This work was inspired by Jonty’s article on Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus point magnets in defence earlier this month. Taking this analysis of how full-backs and centre-backs are performing under the FPL bonus system, I have decided to look across all positions to find the best performers so far.
The Data
For the purposes of this feature I have looked at the total number of bonus points awarded for each position each Gameweek and then as a total so far.

Conclusions
Forwards perform reasonably well in terms of maximum bonus point hauls, but with few two or one point allocations are an all or nothing option. In terms of total bonus points they offer poor value compared to defenders and midfielders. While midfielders notched up 180 bonus points in total and defenders acrued 174, forwards managed just 115.
Defenders are the most likely to gain both two or one point allocation and could offer the best value. In addition investment in defenders such as Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic and Everton’s Leighton Baines, who have goals and assists in their locker and already have maximum bonus points from games, could offer the best value.
Midfielders do well across the board, offering solid captaincy options with their strong chance of maximum bonus points. Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, for example, may be an unfashionable pick as he is in the twilight of his career but in terms of bonus points the midfielder is bang on trend. He has already notched up two maximum bonus point allocations and is a player I have already mentioned for his ability to defy his advancing years when it comes to scoring points in FPL.

Excellent article. So pleased that community members have decided to look into this. This is yet another solid piece of research that proves defenders are doing really well this year for bonus.
