Leighton Baines rescues a point for Everton away to the Black Cats. Alexis Sanchez’ goal streak continues, Gylfi Sigurdsson notches for the first time since the season opener, Nacer Chadli grabs his sixth of the campaign, whilst Newcastle’s defence bring home the points once again.

Baines Delivers Yet Again

Leighton Baines was amongst the points once more yesterday, with a 76th minute penalty earning Everton a point on the road at Sunderland. The left-back has notched attacking returns in seven of his last nine, and despite teammate Seamus Coleman earning an assist at the Stadium of Light, Baines continues to look the one premium defender worth investing in right now: indeed, only Alexis Sanchez now has more points than the 7.3-priced Toffees’ full-back, even though Roberto Martinez’s outfit have only managed three clean sheets up until this point.

Black Cats Forced into Rearguard Rotation

The big news on the teamsheet yesterday was that Costel Pantilimon kept his place ahead of Vito Mannone between the sticks, and subsequently frustrated the visitors with a total of six saves across the 90 minutes. Elsewhere, with Patrick van Aanholt ruled out for up to three months with a shoulder injury, Gus Poyet opted to shift Anthony Reveillere to left-back, allowing Wes Brown a route back into the centre of defence after being dropped against Crystal Palace last time out. However, the pecking order in the Black Cats’ rearguard remains to be seen once Billy Jones returns and, with four tough fixtures to come after their trip to Leicester (CHE, MCI , liv, WHM), few will be looking at their assets in spite of their recent upturn in form.

Perez Form Continues

Newcastle recorded their fourth straight league win with a 2-0 victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns yesterday. With Alan Pardew continuing to be cautious with Papiss Cisse’s knee problems, the 4.8-valued Ayoze Perez grabbed the headlines yet again after scoring for the third game in a row – the manner of his finish certainly suggest a striker high on confidence right now and with showdowns against QPR, West Ham and Burnley in the next three, it’s difficult to see the youngster being dropped to the bench, given his fine form.

Magpies Rearguard Holds Firm

Newcastle are mainly demanding our attentions at the back, though, with yesterday’s clean sheet ensuring that it’s only one goal conceded in their last four. Daryl Janmaat was the main man in defence after earning assists for both his side’s goals in addition to the maximum bonus points, whilst skipper Fabricio Coloccini arrived on the radar with a goal before being withdrawn late on due to a knock. Intriguingly, Paul Dummett moved to centre-half to cover for the injured Steven Taylor in spite of the availability of Mike Williamson – at 4.1 to Janmaat’s 5.0, the versatile Dummett now seems to be nailed-on and has started each of the last seven.

Chadli Strikes as Kane Stumbles

Mauricio Pochettino handed Harry Kane his first league start after moving back to a 4-2-3-1 formation at home to Stoke yesterday. Whilst the youngster was unable to grab the opportunity and drew a blank, Nacer Chadli again scored for Spurs as he continues to look their one viable option at the moment. The Belgian is now up to third for midfielders after grabbing his sixth of the season in the 2-1 loss and, at a price of just 6.6, continues to prosper in spite of his side’s struggles. With five excellent fixtures in their next seven (hul, CPL, swa, BUR, lei), Chadli is surely set to earn further investment, with only 15% of FPL managers currently owning the in-form Belgian.

Bojan Finding His Feet

Mark Hughes chose to hand summer signing Bojan a second consecutive start, and was rewarded as the Spaniard finally opened his account for the season with a mazy run and finish, suggesting he’s now starting to settle in to his new surroundings. Jon Walters, meanwhile, grabbed Stoke’s second and has now managed a goal or assist in three of his last four. However, though the visit of Burnley to the Britannia in Gameweek 12 could prove prosperous, the Potters then face five tough clashes in their subsequent six (liv, mnu, ARS, CHE, eve) and managers are unlikely to be tempted by their assets for the long-term.

Sanchez Still Firing Despite Gunners’ Form

Alexis Sanchez’s unrivalled vein of form continued as he scored once more as Arsenal stumbled away to Swansea. The Chilean has now totaled six goals in the last four Gameweeks, picking up maximum bonus on each occasion, and with Angel Di Maria struggling over that same period, we could see a big swing in investment over the international break. Danny Welbeck continues to tick over, too, with a goal or assist in three of his last four now after setting up Sanchez in yesterday’s defeat. Though the former Man United man is clearly still being overshadowed by his team-mate, at 7.3 he is looking very good value, with the Gunners’ forthcoming schedule in mind (MUN, wba, SOU, sto, NEW).

Sigurdsson Back in the Goals

Gylfi Sigurdsson is back up to fourth in the Fantasy Premier League midfield standings after his unstoppable free-kick set Swansea on their way to a comeback win over Arsenal. That was the Icelander’s first goal since Gameweek 1, and having been sold by over 90,000 in the last two Gameweeks, the 6.7-priced man served up a timely reminder of his ability to produce regardless of the fixture – a trait that is sure to come in handy when the Swans visit Man City in Gameweek 12. With three home encounters in the next four after the Etihad clash (CPL, QPR, TOT), and Wilfried Bony’s minutes now surely under threat from match-winner Bafetimbi Gomis, owners of Sigurdsson are now likely to scrap their exit route plans as Garry Monk’s side look to take advantage of those kind Liberty fixtures.

As each week passes and my captain choices fail me, I'd prefer the captain to be removed (personally)......but I'm just trying to understand who enjoys this element and who hates it?

Thought I'd cover both end of the spectrum by asking about it, rather than saying 'DOUBLE CAPTAIN POINTS P*SSES ME OFF)....not productive for a monday, really.

I can understand why we need captain + bench, but especially bench just never works for me so removing those would help my success, but would also make game much more boring.

Yep, I didn't have Boyd from the bench that week he happens to score...those lucky bst...

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Essential watch.

A few weeks back Costa was essential. Now Sanchez seems essential. Who if anyone is essential?

For me I think neither are. I've been thinking about this ever since I declared Di Maria essential a few weeks back. Attackers in form and with good fixtures are essential for a short period of time. Sanchez was over the last few weeks, Costa was at the start. There is a good case for labelling Aguero as essential though - even when ManC are in poor form he can deliver.

Looking at the fixtures I don't think Sanchez is essential...he will be when Arsenal have better fixtures though. Costa has good fixtures, but Fabregas and even Hazard offer good cover, so I'm not sure Costa falls into the essential bracket anymore.

If any player is to have the tag 'essential' for me it would be Baines. He was the player I pinpointed as essential for my team a couple of weeks ago, based on ownership and form and its been proved right. I think it would be very difficult for anyone with aspirations of a high finish to succeed without him - there are simply no other defenders who can do what he can do.

Another factor in him being essential is that it tends to be injury rather than form that curtails Aguero's points potential.

Aguero and Sanchez for me. Costa can be covered by Chelsea mids, Baines can be covered by a good defensive rotation that guarantee clean sheets every GW.
Aguero and Sanchez are in a great form but neither City or Arsenal are. They are delivering every GW and great Captaincy options.

Well that is right, but people who went with double Saints defenders in the previous GWs covered Baines points. I can see that happening in the next few GWs with West Ham defense, there is always a way.

Well Baines and the Saints defenders are matching much dearer mids and forwards. With Siggy, Chadli, Downing, Sakho, Austin, Berahino etc funds really aren't an issue.

For now that is true. Anyway everybody has his way to play the game, I always prefer to spread the cash upfront and go cheap in the back ( not so cheap however), and it is paying off for me.
It is always easier to get the big hitter you want immediately if your funds are in the same position.

For the next gameweek. The gameweek after an int is a funny one anyway. Once through that I'll hopefully still have two frees and plan a -4 in gwk 13 for the big fixture shifts away from Saints and towards the likes of QPR for value. Even with lots of rises and falls I should be able to ditch Tadic, Pelle and one other for Sanchez Austin/Sakho and one other no problem.

I'm not ditching Saints players before a match against villa to shoehorn in a player up against ManU - yes I know its ManU but their defence is still quite stingy - even if a little makeshift.

I don't believe anyone is ever truly essential. You could argue that Baines, Sanchez, Costa and Aguero are, but not having one of them may allow you to upgrade elsewhere and make up the points.

I do agree though that I don’t really see a reason not to have Baines.

For me Aguero, Costa, Sanchez and Baines are essential. Those 4 offer a strong spine to your team with other cheapies doing well to fit in around them.

You could argue that if you are not going to captain Costa then you can cover his points elsewhere but I would rather have him than not.

If fit then nobody can keep up with Baines, Sanchez and Aguero. I could argue that the likes of Chadli and Siggy can keep up with Di Maria, Fab, Hazard at a much lower price.

sanchez fast becoming essential. sure his form might dip, but if he keps on scoring? the fact he is an oop mid also adds to that

costa - i could take him or leave him,too many question marks over his fitness to be essential

Sanchez, unless Wenger changes formation when Giroud returns and Walcott is starting. He'd still probably still be essential then anyway.

      Kun.

If Everton can start keeping regular clean sheets then Baines could be. However I don't think he'll maintain his current attacking PPG. I wait to be proven wrong though.

I don't think Baines can ever be labelled as essential, as many people just refuse to spend that kind of money on a defender.

Persoanlly I've really enjoyed the fact none of my mini league rivals own him, and he has been a key player for me, but not essential, no.

Suarez was essential last season, there's an argument for Aguero being essential this season, but i don't think he's quite there yet

    17. Jafalad
      • 15 Years
      11 years, 1 month ago

The term "essential" is a misleading one.

It needs to be broken down by time. There are "essential" all season long players (think Suarez, Bale, Ronaldo, et al) and there are temporary "essential" players.

If we look at this season's cast list, I would classify Siggy, Baines, Costa and Aguero as season-long essential players. Possibly, Fabregas, Sanchez, Pelle and the STH defenders also. Most seem to have them in their teams.

Someone made a very good point about Siggy earlier. The reason I have him in my team-apart from form-is he allows me to afford much pricier players. This has been very overlooked by many.

Temporary essential players are a much harder breed to classify. A lot depends on form, maintaining form and the team they play for. ADM seems to fit this bill. Austin is another I suspect.

      Interesting topic anyway.

I would define it as 'season keeper' and 'essential' simply to avoid confusion. As Jonty described, essential is more of a temporary thing dependant on form and fixtures.

No Scout Pick Community Champion vote this week due to the international break.

That will be launched next Monday ahead of Gameweek 12.

Meanwhile here’s an update on Gameweek 11.

Another great week for the community. Toon Army HTL got the joint highest gameweek score with Paul of 74. He also now has the highest gameweek score so far and is the man to beat for the £100 top gameweek score voucher this season. I got 73, while Mark got 65.

    Here’s the overall standings now.

    Jonty 683
    Mark 669
    Paul 665

A repost from last night for those who might be interested in such things

I sent an email to FFF a couple of weeks ago requesting they add a search for transfer trends by "This Gameweek"...They promised to do so...Well it's done...Goodo !!

    http://fantasyfootballfix.com/transfers/

Click on the "select time period" > "current gameweek" > select position > Load data.

It will reveal which transfers are being done in the game for the current GW for those who like to play the diifs...or not diffs...

    Forster

    Haz, Cesc, ADM, Siggy
    Aguero, Pelle, Sakho

    Subs: Boyd, CDawson, Naylor

    C: Moore + Cesc > Yun/Saylor + Sanchez -4

    Fabianski

    Tadic/Siggy/Alexis/Fabregas

    1 FT, 0.4 million banked

    Currently torn between,

    A) Hutton and Fabregas to Yun and Hazard (-4)

LVG on why he took ADM off early

“He has played today in a very small space and he is a dribbler but sometimes you cannot dribble. You have to make it a pass game, and Di Maria is not a player who wants to give a pass every time he gets the ball. But in this case we needed that and not dribbles. Therefore he lost the ball a lot of times and that was not good for the balance of the team."

ADM will still be a starter but early subs could become a feature

I really thought he is a serious manager
But his tactics, subs decisions, during match behaviour, interviews with him shows that he doesnt have a clue what is he doing

    How is Walcott looking?

Fit? Lively? Or still a bit out of sorts?

At least until he starts one and shows some promise. Could be a while coming off an ACL.

Tadic –> Sanchez somehow and it's a good midfield.

Any City fans on at the moment?

James Milner.... cheap and carries huge threat when he plays. But keeps on randomly getting dropped (and City perform badly)

    Stick or twist?

sticking with navas as a starter over Milner has cost City so much this season

      Twist.

Nasri is back and Silva back soon as well.

Moreover Milner is never a FPL points magnet anyways.
