With seven clean sheets and 23 goals, Southampton have enjoyed a tremendous first 11 Gameweeks to the season. They sit second in the Premier League with players such as Graziano Pelle in attack and Ryan Bertrand in defence proving to be cast-iron Fantasy assets.

However, while the Saints have strong momentum, over the coming weeks they face a daunting spell leading up to Christmas and beyond.

Gameweek 12’s trip to Villa provides easy passage into a run that introduces back-to-back matches with Arsenal, Man City and Man United. Indeed, Ronald Koeman’s side will then face Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal again in the three home fixtures that follow. In short, it’s an evil spell that could well reduce Fantasy output from back to front.

With this in mind, and with Pelle already shedding owners having gone three outings without a goal, our first of two “Burning Questions” this week asks whether Southampton players should be retained or ditched?

Jonty says…
Keeping on top of big shifts in the Premier League fixture list is crucial for me as a Fantasy manager. During Southampton’s kind and very long run of games, which ends in Gameweek 12, I stocked up on their assets. In came Ryan Bertrand and Graziano Pelle in Gameweek 6 and Dusan Tadic a week later.

It was a move that has gone on to define my season with this trio bringing in a total of 45 points in Gameweek 8, when I climbed more than 150,000 places into the top 10,000. Three Gameweeks on I’m still in this elite bunch, in fact now into the too 5,000 thanks in part to Pelle’s consistent returns and Bertrand’s clean sheets. I’m not sure in seven years of playing Fantasy football one team has defined my season in such a way.

But time moves on. From Gameweek 13 they face a run that includes City, United, Everton and Chelsea at home and Arsenal away. It’s one of the worst runs of opponents I’ve ever seen. Just as I constructed a team to take advantage of their kind spell, I will now look to build a lineup that takes advantage of others who have far better fixtures. From Gameweek 13 I will either ditch all three of my Southampton assets with hits or use my wildcard.

Tadic will always have a special place in my heart with his 23-point haul in Gameweek 8, but he has achieved little since with his strong underlying stats rarely translating into Fantasy points. For me, Nacir Chadli, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Stewart Downing all offer better points potential at a cheaper price.

Pelle has been reliable against weaker sides. But I don’t think he’ll maintain that against stronger opponents. Besides, for around a million less I can get other strikers like Charlie Austin or Diafra Sakho with better fixtures and similar returns.

Bertrand has to go as well. As Heels Over Head points out in his excellent recent analysis of clean sheet data, Southampton are unlikely to maintain their excellent shut-out rate. For a million more I can tap into Chelsea’s defence. For a million less I can invest in a Burnley or Newcastle defender and use Bertrand’s cash to invest in my Alexis Sanchez fund. Fantasy Football can be a ruthless business but, in order to stay at and improve on the rank Southampton have helped me achieve, I am ready to dump their players without hesitation.

Greenwindmill says…
My view on this is probably warped by what was undoubtedly the best (luckiest) transfer I made last season: After 6 clean sheets, a goal, numerous bonus points and several price rises in the first 11 Gameweeks, it wasn’t an easy decision to dump Jose Fonte. However, Southampton’s fixtures took a turn for the worse so I took the plunge and swapped him for Per Mertesacker ahead of Southampton’s Gameweek 12 trip to the Emirates. Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners with Fonte dragging down Mertesacker for a late penalty, picking up a yellow card in the process. The incident took Fonte’s score down to zero, whilst earning Mertesacker an assist and two bonus for a score of 11. In total Mertesacker picked up 55 points in the nine weeks after I bought him. Fonte got a mere 10 in the same period.

The cynical amongst you will realise this is essentially just an excuse to brag about the one occasion last season where I made a good move. The more generous spirited elements of the community may interpret this as a valuable lesson in trusting fixtures over form (at least where defenders are concerned). I’d like to think it serves both purposes – personally I’ll be switching Nathaniel Clyne to a Swansea/West Ham defender in the hope of similar fortune to last season. I’ll also be losing Sadio Mane and Pelle for players with a little more blue on their season ticker. This may come back to haunt me but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping this is my Mertesacker moment for this year.

7 Shades of Smoke says…
Southampton are on fire right now. They’ve produced a quality goal scoring striker for around eight million, a decent midfielder for any price bracket, and go into the Gameweek 12 trip to Villa with an incredible seven clean sheets in their last ten after that 2-1 defeat at Anfield in the opening weekend of the season.

Those who’d booked tickets for Saints’ options early were handsomely rewarded, riding the strength of their fixtures all the way to Villa Park. A journey that’s been so good to so many Fantasy managers, they’d easily be forgiven for missing their stop.

Before the clouds draw in, let’s not forget that Saints are looking a quality side. They’ll score goals in tough games and the likes of Pelle and Tadic – who lie sixth and third respectively in the ICT index – will continue to be involved, though it seems reasonable to expect their opportunities to whither through the winter.
With plenty of other options coming into great form, fixtures, or better still; both, Fantasy managers may chose to give these options a stay of execution while the assess the likes of Wilfried Bony and Christian Benteke as mid-long term replacements.

In defence lies a critical decision, however. If we extrapolate Saints’ clean sheet form (70%) through to the season’s end, they’d pick up another 19 from the remaining 27 games.

To put that into perspective, the tightest defences of the past three seasons produced less for the whole campaign on average – Chelsea and Manchester City’s 18 in 2013/14 and 2012/13 respectively, and Manchester United’s 20 in 2011/12. Given that Southampton have bagged seven already, that additional 19 clean sheets projection now looks massively inflated, and a quick glance at the glorious vista through the rear window of the Saints bandwagon gives an inclination as to why (Saints’ last ten: WBA, whm, NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO, hul, LEI). In contrast, the forecast for Saints’ next nine isn’t quite so bright (MCI, ars, MUN, bur, EVE, cpl, CHE, ARS, mun). With Chelsea offering deluxe packages to the promised land of clean sheet consistency, and Swansea and Aston Villa advertising fair weather trips for any budget, it seems that Villa Park could make an apt interchange for Fantasy managers planning defensive budgets for the journey ahead.

Spencer says…
I currently have three Southampton players; Bertrand, Clyne, and Pelle. I’ve had Clyne from the beginning, and when Pelle since Gameweek 5, and Bertrand in Gameweek 6. Pelle has been consistent for me, but with fixtures stiffening and cheaper options with more favourable fixtures becoming available (Diafra Sakho, Saido Berahino, maybe even Danny Ings), I think it’s time to ditch the big Italian.

The defence is not such an easy decision, however. Rightly or wrongly, I’ve experimented with a number of double-ups in defence this season (West Brom, Newcastle and Southampton), with the Saints pairing being the most successful by far.

My double Southampton defence feels like a Toyota Prius; reliable but just a bit dull. My current thinking is that I’m going to break up this pairing and go for something cheaper like a Peugeot 207, aware that every now and then it will break down, but knowing that with the money saved, I can get also get a slightly more exciting Volkswagen Golf. With a little bit of shopping around, I might even stumble on a GTI!

Mark says…
I’ve already nailed my colours to the mast here – shedding Bertrand somewhat prematurely in Gameweek 10 in order to fund an urgent move for Alexis Sanchez. Looking ahead, I knew I could turn to Calum Chambers in my 3-4-3 and that Bertand’s forthcoming fixures threatened to produce a run of 2-pointers.

I won’t be considering Southampton’s rearguard again until they’ve navigated through Gameweeks 13-15. If they show resilience through that spell, I may plan to invest again and I suspect I’ll still be able to pick up Toby Alderweireld for 5.0 should that be the case.

In attacking areas, my soft spot for Tadic could be my undoing. He’s one of those players you want to keep for the silky deft touches on Match of the Day and the huge Opta numbers he produces week on week. However, the big return of Gameweek 8 is a fading memory after three consecutive blanks, making the trip to Villa’s a big one for myself and other Tadic converts.

I still think he can offer value – there’s a cast of mid-price assets on show this season and, while Tadic is pricey by comparison, I’ve faith that, with set-piece duties and penalties, the Serb schemer can deliver points to warrant his price tag – even against stiff opposition.

Another blank at Villa might just change my mind. Fantasy football is fickle like that.

Applebonkers says…
First of all I really wish Ronald Koeman was my dad. He just seems so nice, so happy, so wise. However, can we trust someone who seems so perfect? Of course not, he’s definitely hiding something, that’s just how it works. The upcoming run of fixtures definitely has the potential to expose his bizarrely placed third nipple and his chronic flatulence problem.

I’m sure I’m not saying anything particularly interesting or enlightening here but those fixtures are filthy. They have showed enough signs that they will compete in these big games but I reckon this will be more in an attacking sense than defensively. This could still mean there is something in Clyne and Bertrand but are this pair really in the Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman echelons of play anyway in case of attacking points? I think they’re still in the clean sheets are bread and butter camp.

I’d definitely let go of their centre backs but Frazer Forster is trickier due to save points and the “limpet-ablity” of goalkeepers, so I’m 50/50 there. That leaves the attacking players. Can they be relied on to keep it going like former stalwarts Le Tissier, Beattie and Dia? I don’t think any of them showed enough against Liverpool, West Ham, Swansea or Tottenham. Bank the price rises and hope for more of the same, especially from “statzilla” Tadic.

Milner -> Downing ? (im doing the transfer but idk if this gw or next)

Pros: Downing IS gonna start and play 90 minutes. Downings price will PROBABLY rise tonight. Milner will at best play 60 minutes with silva returning. Milner haven't really done anething yet.

Cons: Downing facing everton away (downing plays in west ham). Milner facing swansea HOME (milner plays in city). Not tranferring will give me that nice 2 free transfers next week (heaviest con imo). Milner is a differential.

And a wise man once told me that many fall in fpl becouse of unnecessary risks...guess thats a pro

Im leaning towards doing it this week

Very good reasons both ways. I really like having the 2 FTs so you can always use one every week. I already have Downing and do not expect much vs Everton. Maybe you could keep Milner one more week.

Downing has great away stats, and Everton will be missing Barry, Stones, Alcaraz, and maybe McCarthy and Baines too, so don't let the fixture put you off.

Everton also conceded 3 at home against Palace, and 6 against Chelsea when Distin played, he's been in shocking form this season, finally showing all of his 37 years on the pitch.

I love Milner as a pick, but without the minutes its hard to depend on him unfortunately.

Courtois then. City will get a few CSs with those fixtures though. Personally I don't rate spending much on keepers, In a few weeks I'm thinking of going pantilimon and that's it, as he's the cheapest playing keeper.

I would probably never go for a pricey keeper, especially from City/Chelsea when theres so much more potential if you go for a defender from either of those clubs. I also just try to find a cheap-ish keeper from a club that has had tendencies for clean sheets.

Good point. I think every striker does it, but the media seems to only label the foreign and especially South American and Southern Europeans as divers, when Sturridge, Welbeck, Rooney, Young, etc, have dived just as much as any foreign players do.

I think a whole lot of players in the BPL take the occasional dive, and while i dont condone of that behavior, its not something i personally take all that seriously. But the consistent divers, those that always try to influence the referees decisions, and fly under the radar on top of that, those are the ones that really bite my balls. And you have to consider that the South American/Italian/etc players have this attitude from earlier and have to try and get rid of it, the English players really dont have the luxury of that excuse. They grew up in a football culture that expressed hate on those that dove, and they still chose to be "cheaters".

Personally I think diving is the lowest form of cheating and should be punished with suspension, but I do appreciate how difficult it can be to determine what is a dive and what isn't.

I think the most obvious of dives should get punished with a retrospective suspension.. like this one for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCX9Q8e76nA .. or the play-acting like Rivaldo in 2002.

His England captaincy you can blame Hodgson for, and who really cares about him anyway. Its pretty hilarious that hes United captain though, after him seeking a move away to City, and reports of him asking for guarantees to become club captain in his contract. Not really sure if this is true or not, i do know that anybody that has to claim to be named leader, are not true leaders.

Well, HBO for one makes some pretty darn good tv shows. American tv in general is pretty good, for me. Ofcourse not talking reality and that stuff, nobody likes that anyway. BBC is pretty good too. Havent really seen enough english movies to make that call, but as far as Hollywood goes, i can agree that theres a lof of mixed quality, some are great, most are pretty useless blockbuster pics.

I remember a few years ago going to the cinema with my son to watch some Hollywood super heroes film (can't remember which one) but then afterwards we watched Timothy Spall in "Pierrepoint", a really good contrast right there...It was the first time my son had chatted and compared two entirely different types of films...Next year he begins "film studies" at A level...

Having no actual education in the field, i think its pretty safe to assume that Hollywood is more of a "give the people what they want" and british/other film industries are much more aesthetically correct and just better productions in general. I for one find the dialogue to be much more thought out and meaningful in the few BBC series ive seen, compared to most of the american ones ive seen. Ofcourse some of the american ones are great, too, but mostly its not at the same level.

Looks like they're going to make up some romantic bullsh** up to make his life look more interesting than it really was. I like Hawking's story but they won't focus on the science, rather they will focus on the "drama"

Is there any reason why there's so many movies about space coming out? Why the sudden interest in Hollywood?

          Gravity
          Edge of Tomorrow

          Interstellar
          Avatar

They always do that. Just jumping on trends. Vampires, WW2, Outer Space, Pirates... etc etc .. seems to be a 20 year repeatable cycle. A bit like men's suits.

Greater interest in space in general. More recent discoveries, plans to attempt to land humans on Mars, plans to privatise space flight/journeys etc. So there are things that are keeping space in the news and in the public mind, you can bet Hollywood will capitalise on that.

Yeah, this as well. Since not a lot of space are known to man and we dont really understand a whole lot of whats going on out there, Hollywood are pretty free to create plots and themes that dont necessarily are actually true and possible, just cus most people dont have the knowledge to know whether or not its actually possible.

There is a certain element of that.

For example, that film Lucie about that girl who unlocks the full "potential" of her brain etc. All of that film was utter bollocks and lies.

Like that other one, with the guy from the Hangover series. Brandon Cooper, is that him? Like he takes a pill and becomes invincible as he can now fully unleash 100% of his brain. What a load of piss. They just prey on the unknown and people tend to buy it because Hollywood is really flashy and the actors are young and beautiful people.

Fully agree. Hollywood (and media in general) control alot of what we perceive to be true, and can set the agenda to a large degree. Perhaps there's something more to this than them just "jumping on the gravy train while its still popular" though?

    Good evening 🙂

I thought I would do a match analysis for the Scotland - Ireland game for you all. I know when people post these I find them very interesting from an FPL perspective.

I know actually BEING at the match might provide a more in-depth insight into things but I also find other supporters standing up in front of you at an inopportune moment quite annoying. Also other supporters rustling their crisp packets, walking across the row to go for a piss and making you stand up, or simply pissing on your leg from behind can be quite distracting too.

For these reasons I chose not to pay Ryanair an exorbitant amount to get to Glasgow and my sofa is awesome anyway.

    Here are my findings ;

Strachan and McCall have somehow managed to hold onto their ginger 80s hair-do's.

Roy Keane has now become a pantomime villain. When he was giving the Ref that stare, I couldn't stop myself shouting " Look out behind you! "

I have Wilson in my team but some bloke from Derby looked 10 times better than him... Return of the Huth.

That Robertson guy looked amazing. Deffo worth getting when Hull have good fixtures.

    That's about it really 🙁

WELL DONE SCOTLAND.. completely deserved win.

Right just back home from Wembley, what can I advise on from a FF perspective ?

Kieran Gibbs was for me MOM, looks great going forward, surely could provide assists to Welbeck.

On the subject of Welbeck, was going to sell before tonight, will keep now, confidence is good.

Jags will add to his goals tally, he is a danger from set plays.

Raheem was out wide but also full of confidence, am sure returns are just around the corner.

Yes, of course I was. There was mass hooliganism going on in the stadium and then it spilled out onto the streets a couple of hours after the game in the city centre when everyone had had a few more drinks.

It was the mid 90s and it had potentially huge implications on the ongoing peace process. I don't know what age you are but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and say because you are young that LMFAO is a generic response to something you know nothing about.

I was at the NI game last night. Was beside an Entlish guy who was across for a Stag and acquired a ticket. He couldn't believe the atmosphere NI fans created. He goes to England games at Wembley and says the atmosphere is non existent. Pity that is what it is like these days... 🙁

Would you double up on Chelsea defence for a 1 week punt. They seem a good punt v WBA at home & one of the better fixtures for a cs. Of course this would involve selling Baines as even if he does play v WHU he may play a more conservatively & not bomb forward as much as he does. I can then just bring him back in for Ivanovic later.

    My current defence:
    Baines, Ivanovic, Clyne (Moore, Hutton)

I have 0.0itb & have already taken a -4 hit so it would be for a -8 which doesn't worry me.
    I could either:
    (a) sell Moore & buy Dummet as insurance in case Baines doesn't play or
    (b) sell Baines & buy Azpi & look to get Baines back later by selling Ivanovic.

I prefer (b) because if I do (a) & Baines does play then the hit to get Dummett would be redundant.
Even if Baines does play as I mentioned above he could restrict his attacking output.

Thoughts appreciated & thanks in advance. Also sorry for the longish post so if you read the whole narrative then thanks.

i wouldn't. Between the -4 hit and having to get Baines back when healthy seems too high of a price. If Baines price has gone up since you first bought him, you also won't have the cash to get him back assuming that you'd want to.

He's only 0.2 more expensive than Ivanovic. Baines purchase price is 7.3 & my selling value for Ivan is 7.1. I know what you're saying though. Cheers CD.

Austin, Welbeck, Sakho, Valencia. Austin gets the edge as i think the next set of fixtures favor him getting more points than Welbz, but just my opinion

As a player, for sure. Ive seen WHU 3-4 games this season in full, and Valencia has a lot to offer, i find it hilarious that hes scored as much. Think hes been anonomous in all the games ive seen and most of what hes produced has been flukey.

Yeah, I have to admit I only watched him vs Hull, vs Liverpool, and one other game I can't remember, and those were probably his best games as I didn't hear much about him otherwise.

And against Liverpool his goal was a lucky cross that he scuffed and it went in. Im not at all convinced about his potential, although his stats are pretty decent.

Tbf hes a pretty execptional talent. Hes only recently turned 19, and hes been playing BPL football/international football for Liverpool/England for two years now. But people would be well adviced to remember that hes still a talent, has a lot of work and development to go through.

I think people forget that this time last year he wasn't even playing regularly, and he's only 19. Most players don't even BEGIN to enter their prime until they're 23-25 where Hazard is at right now for example.

Compare what he's done since last November to what Januzaj has done. 12 months ago Januzaj was hailed as "the next Ronaldo" around Europe, but he's done nothing compared to Sterling.

As a Liverpool fan, I got to say, he's a BIG talent for his age. I wish the media stopped paying attention to him, however. The whole "I'm tired" thing was blown out of proportion.

I can remember back to when Wilshere first came up and Arsenal faced Barca in the Champions League while Guardiola was coach there. When asked about the fantastic talent that was Wilshere, he replied: Hes a great talent, we have a couple like him in our B-team. While he was surely having a little piss, hes probably got a decent point as well.

I enjoyed Godzilla a lot. It's probably 10x better in theaters though.

I thought Godzilla was awful. Fully of plot holes and overdone CGI. The only part I enjoyed was the part with Bryan Cranston

re. diving, i'm perfectly fine with it. I reckon it's a bit of an artform. I'm also a fan of the hand of god/frog. If you can pull off the perfect illusion under the gaze of of the ref and his assistants well played i say. If they position themselves right and catch you out and card you well played to them.
It's the acting like they've been shot that i can't stand.

Thats without a doubt the dumbest thing ive ever seen anyone write. Diving has nothing to do with football and it has no place in it. Its like saying that smacking your wife around is an artform and is cool and all just because they do it some places in the world. If you want to act, study acting. Dont play football.
