After reviewing the Goalkeepers and Defenders, the third instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees midfielders come under the microscope.

Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve looked at the top ten midfielders for points per game in 2010/11 and analysed their scores in terms of reliability. While the likes of Rafael Van der Vaart impresses in his debut season, there’s plenty room for Florent Malouda -despite his overall haul of 186- to improve his consistency for Chelsea this upcoming season.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

For having Barton... yea, the rest, no!

Barton could be great in a few weeks, we just need to see what happens with him first.

Ah I'm gonna bench him wk. 1 but I reckon he offers excellent value at 6.0. Think I read somewhere that the dust's settled on whatever went down with him and his club recently. Personally, I like the guy although maybe that's not reason enough for a selection..............

    Given / (Foster)
    Samba / Kompany / Hughes / (Jags)
    Bale / Taraabt / Moses / Nzog / (Tiote)
    Bent / Drogba / Rooney

      No offense intended, Nutmeg.

This league, it seems to me, is infinitely inscrutable with its lineups and injury lines ... a large percentage of the game is just guessing the starters correctly.

Some coaches might announce earlier, but those aren't actually definitive until the gamesheet before the game. Some managers sow disinformation.

3-5-2 & 3-4-3 seem most popular, around here at least. But I think any formation can be successful, depending on your strategy and purchases, of course.

BPs will defo affect the choice, for most, but right now we're kinda shooting in the dark as FPL has changed its method of distributing them for this year. So many guesses there now, as well.

I will say, this site helps 1000% towards answering/predicting lineups and things like free kick takers, etc. Have you seen the 'Team News' tab up top? Good place to start on a Thursday to check for injuries, suspensions, anticipated line-ups, etc.

It's all info available elsewhere, but funneled and categorized for you here. It'll save you hours of trawling through dodgy news sites and fan bloggers.

End of last season he was starting all the home games in the hole and if it weren't for his performances swansea probably wouldn't be in the epl. However pratley was usually preferred for the away games. Pratley's gone but I think the tactic will remain where they go 3 cm's away from home and use dobbie as a trequarterista for the home games.
So yes he's a risk, when he plays though he's the main creator and a quality finisher.

I reckon Rooney is the better pick as he's less injury prone, and should produce around the same output per game. The most annoying thing in Fantasy Football is when your player goes down early on in a game, scores 1 point and is your captain, then you have to waste a transfer next week. Avoid it.

I haven't actually got him in my squad at the moment, but I think he'll do well. Injuries permitting I'd say he's good for 6 or 7 goals over the course of the season with a smattering of assists thrown in. I actually think Wolves will be a pretty solid team this season, at least at home.

He's not played 2 full seasons, nothing like it... he's played 442 and 815 minutes over the last 2 seasons. The expectation is that he'll not only be a first choice player this time around, but that he'll be Wigan's main creative player. He's shown good form in pre-season, and whilst it requires a leap of faith of sorts, he's not an unreasonable punt at 5m.

Have to say I don't particularly like it, too many risks for me.

You've got 6 players who're new to their club, 5 outfield.

You've got regular starter doubts in Ramsey, Drogba, Gervinho, even possibly Downing.

You've got 5 promoted club players, 3 is way too many for your defence.

Nope sorry don't like it. It will either be fantastic or diabolical.

Yeah, it's pretty risky, that's a fair shout.

The 3 promoted defenders don't worry me too much- there's no obvious value in any 4-4.5m defenders elsewhere, I can just play the one with the most favourable home fixture, which for the first 5 weeks gives me BOL WIG SUN NEW WBA. The other 2 will be 2nd and 3rd subs.

Ramsey's spot is dependent on how the Cesc/Nasri sagas go over the next week.

It's not settled by any means.... I hadn't really noticed how many of the players were new signings, that's definitely food for thought.

I reckon that the Drog will start against Stoke. AVB is a smart guy and must realise that Drogba is a better defender from set pieces than Torres.

Drogba/Holt/Decent mid would be a better option for you.

I'm still torn between Drog/RVP/Rooney for my striker to add to Carroll and Holt.

De Gea is new to the EPL and his first few fixtures are tough.

I'd go for a goalie rotation policy that costs less, or get Cech or Hart in if I wanted to play one goalie for the season.

If you get Hart then you can/should lose Kompany.

The best rotating goalies until GW9 are Given and Kenny.

Some people are going for Given/Ruddy but I think that's a false economy.

    Given (Ruddy)
    Cole, Kompany, Bramble (Orr, Simpson)
    Malouda, Silva, O’Hara, Moses (Sessegnon)
    Rooney, Carroll, Holt

    1 - Do you prefer
    A - Ronney, Carroll, Malouda
    B - RVP, Drogba, Nani

2 - Shall I risk and put Benayoun instead of O Hara (and Downgrade Sess on the bench) for the first GW.

I want rooney but i have to make sacrifices in my MF> 🙂

I can't choose a clear winner from the two teams I've constructed. First choice seems safer yet the midfield appears to be lacking. The second choice is riskier as Suarez isn't nailed on to start, Swansea and Dyer have a tough start to the season, and I haven't heard anything about the form of Lampard. Help me out?

DJ over Holt is a good idea as DJ has already proven himself. I don't have enough $$$ for N'Zogbia or he would be in, but Brunt is in charge of set-pieces and I'll take that.

Does nobody thank anyone for advice on their RMT's any more?

It signifies the decline of western civilisation to me. 🙂

I couldn't reply to your last post, Jonny. This forum software runs out of steam as soon as you get to X number of replies, where X is too small a number. 🙁

The risks that you take when loading up with players new to the EPL are:

              a) Newly promoted teams can contain a Charlie Adam or a Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

              b) Newly transferred players can turn out to be a Boselli or a Van der Vart.

So this season I have decided to start with proven players and only have three punts. One of whom will spend all season on my bench until I play my first wildcard. Even then he may still be warming the pine.

You have five in your team, which I think is too risky.

Normally I'd agree, it's just that a lot of the "proven" players have big downsides going for them
                (a) don't have decent opening fixtures (Nani, VDV)
                (b) have competition with for places (Drogba, Nani)
                (c) are incredibly expensive (Lampard, Baines, A.Cole)
                (d) are at new clubs (N'Zogbia, Downing, Young)

I'm finding that, due to point (c), I'm having to take a lot more gambles than I'd like to.

You can actually pick a bunch of solid, proven Premier League players though, with fewer punts. Like I said, I have only 3, and that may change to two in the next few days.

I don't think that proven EPL players moving to other clubs are a major risk because they've played the teams that they're joining at least a couple of times in most cases.

There are proven options, to be sure, but none that massively excite me. I guess it's asking too much to have a squad that's full of exciting players.

Midfield in particular seems to be the problem area: there seems to be solid options from 7.5m upwards, lots of risky but potentially explosive 5-6m options, and then this grey area of O'Hara/Duff/Brunt type options who have been around, scored reasonably, but do nothing much for me....

Good chat anyway Horizontal, thanks a lot for letting me bounce my ideas off you!

                      No problem, Jonny.

Changed my team yet again, hopefully for the last time, but I doubt it.
