This week’s ScoutCast is a throwback – a return to the days when Granville moaned about his team of red flags and names like Robin van Persie and Yaya Toure dominated our thinking.

Granville and I slip into such subject matter like it’s a pair of old slippers, whilst assessing the Aguero fall-out, the Dzeko option, Ivanovic versus “Dave” Azpi and how I’ve modelled my Fantasy Football management style on Roy Hodgson.

We roll out the regulars and lament the demise of the ScoutCast team – eliminated in the opening round of our own cup competition. Some things never change.

Swim in nostalgia via this link or roll back the years via the player below…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

yeah thats probably a great choice actually. Gives you the best GK as well as a playing backup at 4.0... thats my only issue with Hart tbh, not having a backup incase he goes awol

Thoughts on Kane AND Austin (with Costa) ?
Allows premium players in every other position except Siggy's, just feels like I'm playing the game wrong with all the money at the back but I just can't see any of the other options out scoring Kane and Austin

As a Kane owner I cannot wait to get rid. That said, if he gets something at Swansea that would be a good reason to keep for his following two plum fixtures.

Thats my forward line right now. Kane will get 3 gw's (swa BUR lei) to prove his worth, and after that its either benching him again, or selling.

Yes you do. You're not Triggerlips. You don't have any credibility under your belt (i.e past season experience), and you just ramble on about math which you think makes sense but in fact it's all gibberish.

              1) Look at the fixtures
              2) Predict who will score the most pts of the two
              3) Transfer them in

That's it. There's no magic formula like I need 0.25pts per 20 mins etc or whatever you wrote...

Are you two years old? all I'm saying is you claim to use "sound facts and information" but all I saw was someone trying to analyze FPL through some type of math equation, which it's not.

How is points-per-game-per-million some sort of complex math equation? Its very simple and basic calculations.

FYI, that was the first time I've ever posted calculations like that, and I probably won't do it again as I do agree that its kind of useless in the main, but it seems like you're criticizing me for actually having an analytical approach to "everything".

Personally I think some analytics is a welcome introduction to this forum, where 99% of the posts are AvsB questions, RMT's, or just general panic attacks about price changes.

Hey there. I'm just reading this thread and not to put words in anyone's mouths, but you might both be right. The points per million analysis is an interesting topic, so I applaud you for exploring, but at some point the nature of this game and the fact that we have to spend the money means that the spending becomes more inefficient the more expensive the players get, so no equation will be able to help figure out how to spend it all. Just a thought.

Thanks, great points. I agree with you, the value naturally gets smaller and smaller the more expensive you go, but you've got to put your money somewhere no matter how small the gains are. I enjoy playing around with stats and taking different views on things, even if some of my analysis is somewhat up in the air.

I'm not sure. I don't normally even consider them but they are a rough guide, and the projections look fairly decent as far as I can tell. The result was pretty conclusive too imo

Which all relies on RMT projections. Nice enough as a guide, but shouldn't be used as if it's some tool of mathematical precision. Attempting to gauge the value is also a fool's errand, you'll waste your life away on that stuff and to no avail. Pick the move you think will score more points in the next few weeks, then do the same again when you have more transfers to make.

yeah pretty much. Lucas is incredibly underrated imo - he does those dirty things like making fouls to stop counterattacks, winning the ball at the halfway line to start counters, and covering behind fullbacks when they get caught out of position. Those things have been the MAJORLY deficient in the last 18 months

Too many people falling into the trap of having a glammour player there that looks good passing the ball. Works well at Chelsea cos Matic is a beast and a lot of people dont realise Fabregas is a pretty decent tackler too. They need to be less Gerrard more Jedinak 😆

Change your keeper. As the two you have both look to be out for a while, you should recover the hit points in two gameweeks.

I have Clyne, Taylor and Guzan as my main DFs. Who else should I take? All of them below 5.0 (yeah, I am extreme budget on my defence). Yun is one. Who else?

I don't. Used it on Yaya, Bony and Ramsey (downgraded to Rooney).

@Get Out Micah (and anyone else on a WC):

Hart + Hamer looks like the best choice for sure. Hart has 5 great fixtures next, and when they get tough in gw21-23 Hamer has AVL STO (though you'd have to choose between mun/che in gw23).

Hart-Heaton is great too since Heaton has QPR CPL sun from gw21-23, but 10.5 for gk's might be a stretch.

        Just my 2 cents 😉

          Bad advice. My 2 cents.

2 Cheap GKs always prove the best value.

If on WC probably go with 2 of Panti, Foster, Alnwick or Hamer, until Jan. WC.

I would much rather have Zab + cheap GK than Hart and cheap defender..

Thats not true though. People who chose Hart from the start of the season would have scored much better than most 9m rotations, and with City's home fixtures getting much better they're likely to get even more CSs from now on too.

Luckily for me I can afford the extra 0.5 spend on Hart over Fab-Panti since Aguero is out, so why wouldn't i go for the one who'll score most?

My Aguero replacement currently looks like it'll be Dzeko or Benteke. The risk/reward potential for Dzeko has been pretty well discussed, but if anyone has some thoughts on Benteke and choosing between these two I'd appreciate hearing them. Cheers!

I went Dzeko. Overall Villa dont look like creating much chances and City will create loads especially with those fixtures.

I'm only getting Benteke for gw19 i think, either for costa or kane. Until then I think his fixtures are quite tricky:

wba - derby but usually low scoring
MUN - villa always lose that fixture... even moyes won 3-0 there
          swa - decent defense

SUN CPL lei are the ones I want him for.

        Good to go lads?

        Guzan
        Baines Taylor Wisdom
Hazard (c) Downing Sigurdsson Sánchez Boyd
        Costa Bony

Subs: Given / Yun, Dummett, Austin
        1 FT, 4.6 ITB

Not too happy starting Boyd, but the uncertainty over City's line-up makes me think waiting is the best option. Hopefully he dutifully chips in with another goal as he has when Costa's been out 😆

West Brom and Villa rotate home and away.

If you'd picked Guzan and Foster from the start, playing whoever was at home every week, it would have got you 37 points so far.

If you'd played the one with the away fixture each week, however, it would have got you 69 points so far.

It would be cool to see some data around whether there are home/away splits for different quality teams, like the top clubs are tighter at home, or the weaker ones park the bus away. I wonder if the data actually support these narratives or not.

I think it would very difficult to prove/disprove. On a club by club basis though, I think you could find data to support it. Would depend a lot on the manager - Mourinho dominating games against weaker sides at home, and keeping things tight away to big clubs for example, but then conceding more away to smaller teams. Alan Irvine's West Brom seem to be a side that go for it at home, but shut up shop away, for example, if you have a look at their results.

Good points, plus figuring out what constitutes a stringer or weaker team would be quite subjective at best unless you analyzed every gameweek based on the records of the teams at that time. I like the idea of focusing on managers as much as teams.

The stat I posted above ties in with this. I'm sure RMT would tell you to play Foster over Guzan, or Wisdom over Hutton, this week, and the bookies and most on here would probably agree. Football defies prediction like that a lot of the time.

He won't understand that. Use math formulas to clarify things.

            Say x represents the unknown.

            Swansea
            = 15(x)
            = 15(0.4)
            = 6 CS

            Sunderland
            = 15(x)
            = 15(.33..)
            = 5 CS

            Man City
            = 15(x)
            = 15(.33..)
            = 5 CS

Therefore we cannot predict the variable of x, as it is unknown in the game of FPL.

Playing Boyd would be the safe option...but for higher risk & potential reward, perhaps Ramsey or Silva/Nasri in?
Arsenal tend to plunder the goals at home to Newcastle in recent fixtures... could be worth a flutter. Man City have the upcoming fixtures to suggest opportunity for returns for their MIDs, and FWDs alike
