Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Greetings everyone - first post for me, my first year here.

Thoughts on my squad? I've had a great run but with Costa slowing down have moved into average weekly points. Considering bringing in Sterling this week but unsure who to swap him for. Would love some guidance.

    Adrian / Guzan
Zabeleta / Ivanovic / Baines / Hutton Yun
    Silva / Sanchez / Hazard / Downing / Boyd
    Costa / Kane / Austin

Was considering moving Ivan for Terry as he's in better form but Chelsea continue to have a brutal schedule. Adding Sterling for Boyd would leave me only 4.2m in bank for a defender and no cushion to bring back Aguerro once he's healthy. Who would you suggest for Ivan?

A draw more likely but Chelsea are 5-0-0 following a loss or draw. Still spurs away isn't easy only 4 days after your last match.

I still take Chelsea to score 1-2 and win.

His style is pretty similar but he doesn't have access to world class players - imagine if you'd put hazard and Fabregas in his palace side.

then again his transfers would probably be bad so he might need someone dealing with that

        1. Marknlard

Respect is pretty important for players. Really can't see the Chelsea squad respecting Pulis anywhere near as much as they do Mourinho. He'd lose the dressing room quickly after a couple of defeats, while Mourinho has enough in the bank to overcome that.

I'm not sure the Chelsea youth system is particularly admirable though, it's there to make money on players. None of them come through into the first team, they just want to make a profit.

The irony is that if he had put a solid youth system in place during his first tenure at Chelsea, a culture where the youngsters felt they had a chance to break in, then he'd be reaping the benefits now.

I mean he has the money to buy the other great players that other youth clubs have invested in that's what makes him so not liked, But he still gets the respect from the players and they give him 100% and fight for a playing spot gotta give it to him for that. I mean half of his bench are starters at any other club.

                    @JGJOKAJ

Yes, that's exactly it. Chelsea snap the players up when they're 15/16 and polish them a bit, loan them out all over the place and then sell as soon as they have a decent offer (Courtois being a rare exception to the last bit).

That might be an efficient way of making them money and if that's what's important then well done Chelsea.

Real fans have bad memories of him because he left after his one bad season. Ask them if they would've wanted him to leave after that title-winning season?

Sakho - LEI, sun, avl - great fixtures, fancy them to get minimum 2 clean sheets in those next 3, BPs magnet when they get a CS

Trippier - new, QPR, CPL - decent fixtures, could keep 1 or 2 CS's pretty good attacking threat

Jenkinson - WBA, swa, HUL - good fixtures, good attacking threat, 2 great fixtures for clean sheets, however in the past west ham have had some trouble keeping CS's

My plan of stacking my front 8 in preparation for Christmas rotation has backfired as no one was rested and points were left on the bench 🙁

That being said, who to bench this week?

    Downing, Siggy, Alexis, Haz, Silva

    Austin, Costa, Rooney

Leaning towards Costa as crazy as it may sound!

Glad ive decided not to go with 8 full attackers but still have the likes.of boyd points on the bench

Had Boyd and decided I would do this over the festive period and return to Boyd after that! What a bad idea! Lol

Annoyingly 0.1m short of Eriksen -> Sterling. Is it worth taking a hit via a Chambers downgrade (4.6m or below)?

    Hart
    Zaba, Terry, Hutton
    Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Eriksen, Downing
    Costa, Austin

    Elliot, Kane, Wisdom, Chambers
    Bank 0.1m, 1 freebie

        Not a Sterling fan?

Looks like LIV are finally finding their stride and it doesn't get much better than OOP at home to LEI

I'm doing this transfer & captaining Sterling against leaky Leicester. Only concern for me is he can be rested!

That's your Wild guess Mr.Trigger.Stats say otherwise. Nobody has hit shots on target better than him in last 4 gameweeks.
          He's 8, Hazard/Silva 4 & Sanchez only 3.

Silva should be higher imo, 2nd or 3rd.

But yes I'm probably going Hazard.

    Anything worth a FT?

    Maybe Bony -> Rooney?

    Adrian (Panti)
Azpil / Hutton / KToure (Clyne / Chambers)
    Hazard / Yaya / Sanchez / Downing / Silva
    Bony / Austin (Kane)

    Cheers

Cant see the logic in playing it early. Ive already have players i want who are performing well with good fixtures. Id wait for aguero to be back nd see any potential bargain arrives at january transfer window

It's a possibility. I will play with it and if I think my team can be greatly improved I'll go for it.

DGWs and January transfers can be addressed with steady transfers IMO, especially if you don't intend to rip your team apart for average DGW players and risky new signings

    Yaya, Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, siggy
    Sakho, Austin, Bony
