Fernando Torres is an early doubt for Chelsea’s weekend trip to Stoke after reportedly suffering concussion whilst playing for Spain this evening.

The striker lined up for the Spanish against Italy in tonight’s friendly but lasted just 14 minutes before being forced off with a head injury.

Medical staff are expected to examine Torres before offering a further assessment. Already they are insisting that his withdrawal was purely a precaution.

However, if Torres has suffered concussion, he would seem likely to be forced to sit out of the trip to Britannia.

There are already doubts over Andre Villas-Boas’ team selection for Sunday’s game with Torres unable to take his opportunity to impress in the pre-season. Didier Drogba’s physical presence against Tony Pulis’ muscular outfit may well have been preferred regardless of the availability of the £50 million Spaniard.

Drogba was also in action tonight, scoring his 50th international goal via a penalty in Ivory Coast’s 4-3 victory against Israel in Geneva.

Torres is currently owned by over 88,000 Fantasy Premier League managers – Drogba currently claims almost double that figure.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      1) By my opnion, you invest very much in defence. As Serb, I must admit that Vidic wasn't very good in last two games he played (C.Cup and yesterday's friendly against Russia) and consider trade for Smalling 😉 Lescott and Daws are ok, trade Coloccini for Senderos (bargain for 4.5 and 99% as starter for Jol's Fulham) and if there is some money left, buy Jose Enrique (he is linked with L'pool and there he will be starter without true competiton for 5.0).
      2) Trade Huddlestone for Formica - Argentinian played very good in preseason games as FWD, so he will get in chances and (I hope so) score and assist for many points 🙂
      3) Consider Holt simply because we all remember what happened with B'pool on last season's opener 😀

      greeting from Serbia 😉

I've seen a lot of people doubling up on City defence (Kompany + Lescott) and having no Chelsea cover.

I can see why this is attractive but GW2+3 don't look great prospects and if you're doubling up and City concede you might be in trouble.

Are people with this tactic planning on transferring in a Chelsea defender once they know who's starting?

Is A.Cole just too expensive for you?

I have Kompany and 6.5 left for another defender. I want a Chelsea defender and will probably get Luiz but he may not play. Either i am going to get Lescott and wait for Luiz or take a risk on Bosingwa.

At the moment Bosingwa looks the most likely, hoping AVB will tell us tomorrow.

I have to Cole to start with and assume I will swap for Luiz as and when things become clear... but that's a big assumption. I wouldn't have 2 City defs.

I'm beginning to have my doubts about Kompany for the short term, you're right the week 2 and week 3 fixtures aren't amazing - and given that he carries no attacking threat I'm not sure he's worth the dosh for the time being. Lescott I can understand - he at least gets forwar for the corners, Kompany stands on the half way line.

If you only had one City defender and had to choose, at the moment Lescott looks like the best choice. After GW3 though he could be a victim of rotation, with Champions League and Toure coming back.

If you go with 1 City defender, the question is whether you commit a transfer/risk rotation with Lescott.

If you decide Lescott is defo in your team, then you're forced to choose between Chelea cover (A.Cole 7.5 secure, Ivanovic 7.0 & Luiz 6.5 less secure, Bosingwa 5.5 plain risky!) or go for a nailed on Kompany who is cheaper than most but would mean doubling up on City.

        Hmmmmm....

I guess my fear with Kompany is that if Swansea nick a goal, and that's not out of the question, you could easily end up with sod all from Kompany for the first 3 and on that basis I'd rather sp[end the money elsewhere.

At the moment I've pencilled in Cole, Warnock, Givet and two ultra cheapies which would give me for the first 3 weeks:

      (stk) (WOL) (BOL)
      (WBA) (BLA) (WIG)
      (NOR) (WOL) (EVE)

      ...which doesn't look too disastrous.

One thing I hate about this site is that any RMT which strays from the generic FFS approved team immediately gets rubbished.

On another point, how secure is Luiz in the Chelsea team? I currently have Cole but Luiz is £1m cheaper and Cole doesn't seem to get many attacking points whereas Luiz might get the odd goal.

That's what I was doing. But then I thought...that's going to cost me a transfer either way...but if I went with (say) Luiz in the first place then there's a chance I won't have to use a transfer (if he is playing) or, worst case, I have to use a transfer but I'm no worse off as I would have used on anyway. Make sense?

If Luiz, Ivanovic or Bosingwa cement a place I think any of the 3 would be a better bet than Cole this season. Cheaper and I reckon just as much/more attacking threat.

People often make that complaint, but the generic FFS team is not a random selection, it's the one that stands up best to criticism. The more people discuss it the closer people get to a consensus/optimum selection of players.

Usually if the group has missed something and it is articulated by someone, the consensus will change accordingly. I think it's pretty effective overall, and it's a good starting point from which to make your own tweaks depending on your personal preference/strategy.

Good counter, but I think it is stands up best to *whose* criticism... I would venture that, there would be a correlation between the RMT process with those that need help and are more prepared to share their rationalising and strategic decisions. (Hence) consensus and optimum will not be the same thing.

EG I did far far worse after finding this site last season, as I lost track of my own strategic capabilities; they became more externalised and fractured... hence bandwagons o'clock and kneejerk reactionism! Again, need to separate consensus and optimum concepts.

For GW1 I'd rather have Zog'n'Drog, but if Torres is back for GW2 I can see AVB wanting to get him going in an easyish game and that could mean rotation for Drogba - so I'm not sure I'm prepared to have that sort of headache so early in the season.

I'm still not tempted by Drogba. Even if he plays GW1 he might not play GW2. Torres and Drogba will be rotated all season long... Unless a clear 1st choice emerges it's way too much money to have in a player who may or may not start.

only thought is that maybe your frontline is weak, but i'm thinking something similar myself and plan on rotating Holt & Moses, see below:-

      Given (Ruddy)
Cole Kompany Simpson Orr Taylor (Swansea) – rotate 4.0m defenders
      Silva Malouda Nani N’Zogbia (Moses)
      RVP Holt Johnson

Before my trades, I had this team:

        Given (Ruddy)
        Luiz Hughes Kompany (Simpson Gabbidon)
        Sinclair Taarabt Moses Silva Malouda
        Rooney Carroll (Holt)

While the forward line is stronger, it's a bit of a generic team, hence why I made the trades. Plus I'm not sure if Ivan would play or not.

Oh my goodness. Your team is almost exactly the same as mine, with the exception of me having Orr instead of Gabbidon (both players are pretty much the same anyways). I was planning on doing Silva -> N'Zogbia in GW 2, but I'm a bit worried that I don't have Sessegnon. Is he simply another bandwagon or is he genuine? Thanks.

I actually think my team is similar to my mate's too. But hey, if we've both picked the same players, I must be doing the right thing!

About Sessegnon, I had him, but when I realised Taarabt is staying, I decided to go for Taarabt instead. I think he'll work out better than Boselli though. He played up front at the end of last season and scored a few didn't he?

Yup, and he has scored 3 goals and been their main goal-scoring threat throughout pre-season. The only negative is that his opening fixtures aren't too great, which is why I currently have Taarabt instead of him. Still waiting for someone to change my mind about this!

Young for me - looked just as dangerous as Nani plus he's on set pieces.

I'm not sure I fancy either for the first 3, I'd have Lescott or none of them. Clichy is a rotation risk, Kompany doesn't get forward ever.

I would work out a coin toss league to choose between those 3.

Cheers stilicho, I think I will go with Young.

Agree Kompany is zero goal threat but cant afford anyone else from City thats not a def starter.

Instead of picking one of those 3 City front men, would I cover any heavy scoring with just David Silva?

I'm going with Silva, I'm not super-duper-excited by the prospect but you know he'll play, should get into dangerous areas and will get a decent number of set pieces.

I'm really unsold on most of the higher priced MF's this year and so my team currently has 4 players valued between 5-7.5m with Malouda, who I see as the best high MF option.

    My FWD's and def total 27.5. GK's 9.0.

    Am I screwed?

I think it's all personal preference. I'm going 2-2-2 in that I'll have two big priced players in each position, hopefully giving me an easier route to transfer in the form players once we know who they are, without taking points hits.

Ivanovic/Kompany, Nani/Malouda, RVP/Suarez is the current but I will of course need to assess if they need to change due to injuries etc. RVP maybecome Rooney etc.

Yeah I was thinking of doing the same by downgrading one of my mid-priced MF's to Dyer or Surman or someone like that (or by reducin the cost of my 2 high-priced def's, Baines & Lescott) but then that ugly word rotation jumps out at me every time and I just can't make the decision.

Well, here it is: Bosingwa has seemed central to AVB in the preseason matches. There has been 1 rumour about his transfer, much hyped, but gone very quiet now. It is abundantly clear that most of the Chelsea back line are nowhere near fit - and there are Ashley's ankles to consider. What do you think?

If he does the first three for me - job done!

just for the fun of it i'm putting up my team along with my rationale..
    Cech (Ruddy)
    Kompany Baines Warnock Simpson Orr
    Sessegnon Taraabt Sinclair Moses Ohara
    Rooney Carroll Bent

Cech i 'll keep all season and..
Cech + Warnock + Ruddy + Orr cheaper than
    Given + Kenny + A.Cole + 4.5 defender.

Can always downgrade baines to u upgrade one of my mids whenever uncertainty(malouda, nani, silva(scoring potential), arsenal mid) becomes less
Plus Moses/Ohara rotate perfectly, and so do sinclair and taraabt

RVP, Suarez, Drogba/Torres, Tevez/Aguero look like having more potential than any midfielder i can think of.. once things become clearer i'll be able to swap my frontline for them with ease..
Thanks for your time.. later then
