Fantasy managers are on red alert this evening after Sergio Aguero was forced off after just six minutes of City’s 1-0 home win over Everton. Clearly distraught, the Argentine left the pitch in tears amid fears he’s set to spend a spell on the sidelines and post-match, Manuel Pellegrini could offer little to reassure us.

When quizzed on his star striker’s injury, the City boss could only offer:

“Sergio has a knee ligament problem and we will see tomorrow how serious it is. It is not good news and we will see tomorrow when he [visits the doctor] but he won’t be able to play next week. We must wait for the doctor to see how [bad it is] but the important thing is he won’t be fit for the Roma game. We will see tomorrow, but at the moment, we’re not sure [about the length of the injury].”

City travel to Roma on Wednesday in the Champions League and we can certainly expect an early-week prognosis from Pellegrini, affording us time to re-assess our three-man frontlines ahead of the weekend.

Clearly, if Aguero has indeed suffered ligament damage, our worst fears will be realised and could force him out of contention for some time. The South American has lit up the Premier League with 14 goals and three assists and proven the most reliable captaincy contender around – with a goal or assist in 10 of his 15 appearances, Aguero’s explosive potential has seen him serve up hauls of 19, 13 and 16 points in the last eight Gameweeks.

In spite of his displays for Chelsea, Diego Costa, by comparison, has produced a top score of seven points from Gameweek 5 onwards. Whilst the Blues striker is the obvious alternative if Aguero is ruled out, his inability to earn bonus makes him a less appealing captaincy contender. Indeed, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez suffering since moving out wide and Eden Hazard yet to score away from home, Aguero’s possible absence would make the armband conundrum that little bit more difficult in any given Gameweek, as our heavy-hitters struggle for consistency.

Up front, Aguero’s withdrawal came on a day that eight of 14 teams failed to find the net – underlying the paucity of options for our three-man frontlines right now. Charlie Austin’s fine form continued only for the R’s frontman to be sent off against Burnley, leaving the likes of Wilfried Bony, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie the chance to stake a claim for consideration over the next couple of days’ action. Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic could prove unlikely heroes for City but bearing in mind that Aguero has played a part in 65% of his side’s goals when on the pitch this season, the pair have big shoes to fill.

Perhaps we shouldn’t get too ahead of ourselves but Aguero’s previous when it comes to injuries has many owners understandably on edge. Given that City now face Leicester, Palace, West Brom, Burnley and Sunderland in successive matches, we’ll hold fire for now in the hope that Pellegrini’s initial prognosis was wide of the mark but exit plans will be tentatively penciled in as we eagerly await the next update.

Just some early thoughts on next week assuming Aguero is out long term.

    Forster
    Baines, Naylor, Yun, CDawson*, Moore*
    Haz, Sanchez, Siggy, Boyd, Cesc*
    Rooney, Kane, Aguero*

    2 FTs, 0.2 itb

    A: Cesc + Aguero > Yaya + Costa
B: CDawson + Aguero > Terry + up to 10m striker (Dzeko, Jov, Benteke, Bony) - (Boyd comes in for Cesc this week)
    C: CDawson + Aguero > O'Shea/Cresswell + Costa (again re: Boyd)
    D: Something else?

        105.3, quite decent.

A is the obvious one, just considering others as I've had Cesc from GW1 and I love his consistency.

First - you and I have very similar teams, and I really think that the Haz and Fab duo is sufficient if not maybe a little too much for Chelsea attack. Just because Costa is the next highest owned / expensive player does not make him any better of an option than he was yesterday. I do not see any reason to get rid of Fab as he seems to be the Yaya of this season as far as I am concerned and can't stop getting points no matter how deep he is playing. The bonus points he is getting is also just silly at this point, how he got 2 today from being in my estimation the worst player on the pitch for Chelsea is just beyond me. I think that is a very sideways transfer - Fab to Yaya - and a poor reallocation of funds. I am all for getting YYT at this point until the wild card but not at Fabs expense, I fear.

Yeah - I really had some clever moves planned before today's games but it all went to hell. Really not sure which way to go but this seems to be a very important time as a lot of teams are going to go into different directions with the selling of Kun.

Looking ahead, tricky captaincy coming up:

    Costa (HUL)
    Hazard (HUL)
    Alexis (NEW)
    Rooney (LIV)
    Baines (QPR)

Are the standout ones for me.. but which one to pick?

Hull are awful so one of the 2 Chelsea boys I think. Depends on Alexis' rest in midweek and United performance on MNF though.

If Costa is not captained against Hull at home, he will never be captained. One of the easiest fixtures of the year.

    RMT broz!

    De Gea (Krul)

Azpi - Gibbs - Baines (Hutton, Wisdom)

Yaya - Hazard - Sanchez - Siggy (Downing)

    Kane - Rooney - Bojan

1.2M in the bank for Gibbs to city defender perhaps.

    (repost)

    Henderson & Aguero -> Yaya & Cisse?

Would be keeping Fab and Austin, playing 4-4-2 next week (Siggy, Yaya, Sancez, Wanyama) and possibly probably taking a hit for updating Duff or NTaylor to something better later in the week. Is this plan insane?

I've never been any good at the whole price protection thing....
Aguero and Fabregas? Price protected? If so for how long?

Eyeing up Yaya and Rooney as replacements, and don't need to do the transfer immediately as I have spare cash.

Just interested, and it's always nice to make a bit of total value

Yaya played deeper because City started with 2 up front most of the games.
This time they started with Kun alone and Nasri behind, and nothing changed when Kun went off.

A terrible, terrible week so far, and so badly prepared for next week.

    Now, team's like.

    Adrian, Jakupovic,
    *Chambers, Azpi, Hutton, Dummett, Yun,
    Hazard, Sanchez, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Boyd,
    *Aguero, *Austin, Rooney.

I'm surely keeping Austin, but selling Aguero and Chambers.
Anything better than a Chambers+Aguero ➡ Costa + O'Shea I can do right now? Or should I just get Baines ahead of O'Shea?

Or I'd just go O'Shea, and save the cash, I think.

    A) Fabs and Chambers > Downing and Baines

    B) Fabs and Aguero > Y.Toure and Rooney

I wouldn't go there. So inconsistent and potential rotation risk, even more so during Xmas.

i think he is SLIGHTLY safer this season because Delefeou isn't there. At 7.2 and with those fixtures i'm very tempted

Is it time to drop my wildcard on this mess?

    Foster, Myhill
Clyne, Baines, Chambers [RED], Bartley, Steven Taylor [RED]
Yaya, Siggy, Fab [RED], Sanchez, Marney
    Aguero [OUT?], Austin [RED], Benteke

What would your WC team be as of this moment?

depends on TV but assuming Aguero is out for yonks I'd go for Rooney, Costa and 6.0 for my forwards with Yaya, Hazard, Sanchez, ??? + bench fodder in midfield. Azpi, Baines, Zabaleta + two cheapies in defence.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that only leaves me 3.7 to fill ??? in midfield.

Was thinking something along the lines of:

          Clyne, Clichy, Janmaat, Bartley, Yun
          Yaya, Siggy, Hazard, Sanchez, Boyd
          Rooney, Costa, Cisse

then maybe swapping Cisse for Austin when he's back (depending on form of course).

But that's a -4 hit and I'd only be fielding 10 next week even with all my cheapies in 🙁

Aguero the 5th most transferred in player this week..

Rooney or Costa.. which of these is his best replacement?
With Austin and Giroud I may even consider a hit with both in and Baines for Chambers too
