It’s a long way off until the winter wildcard kicks into play but we’re never averse to planning ahead. With time to analyse the Fantasy landscape, we roll out a series of articles assessing a number of differential options who could well be worth considering all the way up to Gameweek 20 and perhaps beyond. Beginning with the defenders, then, we assess some overlooked options across the price points who could, potentially, be key to a climb up the rankings.

Cesar Azpilicueta
At 6.0, the Spaniard is the cheapest of Chelsea’s regular defenders, yet he’s owned by less than 10% of FPL managers. What’s key to Azpilicueta’s potential is that he’s clearly favoured by the BPS system – he has earned bonus points every time the league leaders have delivered a clean sheet, whereas the pricier John Terry and Gary Cahill have yet to receive a single bonus point this season. Jose Mourinho’s side have now registered back-to-back clean sheets and are clearly starting to tighten up – as we saw last year, Chelsea are capable of racking up the shut outs regardless of opponent and Azpilicueta, who is just four points off second spot in the defender rankings, could be set to prosper further.

Seamus Coleman
After seven rounds of fixtures, Everton sit just two points off the bottom of the table but one look at the forthcoming schedule certainly affords reason for optimism. Roberto Martinez’ side face just three of last season’s top eight (tot, mci, sot) in the upcoming 13 Gameweeks, with hopes high for returns at both ends of the pitch as they look to improve upon a dire record of one clean sheet to date. Coleman remains a doubt for next weekend’s home clash with Villa but is expected to return imminently and with a mere 5% ownership, the 6.9-priced right-back is definitely one to monitor. Granted, Leighton Baines remains our Toffees defender of choice but the left-back now sits in 17.8% of FPL sides, making him the fifth most popular backline option around. As we saw last year, Coleman is more than capable of bettering his fellow full-back – his total of 180 points was superior to Baines’ best ever Fantasy haul.

Pablo Zabaleta
Another of last year’s big hitters yet to fire on all cylinders, the City right-back has the fixtures to climb up the standings. Zabaleta faces only four of last term’s top eight from now until winter wildcard time, though with three of those fixtures at home (TOT, MUN, sot, EVE), the champions could easily prosper. Despite the arrival of Bacary Sagna, Zabaleta seems to be the preferred choice for Premier League matches and, after missing Gameweek 1 with World Cup fatigue, has started five of the subsequent six and served up a pair of assists in the Gameweek 6 win at Hull. Having racked up 146 points in 2013/14, he’s a proven Fantasy performer that currently sits in less than 5% of FPL sides – if City can improve upon a record of a single shut-out so far, Zabaleta may yet be worth the 6.5 outlay.

Per Mertesacker
There’s no doubt that, due to Mathieu Debuchy’s injury, Calum Chambers (4.6) is the best value route into Arsenal’s defence ahead of a kind run of fixtures which also sees them face just four of last term’s top eight (MUN, SOT, liv, sot) until the winter wildcard kicks in. The youngster’s Gameweek 8 suspension, however, underlines his penchant for picking up yellows – he’s been booked in all five of his league starts for the Gunners and could easily be on course for another ban unless he calms down. The 6.0-priced, 3%-owned Mertesacker may have made a slow start to the campaign but, as evidenced by his tallies of 135 and 157 points in the last two years, he’s a consistent Fantasy performer we can usually rely on. Mertesacker may have yet to score this season but he’s up for touches in the box and has also mirrored last term’s average for efforts in the area, strengthening his chances of points at both ends of the pitch.

Philippe Senderos
A trip to Everton brings down the curtain on a relentless schedule which has seen Villa struggle at both ends of the pitch. Following that one, though, Paul Lambert’s side have just three testing fixtures (TOT, SOT, MUN) in the subsequent 12 rounds of fixtures as they look to return to the resilient form which afforded their opponents a single goal in the first four Gameweeks. At 4.5 he’s a little more expensive that Alan Hutton but Senderos has offered far greater goal threat than any Villa defender – five shots inside the box is bettered only by five defenders this season, yet he’s owned by only 2% of FPL managers, the least popular of Lambert’s first-choice back-four.

James Tomkins
We only have to look to Gameweek 7 to appreciate the West Ham defender’s Fantasy potential. Tomkins’ second assist in the last three matches, allied with a clean sheet and maximum bonus, served up an 11-point haul in the 2-0 win over QPR to justify his selection in the Scout Picks. Third amongst defenders for touches in the box (22) and attempts inside the area (eight), his impressive goal threat remains under the radar – despite a relatively kind 5.0 price tag, he’s owned by only 0.3% of FPL managers. Big Sam’s side face just four of last year’s top eight (MCI, eve, che, ARS) in the next 13 rounds and, having chalked up their first clean sheet of the season last time out, will be hoping to return to the form that delivered 14 shout-outs in the season gone by.

Neil Taylor
At 4.6, he’s the cheapest route into a Swansea defence that have already racked up three clean sheets in the first seven – a tally bettered by no other team. Whilst the fixtures between Gameweek 10-12 will ensure many owners will be benching, Taylor still has some strong home matches (LEI, CPL, QPR, TOT, AVL) and four reasonable away trips (sto, whm, hul, qpr) to boost his points potential. He’s the only defender from Garry Monk’s side to earn any attacking returns this term, with an assist accrued against Chelsea in Gameweek 4, yet is owned by only 5% of FPL managers so far.

Alberto Moreno
Let’s face it, Liverpool’s defence have been anything but convincing this season. The Spaniard, however, still looks the man most likely to deliver – only three defenders have created more chances than Moreno’s eight, whilst his goal in Gameweek 3 at Spurs, which led to a 13-point returns, certainly showed he’s capable of producing. Owned by just 6% of FPL managers, the 5.6-priced Spaniard has a superb schedule on the horizon which may well aid his ascent up the Fantasy rankings, with just three of last year’s top eight (CHE, mun, ARS) over the next 13 Gameweeks.

Craig Dawson
With many opting for Andre Wisdom as a budget option, the Baggies centre-half remains firmly under the radar. Owned by just 2% of FPL managers, the 4.5-priced Dawson has already produced four attempts in the box – more than every West Brom defender combined – and his goal threat came to fruition as recently as Gameweek 6, when he racked up a 13-point haul at home to Burnley. The fixtures are somewhat mixed for Alan Irvine’s side, though the installation of Joleon Lescott to the back-four looks key – it’s two clean sheets in three now with the former City man on board, including a 1-0 win at Tottenham – and with some decent home matches (CPL, NEW, WHM, AVL) allied with trips to Leicester, Hull, QPR, Stoke and West Ham, Dawson may well appeal to those eyeing up a cheap rotating defender.

Younes Kaboul
The Tottenham skipper has played every minute under new manager Mauricio Pochettino and as the weeks go by, looks increasingly influential at the back. Available for just 5.0, Kaboul looks nailed-on and, crucially, has earned bonus points on two of the occasions his side have managed a clean sheet – the similarly priced Danny Rose, by comparison, has yet to collect bonus this term. Owned by only 3% of FPL managers, Kaboul will remain off Fantasy radars for the upcoming trip to City but beyond that, he has five decent home clashes (NEW, STO, EVE, CPL, BUR) twinned with trips to Villa, Hull, Swansea and Leicester to benefit from, as Pochettino looks to instill the resilience that brought Southampton 15 clean sheets under his guidance last season.

Decent team. You can try 3-way rotation of your 4th/5th defender with 5th mid and 3rd forward. Playing Naismith every week isn't good idea 🙂

Only 7 of the top 20 scores so far are premium priced, while 7 could also be considered cheapo/ubers at 6.0m and under for mids and attackers.

Probably unsustainable but the value seems hard to pass up right now in order to splurge on the luxury players and plans.

      > Probably unsustainable

      Why's this?
The game's *always* littered with value picks...
No reason why 5 lower priced options couldn't end up in the Top 20.

Simply thinking about regression or progression to historical means or talent levels, but you could be right as each season new players change those levels as they break out.

Meh. Statistical jargon aside, as long as the player has the underlying stats & the subsequent fantasy returns to match I could care less if they're a 13mil RVP or a 6.5mil Michu...

In the end, I guess it's like any other market place, right?
The prices will eventually correct themselves...

I wouldn't worry too much about the template.

Don't be afraid of beating the herd to the curve. If you see something coming that you BELIEVE will be more fruitful, do it.

Yes, the risk is increased, but so too is the reward.

DO NOT sell a template player for the sake of being non-casual/template though.

It's due to wanting to bring in Baines.

        1. Henderson Baines Boyd + .3 ITB
        2. Sigurdsson Baines Albrighton (4.3, non-playing)

I'm not sure Henderson will actually outscore Siggy in the near future, but he could.

Subs: McCarthy (GK), Ulloa , Shawcross, Blackett

Any changes to DEF if I put Shawcross in its double Stoke and that hasn't done me much good so far...

Would you go 3 up Top although I can't see Leicester getting much from NEW cos they have to win one at some stage.

I wouldn't want to bench any of your midfield at this point.

I know it's 'all your eggs in one basket' but I'd go for Shawcross. Attacking threat, Stoke are good at home and Duff against an attacking West Ham team doesn't fill me with confidence

here's an idea, bring caulker IN soon!
with his price edging down towards 4.5 he could be a more palatable guy to throw in for home games and hope for goal. despite qpr's horror start he's actually sitting on 5.7ppg at home this season. after a rocky next month QPR welcome leicester, burnley, west brom, palace and swansea before the jan wildcard.

depends how he was priced. i love an fpl taboo, and getting a QPR defender in would be just that, especially when a southamtpon defender is sold for him. check the fixtures though, could be a great with clyne and co having a blue star next to their name by then making many unwilling to let go

Checked the fixtures. GW13 onwards they have 5 easyish home games in 8. I would still be wary that they could concede in every game. His attacking threat is something I must monitor I admit though, especially from corners.

Which two of these would you play? (Save FT to be Baines next week)

    A) PVA (sou A)

    B) Duff (WHM H)

    C) Hutton (eve A)

    Or....

    D) Play one of the above. Use FT to transfer in Moore (new A) and get Baines next week

    E) PVA + Chester -> Moore + Baines (-4)

    Any help would be appreciated!!

I think CS are pot luck as teams can't / don't defend properly meaning they are few and far between (IMO)
I wouldn't take any hits on my defence unless it was Chelsea, but even then they aren't nailed on for CS
Leave your defence this week, Duff as much of a chance of scoring points as Moore, as does Hutton at Everton.

    Goalkeepers...

I'm seeing them as a massive waste of money right now. I wish I'd gone 4.5/4.0 on my WC GW3.

Stuck with Bego/4.0 until i have a transfer to kill now.

Anyone wanting my take on the best 'Keeper, I say Guzan or Mannone (FWIW)

I read a stat that Sunderland are no. 1 for shots conceded from the 20-25 yard range. This is why Mannone gets so many save points. I had Mannone last year & he was wicked.

A case in point last season would be Rooney. He still did well last season despite ManU's woeful form and overall play.

I guess a good example this season would be Baines...is it worth getting a defender from a team that arguably has forgotten how to defend? Some believe so as his incredible cross rate suggests he will get assists even if there are no clean sheet points. Same to be said of Coleman and his goal threat.

I'm not sure there are any QPR players I'd get though.

Yes that is true but AB has asked earlier about Caulker, it seems a little folly. But with their fixtures from GW 13 could we not compare him to Baines, who with a terrible fixture list still managed a good tally? It would have been more if he hadn't missed his first ever PL spot kick.

tiny sample but caulker has averaged 5.7ppg at home this season, so even at this time when the qpr defence is quite rightly a no go zone. weigh that up against more expensive stalwarts:
          ivanovic: 6.5
          caulker 5.7
          koscielny 4.3
          cahill 4.3
          terry: 4.3
          baines 4.0

Would you not agree though that the B man has had a lot to do with that? They have passed the ball around ok but not been anywhere scintillating, Berahino has been special. I feel his finishing and gusto has almost embarrassed his more well to do counterparts.

Now that I understand, pretty sure this is the flip side (or at least the damning nail in the coffin) of the coverage myth coin.

Great player, talisman, no rotation threat...pretty hard to pass him up for a share of a more potent team's fantasy points, actually.

Why do I not have Berahino in my team? Besides mixed metaphors, that is.

My take on this is simple

      Yes.

Big fish in a small pond syndrome

some teams tend to see points spread around, but often a key player in a smaller team can hog the points

Berahinho is a prime example of this atm, as was Puncheon last season.

Maloney at Wigan a few years ago
Odemwingi at WBA 4? seasons ago
Charlie Adam at the mighty Seasiders

Several good attacking options at poor teams over the years. Very few defenders as clean sheets are "collective" so need consistent goal threat. Caulker maybe?

Keepers however are plentiful given they can accrue save points.

    Bertrand, Baines, Naylor, Veronghen, Duff
    DiMaria, Sterling, Chadli, Sigurdsson, Marney
    Aguero, Costa, Ulloa

    What to do?

My main priorities are getting rid of Mignolet and probably moving some value out of defence
Spurs have good fixtures coming, but I am considering Verts --> 4-4.5; and Mignolet to Lloris.

The main players I am concerned about not owning are Cesc and Welbeck.

Sometimes the best transfer is to do nothing. I would save FT this week and aim for Vertonghen/Mignolet > Cheap and Ulloa > Welbeck next week if you want.
Mignolet / Ulloa both have plum fixtures this week so no reason to get rid.

Why do some people say, "I could care less" when suggesting they're not interested in something.

It's surely, "I couldn't care less". Otherwise, if you could care less it means there are things they are even lesser interested in, so it doesn't really emphasise your lack of interest at all.

The correct term IS 'I couldn't care less' It appears to have been Americanised and turned into a meaningless statement as a result.

    @ab

Caulker out then in is not something I'd considered but, if as you say his price continues to plummet it could be worth something, with Clyne having about the worst run I've ever seen, especially if he'll be be cheaper

Here's a question though, have you checked who he rotates with since I'm assuming you'll only be using him at home?

as he's only a napkin idea right now no, it's something for a month's time. was just putting it out there, mainly how surprisingly good his home scoring has been. i hope that home record takes a pasting next weekend though

      Caulker rotates beautifully with Naylor

ADM owners, anyone planning to bench against Chelsea? Jose is so frustrating in big games, I can see it being a tough week for him.

My alternative is a back 4 of: Vertonghen, Baines, Naylor and Naylor

I don't think that I have ever got a serious player and benched them, other than injury/suspension.

        me neither.
I guess with Naylor I am more than likely gambling on a 6 pointer vs a 2 pointer.
Whereas if ADM has a good game he could easily get more than 6
