Danny Welbeck is subbed off on England duties with an ankle knock, while Raheem Sterling complains of fatigue. David Silva serves up a goal and assist for Spain as Diego Costa finally gets his name on the scoresheet for Vicente del Bosque’s side. Elsewhere, Marko Arnautovic is an early worry for Stoke after being forced off during Austria’s win over Montenegro.

WELBECK ANKLE WORRY FOR GUNNERS

Danny Welbeck could be set to be added to Arsenal’s growing injury list after hobbling from the pitch in the second half of England’s 1-0 European Championship qualifier victory over Estonia. Roy Hodgson has, however, moved fast to assert that the ankle problem looks to be a minor one:

“I don’t think he’s injured. He just rolled his ankle slightly. The doctors are not worried about it.”

The Scout Says: Welbeck currently stands as the most transferred-in forward this Gameweek, with over 48,000 managers acquiring his services thus far, all of whom will now be sweating on his fitness ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Hull on Saturday afternoon. Hodgson’s words certainly offer optimism, though we will await to hear what Arsene Wenger makes of the situation upon Welbeck’s return to north London. A possible absence could well see Alexis Sanchez move up front against the Tigers – the 10.3-priced midfielder may not have registered returns since Gameweek 4, but has still racked up five goals and a pair of assists in 12 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions from out wide. Arsenal have an excellent schedule ahead of them (HUL, sun, BUR, swa) but their current injury crisis will undoubtedly dampen expectations – with Welbeck potentially joining the recently-injured Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey on the sidelines, Wenger – and Fantasy managers alike – will be desperate for the likes of Theo Walcott to finally return to the frame.

STERLING GETS HIS WISH

Roy Hodgson was forced to bench Raheem Sterling in England’s win yesterday after the Liverpool youngster complained of fatigue prior to the Estonia clash. Having previously stated his intent to not give in to Brendan Rodgers’ demands over resting Sterling, Hodgson admitted that the winger approached him directly to raise the matter:

“We were just about to have a light session at the Grove and he said, ‘I feel tired and I don’t think I am in my best form at the moment’. I admire his honesty for telling me. It was two days after the San Marino game when we did a lot of running then because we had a lot of the ball.”

Sterling was, however, introduced as a substitute after 64 minutes against Estonia, and won the free-kick for Wayne Rooney to curl home the winner.

The Scout Says: Having only played a total of 71 minutes across England’s two Euro qualifiers this week, there is surely a strong chance that Sterling will now start when Liverpool square up to QPR next weekend. Certainly, Fantasy managers will be keeping a keen eye on the situation – Sterling is the most popular midfielder in the FPL game, with an excess of 53% ownership, and if his fatigue carries into domestic matters we would have to re-assess the situation if Rodgers also decides to ease him into action. With question marks continuing to hover over the teenager’s pitch time, Jordan Henderson is beginning to emerge as an intriguing cut-price alternative in the Liverpool midfield – costing just 6.0, and having bagged a 13-point haul in his last appearance, the former Sunderland man has already convinced over 33,500 managers to jump aboard this Gameweek ahead of the potentially highly profitable fixture at Loftus Road on Sunday.

SILVA IMPRESSES FOR LA ROJA

David Silva supplied a goal and an assist for Spain last night as they defeated Luxembourg 4-0.

The Scout Says: He may have picked up returns in just one of his last six appearances for Man City, but Silva’s recent performances have seen the little Spaniard earn plenty of interest round these parts. With an ownership of 11.6%, Silva is the most popular pick in City’s midfield right now and has a decent forthcoming schedule (TOT, whm, MNU, qpr, SWA) to continue to convince. Meanwhile, further up the field for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, Stefan Jovetic recovered from his recent injury difficulties to feature for Montenegro last night as half time substitute. The forward, now back down to his starting price of 8.0, is set to rival for Edin Dzeko for a starting spot alongside Sergio Aguero as City welcome Spurs to the Etihad this weekend.

COSTA BREAKS SPAIN DUCK

After 516 minutes of international football, Diego Costa finally notched his first goal for Spain yesterday as Vicente del Bosque’s men recovered from their midweek defeat in Slovakia.

The Scout Says: Costa is in dreamland right now. That’s the forward’s tenth goal since his summer switch to Chelsea, but possibly the one that will taste the sweetest, after his international displays were subject to criticism in some corners over recent months. Further good news for his remarkable 66.9% ownership is that, having only missed eight minutes over the course of Spain’s two recent Euro Qualifiers, his hamstring problems appear to be in the past. Crystal Palace are up next for Chelsea and Costa’s owners will be understandably confident of him adding to his tally.

STOKE WAIT ON ARNAUTOVIC

Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic earned an assist as Austria ran out 1-0 victors over Montenegro in their Euro qualifier yesterday, but was later hooked after sustaining an injury.

The Scout Says: Mark Hughes already has worries out wide, with Victor Moses and Mame Biram Diouf currently nursing knocks and Arnautovic now looks set to add to the list of doubts for the Potters’ Gameweek 8 home clash with Swansea. The Austrian has been a member of the starting XI for Stoke’s last two league fixtures, and with Peter Odemwingie still absent, a spell on the sidelines for Arnautovic could offer Liverpool loanee Oussama Assaidi a route into Hughes’ first team plans in the coming weeks. The Potters have three tempting home encounters (SWA, WHM, BUR) in their next five, though their current injury worries are proving a serious impediment for investment.

    So as the article suggests (and is reported elsewhere) Sterling fatigued, Welbeck a minor doubt, Silva starting to look good - Will this int break shake things up a bit? Although the breaks are bit frustrating, especially if you were starting to get some momentum, I'd personally like the excuse to break away from 'the template' to get some differentials in. Is anyone considering Sterling out at all?

      My midfield is the one area of my team that I dont want to touch. Its performing well and I can make much more improvements in other areas of my team. No point chasing points in midfield.

        Me neither, just trying foresee event in a similar way to getting ADM in for Ramsey a couple of weeks before most. Obviously not an exact science though...

      Nope.

      Rearranging a defence never provides great uplift to your fpl score. Sure those moves are all worthwhile, but not worth the cost of a WC.

          But your existing defenders will get 2pts. At best your new defenders will get 6pts, but most likely not. Thats not worth a WC.

      Thanks. I'm thinking Pelle out, Cisse in just to spice things up. Also thinking Baines in for a hit (Dier out). It will leave me with a healthy cash balance. Am I bonkers especially with Soton's good fixtures.

          Not at all. Soton fixtures aren't as good from a goalscoring POV. Sunderland and Stoke are tight at the back and will cose Pelle down. He's definitely a more creative player so there's always a good bonus chance, but for goals and points I'd have Cisse over him for the next 6 games at least.

    So, seven GWs in. How has your GK pairing faired? Has your rotation worked? How many points has your GK got you so far?

    The best option so far would have been Lloris/ 4m = 31 points. But that would have set you back 9.5m.

    Speroni/ 4m = 28 points for 9m. Mannone / 4m = 28 points for 8.5m.

    I've had Foster/ 4m = 23 points for 8.5m and benched Hamer's CS 😆

    Just wondered if anyone had a rotation that beats any of the above

      I'm on Begovic/Hamer: 22pts
      Benched Hamer's CS as well

      Not really happy about this pair, but no need to take hits for a replacement imo

      Heaton/McGregor (9.5m) perfect rotation would have been 40 points (could have been 44 if McGregor wasnt injured when Hull kept the cleanie last week).

      Unfortunately, I only got 29 from them. Anomalies were BUR-MUN (0-0), and HUL-WHU (2-2) vs CPY-BUR (0-0)

    Two FT's and £3.7m ITB burning a hole in my pocket.

    Forster / Guzan
    Rose / Rafael / Robertson / N. Taylor / Duff
    Di Maria / Fab / Sterling / Siggy / Assaidi
    Costa / Pelle / Welbeck

    Defence needs sorting out a bit. Rose has good fixtures from next week onwards but Rafael was a short term pick and Robertson's schedule has hit a bad patch.

    I'll be acquiring Gibbs before the weekend but do I hold or fold up front (Pelle > Sturridge), break the midfield template (Fab > Hazard/Sanchez/Silva) or leave things as they are for another week because of the favourable fixtures?

      Front 3 and 4 mids ok ( assume 3-4-3 )
      imo you need to get a top draw defender - Ivanovic or Bains
      So you could swap Rafael 5.3 -> Ivanovic 7.3
      then Robertson 4.5 -> Bertrand 5.3

      Or Rafael 5.3 -> Bains 7.0
      then Robertson -> Clyne 5.5 // Fonte 5.5 // Bertrand 5.3

      Southampton have good fixtures Sunderland, Stoke, Hull, Leicester & Villa - then Man C
      so this is good reason to keep Pelle as well.

        Cheers - trying to work out if it is worth playing the WC. Problem I see with using it now is that you have Sturridge, Walcott, Rooney all to come back in next few weeks and the line up I would be left with would not give me much flexibility without numerous changes.

        As it stands at the moment I can just get rid of Aguero at any point and it would open up the changes.

    I have Sterling & am surprised he's moaning about how tired he is. Isn't he young & super fit & playing the game he loves & getting paid handsomely for it. Harden up bro as you're in my team. I'm not feeling any positive energy from him so I might get rid. If he hasn't got the right attitude then his scores will suffer. Does anyone agree or will he prove me wrong.

    So who's the best Sterling replacement
    (a) Henderson
    (b) Lallana
    (c) Carzola
    (d) Wilshere
    (e) Chadli
    (f) Ericksen

    Current team:
    Krul, Elliott

      Really like your team. I'd be a bit wary of not having Aguero though as City's fixtures look good from GW11-20.

      I'm currently in a pickle as I want to get Baines in my team, but that means sacrificing one of Aguero and Costa. Here's my current team:

      Begovic / Hamer
      Bertrand / Naylor / PVa / Duff / Moore
      ADM / Fabregas / Sterling / Siggy / Boyd
      Aguero / Costa / Pelle

      Considering doing these changes over the next two gameweeks, all free transfers.
      PVa -> Baines
      Costa -> Welbeck
      Fabregas -> Hazard

      1. Claude Mikelele
        • 12 Years

        Thanks, I really want to get aguero in but that would mean weakening the rest of my team.

        I wouldn't want to go without Costa even with chelsea's up and down fixtures. His form and ownership will punish you when he explodes and he is one of the few with the potential to do so. And considering he has risen by 0.8, it will be an ordeal to bring him back if he goes up a gear or two.(or maintains his current form)

        Aguero on the other hand is relatively low in ownership and even an explosive game week from him won't really affect your ranking. You can also bring him in later considering he has gone up only by 0.2.

        Looking at your team though, I wouldn't sacrifice costa just to get in baines. Would rather look to upgrade fab to haz.

          Just my opinion, but I think Sturridge is the better bet. Will lift their whole team, and shouldn't be rotated - he's the main man now. Only worry is further injury. Terry over Ward is also great - Gerrard should outscore Tadic, but having a Chelsea defender is a great thing to be able to rely on in a draft game

    I don't know about you guys but I'm wondering whether he will be benched this weekend against QPR to ensure he is well rested for the vital game against Real Madrid on Wednesday and that the same thing happens against Newcastle before the return leg in Madrid - especially with Chelsea to follow.

      He's played 70 minutes in the last two weeks... I'm fairly certain that rest in Estonia will mean he's fully fit for QPR. However, I do expect some more rotation from Rodgers to avoid burn out in the coming months.

      ahhh these posts that put doubt in people's mind.

      what to do though? Waste a transfer to take him out when he plays QPR, possibly the best fixture of the season? No thanks.

        Therein lies the problem! The fixtures say keep, play and possible even Captain! His current form, tiredness and potential for rotation say otherwise...

        I guess the bib theorists of the world should unite! They predicted the Villa benching so if they do so again this weekend either put him on your bench or ensure your 5th mid actually plays

      Welbeck long-term, Pelle through GW12 then get a big hitter in or upgrade to Bony
