Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening as Fantasy managers quickly turn their attentions to the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

After his midweek demolition of Sunderland, Sergio Aguero is head and shoulders above any other candidate as City prepare for the visit of Everton. Selected by 52% of voters so far, the Argentine – in spite of his superb season – has surprisingly blanked in three of his six home appearances and has managed only one double-figure haul at the Etihad to date. The Toffees roll up to Manchester in poor defensive form, though – without a clean sheet on their travels all season, Roberto Martinez’ side have conceded in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both fancied to deliver the goods away to Newcastle. Costa has delivered more yellow cards than goals on the road (five to four) and has notched just once in his last three away trips but having missed out due to suspension in midweek, he’ll be raring to go against the injury-hit Magpies. Hazard has yet to score on his travels this season – indeed, the Belgian has managed only two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season and has blanked in each of his last four appearances on the road.

Charlie Austin’s superb home form brings the QPR top scorer into consideration, with 7% of the votes cast. The budget striker has racked up four goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road and, up against a Burnley side with a single clean sheet on their travels, he’s looking for a third 10+ points haul in front of his own fans which would fire the R’s out of the drop zone.

After netting Villa’s winner at Palace on Tuesday evening, Christian Benteke is amongst the favourites for a plum home clash with Leicester. The Foxes arrive without suspended skipper Wes Morgan and look unlikely to improve a defensive record which has seen them keep out their opponents in just one of the last 10 Gameweeks.

Alexis Sanchez is also in contention as the Gunners roll up to Stoke. Unlike Chelsea’s Hazard, the Chilean has delivered on the road – four of his nine league goals have arrived outside of the Emirates, suggesting he could be a real differential against a Potters side with a single shut-out since Gameweek 3.

    Hamer Clyne Marney Moore

    Morning dzzzz,

    Foster krul
Clichy chamber yun --- chester naylor.
Sanchez hazard siggy tadic --- arfield
    Kun rooney austin

    A: tadic >> 8.3 mid. Eriksen miralles downing...who else?
    B: tadic + chester >> sterling/oscar/mata + hutton (-4)
    C: tadic + arfield >>> sterling oscar mata + boyd/krancaer/wanyama (-4)

My view is that I don't like eriksen...had him a lot last season but never timed him right..has something changed this year...is he getting into the box more?

So either save cash by going downing I think or take a hit n get oscar.

If want to avoid a hit..try Tadic to Mirallas...else B looks good with Sterling and Hutton..

Sterling I'm saying because he will start performing..can go with a Mata punt as well

Why is Wanyama not being considered as a budget 5th mid. I looked at his goal scoring record and he is way better than Jedinak,Bolasie and Boyd and plays for a way better team. I assume the reason is that most had 3 Saints players (me included) but that is not the case anyway. He even rotates well with Austin's next 2 away games.

Have I got my team right?

    Guzan,
    Baines, Ivanovic, Chambers, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Downing
    Aguero (c), Bony, Austin

    Elliott, Siggy, Boyd, Moore

I'm not sure whether to bench Baines or Siggy. Baines could struggle v MCI away in terms of attacking returns & he won't get a cs. Siggy could struggle away v WHU but could score/assist as well.

Thoughts appreciated & thanks in advance.

I don't need differentials, I'm just outside the top 1K. Benching Chambers could be really risky, I'll probably just play him even if Hutton is more likely to get a shut out.

It's the equivalent of bringing on one defender too many late on in a match to protect a lead. Seems a good idea. But then you realize that instead of playing to win the game all you've done is invited pressure upon yourself. And then inevitably the opposition blows by you.

You realised you have just compared fantasy football to real football?

I'll admit it, playing Chambers is 'safe', but I don't see how that is a 'sad approach'.

For me, it is risk vs. reward, and I'd rather take less of a risk given me decent rank in an early part of the season.

Because youre likely to run into some real problems once things dont go your way and if you fall behind your opponents/start dropping places, youll have no idea what the best thing to do is or the balls to do it because youre always chasing the safe play.

It was a brilliant illustration on my part. If you can't see the parallel that's your fault. Quite simply if Hutton is more likely to get a CS he should play. Being scared to bench Chambers because you reckon few around you will is a defeatist's apporach to the game.

No, as I said its a 'safe' approach. Many others on here play this way, its not just me (I'm not saying that I usually play safe because of others on here, I'm just a logical person).

Well, each to their own muppet, but playing the 'safe' way has got me a decent rank so far.

Thinking about it again now though, I think its pretty close between who is more likely to keep a CS. Chambers with more attacking threat too.

I find it ticklish that Chambers and attacking threat go together. He cant shoot for sh!t and his crosses are looking more like Kyle Walkers than anything else. Kid gets a random goal and assist in one game and suddenly hes Cafù up in this.

Have you actually seen him play? Hes not very attacking. He cant shoot, he wouldnt have above 45 on crossing on Fifa stats (lawl) and he cant pass his man. I mean hes young and talented and all that jazz, but c`mon. The attacking threat he presents i think is pretty low.

I find it funny that you automatically assume I'm an Arsenal fan.

                        1. I'm not.

                        2. I don't particularly rate him irl either, he is a good fantasy option, however.

Howd you assume that that was my assumption? It was not. Ive no idea how you came to that. Hes an overrated option and those that have owned him have been extraordinarily paid for their "risks". Although im pretty sure that you for one got him in later rather than sooner, judging by what youve told so far.

Staying clear of all differentials is a good way to ensure yourself that you 1) wont climb the rankings further and 2) more likely than not wont find yourself repeating high scores if you ever get off to a slow start. My take on the game is that you should always go with the ones you think are likely to score the most points, no if ands or buts.

I appreciate you opinion. If you think about it though, I'd say Chambers and Hutton are equally likely to keep a clean sheet, so it is safer to play Chambers.

I see your point though, but playing one highly owned defender isn't going to prevent me from getting a high score, just like it didn't this week.

I actually think Villa are favourites to keep the CS, given that their "tightness" goes in patches, and theyre clearly in such a patch right now. Also, Leicester are abysmal, and Stoke away are no easy place for any team to travel.

And no, youre completely right. Playing it safe and selecting Chambers most likely wont slow your overall score down or anything like that. Theres not even anything wrong with playing it safe, it all depends on your motives and such. I just think its a flawed attitude to have in general, and towards this game in particular. Doesnt mean im right or wrong, its just my take.

Yeah it is pretty close, it could go either way imo.

1 CS or not from a high owned player in the top 10K isn't going to have a large effect on my season.

That's fair enough, each to their own. I'm a numbers person so playing it safe and logical is natural to me I guess.

Im a numbers person too, i love statistics around this game and base a lot of me decisions on what data i can collect from it. But usually at the end of the day i go for the thing that I believe in, not just what i think most people around me will do. I dont mean to step on anybodys toes or anything, but that kind of sounds like a grey mouse.

But like the great gods of Seinfeld once said; Not that theres anything wrong with that.

Well yes, but the way I see it is a Hutton blank and a Chambers CS could see me lose points compared to the other 60% is that play him in the top 10K. That, to me, is a logical approach.

Whether you think that is 'sad' or whatever, that's fine. But that's not the way I play the game, and it has certainly worked for me so far.

What that screams to me is that youre very content of staying put and it would probably lead to your chances of climbing beeing very slim.

Like Papa Wallenda once said. Life is on the wire. The rest is just waiting.

The reason I say this is because we're not halfway through the season yet and there's a lot more players behind 1k who can get it right and overtake than players in front who'll get it wrong. The chances of dropping down the rankings are higher, without doubt.

If Player X can stay there until GW30 (to take a random GW late in the season) then the point difference between some ranked, say, 5k places behind is more than it is now. It is harder for that person to overtake.

It's the old marathon not a sprint thing. Absolutely no shame in playing a bit cautiously now. You don't have to be Papa Wallenda (I don't know who this is) every week.

Yep, I agree with you 100%

Each to their own I guess, you can play however you want. But playing cautiously and logically has got me to me current rank.

You said above in one of these posts that you wouldnt want to risk Hutton over Chambers, as it were a big deal. And im guessing your 10 others and captain choices rarely defer from the norm.

You should watch the movie Rounders.

Anyway, like ive said mulitple times. Theres nothing wrong with playing it safe. Many people do this, with success and some with not. I just dont think its the correct approach. But in the end i guess thats why we have each our own team to manage.

'Defer from the norm'. The template team of a few weeks ago has been ripped apart by injuries, suspensions, poor form etc. etc.

Besides, you and I both know that a CS or not from one player does not 'shape' your game week. Not everyone captains the same player or has the same team. I rest my case

I like your side but I question Lampard a little. An impact player who WILL get game time over the busy period could be a good call. Lukaku is bucking the trend and getting points with Everton but you may leave yourself a little week in midfield with rotations a possibility. I recommend you get another big hitter in midfield with your extra dosh.

Probably Lampard which gives you a Downing, Chadli. Burn Lukaku for Kane and then you can have who you want.

Pick 3 to start out of this lot
    Baines
    Azpi
    Hutton
    Chambers
Duff? I could play Audi Hutton chambers but I have to bench baines. Hard to do that. Considering benching siggy n playing baines.

Of course we will. But then there's always a chance. Attacking returns my best hope ATM though. And no, there isn't a choice when the alternative is Moore.

    Hi all,
    Guzan,
    Cahill, Chambers, Wisdom,
    Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Downing,
    Austin, Aguero, Giroud .

    Subs: Clyne, Naylor, Marney, Gilks

    What should I do here?
    4.3m in account. 1 ft

    A. Giroud- Costa.. or
    B. Save and re assess next week...?
    Costa/Rooney/Baines on my radar!

  27. Eze Really?
    • 11 Years
    11 years, 13 days ago

I can't help but think Chelsea's form has been partly down to injury free defenders and Matic backing them up. Jose has been lucky but has limited back line choices with Zouma and Luis being very good alternatives. Poor old Wenger and Van Gaal have been week at the back but I would be interested to know how Jose would fair with the same injury wows. Arsen could have had Debuchy, Mertesaker, Kosi, Monreal, Gibbs fit and play a steady back 4. I think Arsenal will have an upturn in form next year. Views?
