Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Sunday

Liverpool require two own goals to get the better of QPR, as Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard bag an assist apiece. Eduardo Vargas scores twice for the R’s, Wilfried Bony and Charlie Adam both notch for the second consecutive Gameweek, whilst Victor Moses produces an assist for the fourth league match in succession for Stoke.

Balotelli Fails to Convince
Brendan Rodgers recalled Mario Balotelli to the starting XI in the lone striker role for the QPR clash, but witnessed another wasteful display as his side needed two own goals to beat the basement-dwellers. With frustration amongst the Reds’ faithful now palpable, the situation up front is a far cry from Liverpool’s fluid and threatening forward line of 12 months ago. To compound matters, Rodgers confirmed post-match that Daniel Sturridge is set be sidelined for the next two to four weeks with a calf injury, putting the onus on Balotelli to produce if the Reds are to take full advantage of a kind schedule which see them face Hull, Newcastle, Palace, Stoke and Leicester in the next six.

Sterling’s Still Ticking Over
Despite a multitude of concerns surrounding Raheem Sterling’s fitness after his recent international duties, Liverpool’s starlet played the full 90 minutes at Loftus Road and earned an assist and two bonus points. Whilst the Reds’ forwards may be toiling, the winger has now scored or assisted in five of his last seven starts and sits just two points off the top of the FPL midfield standings. Though Philippe Coutinho and Steven Gerrard threw their hats into the ring with attacking returns yesterday, Sterling still looks the likeliest source of points across those aforementioned fixtures.

Super Sub Vargas Bags A Brace
The Chilean climbed off the bench to score twice for Harry Redknapp’s side in a 12-minute cameo that should see him press for a starting role for QPR’s home encounter with Aston Villa in Gameweek 9. Vargas has now produced two goals, an assist and three bonus points across his last couple of appearances, though at 6.4 still looks too big a punt in a side who have lost four of their last five league outings. The Hoops have five strong fixtures in their next seven (AVL, new, LEI, swa, BUR) that could help turnaround their fortunes, though despite making changes at the back and between the posts, Harry Redknapp’s defence continues to look there for the taking– yesterday’s loss means they have now conceded two or more goals in six of their last seven league matches.

Bony’s Form Looking Up
Yesterday’s penalty strike means the Ivorian now has back-to-back goals to his name, and is finally starting to find his form ahead of an enticing home clash with Leicester next weekend. Available for 8.3 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Bony struggled in the early stages of this season, but his starting spot now looks secure, and with Swansea not having won since Gameweek 3, his rediscovered eye for goal could prove key if they are to turn their fortunes around. However, the Swans’ following three fixtures after the Foxes meeting (eve, ARS, mci) may well deter investors until Gameweek 13.

Sigurdsson On The Slide
His performance against the Potters saw the playmaker leave the field early after serving up a fourth blank in the last five Gameweeks, as his early-season consistency certainly shows signs of waning. Sigurdsson’s recent international displays, allied with his 10-point haul in Gameweek 7, had many hoping he would be able to produce against Mark Hughes’ men, but a total of just nine successful passes in the final third and no shots registered was indicative of his minimal impact. With his form floundering and so many other midfield options flourishing right now, some may consider looking elsewhere once the Leicester game is out of the way.

Stoke Midfield Hit Their Stride
Victor Moses was again in the points yesterday after controversially winning his side’s first-half penalty. That’s now four assists in the Nigerian’s last four appearances, though, despite a favourable 5.5 price tag, he continues to bubble under with an ownership of just 0.4%. It was Charlie Adam who stepped up to take the spot kick and, though he had dropped deeper to cover for the absence of Glen Whelan, the Scot’s penalty-taking duties have ensured he has now netted in each of his last two outings. With Oussama Assaidi and Jon Walters also in the points for the Potters yesterday, their midfield is starting to show some appeal, though managers should be wary that they face a dire upcoming schedule (sou, WHM, tot, BUR , liv, mun, ARS) with those two home encounters looking the only attractive fixtures right now.

Fantasy Football Scout Community Champion needed.

As you may have noticed we’ve revamped our Scout Picks. Mark, myself, Paul and a community champion picked by you each week are up against each other.

We are now looking for Gameweek 9’s Scout Picks Community Champion to represent you and get one over on The Scouts.

To put yourself forward simply add in your Gameweek 9 Scout Picks here. For everyone else please upvote the poster you would like to represent you based on their picks.

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of budget. We are sticking to a budget of 83.5m. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team.

I’ll leave this vote for 24 hours and come back at 10am tomorrow to find out who is the community’s choice.

Once selected I’ll need you to email me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with your final scout picks and 200 word explanation (I’m happy to take bullet points) by Thursday 5pm at the latest. There is time to alter based on injuries on Friday daytime – just keep me updated by email. If your champion fails to submit their final team by this time then an assistant from our team of moderators and contributors will step in.

I had Lampard, Sanchez as well as Pelle and Aguero. Paul has Di Maria to go though....still time to snatch the lead.

For me the Lampard pick was my favourite. Two assists in under half an hour. The guy is still a legend. Even Gerrard brought in the points. Good gameweek for the old fogeys

Btw- thanks to Giggs Boson for his members table that pointed me to Lampard.

        not that you'll vote but...

Panti to get a start and work his Panti off for a clean sheet to win the starting job

Three defenders in high potential clean sheet games who all have attacking threat

Siggy - Leicester at home; Eriksen - hitting form with Newcastle at home; Barkley looked ready to catch form with an assist last week and goes to Burnley; the forgotten J-Mo is at home to Pulis-less Palace, expecting a goal and an assist to remind you he's good

Pelle - on fire and has Stoke at home; Bony - Leicester again; Vargas - will make Redknapp see sense with those two goals and make sure he never gets benched again with two more on Villa

The XI I have in mind here is the best XI, and not exactly a differential XI, because I'm supposed to pick the players who have form and fixture on their side, and ownership doesn't really matter. Upvote if you like it. 😉

      Foster,
      Bertrand, Coleman, Vlaar,
      Sigurdsson, Tadic, Chadli, Sanchez, Oscar,
      Aguero, Lukaku.

      * Foster - cheap keeper against a goal-shy Palace, picks himself.

      * In defence, Coleman ahead of Baines was a decision I made, and I have my reasons for that. Significantly more goal-threat, some assist-threat as well, and fresh enough (Remember Baines' performances post Europa weeks? ). Some SOT cover was essential, and Bertrand/Clyne is more of a toss-up, just pick Bertrand because of his recent form. As for Villa in defence, Vlaar's return solidifies the defence, and he's the guy who will get you more bonuses in case of a CS, which looks likely. Villa's early season form was brilliant, and now that their nightmare fixtures are over, they could keep a CS here.

      * Sigurdsson against defensive terrible Leicester. Must be a (c) choice for quite a few here. Tadic is the man-in-form, and Stoke no longer has that Pulis solidity anymore. Again, Sanchez is the best Arsenal attacker, and they are facing a team which just conceded eight. Another differential (c) choice I'd say. Chadli against Newcastle, I picked him ahead of Eriksen because he has looked potent enough without a goal in last two, and should do pretty well against the hapless Magpies. Oscar is my midfield differential - carrying significant goal threat, and in Costa's absence, the man expected to fill in his goalscoring shoes. Also on direct FKs now, a differential who could very well be in a lot of teams in the next couple of weeks.

      * Went for two strikers, in Costa's (likely) absence. It would have been criminal to not pick Aguero, so the other spot was up for grabs. I pick Lukaku - a man who could run riot against Burnley, and Barkley's return sounds better news for him. Burnley's defensive solidity seems to have disappeared as well, as they concede eight in three games, and well, Lukaku could very well be on many radars if Costa is absent for a long period.

Thanks for having the patience to read through. Cheers, and an upvote will do. 😉

Just had to tot that up as couldn't believe you could get this team into 83.5 but you have with plenty to spare. I'm actually genuinely worried about this team from a scout perspective. Looks a really good set of players.

Cheers, Jonty. I had Eriksen ahead of Chadli in my mind intitially, but had to stick with Chadli because of price constraints. And yeah, I think 83.5 is a lot to go with, especially with so many midfield big-hitters favorably priced.

Did I get an upvote from you there? 😉

This is a disgrace, a poor reflection of the community knowledge.
I've no problem doing this again, nothing quirky/no differentials just looking to maximise the weekly score.

The Community is getting routinely trounced by the Scouts. Instead of going for punts and gimmicks, we need to keep things simple, concentrating on form players with a good fixture. With that in mind, here are my picks for this week:

      Lloris
      Baines - Fernandez - Bertrand
      Sterling - Eriksen - Sigurdsson - Sanchez
      Aguero - Pelle - Berahino

Lloris is the top scoring keeper in FPL, and for good reason. He faces a struggling Newcastle side at the Lane, and has a good chance of a clean sheet, whilst he is always likely to pull off a few great saves if tested.

Baines is simply in irresistible form, and faces a Burnley side who have struggled in attack so far. His ability from set pieces will be supplemented by his forward runs, as he looks to take advantage of the space behind Trippier, often Burnley's main creative outlet down their right hand side.

Southampton have conceded just once at home this season, whilst Bertrand's regular forays forward at the weekend saw him pick up a bonus point, ahead of five team mates with attacking returns.

Another bonus magnet in the making is Federico Fernandez - he has matched or outscored his partner Williams in the BPS in each of his four starts. I'm backing the Swans to pick up a third home clean sheet against Leicester, who have we scored just once on their travels.

Leicester have also conceded more chances from set pieces than any other side this season. As well as their 6'3 Argentinian defender, this is likely to benefit Gylfi Sigurdsson. I expect his monopoly on set pieces and general quality in the final third to translate into yet another big points haul for the Iceman.

The other attackers pick themselves. Sterling and Eriksen have been their respective teams' main creative threats, and have good home fixtures. Sanchez is my pick as the most likely Arsenal plater to inflict further misery on Sunderland.

Pelle and Berahino have both already registered two braces at home this season, and again, have a good home fixture. Aguero scored four goals at the weekend, four! He simply cannot be overlooked against a West Ham side who have been more open this season. Last year, he managed 2 goals and an assist in this fixture. Who knows what he'll do this time around.

Finally someone who talks sense, I doubt you'll win because I'm learning that the community 'en masse' make ridiculous decisions based on popularity, 'differentials' and poetry. They voted for a terrible team last week that scored 39 points (+Falcao). Have an up vote anyway.

Better forward line than Nate or Saniul.
Lloris and Berahino are excellent choices who would have been in my team too.
But I would prefer to see Vlaar in your team instead of Fernandez.

Here's my list to usurp the dominance of the Scouts Picks and help the Community start the turnaround

      McCarthy (4.0)
      Coleman (6.9) - Chambers (4.6) - C. Dawson (4.6)
      Sanchez (10.3) - Hazard (9.9) Eriksen (7.8) Barkley (6.7)
      Aguero (12.4) - Pelle (8.1) - Bony (8.2)

      83.5 well spent 😀

      Forster
      Bertrand, Coleman, Baines
      Sanchez, Fabregas, Siggy, Chadli
      Aguero, Welbeck, Berahino

With the community falling behind a few double ups to capitalise on the fixtures could reduce the deficit. Baines and Coleman against Burnley and a double on the toughest defence in the league. Sanchez and Welbeck could rack up the points against Sunderland. Siggy, Chadli, Cesc and Berahino all have strong fixtures and Aguero needs no explanation.

COMMUNITY TEAM - REPPING FOR FFS MEMBERS' AREA ~ Really how helpful are they? 😉

Not sure if this will be allowed, but I'd love to represent the Community through the Member's Area? ( Besides the RMT 😉 )

Would be mainly using the wonderful Stats tables, looking at the most basic and agreed upon stats - ie. Chances Created, and Shots in the box. Probably just those two.

Won't mention the exact stats as well plus, the actual top few for those categories might not necessarily appear due to the restricted budget.

      Thoughts?

Its a good tactic - as this week showed. Lampard came from Giggs' Boson's members table. Tadic is a classic example of underlying members stats coming good.

I personally do this every week anyway for my picks.

Lampard. Was touting him around 1 week too early! People who listened would've got what they wanted though. 🙂

Yeah...true. We'll have to see if the Community finds it interesting.

Jonty, what do you think of a "Jumping Ships" piece? Transfer options that involve jumping off a popular "ship". E.g Sterling---->Eriksen, Sigurdsson--->Chadli?

Honest opinion would be great. 🙂

      Hi all

Throwing my hat into the ring 🙂 currently sitting on 795 OR, with 101 points this week (and ADM to play). Only making a note of this as at the moment, all my decisions seem to be going right and the community could use a lift.

      Team I'm drafting is:

      Fabianski

      Baines Chambers C. Dawson

      Siggy Sanchez Sterling Chadli

      Aguero Pelle Benteke

Open to comments and suggestions, let's make this a community team driven by my lucky streak!

Here is my logic . I think we , the community , are so far behind because we have taken such crazy punts . I believe the only way we can get out of this mess is to take even crazier punts . Take is why I have decided to include Adebayor , Benteke and Kolorov in the scout picks

      Kolorov , Coleman, Taylor

      Sanchez , Sterling , Siggy , Tadic

      Caulker - Baines - betrand
      Siggy - Oscar - tadic - sanchez - chadli
      Aguero - pele -

      Baines is self explanatory
Betrand can get BAPS and CS
Caulker is capable of returns at Both ends
Siggy is not in a great vein of form and has a great chance this weekend
Oscar is in amazing form playing in the whole for a free scoring outfit
Tadic is on top of the world at the moment
Chadli great differential and solid attacking option
Sanchez will continue to reliever while other assets are out with arsenals fixtures
Aguero is looking menancing and has pens in his locker
Pelle is a great target man for SOT and is surely very high on confidence with his recent call up

Not expecting any upvotes but I'll have a go:-

      Lloris
      Baines Williams Clyne
      Chadli Gerrard Tadic Sanchez
      Aguero Pelle Berahino

      * Defence - Lloris is the top keeper in FPL standings and in great form. Spurs welcome a Newcastle side struggling to score goals.
Baines has from going for him as well, he's creating chances for fun every game and welcoming a shy Burnley side with set-pieces in his locker.
Williams has the best bps potential in the Swans defence and hence I have picked him as I dont fancy Leicester to score.
Clyne part of a solid full of confidence Soton team. Im still backing him to come good over Bertrand who's been on the rise lately.

      * Midfield - Chadli is still one of the most advanced midfielders and has good form supporting his stats going into the game.
Tadic who has just exploded in a 8-0 thrashing of Sunderland also has the form and confidence to boost his underlying stats. He's on set-pieces as well.
The recent shift of Gerrard from the holding midfield role has made me pick him over Sterling(rotation risk). Gerrard is simply the 1st name on the Liverpool teamsheet. I fancy him to be under the radar and plunder the points with his forward forays(like his assist for Coutinho) helping him notch up points from open play apart from his superb set-pieces.
Sanchez for me is the main threat of the Gunners side and has form and set-pieces in his locker and looks set to take advantage of a depeted Sunderland side and a certain Welbeck who is known to stretch defence and make space for the other forward players.

      * Aguero showed again on Saturday that when fully fit and on song he is the best striker in this league. Simple pick really.
Pelle goes into this week's fixture in irresistible form helped with confidence from his debut for his national side last week. Stoke who have looked vulnerable at the back and with Soton in very good form Pelle cannot be missed.
Berahino is my last pick. Fending off competition from Welbeck and Bony due to his explosiveness. He has scored a brace in 2 home games against weak defences untuil now and with WBA picking up form under Irvine and Berahino continuing his good form for the U-21's in the Intn'l Break I fancy Berahino to plunder in the points against a leaky Palace who have Dann & now Delaney unavailable for the game.

Thanks if you had the patience to read through. Cheers! 😀

      Forster
      Baines, Dier, Dawson
      Henderson, Sanchez, Chadli, Hazard
      Aguero, Pelle, Adebayor

I make it comfortably under-budget. I only have three of these in my FPL XI, but I think I've gone for good defenders playing weaker attacking teams and forwards/midfielders playing iffy defences.

      MY TEAM

      Lloris
      Baines, Clyne, Williams
      Eriksen, Sterling, Sanchez, Tadic
      Agüero, Welbeck, Austin

      £ 83.4

My first attempt at this thing, so please bear with me.

      Guzan
      Dawson, Baines, Bertrand
      Hazard, Walcott, Sigurdsson, Eriksen
      Pellè, Agüero, Welbeck

Going for 3-4-3 with Guzan, Dawson and Walcott as differential.

Guzan (qpr) - Villa's defend is one that is tough one to crack, they are organized against the lower club fixtures, even City can't properly break them. 2 cleansheet against lower side (Stoke, Newcastle) and surprisingly good saves rate in the last 3 games against top team (Chelsea, City, Everton) 12 saves.

Dawson (CRY) - Playing at home, high chances of keeping a cleansheet and one of WBA goal threat too.

Baines (bur) - Playing against one of the shot shy team this week meaning Baines gonna have more attacking duties than defensive one, with his current form and set-piece takers, no brainer. A good chances for cleansheet too.

Bertrand (STO) - Having a good form this season, last game against Sunderland showed even without goal or assist, he can sneaked a bonus points off his offensive teammates.

Hazard (mun) - One for the big games, look at what he can produced against Arsenal last few week back. On penalty too. With United current backline, he can makes few run past them like he did against Arsenal to win the penalty.

Walcott (sun) - Fantasy darling. Obviously need to be match fit first. His pace gonna have some advantage against Sunderland's defence.

Sigurdsson (LEI) - If he buried last night chances after he round Begovic, he will have 2 goals and 6 assists, no midfield at his price range comes near him in terms of goals + assists.

Eriksen (NEW) - His recent forms and his performance against City showed that he can only get better, while people be swarming with Chadli - having Eriksen in this team is a good route to take. On set pieces too.

Pelle (STO) - 6 goals so far with all the goals coming from opposition lesser than Soton (based on last season table). He is Soton goal outlet so far, all the attack will come through him (either with link up play or the finishing job)

Aguero (whu) - Only failed to find the net one 2 occasion this season. And have one of the best conversion rate so far this season. No brainer.

Welbeck (sun) - Lord Welbeck. Nothing much to say about this player, full of surprises, if he doesn't know what he is doing, how can Sunderland defense that leaked 8 goals anticipate anything? Pure genius.

      £83 total. Not bad right?

      Here's something different:

      Foster

      Baines Bertrand Coleman

      Oscàr Eriksen Tadic Diamè

      Aguero Bony Benteke

      81.5

      * Foster: As explained by others, he's cheap and he plays Palace, simple choice.

      * Baines AND Coleman: Yes, risky and maybe a little too much but it's a case of high risk high reward. They play Burnley, Baines got three assists in the last two games(and even a penalty that he missed) and he might be in for even more points this time, while Coleman just got back, has a lower ownership, even more goal threat than his twin and he's slightly cheaper.

      * Bertrand: You need a Saints defender, he's in better form than Clyne and he's cheaper. If he won't get a clean sheet he might still get points from attacking returns.

      * Oscàr: He seems to have regained his form, he's 1.6M cheaper than Hazard, 1.3M cheaper than Cesc, he has a very low ownership of 2.9% and he plays United in a game where Chelsea could score at least two goals.

      * Eriksen: 20 points in the last two games despite the fact that he played against Southampton and City, that'd be enough to justify his inclusion in your team. Besides that, he's price has dropped to 7.8 and his low ownership makes him a good differential against NCastle who managed to get only one CS in six games.

      * Tadic: 4.6% ownership, he's always lurking around the area, he makes the right passes and he got 23 points against Sunderland. Sure, he won't get that many points in the next four GWs but now that he has exploded it's difficult not to see any returns from him, especially when he's participating so much in his team's actions.

      * Diamè: What a player he is...FOUR goals in the last five games, owned only by 2.0% of players and if we look at the 16 best midfielders of the game at the moment, he's the cheapest with a price of only 5.4M. He scored a goal against Arsenal so why shouldn't he be able to score against Liverpool who conceded TWO goals to QPR? He's a beast.

      * Aguero: One of the ten best players in the world, he scores while having breakfast and he has a much much much lower ownership than Costa. Not much else to say...

      * Bony: Why him over Sigurdsson? Well, mostly because he seems to have found some form with two goals in the last two games but also because he could be another good differential with a 4.0% ownership and a game against Leicester and their weak defense.

      * Benteke: Another risky move, Villa hasn't scored in four games but they played Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Everton while now they have to play QPR. Benteke has not regained his form yet but with a match against one of the weakest defenses in the league this looks like the right opportunity for an interesting gamble. Think about the possible rewards with an ownership of only 0.3% and a price of 7.9.

Balotelli isn't a lone striker and playing him in that role makes everyone look bad. Hopefully Rodgers realises that at some point and puts Borini up with him. Unlikely though.

    Hey all,

Any Aussies playing A-League Fantasy recommend a forum or site like this one re fantasy chat?

Re foxsports game, anyone got thoughts on trading out Villa for Keogh to free up funds to upgrade Saba and Cernak in midfield... Got 2 free trades this week. And then looking at Saba back when he returns from suspension.

Both Villa and Keogh have similar fixtures (away to Victory and Adelaide). Perth then look to have the better fixtures in the following 4 weeks. Obviously it's weighting up the class of Villa against if Keogh can keep up the form...

Other option potentially Broich out for say Koren. Not as much funds freed up as Villa out for Keogh, but still enough to upgrade Saba. Leaves me shorter on coin re upgrading Cernak but.

Nice. You must be well up there!

            I'm with -
            Saba, Marinkovic, Broich, Finkler (Cernak)
            Villa, Gameiro, Djite

Villa to Keogh allows the upgrading of Saba (will then bring back in for Marinkovic with spare funds). Broich out gives me less wriggle room. And also unsure what the go is with Koren, he'd be one of the options to come in.

It's one that could go either way. Right now, my gut feeling is that I should bring in Kun for him, as I cant bare to watch him go on another rampage, plus I have Fab as Chelsea cover. I suppose pick the option that feels most right.

  11. The Governor

Isn't one of the first rules of FPL, "don't pick anyone who isn't nailed on"

This is one of the reasons why I'm ditching Costa for Aguero. I'm not "scared" of not owning Costa away at United or Liverpool, but I am worried that he won't play at all if I were to keep him...

    1. Billy Gilmore
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

There's a difference between "don't pick someone who isn't nailed on" and "don't keep someone who you're unsure if they'll be fit enough to play"

As a Kolarov fan I have to say I disagree with your rule 😛

    2. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years
      9 years, 6 months ago

eh.. Costa is as nailed on as they come. that rule applies to the likes of Charlie Adam, Kolarov etc. I think u've confused nailed on with the term injured

        • 14 Years

          • 14 Years
          9 years, 6 months ago

you misunderstood the rule.. dont get players who you are not sure are nailed on in general is the rule.. not cause of an injury. Press conference on Friday to clear up his injury issue. if not then you get someone of the bench. Remy for eg is not nailed on

There are 2 types of people in this World, those who look back, and those who look forward.

His first 7 gameweeks were sensational, I agree. But now, his hamstring has finally caught up with him. Will he play this weekend? Nobody knows. That's the problem.

        Will Aguero play this weekend?

        84 (hat trick)
        -10

basically since the arsenal goal you need 2 hands to count the sitters he has missed, the one where he was offside v arsenal right at the end, 2 or 3 v sporting, a couple v slovakia and a couple v luxembourg. before then he'd missed maybe 1 or 2 good chances in 7 games

    2 FTs, 1.1 itb

Any ideas on what to do assuming Costa is fit? Thinking that I want a SOT attacking player but not sure how to fit them in. Welbz > Pelle too sideways? Tadic/Mane can come in and also facilitate a Baines move but who would I lose from the midfielders?

      Team for next week:

      Krul,
      Ivanovic, Clyne, Baines,
      Sigurdsson, Fabregas, Sterling, Di Maria,
      Costa, Welbeck, Pelle.

Subs: Mannone, Boyd, Wisdom, N Taylor.

1 FT, £0.2m in the bank.

How do I get Aguero in this team?

he plays alongside Huddlestone who is the more defensive player. I don't have access to the stat section but he bombs forward a lot. Playing the worst defense in the league next too.
