Don’t get us wrong – we’re not labelling this latest droning session as “essential” listening. However, there’s no getting away from the fact that the concept of essential players has dominated the airwaves at Scout towers over the past week.

In this latest episode, Granville and I take on this meaty subject, whilst chewing over the importance of ownership and spit out the semblance of an opinion on both. Around that main course, we take on the usual bevvy of regulars with the usual haphazard panache.

Essential? Not quite, not even on a rainy Thursday night.

    I keep looking at Baines and thinking what a nice differential but then I think to myself why not just get Ivanovic instead? I mean Chelsea are likely to keep more cleansies and Ivanovic is a beast in the box so more goal threat. Only thing missing is pens but then Everton got very few pens last season.

    Is it worth forgetting this Baines pipe dream and just go for Ivanovic instead?

      If I didn't own Ivanovic, I'd still get him before Baines.

      I think there is nothing in it between Baines and Ivan myself. Both very good picks and I think you won't go wrong with either one. I have both myself but I'm aware that thats not realistic for most people.

      If you have to choose I'd go with Ivanovic personally. Its a very close call and i do think Everton will get more penalties this season (last year was an anomaly I believe). However I also think Everton might struggle a bit more to get clean sheets.

        I think my intentions with Baines are only short term anyways, I don't imagine tying up that much funds in one defensive player for too long as money will need to be found for Walcott at some point. So, it's really only a short term thing, maybe 4-5 games max, Everton good fixture run vs. Chelsea's tightening up at the back.

      Ivan is a beast, but is there really any reason to expect he's going to score more than 5 goals or so in the league this season? Has anything really changed this year? I thought he's always loved to raid forward... I guess if you're finding value with the Welbeck/Siggy/Chadli/Pelle's of the world, he might be worth the premium, but I think I'd rather have Azpilcueta.

        Already have Azpi and was thinking of the Chelsea double up. So you reckon it's back to Baines then, for a short term punt? Ivan just poses so much threat though.

          Hm, interesting. I'm not a huge fan of Baines to be honest because I just don't trust Everton's defense. But I guess I would lean toward him because of the fixtures.

          If you have Azpili i would split the risk and go Baines.
          Plus, its more likely that on the next 4 go's he will outscore Ivan

        Well he's scored 3 already so I expect he'll get another 4/5. Would like to own but I do prefer baines.

          You mean 2? Last year he had 3. The year before 5. The year before 3. Why do you think he's going to jump to a different level this year? He could, he does have crazy touches in the box stats but I just can't see what's so different this year as opposed to years past.

          He'll probably score the most goals of any defender (Except maybe Baines) this year, but I'm not sure that makes him worth paying 7.3.

          I've always focused in the past on team value, first third of the season but it seemed less of a tactic this season with the price change changes. I did costa to jovetic for -4 the week he got his brace vs Everton and then reversed the week after. Cost me around 15 pts, I would be doing really well if only hadn't made that move!

            Did that EXACT same move...and the worst was bringing in Ade the useless muppet...and...capt him!!!

            Lost over half mil on selling Fab and Ivano. Have Ivano back.

            Could be top 10k like I say but silly mistakes. Happy with where I am atm

        Not having Aguero is scary, he`s on his game. Questioning Sterling`s form and fitness as well. I know his stats are great, but i`m unimpressed with him so far this season..:/

    2FT, 0.4 in the bank, willing to take a hit. The easiest kind of transfers are Welbeck and Baines in for Balotelli and Taylor, but there might be better things.. Advice, gents?

        Yes, major interest in him, but its hard to aquire. I could do Balo/Sterling to Aguero and say Henderson/Milner, or any cheap midfielder really. Might actually just do it, since i`m sceptical about Sterlings gametime going forward. That said im a Pool fan and we have good fixtures with people returning from injury, and QPR are really really bad..

          oooo i couldn't sell Sterling myself. Think he's in my team for as long as he's starting for your boys. Fabregas is going to be hard to sell but i don't feel like he's gonna hurt me with too many double figure scores (i know i'm tempting fate here!).... it's if i ever need to buy him back that it's really gonna sting 🙁

          Terrible at defending set pieces, QPR have players that can head it home from set pieces. Realistically you really need Moreno to score.

    Been looking Welbeck, but if Giroud is returning so quickly isn't there a risk he'll either be rotated or play out wide (as per ManU days)? Cheap option in top 4 side is much less attractive if he's playing as an inverted winger?

      I'm going for option 1. I don't think Aguero is worth 5m more than Welbeck given the fixtures, especially with Costa as the default captain option at the moment.

            It was about 2 years ago when he was still playing for Man U. Him and his friend/ agent(wearing sunglasses at 9pm indoors) were just the worst. Served Welbeck, Michael Clarke and Angelo Matthews (cricket) since and they were really pleasant. Stands out in memory how above everyone else those pair of pillocks thought they were!

          Caulker to Naylor maybe? Would be nice for defensive rotation I guess. Wouldn't worry too much about Albrighton because I assume he will just be a bench-sitter in your team.

            Thanks Wouter. Naylor is an option, I was thinking Hutton too... Yeah Albrighton is bench fodder, still I can rope in Boyd instead say, who will actually get match time. Im thinking Ill roll it over and make 2 or 3 changes next week

        I'm conflicted.

        Part of me wants Moreno to fail miserably once more so I can continue being a smug git, the other part sneakily hopes that he does get returns vs QPR and everyone holds onto him for weeks and weeks reaping 1/2 points every time.

          Definitely look at a new keeper. You might have to just ditch Krul for a keeper and play them all the time.

          Look at it this way. You would play Clyne Ivan Baines def. Chambers is a great option to have the option to play 4 at the back and is only 0.5 more than the cheapest option.
