Scout Scribbles – Sturridge Close to Reds Return

Daniel Sturridge returns to training for Liverpool. Tottenham’s Kyle Walker steps up his recovery, Hull’s injury situation starts to ease, Romelu Lukaku nets for Belgium, Sergio Aguero helps Argentina to a narrow win over Croatia, whilst Ron Vlaar limps off for Holland.

Sturridge Back in Training for Reds

The Liverpool forward gave Brendan Rodgers reason for optimism yesterday after finally returning to training as he steps up his recovery from a calf complaint. Due to the current international break, Sturridge won’t be involved in full training until next week, though, when the rest of the Reds squad return from competition.

The Scout Says: Having won two of the first three Gameweeks with Sturridge on board, Liverpool have triumphed just twice in the subsequent eight as their early-season promise quickly fades. Priced at 11.2, a potential return for Sturridge would threaten to shake up the frontline pecking order across the Fantasy games if he can quickly rediscover his form. Certainly, the fixtures are on his side – Rodgers’s side have Palace, Stoke, Leicester and Sunderland in the next four and with their talisman back on board, Raheem Sterling’s prospects could also be set for an upturn. The youngster scored in two of the first three but has netted just once since – with over 450,000 FPL managers parting company in the last three Gameweeks, he’s now back at his original starting price of 8.5 from a season high of 9.0.

Walker Nears Tottenham Comeback

Reports suggest the defender could be back first-team training next week as he closes in on a return to action. Walker is believed to be training with the Spurs Under 21 squad this week and, providing he suffers no setbacks, may even be in the frame for the Gameweek 12 trip to Hull.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind Kyle Naughton is set to serve a two-match ban after earning his second red card of the season against Stoke, Mauricio Pochettino will be relieved by yesterday’s news. Walker has failed to feature since March due to a pelvic problem and whilst the Spurs boss utilised Erik Dier at right-back on occasion earlier this term, the summer signing has fallen out of favour in recent weeks and has been benched for the last two Gameweeks – indeed, Dyer’s decision to sit out England U21 duties this week to avoid featuring at right-back underlines just how uncomfortable the youngster is with the role . Walker is now down to 5.8 in FPL but with a single clean sheet in nine, Pochettino’s chopping and changing has done little to improve his side’s solidity – Danny Rose (5.0) is the most secure of their defensive starters but, given their current woes, few will be jumping on board any time soon.

Injuries Ease for Tigers

Steve Bruce could welcome back a trio of regulars for Hull’s upcoming home clash with Spurs, according to reports. Number one Allan McGregor is back in full training after recovering from a shoulder problem, whilst Michael Dawson and Nikica Jelavic have both stepped up their recoveries from ankle and knee problems and are expected to return to first-team training next week.

The Scout Says: Dawson’s likely return would be a major boost to Bruce, bearing in mind Curtis Davies is currently doubtful with a back injury that forced him off at Burnley last time around. Whilst Hull have been relatively resilient in the last three without Dawson and conceded just twice, it’s fair to say Jelavic’s absence has been far more detrimental – the Tigers have scored in only one of the last four Gameweeks without him on board. The Croatian’s strong start to the season had seen him strike four times in the first seven, whilst strike partner Abel Hernandez had netted two in four alongside him and a return to action will surely confine Hatem Ben Arfa to bench-warming duties again; the Frenchman had started two of the first three without Jelavic as Bruce turned to a 3-5-1-1 formation but was ousted from the XI at Turf Moor in Gameweek 11. Fixtures-wise, though, showdowns against Spurs, United, Everton and Chelsea in the next five suggests points may be hard to come by.

Vlaar Adds to Villa Defensive Woes

Paul Lambert will be sweating over the availability of his skipper after he was forced off midway through the first-half of Holland’s clash with Mexico last night.

The Scout Says: A potential injury to Vlaar merely adds to Villa’s concerns, with Philippe Senderos (calf) and Nathan Baker (back) both doubtful for the Gameweek 12 home match against Southampton. Given that Alan Hutton is also injured, the worst case scenario would see Villa square up to the Saints without three of their first-choice back-four next time around – surely enough to persuade Southampton’s Fantasy owners to hold until the schedule takes a turn for the worse in Gameweek 13. A clean sheet against West Ham last weekend was Villa’s first in seven attempts but if Vlaar is also sidelined, few will be willing to take a punt despite their fixtures improving (bur, cpl, LEI, wba) after the clash with Ronald Koeman’s side.

Willian Stars in Samba Rout

City midfielder Fernandinho joined Chelsea trio Willian, Oscar and Filipe Luis in Brazil’s starting line-up in a 4-0 demolition of Turkey last night. Whilst Luis played the full 90 minutes, the three midfielders were subbed off midway through the second period, with Willian serving up a goal and assist before being replaced by Douglas Costa.

The Scout Says: In all likelihood, it’ll take more than last night’s performance to persuade Jose Mourinho that Willian is worthy of a regular starting berth for Chelsea. The Brazilian has featured in the Blues first XI on six occasions thus far and offers little of the security of pitch time we are afforded by the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and, in recent weeks, Oscar. Frustratingly, when handed the minutes he can produce – Willian has played from start to finish twice and grabbed a goal and assist on one of those occasions, but it’ll likely take a spate of injuries before Mourinho relies on the Brazilian week-in, week-out.

Aguero Key to Argentina Win

The City striker played a part in his country’s 2-1 win over Croatia before being replaced just after the hour mark. An effort from Cristian Ansaldi found the net after deflecting off Aguero, who then earned the penalty for Lionel Messi’s winner, in a match that also saw three Premier League-based defenders (Pablo Zabaleta, Federico Fazio and Santiago Vergini) play from start to finish, whilst United’s Angel di Maria was afforded 77 minutes before making way.

The Scout Says: Aguero and Di Maria owners will be relieved both made it through unscathed in last night’s Upton Park encounter. Luckily for those Fantasy managers holding Argentina players, we have no worries over long-haul flights next week either – the South Americans’ clash against Portugal on Tuesday evening takes place at Old Trafford. The two popular Fantasy assets have played a significant part in the FPL transfer market since the previous Gameweek – whilst Aguero is the most sought-after forward after taking his tally to 12 for the season with a brace against QPR, Di Maria is second only to Raheem Sterling amongst midfielders for transfers out, having produced just two assists in his last four.

Lukaku Nets in Belgium Triumph

Everton’s record signing replaced Eden Hazard at the break and grabbed a goal on 73 minutes in Belgium’s 3-1 friendly win over Iceland. Lukaku was one of nine Premier League players to turn out for Marc Wilmots’ side, with Thibaut Courtois, Toby Alderweireld, Marouane Fellaini, Christian Benteke and Adnan Januzaj amongst those named in the XI – the latter pair grabbed an assist before making way in the second half.

The Scout Says: Having failed to score in each of the first three Gameweeks, Lukaku has since notched in four of the last eight for Everton. Still owned by only 9% of FPL managers, the fixtures fall in the big Belgian’s favour, with West Ham, Spurs, Hull and QPR in the next five, and with Graziano Pelle owners considering their options when Southampton’s schedule turns nasty in Gameweek 13, the 9.1-priced Toffees forward may yet find his way into Fantasy plans. Hazard’s owners will be delighted with his 45-minute cameo, though the Chelsea midfielder is likely to feature more prominently in Sunday’s Euro Qualifier with Wales. Elsewhere, Gylfi Sigurdsson was an unused sub for the beaten visitors.

🙂 Yeah, a CHE defender could be a wise addition for their decent run.

Which of the 2 cheapies would you lose though?

Oh, and I can just afford JT over Azpil if he is the better CHE defender?

Well, as you know, I don't do Terry. BUT, he has started going up for corners, etc., again:

I would lose Hutton, as Wisdom's fixtures are better.

Not so sure about the fixtures for Hutton vs Wisdom though.

WBA 4th worst and AVL 2nd best in the ticker up to the Jan WC.....

Fixture wise, I'm leaning to keep Hutton.

I feel it's one week soon to lose Pelle, but the team looks strengthened by C.

  4. Sturridge to smash the template?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Sturridge to smash the template?

A template is emerging that is so far proving successful. With value midfielders and strikers a popular template has been to have a budget striker alongside the seemingly undroppable Aguero and Costa. In midfield Sanchez is key with the Chilean supplemented with cheaper midfielders such as Chadli and Sigurdsson. This allows money to be freed up to afford Baines.

But can Sturridge smash that up? At 11m he is expensive but has a fine record and good fixtures to come. If he comes back within a game or two and starts scoring do you plan to break up your template teams to get him in? Is Sturridge/Costa/Aguero feasible - or do you have to dump one of Costa or Aguero? If it is feasible do you have to make sacrifices in defence and midfield?

Remember Fantasy Football evolves each gameweek and last season many had three top premium strikers throughout the season. And how long will the likes of Chadli and Downing perform?

Not for me, he's over priced, pool don't look great, injury prone and I wouldn't feel comfortable putting the armband on him. Sterling is the pool option because he frees up a striker slot and is 2.5 cheaper.

The big 3 up top is the way to go, but I think only high value teams will be able to afford.

In addition to Kun and Costa, Baines, Sanchez & one of the CHE mids look a must right now.

Something like Chadli, Hazard & Pelle -> Downing, Oscar & Sturridge over the next couple of weeks another option I think....

I'm looking at options that include Sturridge, but something will have to give way in midfield. Sterling becomes a viable option again too.
It's great having so many choices this year.

      no thanks

tends not to score more than one goal at a time. Liverpool are suffering a massive crisis confidence, no Suarez for assists and he's too expensive

He scored two braces last season and a brace and a hattrick the season before that so there is credence to his lack of explosive returns. Sterling's performance with him is key. If it looks like Sturridge hogs the goals and assists are spread among Sterling, Hernderson, Lallana and Gerrard then Sturridge is a must. If not and Sterling is chief provider and scoring then obviously our job is easier and we can all just get Sterling back.

              Sterling or Sturridge? Sterling is.

Sturridge less so - he's one of the most selfish strikers around. He got 8 assists last season on the back of the Suarez effect but has managed no more than five in any other season.

Nonsense. 🙂 He provided a shedload of chances last Season, and was starting to do the same this. It is not always his fault if others do not score. 🙂

I think you need to have a closer look at the stats. 😉

Sturridge created just 29 chances last season. 16 more strikers created more. So last season he was actually one of the worst.

To put his lack of creation into perspective Giroud created 37 chances. Rooney created 56.

It would be wrong to tell people that he is an excellent provider when he clearly isn't.

He is however a great goal scorer.

Crosses is another good indicator of assist potential. Among forwards he is 25th...once again one of the worst. Just 21 crosses last season - that's woeful for an attacker.

Mmm. Well, It is partly about the quality of those chances - and whether they will be taken.

Take Giroud - many of his "chances" were fairly innocuous knock downs.

Rooney is clearly still a different class, at Premiership level.

My point is, that it IS nonsense to deride him as a selfish striker.

                      Last three Seasons:

11/12 Chelski - 3 A (Same as Suarez, incidentally; with buggerall minutes)
                      12/13 'Pool - 3 A (in transition)

13/14 'Pool - 7 A (Equal 5th amongst strikers, with not all that many minutes)

Indeed all in interpretation. I'd interpret last season as a perfect storm for Sturridge that may never be repeated - no Europe and playing up front with Suarez - who like Ronaldo and Bale is a stat busting, world class player.

I'd like to see what his stats and assists are this season as prior to last season they were poor, albeit with other issues at play like moving club and playing out of position.

Well, he has some reason behind it, in truth he doesn´t have the need to be creative all the time when he has the chance to pass the ball or go for a through pass, this could be a good thing imo but the Arsenal game will be the perfect platform to see how Gaal´s words will affect ADM´s input.

I don't think I will get Sturridge, other options are better and with his injury record and Pools Suarez hangover it just doesn't look worth bothering with him.

He's last years RVP, people will get him based on what he did the previous season

      Guzan, 4.0
      Baines, Wisdom, Yun, Saylor, Moore
Sanchez, Oscar, Siggy, Walters (yuck), Boyd

Not for me, unless Kun or Costa get injured even so i prefer Rooney ahead of him. Sterling maybe.
Last season passing the ball to Suarez in the final third was like a chance created now a pass to Mario in the six yard box should count as an unsuccsesful pass.

If I had the spare cash, I would. But my issue with Sturridge is that he has a price which needs minimum 200 points per season to make it worthwhile, and a history of never getting there.

No, keeping Costa and Kun combined with a cheapie like Berahino, Sakho or even Ayoze. Then there is Etoo, Austin and a few more.
Also on midfield their is a LOT of options, both in the premium and in the mid range.
Sturridge also seems to be getting injured again and again this year.
Then there is the case of Pool playing less then expected in quality, of course the hope is on Sturridge to get them on track but i'm skeptic.

The return of Sturridge makes me more interested in Sterling. I think his output has been diminished by a misfiring Balotelli. Also, in the first few games of the season I noticed that Sturridge was prone to dropping deeper and taking up wider posistions whereas Sterling remained very central. Given the quality options in midfield I don't think a front line of Sturridge, Costa and Aguero is worthwhile. When Sturridge is back starting i'll be looking at moving in Sterling who is now priced at £8.5m...

Liverpool have issue running far deeper than Danny boy's absence, primarily the loss of Gnasher. Even when present in the team for 3 full matches he only scored 1 goal and nabbed not a single an assist. Some will point to one of those matches being against City which is fair but we know City concede goals. Furthermore, getting nothing in a 3-0 win over Spurs would be a major let down if I had owned him.

BR is under pressure in a big way, Pool in general are under a lot of pressure, they've sold three of their most passionate players (Agger, Reina and Suarez) and unfortunately haven't brought in anyone to replace them, in terms of talent or in terms of leadership. Much like being careful about United or City assets, I wouldn't be jumping into owning a player from a team that is in upheaval.

As for how feasible it is, for myself it could be a straight swap of Pelle -> Sturridge but I would have to lose one of Fabs, ADM or Sanchez to bring in Costa for Sakho. That's a pretty hefty price to pay.

And don't forget about the decline of their captain. Barely meriting his place in the team now but Brendan is scared to drop him. Also, Henderson is nowhere near as good this year (maybe because of the team as a whole struggling) and Balotelli not fitting into the Liverpool way of playing yet Rodgers defends him all the time, saying that he is "working hard"

I'd be inclined to agree with this.

MJ is certainly right about Stevie G, woeful but then again it is much a case of Arteta at Arsenal, both are attacking mids, not holding mids.

It comes down to Rodgers in the end.

If I were to invest funds in a third expensive striker and get Sturridge, it would be hard to correct if he got injured again (which will definitely happen) as I'd need to make multiple transfers to shift funds back into midfield.

I think I'll stick to 2 expensive strikers, 2 expensive mids and 1 expensive defender and have the rest freestyle.

      Sanchez Sterling/Wally/ADM/Hazard/Cesc

I had both Suarez and Sturridge for a large part of last season. Liverpool were just incredible going forward, scoring 3 or 4 goals every game, it made sense to double up on them.

Now with them not doing so great I will have to wait and see on Sturridge, never say never but I can't see him doing as well as last year and he is expensive. Much rather have Costa and Aguero.

I hate the term "one man team" but the difference between Liverpool with and without Suarez is like night and day

The way Liverpool have been playing since August, and without a Suarez as his partner up front, I don't know how often Sturridge will even get the ball in a scoring position. Going to wait and see.

6.3m available for a CHE defender this week.

    Terry or Azpil ?

Terry - bigger goal threat (albeit not great this year) and perhaps a little more nailed on

Azpil - slightly cheaper and a baseline BP darling

Interesting article about why hipsters all look the same:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/storyline/wp/2014/11/11/the-mathematician-who-proved-why-hipsters-all-look-alike/

It's interesting from a fantasy football point of view, cos it explains how the brain makes mistakes in trying to get ahead of the crowd, and ends up being part of the crowd.

Well i would illustrate people wilth a crowd of birds flying together, suddenly one(the leader) makes a turn and baam everyone follows. It is a lot like people in this game chasing points(one week late) and/or following the moves a few of the peeps here do.
      It's nothing new.

Well yeah. Without realising it, he's demonstrated mathematically that our brains are programmed to buy last week's big player. We misjudge the real position and chase last week's points.

I am very much an FPL player that is happy to be late onto bandwagons rather than being an early adopter / trend setter. I would rather wait and be sure that a player is a real deal before taking the plunge, even though this often leads to me being "late to the party". But then, for every bandwagon that is successful, there are many more that aren't.

Yeah this is the way to go in most cases, but the thrill to take a chance and then the rush when the player sky rockets up in the stars with a brace or something like that and you know the herd is behind

    Dummett Baines Clyne

    Agüero Costa Sturridge

Had anyone watched Stoke lately? May I ask how Moses was?

Stoke and him has not bad attacking stats and he could be an enabler for Welbeck > Costa.

      Sterling or nobody for me.

Costa, Aguero and Sanchez over Sturridge, so I don't quite know where he fits in, unless I decided to go with Sanchez as my only costly mid and padded the rest out with budget players (e.g. Siggy, Chadli, Downing and Boyd)

guess at this stage we do not have to make such sacrifice yet. even if sturridge explode u are not likely to hurt too much since not alot have him yet.

sterling is still an interesting option and i think getting him back at the right moment is important

Difficult to make that comparison because Rooney is much more than a goalscorer. Rooney is an all round better footballer, Costa obviously a better goalscorer. If I was United I'd rather have Rooney, if I was Chelsea I'd rather have Costa because it depends on the rest of your team.
