Robin van Persie scores twice as United see off Southampton to move into third. Wayne Rooney and Dusan Tadic bag an assist apiece, whilst Graziano Pelle’s first goal since Gameweek 8 isn’t enough to prevent the Saints slipping to another defeat.

Van Persie at the double

At a time when Sergio Aguero owners are looking for a likely exit route, the United frontman stepped up with a deadly brace to fire his side into third spot last night. There’s no doubt that Van Persie has toiled under Louis van Gaal so far but his recent form suggests he may have turned the corner – that’s three goals, an assist and four bonus points in his last trio of appearances now, and at 12.4 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he is certainly affordable for those holding Aguero. Upcoming opponents Liverpool, Villa and Newcastle have all tightened up in recent outings, though, and with far cheaper options offering better form, the 2%-owned Dutchman may remain a differential for now.

Rooney Ticks Over

The England international arrived at St Mary’s in decent form, having scored in each of his last two league outings. Handed a role alongside Van Persie as Van Gaal turned to a 3-4-1-2 formation, Rooney’s dead-ball duties came to fruition after he provided the assist for the Dutchman’s second. Whilst his minutes have been diminished by suspension and injury this term, Rooney has been relatively consistent for the Red Devils – he’s now scored or assisted in six of his last eight in the league. With Radamel Falcao remaining on the bench for the 90 minutes, Rooney’s more advanced berth may well turn a few more heads, with a 10.4 price tag far easier on the budget than Van Persie’s.

Pelle Ends Goal Drought

The Italian was back amongst the goals at St Mary’s after firing his first strike in seven Gameweeks. Pelle has dropped from 8.5 to 8.1 in recent weeks as his woeful form persuaded plenty to look elsewhere but last night’s strike served a reminder of his abilities and took the Saints summer signing up to second spot amongst forwards in the FPL game. An assist from Dusan Tadic – his first points since Gameweek 8 – suggests Ronald Koeman’s main men still have the potential to deliver ahead of a run which pits them against a trio of opponents (bur, EVE, cpl) that have been far from convincing at the back.

Saints Stutter Again

It’s four matches without a clean sheet now for Ronald Koeman’s side as the stern fixtures prove a test too far. Having conceded just five times in the first 11 Gameweeks, Southampton have since shipped seven goals in the subsequent four, and with Toby Alderweireld joining the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork in the injury room, their toils look set to continue. Koeman’s defence face Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United in the next six and may be best avoided until the schedule smiles kindly again in Gameweek 22.

      not rooney or RVP
Dzeko if you dont have Yaya
Bony if you dont have Siggy
Sakho if you want a cheap player who is playing very well, could easily be worth 7-8m

There is no logical sense in your 'X player if you dont have his teammate'.
If anything, those pairs are heavily correlated (ie if Bony scores, its likely that Siggy assists).

I changed my mind from Rooney to RVP (see below) on the basis that if you spend the saving elsewhere it would be very difficult to get Kun back?

I was set to do Sterling>ADM this week but this is out the window now!

And if he's out longer, you can always wait for him to get a game or two, while saving a FT to do Yaya>Downing and Bony>Aguero or something similar.

    Saints-Utd Match report

Watched the game in the flesh last night. A very disjointed Utd performance, very lucky to come away with 3 points from 3 shots on target! Saints deserved something.

Rooney played up top through the whole match as a consequence of the 3-4-1-2 system. I presume this was to peg back the Saints full backs and this worked ok. McNair I thought was injured but appears to have been tactical as he was caught out a number of times before. We may well see a back four then vs Liverpool with Rooney dropping deeper. Young had a good game, and RVP could well be on the way back to his best.... His all-round play, touches, and obviously his finishing were top drawer.

Saints wise, Pelle should have scored another, if not two. Looked a bit of a cart horse in the Carroll mould in the flesh. Wanyama too, what a lump he is! Mane seemed very wasteful and frustrating, I wouldn't go near in FPL terms. All three goals were due to mistakes to be fair.

The away support was magnificent, everyone really up for it! Our little corner drowned out the whole ground!

I came home and transferred Kun>RVP on the basis a hot streak could be gathering momentum, and as it is more or less a straight swap rather than Rooney it leaves all the cash in one player ready to get Kun back later. I may well at the same time do Costa>Rooney. We'll see.

As the boss said overall an unsatisfying performance but a very satisfying 15 points from 5.

Loius Van Gaals red and white army!!!

    @Just a Hat

Be At One Bars are good to go for a fun night and good cocktails at a fair price (for London)

Trailer Happiness is an ace Tiki bar

London Cocktail Club (Covent Garden is the best one ) are mid-high priced dive bars (but very good)

Gordon's wine bar is my favorite, excellent wines and a massive cheese selection in London's oldest wine bar (I think)

A few selections there depending on the type of lady!

I've got Rooney so no for me. I think RVP will either get 2 or a double digit score. Rooney ticks along nicely. He even got an assist last night( in a game where ManU only had two attempts on goal) and would have got bonus if he hadn't been booked.

I think the Aguero money can be better spent by investing in a cheaper striker and beefing up the midfield.

Are you concerned about Rooney's performance against the Saints? or Uniteds offensive form in general? Its completely put me off buying Rooney.

Not at all. Rooney will always consistently score, goal here, assist there. He's been doing it for years. That ManU performance stat wise was unbelievable....they barely troubled the Saints defence - yet somehow came away with two points. Rooney is a dullard pick, but does the business.

I brought him in last night, basically because I enjoy his 2% ownership and ability to deliver double point hauls. It is a do or die transfer, goes well and I will push into the top 1k, goes poorly i could fall to 10k

      I've gone for it.

RVP was always going to be a short term differential this season. And we have a situation now, where I have £12.5m to spend, and I know when Aguero is back I'm going to get him back. I was happy with the balance of my team with Aguero, so have no real desire to completely rejig it. RVP is looking like he's coming into form, so could be the player to move me up the ranks.

The question should be is Falcao a genuine replacement for RVP and why the hypocritical lvg insists on not playing Falcao until he is fully match fit yet has played rvp while clearly unfit (rvp does appear to have played himself to some fitness now).

One good thing about going RVP now is that you can easily switch back to Aguero when time comes.

Just did Chadli+Aguero>Yaya+Lukaku....it feels good! it feels good to have two huge contributors from last season back - especially Yaya "Legend" Toure.

    Guzan (Gilks)
    JT-Baines-Bertie
    Haz(c)-Yaya (vc)-Siggy-Downing
    Costa-Bony-Lukaku

    Gilks; Hutton, Marney, Dummett

Baines Azpi Clyne (Chambers S. Taylor)

    Bony Costa (Austin)

4 players injured or on a red.

              Eggs and baskets.

You'd be expecting West Ham to regularly score 2+ goals per game for it to be worthwhile. Also you will get less opportunity to maximise your bonus point potential.

I was trying to be brief tbf

The argument of covering a teams points by having one of their attacking players is put fallacy. Look at city this year, nobody covered kuns points.

Look at teams like Chelsea where hazard fab and Costa have all scored great but William and Oscar don't cover their points. They don't cover the points of each other either. You are still leaving yourself open to those who double or triple up on the big three there.

If a team has a clear run of fixtures or clearly defined players who get the majority of their points regardless of fixture their is no problem doubling or tripling up.

What is the point of having Liverpool coverage even if they have good fixtures when their form is so poor when you could have a double up on a team in form with good fixtures?

Where are getting a little off track here. IMO coverage doesn't include useless players that don't get points.

Coverage is about the main players in each team that do get points. Such as Sakho, Downing, Bony and Siggy. They are the only ones in their respective teams that can be considered coverage.

So the question is, do you double up? or get one of each? I would argue that their is a higher points ceiling in getting one of each.

Does that mean I think it is a good idea to double up on west ham? Too difficult to decide imo. There are lots of pairs of players who might score better and lots who might score worse but whether they play for the same team or not should be irrelevant imo

Well when you take into consideration West Hams potential for goals over the upcoming game weeks it is relevant. If they have a high potential for regular 2+ goals per game then its probably worthwhile. If not then you really have to question whether its worth doubling up.

Well I agree with you to some degree but I don't know where this 2+ goals comes into it. If you have fer and sahko for example and qpr get 1 goal per game avg while Westham get 1.5 goal per game average you don't necessarily get more points from having a potential for 2.5 goals per game. Each player for Westhampnett has the potential for the 1.5 goals so you have the potential for more goals/points over a period of time especially if downing is more likely to get pints than fer.

Its all about stats. Average goals per game from a particular team and then average goal involvement of particular players in that team. It all gets very complicated and murky but from a statistics point of view there is some merit to the coverage argument.

My expectations for sakho and downing's ppg are independent of whether i own the other. If one thinks downing and sakho will have the highest ppg at their price range, they should both be in your team.

The maximising bp potential is the same as the 'shouldn't have opposing attackers and defenders' argument.

Which is a fair argument might I add 😉 Its all about maximising your 'points ceiling'

You are free to view them independently if you like, its much easier. The coverage theory takes a broader perspective which takes into consideration the total points potential for the team and the likelihood of two or 3 attacking players being involved in those points.

TBF, during a strong run of fixtures its often worth doubling up. However you have to strongly believe that West Ham will score enough goals for both Downing and Sakho to thrive.

Yea, which I don't think they will. I would much rather have Sakho and Siggy, because Siggy also has strong fixtures.

Yep, I don't mind doubling up on teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal when they hit form. Swansea and West Ham are a step too far though probably.

*disclaimer* I currently have Bony and Siggy however I'm very nervous as to their combined points potential. I'm just playing their strong fixtures and hoping for the best.

Which is a very valid point indeed. Any sane person would agree that to get to the very top in FPL, you need a good portion of luck. By putting more eggs in one basket, you increase your risk, meaning that your chance of getting a really high rank increases (as well as the risk of getting a low rank). The other option is to hedge your bets, and be more certain of an average rank (as long as the expected scores for each combination are the same).

Of course they do. But you shouldn't get toure to have city cover, for example. If there are midfielders you think will get more points, you should get them irrespective of whether you have 'covered' city.

Same with sakho and downing. If you think sakho will get the most points, get him. Whether you already have downing is completely and utterly irrelevant.

That's not what he's saying. It's the 'Get Bony if you don't have Siggy' statements. Whether or not you have the other has no effect on their points, so just pick the ones you think will score highest, not the one whose teammate you don't own

I don't think it is. I think the only time coverage should be used in in defence, where in the majority of cases the returns are even across the board.

So you are telling me you can call who will do better, downing or siggy?

I'm just saying its too hard to call, so would rather have 2 players from separate teams.

it isn't that hard to understand

doesn't mean that at all. Chelsea are the best team in the league, I have 3 chelsea players, and probably will have all season.

West Ham and Swansea are not the best teams in the league.

I just pick the players who score the most points. Bony has scored the most goals in the league in 2014 and Siggy has a high assist threat who is on most set pieces, doesn't matter that they both play for the same team, I pick them both.

What has Dzeko got to do with Yaya? Other than playing for the same team? You are getting Yaya for his penalties that Dzeko won't be getting anyway. You're telling me you would pick Yaya and be unhappy with Dzeko constant braces whilst hoping for a penalty from Yaya? At least you have City covered eh! Would you not just get both?

Which of these do I go for? Currently have Siggy and Downing and I don't have YYT. Don't really want to get rid of a midfielder that will play, when I have Fabianski, Hamer, Duff, Chambers and Austin that won't be playing this GW.

    A) Sakho
    B) Bony
    C) Dzeko
