With seven clean sheets and 23 goals, Southampton have enjoyed a tremendous first 11 Gameweeks to the season. They sit second in the Premier League with players such as Graziano Pelle in attack and Ryan Bertrand in defence proving to be cast-iron Fantasy assets.

However, while the Saints have strong momentum, over the coming weeks they face a daunting spell leading up to Christmas and beyond.

Gameweek 12’s trip to Villa provides easy passage into a run that introduces back-to-back matches with Arsenal, Man City and Man United. Indeed, Ronald Koeman’s side will then face Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal again in the three home fixtures that follow. In short, it’s an evil spell that could well reduce Fantasy output from back to front.

With this in mind, and with Pelle already shedding owners having gone three outings without a goal, our first of two “Burning Questions” this week asks whether Southampton players should be retained or ditched?

Jonty says…
Keeping on top of big shifts in the Premier League fixture list is crucial for me as a Fantasy manager. During Southampton’s kind and very long run of games, which ends in Gameweek 12, I stocked up on their assets. In came Ryan Bertrand and Graziano Pelle in Gameweek 6 and Dusan Tadic a week later.

It was a move that has gone on to define my season with this trio bringing in a total of 45 points in Gameweek 8, when I climbed more than 150,000 places into the top 10,000. Three Gameweeks on I’m still in this elite bunch, in fact now into the too 5,000 thanks in part to Pelle’s consistent returns and Bertrand’s clean sheets. I’m not sure in seven years of playing Fantasy football one team has defined my season in such a way.

But time moves on. From Gameweek 13 they face a run that includes City, United, Everton and Chelsea at home and Arsenal away. It’s one of the worst runs of opponents I’ve ever seen. Just as I constructed a team to take advantage of their kind spell, I will now look to build a lineup that takes advantage of others who have far better fixtures. From Gameweek 13 I will either ditch all three of my Southampton assets with hits or use my wildcard.

Tadic will always have a special place in my heart with his 23-point haul in Gameweek 8, but he has achieved little since with his strong underlying stats rarely translating into Fantasy points. For me, Nacir Chadli, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Stewart Downing all offer better points potential at a cheaper price.

Pelle has been reliable against weaker sides. But I don’t think he’ll maintain that against stronger opponents. Besides, for around a million less I can get other strikers like Charlie Austin or Diafra Sakho with better fixtures and similar returns.

Bertrand has to go as well. As Heels Over Head points out in his excellent recent analysis of clean sheet data, Southampton are unlikely to maintain their excellent shut-out rate. For a million more I can tap into Chelsea’s defence. For a million less I can invest in a Burnley or Newcastle defender and use Bertrand’s cash to invest in my Alexis Sanchez fund. Fantasy Football can be a ruthless business but, in order to stay at and improve on the rank Southampton have helped me achieve, I am ready to dump their players without hesitation.

Greenwindmill says…
My view on this is probably warped by what was undoubtedly the best (luckiest) transfer I made last season: After 6 clean sheets, a goal, numerous bonus points and several price rises in the first 11 Gameweeks, it wasn’t an easy decision to dump Jose Fonte. However, Southampton’s fixtures took a turn for the worse so I took the plunge and swapped him for Per Mertesacker ahead of Southampton’s Gameweek 12 trip to the Emirates. Arsenal ran out 2-0 winners with Fonte dragging down Mertesacker for a late penalty, picking up a yellow card in the process. The incident took Fonte’s score down to zero, whilst earning Mertesacker an assist and two bonus for a score of 11. In total Mertesacker picked up 55 points in the nine weeks after I bought him. Fonte got a mere 10 in the same period.

The cynical amongst you will realise this is essentially just an excuse to brag about the one occasion last season where I made a good move. The more generous spirited elements of the community may interpret this as a valuable lesson in trusting fixtures over form (at least where defenders are concerned). I’d like to think it serves both purposes – personally I’ll be switching Nathaniel Clyne to a Swansea/West Ham defender in the hope of similar fortune to last season. I’ll also be losing Sadio Mane and Pelle for players with a little more blue on their season ticker. This may come back to haunt me but I’m crossing my fingers and hoping this is my Mertesacker moment for this year.

7 Shades of Smoke says…
Southampton are on fire right now. They’ve produced a quality goal scoring striker for around eight million, a decent midfielder for any price bracket, and go into the Gameweek 12 trip to Villa with an incredible seven clean sheets in their last ten after that 2-1 defeat at Anfield in the opening weekend of the season.

Those who’d booked tickets for Saints’ options early were handsomely rewarded, riding the strength of their fixtures all the way to Villa Park. A journey that’s been so good to so many Fantasy managers, they’d easily be forgiven for missing their stop.

Before the clouds draw in, let’s not forget that Saints are looking a quality side. They’ll score goals in tough games and the likes of Pelle and Tadic – who lie sixth and third respectively in the ICT index – will continue to be involved, though it seems reasonable to expect their opportunities to whither through the winter.
With plenty of other options coming into great form, fixtures, or better still; both, Fantasy managers may chose to give these options a stay of execution while the assess the likes of Wilfried Bony and Christian Benteke as mid-long term replacements.

In defence lies a critical decision, however. If we extrapolate Saints’ clean sheet form (70%) through to the season’s end, they’d pick up another 19 from the remaining 27 games.

To put that into perspective, the tightest defences of the past three seasons produced less for the whole campaign on average – Chelsea and Manchester City’s 18 in 2013/14 and 2012/13 respectively, and Manchester United’s 20 in 2011/12. Given that Southampton have bagged seven already, that additional 19 clean sheets projection now looks massively inflated, and a quick glance at the glorious vista through the rear window of the Saints bandwagon gives an inclination as to why (Saints’ last ten: WBA, whm, NEW, swa, QPR, tot, SUN, STO, hul, LEI). In contrast, the forecast for Saints’ next nine isn’t quite so bright (MCI, ars, MUN, bur, EVE, cpl, CHE, ARS, mun). With Chelsea offering deluxe packages to the promised land of clean sheet consistency, and Swansea and Aston Villa advertising fair weather trips for any budget, it seems that Villa Park could make an apt interchange for Fantasy managers planning defensive budgets for the journey ahead.

Spencer says…
I currently have three Southampton players; Bertrand, Clyne, and Pelle. I’ve had Clyne from the beginning, and when Pelle since Gameweek 5, and Bertrand in Gameweek 6. Pelle has been consistent for me, but with fixtures stiffening and cheaper options with more favourable fixtures becoming available (Diafra Sakho, Saido Berahino, maybe even Danny Ings), I think it’s time to ditch the big Italian.

The defence is not such an easy decision, however. Rightly or wrongly, I’ve experimented with a number of double-ups in defence this season (West Brom, Newcastle and Southampton), with the Saints pairing being the most successful by far.

My double Southampton defence feels like a Toyota Prius; reliable but just a bit dull. My current thinking is that I’m going to break up this pairing and go for something cheaper like a Peugeot 207, aware that every now and then it will break down, but knowing that with the money saved, I can get also get a slightly more exciting Volkswagen Golf. With a little bit of shopping around, I might even stumble on a GTI!

Mark says…
I’ve already nailed my colours to the mast here – shedding Bertrand somewhat prematurely in Gameweek 10 in order to fund an urgent move for Alexis Sanchez. Looking ahead, I knew I could turn to Calum Chambers in my 3-4-3 and that Bertand’s forthcoming fixures threatened to produce a run of 2-pointers.

I won’t be considering Southampton’s rearguard again until they’ve navigated through Gameweeks 13-15. If they show resilience through that spell, I may plan to invest again and I suspect I’ll still be able to pick up Toby Alderweireld for 5.0 should that be the case.

In attacking areas, my soft spot for Tadic could be my undoing. He’s one of those players you want to keep for the silky deft touches on Match of the Day and the huge Opta numbers he produces week on week. However, the big return of Gameweek 8 is a fading memory after three consecutive blanks, making the trip to Villa’s a big one for myself and other Tadic converts.

I still think he can offer value – there’s a cast of mid-price assets on show this season and, while Tadic is pricey by comparison, I’ve faith that, with set-piece duties and penalties, the Serb schemer can deliver points to warrant his price tag – even against stiff opposition.

Another blank at Villa might just change my mind. Fantasy football is fickle like that.

Applebonkers says…
First of all I really wish Ronald Koeman was my dad. He just seems so nice, so happy, so wise. However, can we trust someone who seems so perfect? Of course not, he’s definitely hiding something, that’s just how it works. The upcoming run of fixtures definitely has the potential to expose his bizarrely placed third nipple and his chronic flatulence problem.

I’m sure I’m not saying anything particularly interesting or enlightening here but those fixtures are filthy. They have showed enough signs that they will compete in these big games but I reckon this will be more in an attacking sense than defensively. This could still mean there is something in Clyne and Bertrand but are this pair really in the Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman echelons of play anyway in case of attacking points? I think they’re still in the clean sheets are bread and butter camp.

I’d definitely let go of their centre backs but Frazer Forster is trickier due to save points and the “limpet-ablity” of goalkeepers, so I’m 50/50 there. That leaves the attacking players. Can they be relied on to keep it going like former stalwarts Le Tissier, Beattie and Dia? I don’t think any of them showed enough against Liverpool, West Ham, Swansea or Tottenham. Bank the price rises and hope for more of the same, especially from “statzilla” Tadic.

Particularly disappointed in myself for picking Coutinho, that was a bad decision spurred on by my red-tinted glasses and the preseason 4-0 win over Dortmund, and at the time I didn't know he wasn't the best FPL asset.

Begovic, Krul, Chambers, Clyne, Wisdom, and Sterling and been permanent fixtures in my team so far.

2nd year playing. Last year finished 143k. This year I'm currently 24k. To me though I'm not that serious & I have fun by taking multiple hits each week. Surprisingly the hits have improved my rank each week & the 1 game week I played it conservatively & only used my ft I actually had a crap week & my rank dropped. I have already done a -4 hit this week & I'm actually considering another couple of hits. I love the trade rage.

Why are people so quick to criticize Tadic for his one week explosion, when his stats are as good as Hazard's (if not better)? Loads of people are buying Hazard on the hope of catching that one good GW, so to me it seems that being "explosive but inconsistent" is seen as a good thing for Hazard but not for Tadic for some reason.

I think it's different because people have actually seen Hazard do this in past seasons, with him bringing home the bacon after promising stats...FFS posters have been awarded for their patience in the Belgian lad.

Tadic has just joined the league, so not many have seen him play + so far, he's only returned big once...so the assumption based on that is he's just someone who'll produce the stats without any actual solid points output, or at least consistently.

      Or something like that.. 😆

Good answer, I'll accept that explanation.

Should be interesting to see how Tadic does in the next run of games. If he starts to put up some more points he might find himself back in my squad again, as I think his price is excellent compared to the stats he's putting up.

I agree. Overall that 23 pts was warranted based on his underlying stats. Unusually all his points came in a flood. I'm looking at the tadic > hazard transfer and tadic stats continue to make me nervous. Hazard does have the epl conversion history though where as tadic is unknown, could be more like coutinho. Fixtures also strongly in hazard favour

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, thats my view as well. Despite most of his points coming in the same game, nobody can really argue that he doesn't deserve to have 1 goal and 6 assists thus far based on his underlying numbers. In fact I'd suggest that he deserves to be closer to Fabregas based on having made more key passes and taken twice as many shots (see whoscored.com for details). Nobody has a higher KP/g ratio than Tadic this season.

I don't think you can fault people for putting their trust in Hazard though, given his history. He's a safe bet, and Tadic's fixtures aren't great. I just question the logic in the double-standards, and bringing in Hazard because "he's due an explosion".

The points were warranted overall but not really for that game. It was a fluke game 8-0. Wont happen again and if you factor it as being a shock week (I know not really fair to dismiss his big haul and all) then his returns aren't that great. Like saying Chambers is a great pick cos he picked up an 18pt haul the other week, but really we know better.

I understand that, I guess what I'm saying is he has been unlucky in a lot of games and very lucky in one game so overall his luck has evened out a bit but he has still been a bit unlucky based on his contribution.

True I do think he's been unlucky. But it's not him really thats doing anything wrong. It's more relying on others. hazard on the other hand just needs to get his shooting boots on 😆

I think its a minor fluke whenever any defender gets 15+ points outside of Baines, Coleman, or Ivanovic, but it was hardly that shocking that an Arsenal fullback would get a CS vs Burnley and chip in with an assist perhaps. He's had pretty solid attacking stats recently too so imo it wasn't a complete fluke (its not like Aly Cissokho suddenly scoring a brace for example).

Fwiw, I happen to agree that his points haul hasn't been great outside that GW, so will be trading him for Siggy next week, despite what the stats say about the sustainability of his offensive output (beyond key passes that is!).

He's not really a good FPL asset because of rotation though. If Clichy were injured and City revert to last seasons form then I'll probably buy him though.

As I said above, I don't think there's anything wrong with using history as the basis of a transfer (afterall thats what we all go by with stats, which are just that - history).

What I was questioning was the double-standards for different players who both have similar stats, where one is almost mocked because of having an explosive haul, whereas for someone else its because they're "due", which I think is nonsense.

hazard is 'due' cos he has done it before
tadic is 'due' cos they think he looks like a likely lad that might have done it before ,but he hasn't

therefore if you accept the 'due' concept being returning to the 'norm' hazard's hopers are correct and tadic's hopers are only projecting a future wished for norm

i own both hazard and tadic which means i'm a big hoper or a complete pillock......

Tbh, they dont compare stats, they talk abt previous seasons, just because Hazard has achieved 200pts in last 2 season doesn't mean he will by default score 200pts this season too.
Explosion imminent, flat track bully or whatever are all BIAS views imo, as you said, simply nonsense.

I think the stats suggest that there is more points-per-million value elsewhere.

eg. Siggy, Oscar, Fabregas, Sterling, Downing.

I'm not interested in a 200-point player if his cost unbalances my team and means my next best player will only score 140. I'd rather have two 170 point scorers who cost significantly less. (very simplistic view I know, but I think you get my point).

In a bit of a definsive predicament. Say Baines is fit, then my defence is

Baines (WHM), Bertrand (AVL), Chambers (MUN) ( Moore (SUN), Hutton (sout))

Really don't want to start Chambers at home to united. Was thinking about Moore, risky considering leicester have only kept 1 CS and he might make a cameo but I'd probably prefer to start him over Chambers.

Thoughts? Start Chambers, Hutton (if fit) or Moore?

On the subject of Hazard's stats over the past four week (from the last page), I think he has produced just about what his stats suggest he should have produced. He's was a reasonable choice during that period, but the only stand out midfielder was Sanchez.

That's true, but he's the only real source of pens for Chelsea (the others' playing styles are really conducive to winning pens). He has mastered the art of sticking his arse in front of other players so they trip him up.

        A statistical view on Hazard:

Sort by Touches in the Box per minute, and then compare that to his Chances-per-minute and Shots-in-the-box per-minute:
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/midfielders/kpi-attacking/

Hazard looks to be getting in the box loads, but just isn't shooting. Could it be because of Costa? Hazard used to cut in from the left and drive across the 18 yard box to find space to shoot, but with Costa there he almost always goes down the line instead, or passing it off to Costa, Oscar, or Fabregas. In short, Chelsea seem to be less dependent on him for goals this season (apart from penalties), as Oscar and Costa have become more prolific (shots and goals), and Fabregas has taken over the creative mantle.

I would also recommend looking at Hazard's KPI comparison with last season:
        http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-stats/midfielders/kpi-attacking/
His numbers are significantly decreased (or increased very little) in almost all the important areas.

He did look impressive against Liverpool, but as far as his stats are concerned I don't think he's should be scoring significantly higher than he currently is. In summary, his Touches-in-the-box tell one story, but the more important stats like Chances and Shots-in-the-Box tell another.

Stats doesn't reflect a lot on the quality of the player. And in Eden's case, this is very much applicable. For anyone who watched the Liverpool game, you could see he was making a special effort to up his goal threat. It's only the calm before the storm, I'm sure.

Maybe, maybe, but the stats just don't support the hype. I'm not saying he's a bad choice and I know he has a history of being streaky, but it feels like the community here is whipping itself into a bit of a fervour. So far this year the community has generally got things right (if people waited long enough) but I remain doubtful of Hazard's value at present when there are other good options at similar prices, lower prices or from the same team.

I think the Watchlist is based more on projected/predicted points rather than current form or recent points. If it was going to be identical to FPL's "form" stat there would be no point having it... At least that's the only explanation I can think of for Ivan being that high!

"Gonna" is not misspelled. It's a verbal contraction that is commonly used in informal speech and written communication.

In contrast, "your" was misspelled for the particular use in question.

Umm no that's the order of the watchlist. Within it is the form part, which has him at a B. Chambers is also at B form despite getting 25 points in 3 games.

It's done by the scouts. Nothing to do with Trigger...

The order of the watchlist is not based on FPL's "form" stat (which is ppg in last 4 gw's).... otherwise how do you explain Ivan being 2nd for defenders?

I use the redandwhitekop forum. Its the best Liverpool related forum imo, and also has a page for general/league-related topics, and also lists all the best team pages for other clubs too, which I sometimes dive into if I need some more info.

For the most part though there's usually someone on here who can answer any questions I have regarding players so I've stopped looking at those sites as much recently.

It's this point in the season where all of the teams start looking exactly the same. The question is; do you risk breaking away from the mould or do you stick to the template and hold your position, relying on good captain choices to bump yourself up the rankings?

1)there will always be some "essential" players like Costa and Aguero

2)People you're talking about are on this site mainly. I've done a few rmts on other sites with 3-4 different players from that template and people were in awe

          3) Templates keep changing. 4 weeks earlier Aguero and Sanchez were not in everybody's team..

Personally I'll love It if Rooney and Walcott get a hat trick to switch everything up

I really do think that the answer to that question lies within your current rank. If you are in the top 10k or in a position where you don't need to make up that much ground, I think template with 2-3 differentials is perfect. However if you are lagging behind the pack, more differentials will be required to make up the ground. You have to remember that a differential is only good if he is better than the template pick. No point ignoring the likes of Costa/Kun/Alexis etc. to get in a "unique" player who is producing a lower output.

Exactly, a couple of punts are always good, but the template is "the template" for a reason. FPL is all about being proactive, rather than reactive. Holding players too long is the biggest mistake you can make.

yeah agree. just a few examples this season that turns out that holding a player too long is bad

            a) holding mata instead of swapping to fab

            b) holding ramsey instead of swapping to ADM

            c) holding sterling instead of swapping to sanchez

            d) holding hazard when fab is performing consistently

of cos no1 can actually predict..but sometimes it just shows being proactive is the key.

    3. money face bandwagon

teams will never stay the same..only like 5gw ago everyone is having the same midfield which includes siggy fab ADM sterling..but look what 5gw does to everyone's midfield. Only people who refuse to change to better options will be left behind.

Be patient, stay away from making unnecessary punts..let the options appear themselves.

I think the teams already started diverging from the template a couple of weeks ago in GW10, with people going different ways on Sanchez and Baines. Costa's injury situation also made alot of people sell him to break away from the mold. There's alot of options at every price range in most positions too so alot of choices for people to makes. Eg:

      Def: Baines/Ivan/Coleman, Clyne/bert/janmaat/etc, 4.5's, 3.9-4.1's
      Mids: Sanchez/ADM/Haz/Fab... Tadic/Oscar/Sterling.... Siggy/Downing/Chadli
      Fwds: Costa/Aguero/(and now Sturridge)... Pelle/Welbeck.... Sakho/Austin

Agreed on all points here. I'm basically in two minds about getting Costa in now or waiting a short while. I can just see him getting a recurring niggle or his 5th yellow as soon as I get him back in.

He's a risk to not own though.

I suppose at least you can easily swap him for Sturridge now.

Hazard is not overrated. You've to understand the real pundits only compare his playing style to the likes of Ronaldo & Messi but not his output. As far as FPL & FFS is concerned there have been always contrasting opinions regarding him. 1 or 2 goals from open play in last 22 PL games is fairly poor stat for his standards but I dare you to say that he won't improve on that performance in next 20. FPL is not about past points but it's about potential of future hauls. He has been consistently playing very well this season (1 bad game against Villa) and for last 3-4 GWs had significantly increased number of shots. May not worth multiple hits but he's the 2nd best MF to own after Alexis atm. so definitely not overhyped IMO. If he improves those finishing skills then his immense potential will come to the fore.

    1. rickardinho
      • 11 Years

In FPL terms he has had more than 1 bad game though, and that's what counts on here.

Maybe stop being so fixated on the past yeah? The key to FPL is not to get players in after they've had good scores, but before.

But thats exactly my point - everyone is so fixated on what Hazard has done in the past (200 points...), that they are ignoring the fact that his stats this season - which are more recent and thus a more accurate view of what will happen - don't suggest that he will reach 200 points at his current rate.

As an aside, I'd appreciate it if you could stop patronizing me with every reply, or failing that just stop replying to my posts entirely. Thanks.

              1. You're making an assumption there that isn't true. I have watched a lot of Chelsea games this season.

              2. I disagree on the stats though, as his stats for the season are very representative of how he has played so far:

              GW's 1-7: 9 shots in total, GW8-11: 20 shots in total. A clear upturn.

I think we have come to an agreement that he has improved, but it would have been easier if you had used some numbers to construct your arguments. A little less verbal abuse would have been helpful too.

putting stats aside..i really rate his performance against liverpool..and that is enough for me to be nervous about not having him against westbrom..and is enough for me to make an "emergency" plan to get him if he scores well.

You're right it's not about past points it's about future potential etc but past stats tell a story. I expect him to step it up but it's not just purely bad luck that he's not converted enough in the last 20 games. Confidence infront of goal plays a bit part in goals.

The stats table I'm looking at puts him behind four other players this season and roughly on a par with a fifth, much cheaper, player. Yes, it's not about his past game but his future game... but no one can see the future. All we can do is extrapolate from the past and factor in the future fixtures. And while Hazard has improved over the last four, both in terms of what we see with the eye and what we see in the stats, the data does not rank him as a stunning prospect at his current price. A decent prospect, yes, but not a stunning one.

    Morning people

Anybody catch last night's games? Sterling looked quite decent to me.

And a thought about Henderson as he started as a number 10 in their last game. Will not get as many points as Sterling but if there are to be investments in Liverpool dyou think he plays a part?

I think Sterling will be 'essential' again soon. Sturridge makes a big difference because he drags defenders all over and creates space in behind.

Hendo won't be playing 10 every week. Sterling and Coutinho will more regularly be occupying that position.

I think that Henderson will return to being a solid 6.0 pick once Liverpool get up-and-running again. He's pretty much nailed-on and is trying to get into the box more this season. Could be a natural replacement for Downing in a few weeks if their respective form changes.

          Yup. Exactly my thought

For a deep mid his involvement in goals is very high.

It's a futile discussion till they catch some form though. Probably getting kicked out of the champions league will be a blessing in disguise

Agree on his goal involvement. Love those quick back-heel chops he does for most of his assists around the box too, like the one for Lallana's WBA goal 🙂

I don't think dropping out of the CL would be a blessing really, as it would only see them drop into the EL instead which would be more of a burden than the likely R16 exit against a European powerhouse.

Imo its not the fitness between Thursday-Sunday that's the issue, its the fact that there is only 1 day of light training ahead of the league game when you're in the EL, so even if you rest a bunch of players the coaching staff wouldn't have enough time on the training pitch to prepare them adequately for the weekend game.

Liverpool have been unlucky with injuries suffered in internationals, which were out of their control (eg. Sturridge, Allen, Can), rather than due to overplaying people, so I wouldn't agree with that.

BR has stated on several occasions that his plan was to use last season's team as much as possible in the beginning, and introducing one or max. two new faces each game. Instead, those injuries have forced him to give too much responsibility to players who weren't tactically ready to slot in.

For example, Manquillo over Johnson, Moreno straight in at the Etihad due to both Flanagan and Enrique being injured, Can straight into the midfield, Lallana just back from injury without a preseason, and most of all, Balotelli being given the unfair responsibility of being the sole striker with the massive burden of carrying a struggling team up front on his own - had Sturridge been fit I'm sure Balotelli would have been eased in and received far less criticism than he has.

Martinez has chosen to play his big guns in EL so far (Baines and Lukaku have featured in most of those) and it has backfired somewhat in the league. I'd say that Martinez gambled and it didn't pay off, whereas Rodgers has been forced into a lot of his selections due to injuries.

okay you'll know the line ups played much better than me but
-flanagan +wisdom (self imposed)-have left liverpool without their 2 best full backs agreed.
-treatment of lambert has been shocking
-surely BR should have realised that playing borini and ballotell together all the time was best chance of getting best out of both of them?
-use of tried and tested gerrard and sterling has seem somewhat random?

                    - Flanagan hasn't left, he had surgery on his knee in August iirc.
                    - Wisdom needed game time first and foremost, so it made sense to send him out to another PL club where he would be a regular starter.
                    - Lambert knew he wouldn't be first-choice. He got cameos against Southampton and City, before a start in the cup against Middlesbrough - a game he was even made captain for. His form has been really disappointing for the most part, probably weighed down by self-imposed expectations as he seems to be trying too hard when he plays.
                    - Borini and Balotelli played up top from the start at West Ham, and were awful together.
                    - Gerrard has started pretty much every game iirc, apart from RM. Villa and WHM man-marked him, so BR was forced to explore ways to get him away from that static role to unlock him from the man-marking, which made perfect sense. Not a long-term plan but its smart to have the tactical option to switch him during games, but for the most part he's played in the holding role still.
                    - Sterling can play anywhere in the front 3, as a winger, as a second striker, or at the tip of the diamond, so its no surprise to see him used in a variety of roles. He did that last season to good effect.

Villa: SOT, bur, cry, LEI, wba, UTD, swa, SUN, CRY, lei
Burnley: stk, VIL, NEW, qpr, SOT, tot, LIV, city, new, QPR
Guzan have good fixture set on paper, so him.

Villa have the worst defensive stats out of any team in their last 6-7 games. Most big chances and shots against. I wouldn't touch them if I were you.

Foster-Krul are the 4.5's you should get imo.

He only gave two options plus non-rotating, so no choice 😀

If you asked me "Cancer or Polio", I wouldn't choose one of them, but instead I'd say "neither". 🙂

When presented with two bad options, its worth considering someone else 🙂

Fair enough 😀 Though none of the players in that price bracket have good fixtures for long term 😛

Newcastle just kept CS's at the Etihad and against Liverpool, who are admittedly both off form, but still, a CS is a CS.

I'm sticking to my Krul-Begovic rotation until the Jan-WC.

So close to the Jan. WC, isn't that a waste of a FT?

I have Duff as well, so sooner or later my "balls to walls" Burnley double up will go tits up.

They've got some nice fixtures coming up though. I've got Forster and Heaton in my draft team and I'll be playing Heaton over Forster in 6 of the next 11 gw's I think. Their respective fixtures couldn't match up any better really, and I think Heaton is good for 2-3 CS's in those 6 games based on their defensive record so far.

Doubling-up might be a bit much though! 🙂

Stay clear of both. Both teams are very poor defensively

    Morning gents,

Just read the Baines news. Would you use a FT on this lot if Baines and Hutton are ruled out?

    Ivanovic Clyne Moore (Hutton Baines)

baines won't miss more than one game imo, in fact he has a good chance of being fit for the west ham game 🙂

if he is ruled out though maybe Hutton/Moore ---> Collins?

Moore to Collins is a possibility yes...But he might lose his place soon. Don't you think Yun/Dummett are better options? With december approaching, I would need nailed on players!

Moore could get a CS at home vs Sunderland though if he starts... not likely, but probably as likely as Collins getting one at Everton 😉

'If he starts' being the key words here. I could end up with 10 players if he doesn't 😉

Surely worth the risk rather than spending -4 and having "if he starts" on Collins instead, who would probably only get a 1 or 2 pointer anyways...

It's not for a hit, for a FT.

I view every FT as a hit my friend! 😉

If you wouldn't take a hit for it, its probably not worth it. At least that's true of most transfers barring injuries or Aguero.

doesn't look like losing his place tbh...but anyway yun looks good - dummett will have competition from santon 🙂

      Morning mate,

I'd save FT. You'll only want Baines back the following week(or probably gw14 since everton are at city gw13!)

Villa's defense is really poor (as you are well aware of), so i would look to ship Hutton soon though.

I won't be shipping Baines out, that's for sure. I'd only want him back later as you said 😉

What I meant to ask was if both Baines and Hutton are ruled out this week, would you use a FT to ship Moore out (given that he is the least nailed on of the lot)? And if yes, which defender of 4.4 or under do I get? I would prefer someone who is nailed on with the December fixtures approaching 😉

Looking at the ticker, I'd suggest Wisdom, or Caulker if you can squeeze him in.

With cheap defenders you need to look at rotations more than fixtures, because a 4.0 def with 5 of 6 bad fixtures can be great if you only need him for that 1 good fixture out of 6.

I agree... Already have Foster too 🙂
I'll have a look then, and hope and pray that Hutton and Baines are fit!
