Technical Area

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

If you picked the dream team, you'd be 45 points ahead of the current overall leader (assuming Costa captained each week)

The Dream Team isn't the theoretical maximum btw. If you picked the dream team but also managed to time your 7 transfers perfectly you'd have a higher score than the dream team 🙂

Yes, and not very well - hovering around 500,000. I'm not blaming the formation 😉

That said I've had quite a few cheap defenders with 6 or 7 point returns on my bench quite a few weeks. Difficult to play them over higher-priced midfield options though.

Yea I had Chester on the bench when he smashed 15 points. Then played him when he get sent off! haha

I want to fit in Chadli but finding it hard to do. Even with 3-5-2 I have to drop Pelle or Welbeck!

    ....Pelle to Falcao

    B) Keep Naylor and Pelle

So, what are the arguments for and against bringing Angel Di Maria in this GW for those that don't already have him?

    Against:

Not proven against solid PL teams
£10.1m cost could cause team to be unbalanced.
    He plays for Man United

    For:

Proven in La Liga and at the World Cup
Proven against PL fodder (early indications show)
Price up 0.6m and not even at 40% ownership yet.

    Did i miss anything?

Personally I believe that United can score against the big teams this season, it's the defenders you want to avoid. Goals WILL be shipped.

Just interested to hear how people justify not getting him.

I did it for the entirety of last season with Yaya. Every week we said it can't continue and every week it did. I paid the price for not getting him.

proven in la liga and the world cup in what sense? being a great player? or scoring 4 goals in 34 games and 1 goal in 5 games respecitvely? so that's 5 goals in 39 games, does that make the 3 goals in 5 games so far obvious?

look i'm not saying you're talking complete trash but you are making largely irrelevant (we know he's a great player, fpl points is all that matter) and hugely embelished points (e.g 'and goals to boot' which actually meant 4 goals in 34 matches). 4 goals + 17 assists is not actually that good, hence why he was made only 9.5 compared to an alexis for example.

and please dont call anyone who dares to have an opinion bitter. the argument wasnt about di maria being a good option, it was purely about him being very fortunate so far.

      1. Ady87

Fortunate yes, but you can make your own fortune. If he is willing, unlike every other United mid of recent times (Fletcher, Cleverley, Carrick etc) to have a shot, and that shot lands fortutiously at the feet of a striker or rebounds from a keeper, why should we frown on this?

He has had 2 cracks at goal and both resulted in assists. It's not the first time a top mid like him will do that in the PL this season.

I've read a number of ADM opinions recently from users with teams linked that have a Liverpool badge bottom right corner and Balotelli(c) which of course leads me to talk about bitterness. I accept it was a sweeping statement.

Were they fortunate though? When I first saw them in real time I was sure they were, having watched them both again several times, they actually look like passes. Quite an original technique, granted.

I was thinking of looking at his assists from previous years to see if there are any similar examples, but couldn't be arsed in the end.

21 goals and assists combined when he was subbed on/off every game for Gareth Bale in the first few months masks what were some pretty spectacular performances in my opinion.

I desperately wish I had brought him in 3 or 4 weeks ago, but I didn't and I'm happy to stick with my decision for now. It would mean losing one of Silva or Fabregas (and possibly my WC). If you don't already have him I think bringing him in just before he has a difficult run of games, and has just gone on a run (including some very lucky points), is far too much like chasing an already bolted horse.

I also believe that his impact is exaggerated due to a lack of other big hitting midfielders doing it at the moment. If Walcott comes back and explodes, Sanchez starts doing it consistently, Silva appears, Fabregas scores, Hazard continues from last week, and so on, he'll look less obvious.

A lot of the Arsenal's injuries are due to violent tackles by opponents though.

Players like Dan Smith, Ryan Shawcross, and Martin Taylor.

Just the other day, Danny Rose put his studs into Jack Wilshere's ankle in the penally area.

But yes, we need to look into the training methods of the German national team.

    Which is best?

    A) Baines, Moore + Boyd
    B) Taylor, Chambers + Chadli

    Others:
    Clyne, Duff, Hutton
    ADM, Fab, Sterling, Siggy
    Costa, Aguero, Welbeck

    1. Pepin - RIP Absinthe

Would Chadli be a 5th mid in B? Then A.

if you play 3-4-3 then A

Feel I missed the boat on ADM, so may punt on Hazard for the next few, maybe ADM GW11 or 13 if he keeps on scoring well

He won't be playing every three or four days for a while yet...and we have no idea if he will play CL games or PL games...It's too soon to get him IMO..

Ok guys, who should my Ozil replacement be? I was kind of looking for him to be my differential, so I'm willing to go for any suggestion as long as the argument is logical.

    Current team is:

    Foster/Heaton

    Ivan / Bert / Wisdom / Naylor / Schlupp

    Siggy / Downing / ADM / Fab / OZIL

    Costa / Welbz / Pelle

    Options:-

    A) Silva
    B) Hazard
    C) Sterling
    D) Sanchez
    E) Other

    1. Dr Dream
      • 13 Years

Similar...go for a differential if you was brave enough to do it once...Silva...good luck, seriously...

Leaning toward Sanchez or Silva. Thanks for the help 🙂

Just realised I can't do Hazard unless I switch Ivan for Baines at the same time

With Chambers out, will Bellerin get a game in the Premier League?

With Oezil's injury, who is likely to benefit? Chamberlain? Campbell? ... How far away is Walcott?

Young Hector to the rescue, surely a minimal risk against Hull at home...if Wenger can start with Coquelin in central midfield away at Old Trafford, he can certainly start with Bellerin at right back home to Hukk.
