/50), but that's just it. It's as likely to fail as it is to succeed.

If you play out the scenario there is an obvious implication - let's remember here that the chances of any of these things happening is exactly equal.

      Player A ©
      - He fails, no big drop in OR as most of your rivals have done the same. your squad decides your OR movement.
      - He smashes it, no huge rise in OR (as most of your rivals have done the same. your squad decides your OR movement).

      Player B ©
      - He fails, huge OR fall as most of the game breeze past with Player A ©
      - He smashes it, monster OR rise as you leapfrog the herd with Player A ©

Using ONE strategy for the WHOLE season will ultimately balance itself out in terms of probability, but moving between the two - evaluating your level of risk by the quality of the rest of your squad and by your ambition (if you are ranked outside 1M or inside 10K you might want to take more risk&reward on to save pride/get into the top 1K etc) - Ownership is a significant factor in making FPL decisions.

      1. Mr Pink
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 3 months ago

        Great points.

Also, considering that FPL is a game where luck plays a huge part, one has to look at ambitions. Say that based on "skills and knowledge", you should be around the 10k mark over the length of the season, then playing it safe and going for Player A in your example above, should mean that your probability of finishing the season around that 10k mark is good. Going for high risk - high reward, however, would increase the risk of falling outside the top 100k, but would also increase your chances of a top 1k.

If you stick to either of the strategies over many seasons, your average score should be similar, but your spread in best/worst ranking would be much bigger when consistently going for Player B.

Also, I've mentioned this before, but avoiding playing a defender just because he faces one of your attacking players is, in principle, the same as going for
Player B, but a strategy that seems to have much more support on this site.

It's all about the glass ceiling that a player has. If you don't have a player capable of scoring a hat trick any given week, like Costa or even Sterling, you are in serious trouble. However, a player such as Fabregas, who is consistent but rarely scores and unlikely to explode, can be forgone with much less danger.

but if they are a season keeper, what does it matter if they score 8,5,8 or 2,14,5 as you'd expect from Fab vs Haz, for example?

This is an awfully long post to basically say you get in the players that will get you the highest rank Jonty 😉

Bandwagons are so because they're scoring points. If you think they'll keep scoring big points you would be a fool not to get them in unless you think your player will score more.

If you think they wont score well, then why get them? You'll just be kicking yourself when they fail. It gets a bit more tricky though once you start covering rivals. I got Di Maria in for a few reasons. He was scoring well and looks good to continue doing so and it put an end to my rival killing me every week and I could come back from behind the couch during United games.

But the key point is as you said, not to get them in just cos everyone else has, but because they have the credentials to back it up. This also works in reverse. See plenty of people picking 'differentials' just to be different, which is also a bit pointless unless you actually think they will match or outscore the heavily owned player.

That point about your rival killing you with Di Maria is key for me. I look at the top 10K and if a player like him is getting double digit hauls and is owned by everyone high in the rankings then I have to negate their advantage. Once that's negated I can look elsewhere to take advantage. But without heading off their Di Maria advantage I'm sunk.

Only if you think that having Di Maria is an advantage which can't be bridged with investment elsewhere. For that to be the case, you have to be convinced that Di Maria will be the top scoring option in midfield in the short-to-mid term and that the money or transfers it costs to get him can't reap bigger rewards when focused elsewhere.

If that's not the case, you've just put yourself in amongst a huge number of players who, in a few weeks time, will be wondering whether they should have invested in other areas of their team and wondered why they ignored cheaper options in midfield.

For me, I'd rather sink funds into getting Baines ahead of his run of fixtures, than jump on a player that has a far tougher run in the next three weeks and, in my opinion, has enjoyed an element of luck in scoring the points he's achieved so far.

It feels safe having players like fabreagas, sterling, siggy in your team but a little boring with their high ownership. I already got rid of siggy a couple weeks back and probably will lose fabregas this week. It seems silly, but I've used the high ownership players to get into a good position and now I want to take a risk or two.

" FPL is a game where the aim is to get the highest rank possible."....not for me Jonty !!...never has been and never will be (witness my Belgium team of two seasons ago and my hit a week every week last season).....
FPL is a great game but can become a bit of a head f if you let it. I've never worried about OR only mini leagues and banter value with friends and family (as I have wrote many times). If I get 20 pts ahead in my three man mini league then I take a hit or two for bandwagons and punts for the fun of it...and more than happy to do so....
It actually saddens me when some players talk about throwing in the towel because of a poor OR...why?...just start a fresh mini league with some other posters and enjoy the game instead..

People get frustrated and bored alright. Gave me a good idea for my mini-league. We have a cash prize for the winner obviously but we also have a cash prize for the highest weekly score which should keep everybody interested right up til the end, even if they have no chance of winning.

BTW, you'd think the winner would have the highest score most weeks and kill it, but it's not the case. Im currently winning and I've only had the highest score once. Just more consistent scores than the rest.

Since you only get highly owned players who score well...you are basically only getting players that score well, which is the fundamental concept of FPL.

Its all about ownership though. I have got Di Maria because he is well owned by managers above me plus I think he will do well. Fabregas is well owned but I'm not convinced he'll get double digit hauls so I'm ignoring him. Downing is doing well and is a great differential but his ownership is low so there's no risk in my swerving him.

If they have the high ownership and strong liklihood of points then they will be far more attractive to me than a low ownership player with a strong liklihood of points.

I see what you're saying. I've actually done the same, I don't rate ADM or Fab long term...but did get in di maria a couple of weeks ago as a "just in case I'm wrong" kind of strategy.

You can have as tall a mast on your ship as you like, but if you're not floating on the same rising tide as everyone else, you're sinking.

(That sounded less Cantona in my head...)

Another way of reading what you're saying is you want to high valued players who are scoring/likely to score well and you want to make up the rest of the team using lower valued bargains. Seems good to me!

Basically what we need to do as a fantasy manager is find a way to improve our success rate at jumping on the right bandwagons. For example I currently have a fairly template midfield, but I am far from happy with it as I believe there are serious question marks over some of them long term (ADM, Sterling both concern me believe it or not and I wont blindly keep them either)

In a conversation in the early hours of the morning about the use of stats, Triggerlips stated how he manages to get so high in the rankings most years. I didn’t see a single positive comment about his tactic - which seems strange as it obviously works. He said....

“My main strategy is watching the flow of inbound and outbound transfers , i basically pick the same players as everyone else, at the right time, build up team value and then use it to advantage after xmas.
I read the articles etc, listen to other posters and try to be sensible and patient and avoid hits.”

Replies that he got to this...

“So in the end you get a good rank but have no real independent thought. How boring.”

I use a similar strategy (although nowhere near as effectively). There is independent thought because you still have a limited number of free transfers and you still pick which players go into your team. Some bandwagons are joined and others are ignored – the skill is in picking the right ones. There are very few people on here who have ‘real independent thought’ because they are constantly influenced by what they read. The number of people who I see posting about ‘having a feeling’ about Tadic is ridiculous – they would never even consider him if it wasn’t for the group consensus on here. We’re talking about a midfielder with 3.6 ppg – that’s less than Kranjcar, Matic, Dorrans, Jedinak or Routledge. There’s no way independent thought led you to that one.

“You are much more reactive than proactive TBF.”

Of course FPL is reactive – Not many had ADM as soon as he signed but when people see that he is on form then they buy him in. Yaya was a great pick last year but hasn’t performed so well this year – people react and take him out, if he picks up form and Aguero is injured (penalties) then people will react to this and transfer him in. To transfer him in before his form picks up could be considered proactive but this translates as risky. Using your 38 transfers to bring in players who are off form and might improve could net you a few 10 point hauls that others don’t get but most of the time the off form player will remain off form and whilst everyone else is sitting there with fabregas’ regular points coming in, you’re missing out on them.

“It flies in the face of the perma-hunt for the killer differential which is a holy grail for many.”

I hate the word ‘differential’ almost as much as I do the word ‘punt’. All teams are different to everyone else’s. Even if by some miracle you find someone with the same team as you I guarantee it won’t be two weeks later. There is no need to get in players with incredibly low ownership – they are almost always low for a reason. The skill is using your budget to cram in as many of the high point scoring (and therefore highly owned) players as possible and then making the correct captain choice (your captain should earn you at least 25% of your points).

You can have fun with your FPL team, you can take risks on off form/new players, take multiple points hits and make weird captain choices but if you do this you will not consistently end up in the top ranks. There’s nothing wrong with that either but it seems strange to me that posters on here mock people who offer up advice freely on the best way to be successful. So my advice would be forget the differentials, load your team with the high scoring players who you think will continue to do well, watch the team value fly up every week and then get a better team than all your mini league rivals in the January WC.

"they would never even consider him if it wasn’t for the group consensus on here."

Have to disagree with you here. A lot of people have a lot of different reasons for choosing a player and are not just sheep following the consensus here.

People pick a popular player - people accuse them of following the herd

People pick someone else - people accuse them or searching for a differential

      You just can't win 😉

At the end of the day, it's your team. Do whatever the hell you want with it. Sure you might be influenced by others, but ultimately it's all down to you to pull that trigger.

I think it was the wording of Triggerlips post that people felt aggrieved over. He made it sound like he just saw who everyone else was bringing in and just did the same, like some kind of mindless robot. Of course, we know thats not all he does. He builds up TV, then ditches them and makes the right choices.

I reckon you should have a go with Heaton mate. You need a keeper first. Heaton's the best outta the lot.

If you really want a midfielder then get Brunt or Ki

      😉

I was going to pick Schurrle, being the Schurrle lover I am, but he's probably not the best pick in a draft game since there are no autosubs.

A Wednesday morning over an international break is probably a good time to get some feedback from the hardcore FFS users.

In terms of background information I have a 5 season average of a Top 10 finish, as of now I have slipped to nearly 900k position and am losing hope of finding a way back. Current team below.

    Begovic // Myhill
    Terry // Moore // Naylor // Lovren // Chester
    Hazard // Siggy // Sterling // Tadic // Ramsey
    Costa) // Welbeck // Ulloa

Having lost value on Ramsey I knee jerked Sunday with Ramsey & Terry ----> ADM & Bertrand (-4)

I guess what im asking is that "is a WC the state of play here"??

and if so what t7ype of players would one be looking at..
In my leagues im 60-70 behind leaders which iS definately manageable over the season.. Just cant fall any further behind..

        Hi mate

I wouldn't say you need to wildcard. Just got unlucky with some picks. Its so hard to gain ground this season.

one of my ML rivals tried to male up ground with captain choices and has fallen even further back. I would keep that team and aim to get rid of Lovren.

If you want to punt go for Cisse instead of Ulloa?

Looks decent, in fact. Re-think your defence, and swap Siggy and Ramsey for some players with decent prospects. Maybe downgrade one of them to make your defence better.

How many games off the bench before he starts do you think?

I dunno, but he cost me my ML a couple of years ago with a 7 minute cameo in GW 38.

          😡

Yeah I've been waiting for Walcott's return, but it suddenly looks difficult to fit him in! Probably a straight swap for Alexis for me, although if I decide to get Aguero I'll have to downgrade Alexis. Tough one!
