Oscar grabs a pair of assists in Brazil’s win over Argentina. Dusan Tadic also earns an assist for Serbia. Wilfried Bony is in the goals as Ivory Coast triumph, while Roy Hodgson confirms he has no plans to rest Raheem Sterling for tonight’s clash with Estonia.

Oscar Instrumental in Brazil Win

The Chelsea midfielder provided a pair of assists as Brazil saw off Argentina 2-0 in a friendly match played in China yesterday. Oscar was one of a number of Premier League players afforded 90 minutes in this one – Willian, Filipe Luis, Martin Demichelis, Angel Di Maria and Marcos Rojo featured from start to finish, whilst Sergio Aguero and Erik Lamela were handed an hour apiece.

The Scout Says: Slowly but surely, Oscar is starting to suggest he could yet have a part to play in our Fantasy seasons. A goal and assist in his last three league appearances is indicative of his improving displays and yesterday’s showing merely underlines his playmaking capabilities – at less than 3% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he’d be an invaluable differential if he can continue that form for the Blues. Whilst Aguero owners will be happy with his limited minutes, both South American sides still have plenty of travelling to do before domestic action resumes. Argentina face Hong Kong away on Tuesday, whilst Brazil play Japan in Singapore on the same day before facing a lengthy trip home. Although United don’t return to action until Monday evening, City, on the other hand, are set to play on Saturday lunchtime, and Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping his main men are suitably rested before squaring up to Tottenham.

HODGSON RELYING ON STERLING

Roy Hodgson has declared that he will not rest Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling when England face Estonia in their Euro Qualifier tonight, despite Brendan Rodger’s previous protests about the winger’s current workload. Sterling only played for 45 minutes for England against San Marino on Thursday night, and Hodgson believes he is perfectly capable of putting in another shift this evening:

“When he shows signs of not being quite as sharp, that might be the moment we think we have to manage this and give him a break. I don’t think the situation will need managing until he shows signs of suffering from it. But that is not the case at the moment – and I don’t think Liverpool need to worry.”

The Scout Says: Over 53% of Fantasy managers will be hoping that Sterling comes through tonight’s fixture unscathed, as Liverpool prepare for a kind run of fixtures. Whilst Hodgson is determined to utilise the teenager, Rodgers has already shown that he’s prepared to rest Sterling to the bench to protect his match sharpness, as evidenced by a sub role in the Gameweek 4 clash with Villa, which took place after the first international break of the season. However, with Lazar Markovic sustaining a reported muscle tear in Serbia’s Euro qualifier yesterday, Rodgers may be convinced to hold off resting Sterling for a while yet. Markovic has started two of Liverpool’s last four league fixtures, though has failed to stamp his mark thus far since his summer switch from Benfica. With Daniel Sturridge now set to return to the fold, the Serb is likely to earn a sub role at best when he is back from injury.

TADIC HELPS SERBIA TO DRAW

Dusan Tadic grabbed a late assist as Serbia fought back to earn a 1-1 draw with Armenia in their Euro qualifier.

The Scout Says: Tadic is still flying under the radar in FPL with an ownership of just below 3%, though he has proved a central figure to Ronald Koeman’s plans since joining Southampton in the summer and has picked up returns in each of his last two home appearances. The Saints have two consecutive St Mary’s fixtures ahead of them against Sunderland and Stoke, with three more enticing encounters to follow (hul, LEI, avl), and Tadic, at 7.5, is sure to continue to be instrumental in their midfield. Koeman would also have been encouraged by Florin Gardos’ return from injury for Romania last night – the 4.9-priced centre-back has only played 45 minutes for the Saints this term due to a calf injury, but is now set to increase his manager’s options in defence for their aforementioned run of fixtures.

BONY NETS IN ELEPHANTS’ WIN

Wilfried Bony was on the scoresheet as Ivory Coast defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier yesterday. City’s Yaya Toure earned an assist after his free-kick was deflected into the path of Max Gradel, who slotted home the winner.

The Scout Says: Bony is finally starting to find some form after a laboured start to the campaign. Last night’s strike followed his Gameweek 7 goal against Newcastle, and with two decent fixtures up next for the Swansea (sto, LEI), he could be set to give Garry Monk’s side the ideal fillip after their recent lack of wins. The schedule takes a turn for the worse after Gameweek 9 (eve, ARS, mci), though it is worth remembering that Bony’s displays in such meetings last season saw him earn the status of ‘fixture-proof’ – eight of his 17 goals in the 2013/14 campaign came against the top six sides.

KRUL CONCERN FOR NEWCASTLE

Tim Krul has been withdrawn from Holland’s squad for their European Championship Qualifiers after suffering an elbow injury in training.

The Scout Says: A potential absence for Krul will only add to Alan Pardew’s growing list of woes, with Paul Dummett and Daryl Janmaat having already pulled out of their international squads earlier this week. Krul’s injury could, however, bring Rob Elliot into consideration as the cheapest playing keeper around for a short while, but with 14 goals against in the opening seven Gameweeks, their backline is still unlikely to earn many new owners for now.

BAGGIES SWEATING ON BRUNT

Chris Brunt is in a race to be fit for West Brom’s clash with Man United next weekend. The midfielder missed last night’s Euro qualifier for Northern Ireland with a groin problem and is also a major doubt for their meeting with Greece on Tuesday.

The Scout Says: Ever an ‘unattractive’ pick, Brunt has nonetheless proved valuable for his 5.4 price tag with assists in two of his last three league outings. His total of 51 crosses this season is also particularly impressive, with his eye for a ball into the box likely to be damaging against United’s porous defence next Monday if he can win his fitness race. Brunt’s potential absence is also worrying for Saido Berahino’s owners, as the 5.5-priced forward could be shifted to the right flank with Brown Ideye expected to be fit for the United clash. Three goals in his last two from the central forward berth has seen the England Under-21 star receive plenty of interest already this Gameweek, but his potential could be seriously dented if he is withdrawn to midfield to plug the gap left by Brunt.

Siggy -> Mané good move? I like Southampton's next 5 fixtures much more than Swansea's, and I can always switch back GW13 when Swansea's fixtures become good again and Saints' turn bad.

    Some depressing stats for Liverpool;

    - They have kept 2 clean sheets in their last 16 games - both against Tottenham.
    - In their last 25 games vs teams outside of (last seasons) top 8, they have kept 1 clean sheet (against Fulham, 11 months ago)

    GK: De Gea
DEF: Ivanovic / Shaw / Kolorav
MID: Cazorla / Oscar / Tadic / Mane
FWD: Costa (VC) / Aguero (C) / Vardy

    Subs:

    Begovic / Dyer / Lamela / Austin / Zaha / Rojo / Trippier / Vertonghen / Chambers

Yes, lots of subs, almost no good players left that arent on someone else's team
updating scores is a pain i'm sure but so far our league commissioner has been happy to do it, maybe not so happy 30 weeks from now though

Terry - Baines - Bertrand (Wisdom / Duff)

Sterling - Siggy - Downing - ADM (King)

    Costa - Aguero - Welbeck

Repost from yesterday since everyone went mad about Ireland scoring against Gibraltar just after I posted:

Slightly long post but would appreciate some thoughts. My team has a problem, namely that it doesn't have Aguero. As it stands the team is:

    Forster
    Cyne, Berty, Ivanovic
    ADM, Sterling, Silva, Siggy
    Costa, Falcao, Ulloa

McCarthy, Boyd, Moore, Hutton, 1m in bank

I have two ideas for how to get Aguero in

    A) Ulloa and Falcao to Berahino and Aguero (-4)
    B) Save FT, then Silva and Falcao to Chadli and Aguero

A would leave me with no money, I wouldn't have any particular transfer plans going forward but Silva to Walcott would probably happen in a few weeks. With B I could turn Ulloa into Welbeck the following week (GW10) and be left with about .8m

I really want Aguero this GW but I'm thinking B is the better idea as it gives me a route to Welbeck as well although A means I can hold three 9m plus midfielders. Any thoughts?

      A. Look at Berahinos stats from last year. 79 points in 1419 minutes. Given a full season hed have got 160 - 170. This years hes a better player, on penalties, scoring for fun for the U21s and hes still only available for 5.5m.

He is going to be one of this seasons success stories.

I said he was good, not Superman!

          😉

Look at Welbecks stats from last year, a year when he was playing for a crap team and spent most of his time out wide. If he played a full season hed have been on for a 200 pointer!

This is not strictly correct. While he only played 1419 minutes, he made 32 appearances. Points per game is a more useful stat than points per minute.

        1. Dr Funk
          • 13 Years
          11 years, 1 month ago

Yeah and many of those appearances were as a sub. Granted, maybe coming on when others are tired gives you more chance of getting returns but I think PPM gives you a fair idea of what a player COULD do.

          1. JasonG123
            • 12 Years
            11 years, 1 month ago

Fair enough. Though it is a little skewed. For example, someone could come on for 1 minute six times and get 6 points vs someone else you plays 90 minutes and scores who also gets 6 points. So PPM while useful is not determinative.

I fear City could batter them like last season and similar to how Liverpool took them to pieces in GW3. The globetrotting is the one thing holding me back from taking a hit and giving him the armband.

Personally I wouldnt want Berahino atm with 3 tough fixtures in the next 6, he has done well in home fixtures against porous defences and scored a dodgy pen. Yeah he's cheap but surely at that value Naismith or someone is a better option, better team etc.

Yeah I wouldn't really be confident owning Berahino. Doing B gives the money for Welbeck and he is bound to be scoring and assisting.

B, see below. Monitor Aguero and Falcao though, while Radamel has not lit it up yet, I'd watch how the next GW or two go (similar for Aguero, hasn't really been returning what you'd want for his pricetag).

Think I've been lucky not to miss an Aguero haul so far. Falcao just isn't getting the same level of chances and the fixtures go bad after this GW.

If Falcao starts firing I'll just have to work out how to turn Ulloa into him without selling any of Costa, Kun, ADM, Sterling or Ivanovic...

He always does yet only gets the one goal. I have a hunch it is how City are playing as a unit, they have not been great for the most part and I think that may be hampering him somewhat.

Falcao's issue is obvious lack of sharpness, his shooting wasn't good the last game mostly but he was getting into those positions to shoot and he looked much much more lively than previous games.

Finally, worth considering is how both teams are playing. City can defend and attack so you'd expect returns of course, United can only really attack so a lot hinges on them scoring more goals than the opposition (much like Pool last season).

But with that said, you have the stats etc. so I'm sure you've got a much better idea than I do! Currently neither are really living up to the pricetag.

Its not based on stats (though Falcao's average position is bad), just watching City and Utd play makes Aguero look like a much better option. I missed most of the last game though where you say Falcao was improving.

Having a City striker over a Utd striker seems sensible, not sure I can cope with owning ADM and Falcao when Chelsea tear them to pieces.

              1. Somalion

It is funny because in the last game I actually for the first time was very excited watching Falcao for United, he's still not there yet at all but he was very very eager to get there by the looks of things.

There's no question of who the better team is in my mind of course, City just haven't been as... well as Cityish really, looked disinterested imo. Of course, that can change at any time so I definitely understand wanting a City striker.

Oh aye, Chelsea is the bad one, I think they'll score against City and Arsenal (not necessarily win but score).

Yeah there's likely to be a time when I want him back but the funds don't exist for the all Athletico attack without serious compromises elsewhere. Think it's got to be the 2 that are the main men for the best 2 teams in the league. Trying to fit them all in come the Jan wildcard will be fun.

Thinking ahead to when Saints fixtures turn sour , would you still keep a double of Bertie and Clyne just for attacking potential ? I'm already thinking to lose one, im thinking Bego Bertrand > Guzan Kolarov from gw13, would leave me Baines Clyne Kolarov

I have 3 and intend to ditch the lot when the fixtures turn, nasty run until January. Clean sheets are the bread and butter for defenders and I'd be surprised if they got 2 during the bad fixtures.

And that's when their defence was good...

Benteke, Cisse, Jellyfish. All the old boys are returning to my radar, Pelle may have to pack his bags 😉

I'm getting bored of all the template teams, mine included.

        Very tempted by Pelle->Benteke/Cisse

        I have Tadic and Clyne...

Could get away with it. Cisse is calling to me at the moment and he can certainly score in his upcoming games.

      A) Costa + Aguero + Naismith

      B) Costa + Pelle + Welbeck + 2.3m?
