After reviewing the Goalkeepers and Defenders, the third instalment in our series of Members articles looking at Fantasy consistency sees midfielders come under the microscope.

Aiming to highlight those players who week-in, week-out offer solid returns, we’ve looked at the top ten midfielders for points per game in 2010/11 and analysed their scores in terms of reliability. While the likes of Rafael Van der Vaart impresses in his debut season, there’s plenty room for Florent Malouda -despite his overall haul of 186- to improve his consistency for Chelsea this upcoming season.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Tiote will be one of the 1st names on Newcastle's team sheet (Im a Geordie) and will be one of our best players this season, so will perhaps pick up a couple bonus points here and there, but as a defensive midfielder (he picked up more yellow cards than any other player in the Premier League last season I believe) I don't think his performances can outweigh the amount he will lose through disciplinary, plus he will miss games through bans. Class player, just not suited to scoring high totals in fantasy football. What about Nathan Dyer from Swansea? Not going to make an impact against Man City, but was outstanding last season in the Championship and might just be able to step up and cause the lesser Premier League sides a few problems, he has the potential to heavily outscore Tiote with the opportunity of more assists and goals.. he's on my bench anyway

after gameweek 1 players prices increase and decrease based on how many players transfered them in/out. you can see it in the rules section, so ur team value dsnt remain 100, it can go up or down

I apologise for the following “rant” but I feel it needs to be said.

Having followed FFS for a good few years (mostly quietly) , and played FPL since it started, I have not found a better website for insight, analysis and coment on the game. It is number one.
However, these “analysing Consistency” articles are not up the usual high standards, and appear to be a case of quantity over quality.
This contrived “percentage of games ppg beaten” is a poor statistic for contributing to any game that involves transfers.
The key to a good FPL score is having the right players at the right time, finding the purple patches, playing the fixtures.
It is this weekly interaction ,and the banter that accompanies it that keeps us playing.
Not leaving a team untouched for the season.
Last season’s high scorers took advantage of Malouda’s start, Walcott’s mid season and Kuyt’s finish.
Player’s good fixtures, added starting certainty due to teammates injury/suspension, extra set piece action, Double Gameweeks, OOP, all contribute to “score peaks” which make perfect captain options.
But, also increase the PPG and therfore increase the number of average games which fall below that level. Therefore opposing the whole basis of this contrived set of articles.

This season, I will pick Malouda at the start, bring in VP at gw4 [ if fit ], consider Kuyt while StevieG is injured, and generally make transfers to have captain choices. I will have to get rid aswell to bring in new players. Young will not be a 38wk keeper for me.

Other people may disagree, but I feel this needed to be said.
But I will keep following FFS all season because the majority of their articles would score more highly than this.
    Usually Very Consistent.

Not a member so haven't been reading them, but you're right to an extent. The highest scorers do get on the right players at the right time, but that takes a large slice of luck as well as judgment. Whilst you can't simply rely on 'consistency' you do need a certain number of players who score relatively consistently.. to rotate your whole squad based on the (valid) factors that you have outlined would simply eat up too many transfers. You need to strike the right balance I think.

Hi Sport Billy. Hands up - we tried something new with these.

You make some great points and it's good feedback but I still personally feel that analysing the consistency of scoring is a worthwhile pursuit. It's a given that our squads will shift throughout the season and that players will come and go with form but, for me, there is some merit in knowing which players produce returns on a consistent basis.

We wanted to produce a set of articles which approach player scoring from a new angle - like i say, I obviously think there is some merit that would generate interest and talking points.

Thanks Mark - I agree... it's useful to know who is mr.consistent, so we can supplement these with the purple patch players; I for one wish last season I made less transfers, but that's because I didn't know who is the more steady, reliable point scorers. Cheers!

        Thanks for the reply.
There are many times this site has brought new ways of looking at FPL scoring to light.
I just think that this consistency factor is being stretched a little too far by applying it to high value midfielders. It is much more appropriate for picking your 4th and 5th choice attackers/mids, and particularly your defenders. These are the players that need to be counted on for consistant returns, without wasting transfers, allowing variety and change at the top end for captain choices through form and fixtures.
It has raised talking points though, and i hope future articles do too. Thanks,
        SB

Anyone thinking of Newc/Sund keepers? Cost the same as Given/Ruddy (everyone's favourite combo) and you'll actually play both. The first 4 fixtures aren't ideal, but they get better.

Up to GW11, Norwich have ok homes when Villa have bad fixtures, but GW12 is nasty for the Villa/Norwich combo, while Sunderland start a run of 3 nice homes in 4. Sunderland/Newc have a tough opening four fixture run, so if I WC between GW4 and GW12, I might make the change.

How unwise is it to be lacking so many star players in defence? My current team looks like this:

    Al-Habsi (Moreira)
De Laet, Hughes, Johnson (Alcaraz, Gabbidon)
    Nani, Silva, Malouda(c), N'Zogbia (Barton)
    Carroll(v), Campbell, Bent

I know there's a lot of money spent up front. My other team iteration was this:

    Cech (Moreira)
Lescott, Johnson, Jones (Hughes, De Laet)
    N'Zogbia, Malouda(c), O'Hara, Sinclair (Barton)
    Carroll(v), Zamora, Bent

Which is better, first or second. Cheers (first time posting here)!

This isn't a RMT as such, I'm happy with most of it (for now haha) but need advice on a couple of positions. Will post my team as well though:

    Given (ruddy)

    Kompany, Lescott, Hughes, (bramble, simpson)

    Silva, Nani, N'Zog, Moses (Dyer)

    Rooney, Drogba, Campbell.

I have 0.5 to spare. So I could swap drogba for Bent or Carroll, and then upgrade Moses to O'Hara? This is my dilemma at the moment.

I like 2 simply because you're not doubling on a defence. That said, I'm not sold on Sessegnon. 1 if you're intent on doubling up, for me.

THe double up is only for gweek 1, I doubt man City will concede against the swans at home. After that, i'm getting either Bosignwa, Luiz or ALex in, just wanna see who AVB favours. Anyone else?

I agree with you views regarding City, and think you should go for 3, but maybe with Suarez in stead of Carroll(if Suarez is fit of course).

    "1055: BBC Monitoring

Libyan foreign ministry spokesman Khalid Ka'im has called on world governments to take action over the unrest in the UK. David Cameron has lost legitimacy and "must go", Libya's official news agency Jana reports. Libya "demands that the international community not stand with arms folded in the face of this gross aggression against the rights of the British people, who are demanding its right to rule its country", the report said."

    LMFAO, get a clue.

Is this defence a bit too much?

    Kompany, Enrique, Jagielka, Warnock, Orr
    6.0 5.0 5.5 5.0 4.0

With all the injuries and doubts over GW1, I'm quite happy with a front 3 of Carroll, Holt & Rodellega.

Will I regret selecting such an expensive defence?

Any advise would really help. Cheers lads.
